Our Darkest Hour

His Secrets. My Lies. Our Demise.

My life had never been easy growing up. An abusive, alcoholic father. A mother who wouldn't leave him. It all felt empty and hollow. Until one day, a blue-grey eyed boy saved me from a bully and changed my entire world.

He and I grew from boys to adolescents. Best friends who fell in love. We shared a bond I thought could never be broken. But fate had other plans.

One event shattered our illusion.
It tore us apart even as we fought to stay together.
Then the boy I loved broke all his promises.
He left me.
He ruined me.
He lied.

Aaron Jackson Parrish should have been my fairy tale love story. But not all fairy tales have a happy ending. And ours had the most unforgiving ending of all.

I am tapping out, guys.

It was difficult to ignore the discrepancy between the age and the actions of the characters.
Seven years old kids don't talk, think or act like that. So many sentences that rubbed me wrong.
This is a pet peeve of mine.

“I’m messy and chaotic inside.” “Maybe I like messy and chaotic.”

No matter how hard he fought against it, we had a connection. It ran deep in our veins and it couldn’t be undone. I’d be his sword and shield, just like the warriors in the books he liked. I’d go to war for him. Fight by his side. And I’d do it because he was the only person I could see myself next to for the rest of my life.

But there was something good angst wise, and I was willing to overlook this out-of-character attitude, hoping for something more real later on.

However, the " ten years later came ", and my hopes went down the hill. I was so disappointed with Rhys reaction towards Aaron. . Still, I soldiered up and kept on until Valentine happened at 58%. Where did this twist come from? Why add this fabricated drama? And it rubbed me so wrong!
I think this is it—time to give up and stop hoping for something real to happen.
I believe that if the story had started with them in adolescence, instead of childhood, it would have had a better chance of working.

I like long stories that span over years but this one was just unnecessarily long. The book could have done without the inappropriately aged angst and some parts of the plot especially in part 1 and 2.

What an emotional journey for Aaron and Rhys. My heart bled for these two at the times when life was unfair. To find your soulmate at 7 seems unlikely but that’s exactly what Aaron finds in Rhys. Rhys is closed off and hides himself away from the world. His home life is heartbreaking and has no self worth. Aaron sees something in him and is relentless when it comes to making Rhys be his friend.

Jump to ten years later when Aaron is so totally in love with his best friend he doesn’t know how to cope. They have such a great friendship that he doesn’t want to risk it all. But Rhys has feelings too, just unsure what they mean or how to act on them. It becomes clear these two are destined for each other, but unfortunately not everyone feels the same. They are forced to deal with something awful and it seems unlikely they will survive the consequences..

What a beautiful story about a second chance romance. Aaron and Rhys were dealt a bad hand but their love truly conquered all. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t quick but they finally make it back to each other.

Wow what a story....

I have waited for this book for sometime now and my biggest regret is simply not reading it sooner. Aaron and Rhys’s journey takes you from two confused boys to two men who dig out of the pain that was forced on them as young teens.

This is a long book but one I couldn’t put down. Even knowing what was coming I couldn’t wait to find how the author would take me through the highs and lows of their story.

It’s an amazing read and I can’t wait for the next one in the series.

I really liked this book. However, I can't rate it above three stars. The story takes place over the lifespan of the characters starting at age 7. Seven year olds do not have an inner monolog anywhere close to what these characters do. It was like reading the thought process of a confused teenager. I rolled my eyes so many times through the first part of this book that I almost couldn't finish it.

Once we moved into Part II where the boys were actual teenagers the story became much better. Characters from two different classes, one rich, one extremely poor. Both suffering in different ways. They become each others rocks. A can't breath without you kind of love.

Dramatic events tear them apart and they are reunited by chance as adults. I really enjoyed the story. If they were written as actual children in Part I, versus children who think and internally talk like an adult, this would easily have been a five star read.

Wow, this is a long book. I almost tapped out several times but I did finish it, and good job you if you did too. There is so much dialogue, like so much. And it just felt kind of disjointed. And can we talk about Part 1? My teenager can barely hold a conversation with me before noon, these are some Mensa level 7 year olds.

