Unprecedented times lead to a lot of changes. There are some things, however, that should stay the same. The assembly of the saints on the Lord's Day is one of those precedents. During the coronavirus crisis of 2020, thousands of churches stopped assembling together. The biblical duty of gathering together was temporarily put on hold; the essential nature of the gathering of the saints was called into question.
In Essential Service: Coronavirus and the Assembly of the Saints, Chris Hume seeks to show that the gathering of the church is indeed an essential service, vital for the life of believers. Hume lays a biblical foundation for continuing to meet, showing how doing so is not only our duty, but is also for our good and in accord with the Christians who have gone before us. The book makes application to the coronavirus crisis of 2020 and also looks beyond that pandemic.
Chris Hume was born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania. He graduated from Saucon Valley High School in 2005 and was converted to Christianity two years later. He holds graduate degrees in Literature and Business. He enjoys (raw) milk, honey, eggs, fat, and extra salt (Exodus 3:17; Luke 11:12; Psalm 65:11; Luke 14:34). He is happily married with five children. One of his favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 14:4: "Where no oxen are, the crib is clean, but much increase is by the strength of the ox." 4.5 stars (I rounded up :))! Excellent, biblical, irenic. Some inconsequential things I disagreed with, but overall— AMEN!! Highly recommend! Short and to the point- buy this book!
I’m not sure what I think of this book. I just couldn’t give it four stars as much as I wanted to. Apparently I’m in the minority. Good thinking, but already outdated in some of his statements.
I’m personally against masks from a science point of view, but I feel that if we can still meet without making such a big deal out of the restrictions we should at least not be so judgmental about those who have different views, but continue to minister.
