I love it when travel books go off the beaten path! Moon has outdone themselves with their guide to the U.S. Civil Rights Trail!

At the beginning is a section called, “Planning Your Trip.” The places to visit include: Charleston, Atlanta, Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham, Jackson, MS, the Mississippi Delta, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Greensboro, Raleigh, & Durham, Richmond & Farmville, VA, and Washington, D.C.

As long as you’re travelling, you might as well check-out and support some “local” Black-Owned Businesses – This information may be found on pp. 20-21.

Next, is information about each place listed above. Information provided includes a brief history / details about the area, a list of the Top 3 things to see in each location, a map of the area, a Movement Timeline, People Who Made the Movement, Orientation, detailed information about how best to spend your time in each place, Sights to see, Tours and Local Guides, Shopping, Food, Nightlife, Accommodations, and Transportation. Accompanying the information about each place are lots of color and b&w photographs.

Towards the end of the book is a section called, “The Road Ahead” that tells readers how to “Get Involved” and “Get Educated.”

On page 498-499, there is information about “Coronavirus and the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.”

At the end of the book, there are notes for each “chapter,” an Index, a List of Maps pages, Photo Credits, Acknowledgments, and finally, a page of Map Symbols and Conversion Tables.

Outstanding!

I feel like this book perfectly combined my love of my two favorite things - history and travel! I am a hands on learner and I love to travel! Every summer, my boys + I hit the road to explore together. After all we’ve learned from this past year about racial relations in our country, I’m excited to give this guide a try. My eldest son lives in North Carolina, so I’m taking this with me when I visit.

This book offers a glimpse into the story of Black America’s fight for freedom and equality by taking you to the places where these events in history happened. From landmarks to celebrations, you can plan a trip that will help you experience a tangible piece of history!

The book begins with a large, full color map of the states included in the trail. It includes SC, Georgia, Alabama, Missisippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. In the forward, the author explains why she chose to write this book and all the things she added as she started writing. I love that she includes full color images, restaurants to eat at, and black owned shops.

The book provides multiple itineraries. You can choose to travel the entire trail, or just take short excursions on city at a time. With stops at multiple historic Civil Rights sites you can learn about Dr. King’s legacy at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, be transformed at the Emmett Till Intrepid Center, and stand tall with Little Rock Nine at their memorial in Arkansas.

The author, Deborah Douglas, is an award winning journalist. I enjoyed how she provides her perspective and knowledge throughout, including ways to engage with local communities by supporting Black-owned businesses and seeking out activist groups while in town. She even includes quotes an stories about each place that bring these trips to life and makes history come alive. The back of the map includes a fold out map with a timeline.

Journey through history, understand the struggles of the past, and get inspired to create a better future with this fantastic travel guide! Thank you to @moonguides @debofficially @tlcbooktours @tlcdiversity for the book to read + review!

Have you ever used a traveler’s guide when traveling?🗺

Now it’s a lot easier to do everything digitally, but I still love to buy a traveler’s guide and read up on all of the places I’ll be visiting. I especially love having a physical map!

In April, 2021, the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) held the Legends Tournament in Chattanooga TN. I traveled down there from Michigan to cover the tournament and my team, Detroit City FC. The way the tournament was scheduled, I had a number of off-days between the match days. With Chattanooga being somewhat centrally located to a majority of the cities on the trail, this guide provided great information for me to create an itinerary of soccer and civil rights history. I visited Atlanta, Montgomery, and Birmingham. During my driving time, I had rented three audio books from my public library - Stride Toward Freedom by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Freedom Riders by Ann Bausum, and Bending Toward Justice by Doug Jones. I became immersed in the history like I had never been before.

Detroit City FC will play teams in Maryland, North Carolina, and again visit Chattanooga in the future, and I plan on using this to guide me in visits to the other ten locations.

Another great book about the Civil Rights Movement. This one actually gives several itineraries depending on how much time the reader has in each location. In depth descriptions of the sites in each city, where to start, when to go, various 'special' occasions, list of black owned businesses.

A definite take along for anyone visiting any of the cities listed in the travel guide even of you're specifically touring Civil Rights places.

The author does a great job providing guidance from the traveler’s perspective on visiting the sites included in the book. It is a good balance of travel tips and historic background to help select and prepare for visits to specific locations. I wasn’t aware that this book had been published when I started looking for a travel guide. It is exactly what I was looking for and was very helpful.

I love a good travel guide, and this one mixes history with all the place you need to see on the Civil Rights Trail. I'm a sucker for an itinerary too, so anything that says "Oh you have two days here - these are your stops" is my go-to guide.

Love our history

Excellent travel guide, but a lot of the information was repeated several times. Great historical information and I did learn some new information. I will be using the guide to do a trip. The addition of restaurants and shopping opportunities was also great to see.