’It was built to burn, wreck and ruin. It came into our lives like a storm, bringing havoc in its wake.’

This book was such a good read, I found it hard to put down! Our Darkest Hour is the first book I’ve read by Sarah Bailey and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the books to come in this series.

The story is split into four parts, and I really feel that these helped split up the narrative. The story follows Rhys and Aaron from the age of seven right up to 24 and is such a moving, heartfelt story. I really resonated with these two and the struggles in which they went through.

The chemistry between them is evident from the get go, and I loved reading about their friendship blossoming into love.

This book is MM and a dark-ish second chance romance. It packs a punch and has both steam and the cute factor.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Our Darkest Hour was an epic beyond epic tale of friendship, love and heartbreak.

This was a whopper of a book to read but I enjoyed every page of it. I liked seeing Rhys and Aaron in various stages of their lives. Most times we don't know what the MCs were like when they were children or even teenagers. So I truly loved watching these two grow up. Their story was painfully real. Boy did I need the HEA at the end!

Prepare to get sucked in and have your tissues ready! You'll go through a lot with these two but the author did an amazing job telling Rhys and Aaron's story!

Trials and tribulations

Rhys is a withdrawn seven year old when he meets Aaron at school. From there, their fate is sealed. An MM romance, love doesn't run smoothly as life throws obstacles at them both. I admit that having read later stories in this series, I was expecting a stronger link with the Syndicate books. There is an almost insignificant one, but no matter, because despite the rather emotionally precocious seven year olds, this is a terrific tale of love, lust and loss.

OUTSTANDING READ!!! 10/10 I WISH I COULD GIVE IT MORE STARS
Aaron Jackson Parrish knew when he saw Rhys King being picked on when they were 7 years old he would protect him. Even tho Rhys didnt want to be friends With Aaron. Aaron was not giving up. Even sitting beside him in class and when he found out he was walking home got his sister to take him home. Then told him to be there in the morning and his au pair and himself who be there to take him to school.
What Rhys didnt want Aaron to know was his home life was a nightmare, his mum suffered when she gave birth to Rhys making her have a stroke, His father was and alcoholic and abusive man who hated Rhys because having him had taken his wife away from him. It didnt stop him from beating his wife up and the sadist thing was she would never leave him.
These two become the best of friends but what Rhys didnt know was his best friend was so deeply in love with him and on chance day he kissed him confusing Rhys. But it also explained a lot. Because Rhys never felt anything for any one except his best friend.
Can they be more than best friends? Would they always be there for one another?
This was a totally different kinda story and I have never read this storyline before. I was fascinated by their story. There was so much love but so much heart ache. It had me in tears at times i went through so emotions and i couldnt put it down. Another fantastic read !!!!

Aaron and Rhys met when they were 7 years old at school when Aaron chased away a bully who was harassing Rhys. Rhys was a loner, he kept to himself, and was unhappy with his home life. Aaron was very determined to become the best of friends. Aaron saw the sadness inside Rhys and wanted to be there for him and Aaron slowly broke down his walls. Aaron and Rhys became inseparable with a friendship and bond that was so strong they promised to be there for each other forever.
When they were 17 years old Aaron had always known he was gay and in love with Rhys. After spending an incredible day and getting caught in a rain storm together Aaron kisses Rhys. Rhys gets confused because he liked the kiss. Rhys takes the time to figure out he is just as in love with his best friend too. Everything is perfect between them both until a terrible accident happens with the same bully from their past and he tries to hurt Aaron very badly. Honestly, this book broke my heart so many times, in so many ways. The drama, angst, and devastation that takes place in the lives of Rhys and Aaron are so real, so relatable there was no way I could read this story without physically having a reaction. Sarah Bailey has evidently been hiding part of her talents because, in my opinion, "Our Darkest Hour" is the best of everything I've read from her to date. Bits and pieces of the book continually slip through my mind and I'm sure this story will forever change me in ways I haven't realized. These two young men worked hard and went through hell but eventually, the HEA I needed for all of us. Thank you so much, Sarah. If this were a movie, you'd definitely receive an Oscar. As it is, I can only give you five stars.

