Breaking into one of the most secure prison planets in the system isn’t the hard part. The hard part is going to be getting back out again.
They just pulled off the heist of the century. Now ex-smuggler pilot Jez and the motley crew of the Ungovernable have a promise to keep: an extraction from a high-security political prison. But the timeline for the rescue is shorter than they ever imagined, and if they want to save their target from certain death, they’ll have to go in blind—no specs, no intel, no time to prepare, and only the skeleton of a plan. And between prison gangs, murderous guards, and a vicious warden, extracting their target might be the least of their worries—at this point, they might not even be able to keep themselves alive.
Jailbreak is the second book in R.M. Olson’s science fiction space opera series The Ungovernable. With a crazy, close-knit crew, plenty of humour, and loads of action, Firefly meets Ocean’s Eleven in this fast-paced, kick-ass, wickedly fun series.
R.M. Olson writes queer, feel-good space opera, featuring diverse casts, found families, and loads of action. R.M. has ridden the Trans Siberian railway, jumped off the highest bungee jump in the world, gone cage-diving with great white sharks, faced down a charging buffalo bull, and knows how to milk a goat. Currently they reside in Alberta, Canada with their four children, three cats, and a dog the size of a small bear. R.M. goes hiking and skiing more often than they probably have time for, eats more chocolate than is probably good for them, and reads more books than is probably prudent.
*** disclaimer: I am the narrator of the audiobook ***
It is beyond a pleasure to have the opportunity to narrate books one connects to on a personal level. I particularly connect with Jez. Olson absolutely nails the struggle and thought process of someone with ADHD. She doesn’t treat it as a failing, or something that needs to be “fixed”. There is no judgment. It is simply a part of who Jez is, an how she views and interacts with the world. Love!!
I adore the crew of The Ungovernable.
These books are very much in the “ensemble cast” category. There is not one character that takes full focus. The development of each character is tied into the development of their relationships to the rest of the crew.
This story focuses on Ysbel and her story. But that does not mean she takes the spotlight from the others. We learn more of her back story, and discover that she is sooo much more than a tough as nails weapons experts. The story of her and Tanya and their children is heartbreaking and poignant, and a beautiful balance to Olson’s cheeky, dry humor.
Our gang has a job to do, but time is short and planning is shorter. Guess they are going to have to wing it and hope for the best. Like that ever works.
This is book two of the series, but it works just fine as a standalone. All the essential bits are presented early on.
This is something of an action adventure SF space opera story. We have a large cast and a vast setting (space, you know, is like big), and yet the story does a good job of keeping it together and focused on the action. The story is well written and lots of fun to read with a fast paced plot sprinkled with just the right amount of humor to keep it real. Overall, an excellent read and I am looking forward to more from this author.
Highly recommended

This time the Ungovernable crew break into jail to rescue Ysbel’s wife and 2 children. It is one of the most secure prison planets in the system, so getting back out again is going to be a problem. It is not a pleasant experience, especially for Jez, who can’t seem to keep her mouth shut and gets punished for it often by an especially brutal guard. They finally come up with somewhat of a plan, but then it all goes sideways and it seems like all is lost. The finale is full of action, surprises, and ends with things turning out just the way I hoped they would, and with the crew closer than ever. I look forward to reading the rest of the series to see what this crew gets up to next.
A thrilling sequel! Olson springboards off of what she established in the first book to write yet another action packed book. Dare I say I liked this one better than the first? Eager to read the third one!
Second story is as good or better than the first. Awesome to find out that the mass murderer has a heart. Excellent growth on the crew. Starting to become a family!y. A very distinction am family, but a family. Looking for the next chapter already.
I really enjoyed this fast paced book. There is soo much going on in this book, a little bit too much its hard to keep track but not so impossible. I just didn't want to put this down.
They continue there journey of becoming a tightly knit team. Being tested by many challenges, the characters evolve and become even more interesting. I've already read the next book, also.
Ohh Jez had a devil of a time. The team heads back to prison to rescue Ysebel’s wife and children. Jez’s mouth just can’t stay still which means she pays for it over and over. That girl needs therapy, they alll do. There’s so many secrets within this team it’s a wonder they can come together cohesively to get away in one piece (ish) but in the end, they work together.
The second book of the series, this one has the crew in a prison planet, attempting to break out Ysbel’s family. Jez is growing more and more antsy with being in prison, picking fights, getting beat up, antagonising guards and roommates alike. Tae is growing increasingly more desperate since the prison tech is so old he can’t hack into it. Ysbel, Lev, and Masha are keeping their heads down, but that proves to be impossible as the prison politics draw them in. There’s very little hope, and time is running out, and they’re yet to find Tanya and Ysbel’s children even. Oh man! This book! My Jez! My Queen! I’m awed by the author’s imagination, the way in which she weaves a plot and depicts her characters. There’s no exposition, but everything feels visceral, the emotions are raw, and even the minor characters feel like real people. Just go read this book!