This is book one in the Our Darkest series. I absolutely love reading this author and a new series is always so damn exciting. This book, Aaron and Rhys's story is a work of art. It contains everything from heart break, amazing friendship and young love to absolutely nothing. I was glued to each and every word as I drove into this story and hated to set it down. This is a must read! I cannot wait to learn more about Rhys's friend Mer in the next book in the series. Enjoy!

This is a love story between two people because love is love no matter who you are. I cried and laughed was shocked and upset. Rhys had a terrible time of life growing up. Father who had no love and a mother who loved Rhys dearly. Aaron was Rhys best friend and only friend and that was the bond that started the bond between the two. This book was well written and packed a great deal of emotion into the pages. The story flowed and was told in a perfect pace, the story was not rushed it was believable. This was truly a great story written in a wonderful way. It was more than a boy meets boy story so much more.

This book is about a very long term relationship starting when the two main characters are seven years old. I was riveted to this book and lost sleep as I couldn’t put it down. The only criticism that I could possibly make is that the author gives the two seven year olds maybe a bit too much adult insight into their feelings. Other than that I can’t think of anything wrong with this book. It’s terrific.

Dark and Gritty!
I have really enjoyed reading this book, the author did such a great job developing the characters, that I feel like I really know them, and not just the major characters, but the minor ones too.

Also, it caused me to lose quite a bit of sleep while I was reading it, because it was so hard to put down at night.

It’s an emotional rollercoaster, with angst, drama, passion and depth. It’s a definite must read and one everyone should pick up.

Our Darkest Hour by Sarah Bailey begins from one of the most unusual of places for a dark romance, a Primary School. One of the main characters, young Rhys is a bit of a loner. Living in low income housing, not making any friends, being raised by a horrible father and tragically disabled mother…life is pretty much shit (and it’s barely even started) for this seven year old. Right as the school bully is about to make life even worse, Rhys is suddenly bailed out and saved by a boy from a different place in life. Aaron is chatty, sociable, and hails from an infinitely wealthy family. Those differences might matter to Rhys, but Aaron couldn’t get Rhys out of his mind even if he wanted to. What proceeds is a love story told across 20 years that’s one of the most unique approaches to a dark romance I’ve ever read.

Dark romance is a bit of a vague idea, but if you’re familiar with this particular author, it’s usually about some very heavy scenarios. To be true, Rhys’ home life as a child is tear jerkingly horrible, and Aaron’s story yields some sympathy as well, but what helps sell this romance is it’s relatability. There’s an artistic quality that shines in a new light in this story’s context. Seeing love budding without some sort of intense sexually based (or at least perceived) criminal element displays an innocent beauty to watching these two growing together. There’s love, there’s lust, there’s joy, there’s pain, but we can all imagine it happening to ourselves no matter what kind of love we’re about.

While the framework of the story would have worked with any variant of lover(s), the MM flavor was brilliantly executed. Naturally as the pair matures there’s eventually the want and need for more physical affection. The sex scenes were very enjoyable, and appropriately intense for a couple of young men exploring the very best of themselves. Tragedy of course will strike this couple eventually and the particulars of the response to this moment is one of the most heart breaking experiences I’ve read in this genre. It’s still romance, so we get our HEA, but the rebuilding of their relationship is both equal parts satisfying and rewarding.

Verdict: Our Darkest Hour by Sarah Bailey breathes new life into the MM dark romance stable. Starting with a surprisingly detailed origin at seven years of age, Rhys and Aaron grow as people and as lovers through their teen years and into adulthood with an amazing interpretation of mirror image romance. This is love birthed from friendship, an emotion derived before you even understand its meaning, is beautiful and relatable when described in this way. Avoiding the cliche of over-the-top masculine lust while still packing the heat, the romantic elements will satisfy exclusive MM readers as well as those newer to the sub-genre. While the novel avoids cliches, I have to supply you some of my own. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll kiss your previous perceptions of male dark romance goodbye. It’s quite the journey, but to the reader, I say bon voyage!

Special thanks to Sarah Bailey for providing an advance review copy of Our Darkest Hour to TehBen.com All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Our Darkest Hour is the first book of a brand new series by Sarah Bailey.
It tells the story of two best friends who battle through trials and tribulations from childhood to adulthood. And fall in love all the while. It’s a Sarah Bailey creation and for anyone who has picked up her books will know that this is a powerful, emotional rollercoaster of a story. But more than that, it’s an epic love story. One that will break your heart and mend it continuously.

Aaron and Rhys’ friendship is so pure and magical. We leapt through time with them. We experience the hardship of being bullied, misunderstood, unloved, helpless, and numb all through Rhys’ eyes. And in Aaron’s eyes we experience hope, strength, confusion, angst, desire and true unconditional love. We patiently wait for the friendship to take wing, to see the exchange of trust and loyalty. We wait for them to realise they belong.
Then hits the angst. And I’ll be honest, the angst was insane. I loved it. There were multiple palpitations, not just because of the heart racing, lip biting scenes, but true fear of potentially seeing this beautiful relationship fall apart.

Our Darkest Hour is a slow burn. And I’m not hating. I love slow burns, so for me this was right up my street. This book was beautifully written from the perspective of two characters who can only be described as being soul mates. In fact, there were so many tropes in this book which made it a huge indulgent read. Coming of age, soul mates, second chance, friends to lovers, dark romance. And this book is different from Sarah’s other dark romances in that it wasn’t as dark. But that’s not a negative critique in any way shape or form. I’m just here recovering from the abuse my heart has taken after reading this story.

The author guarantees HEA so I’m not spoiling anything by saying there’s a happy ending. But it’s the JOURNEY and the hardcore FEELS in this book which makes this cake an absolutely unforgettable delight. It's what a romance book is all about. It's what a romance book should be.
I adore Aaron and Rhys. They have a special place in my heart. Their love is pure, hot, intense and inspiring. Readers will understand.
I only wish I could give this ten stars because that’s what it is.
And now that I know there’s more Our Darkest books coming out, I can’t wait to see who Sarah throws into the fire next…though I think I already have a clue.

Who finds their soulmate at eleven years old. The one, their everthing, their forever? Cole Carter saw Meredith Pope across the way the first day of grade school not knowing her or anything about her and instantly fell in love. She was best friends with his brother Ralphie, so he found everything could about her and watched her from afar for five years since he was not old enough to be with her.
He would dream of the things that he would like to do to her. His dreams were a little dark and depraved for someone so young. When he turned sixteen he approached her with his Intentions, but she told him that she was too old for him since she was eighteen years old. However, Cole was not going to let that stop him. He was very confident, a pretty boy as well as a bad boy and all the girls wanted him but he only had eyes for Meredith. She decided to him a shot but he had to keep their relationship a secret.
Meredith Pope was a beautiful strawberry blonde red head with insecurities issues because she was bullied about her looks, virginity, never been kissed, being too outspoken you name it. So when Cole took an interest in her she was skeptical and was wondering what he wanted. She thought he wanted her to be another one notch in his bedpost not knowing at the time that he was also a virgin too. Cole break down all the walls that she had built up around her heart. He helped her to see herself the way he sees her.
Their romance was filled with passion, and lust. However, it did not come without its obstacles, trials, and tribulations. These trials range from a broken promise from them forbidden to date which subsequently led to a break up. Although they deeply loved each other the odds were stacked against them with one problem after the next
They were it for each the first in everything and vow to be the last and forever for each. The romance was riddled with numerous heart break, separation , murder, revenge, jealousy and a love that withstand it all leading to sweet HEA.

First I have to say that this is the first time I've read a MM romance and honestly I didn't see that it was a MM at first but I thought it looked like a good book.
I did fall for the storyline about Rhys and I often pick out books that can be a bit darker even if I do love a romance novel too. But I do feel something for those that have a bit of a struggle and needs to work a bit harder to find their place in life.

At first it was sad to read about this young boy that was so alone and didn't want anyone to notice him. To learn more about his story and understand why he wanted to be left alone. I do think that Sarah Bailey has a well written story about the friendship between Rhys and Aaron. Everyone deserves to have a friend like Aaron and to have someone to fight for you when all you want to do is be left alone and not have a care in the world. To see their friendship grow into something amazing and at the same time sad when things get rough and how parents don't always see what is best for their children. Or when they try to make a decision that they think is right.

This book has a lot of emotions and I've cried, laugh and even got upset at point but I fell hard and I love both Rhys and Aaron. I do love their story.

I think that Sarah has a way of making you get lost in the world of books and she brings out stories that you just love to read and the books leave you with a story that you didn't think could bring you so many emotions and still feel so alive and good to read.

I am looking forward to read the next book in Our darkest series.

This book consumed me. It’s such a good story line and I loved the characters, however there were definitely flaws.

I’ve previously mentioned my issues with both MC’s being 7 years old in part 1. It’s just not realistic at alllll. 7 year olds don’t act/think/speak this way. They should have been older in this section, or did the intros when they were 7 and then carry on when they were older. I struggled at times to keep reading (and to stop rolling my eyes) due to feeling weird about their age.

When they’re then 17 the story is so much better and enjoyable. The plot twist was a massive surprise and I was panicking along with the MC’s so thought that was great.
However, Aaron just didn’t realistically fight for Rhys enough. That wasn’t his character. Why didn’t he go after him when he was 18? 19? 20?

So now they’re 24, the whole book up until this point is quite lengthy and then this final part is just so rushed. They meet, they fuck, they’re boyfriends again. So. Damn. Quickly. Sighhhhhhh.

I still loved this book but eugh there’s so many frustrating parts. I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars but purely because I haven’t felt this way about a story in a long time, I’m going with 4.

Aaron may be young but he knows something is special about Rhys. He knows he would do anything to see this boy smile let alone talk to him. Aaron has changed Rhys life more than he thought anyone could. At such a young age, Aaron saw right through Rhys and knew this boy needed love. Will their families accept them or will they stay together no matter what?

The beginning line was heartbreaking. The whole time they were seven I was rooting for Rhys to open up faster. It's beautiful when someone wants to help you when you truly need it. When they were teenagers and their first kiss happened I felt terrible for Rhys but I knew he loves Aaron even if he didn't know it yet. The card Rhys wrote for Aaron was everything. Their adult lives were harder for them and I felt awful. Trying to find yourself after something traumatic is a delicate process. Emily seems wonderful. Patrick is an awful father. Meredith is definitely different. Steph is a sweet mom. This ending was everything I needed and more.

This sat on my kindle from release, having attempted to read it twice. I truly wanted to love it.

“A boy who’s crying out for someone to see him. Not the wall he puts up, but the real Rhys inside. The one who cares about his mum more than himself. The one who’s hurting more and more with each passing day. I see you, Rhys, and I still want to be your friend.”

The above, from a seven year old child???

The premise is amazing, the execution and lack of research into the age bracket Aaron and Rhys portrayed, was unrealistic.

Rhys’ character’s depression, at such a young age, the thoughts of death, lack of communication, it all lacks substance in a contemporary situation.

Health care in the UK, his mother’s ill health, none of it worked, it was all too far fetched, sorry.

Repetition, blue-grey eyes, 🤦‍♀️ In need of editing.

Neither Rhys nor Aaron had it easy growing up but at least they had each other. As they grew older, they became more to each other and fell in love. Their world is torn apart and they go their separate ways. Will they be able to repair the damage and find love with each other again? Fast-paced read with lots of drama, steam and emotion. Great characters with lots of depth and wonderful chemistry in the MM romance. I really liked it.

I’ve liked every single one of Sarah’s books and this one is no different. I think my only issue is because the book was set in the before for so long my mind made me think of these MCs as children still so when they were 17yrs old and were getting sexual, I was feeling off. There was nothing wrong with the MM content but rather I had a feeling I was reading about very young children. Loved how the second chance happened.
