BOOK 1: THEIR LAST WORDS A young woman is found dead on the streets of London. Her throat slashed, her body mutilated, and one word carved into her flesh: “DON’T.” Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is assigned to the case. Young, handsome, and from a wealthy background, he’s tipped for the top. He joins a team based out of Bermondsey, South London. It’s meant to be a steppingstone to his next promotion, but this case will threaten to bring down his career and everything he thought he knew about policing.
BOOK 2: DEADLY CRIMES An elderly African man is found dead in the street, shot through the head. The killing has the hallmarks of a professional assassin. Dumped in a waste bin next to the dead man is the dismembered torso of a child. On his first day back at work, disgraced Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson finds himself teamed up again with newly promoted Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks.
BOOK 3: THE BURNING MEN A man is burnt at the stake in a London park. His smouldering corpse is a message of the most violent kind. The victim is Davey Caine. He is the heir to the criminal empire created by his father, William ‘Billy’ Caine. Billy is a notorious and violent gangster who controls South East London. But he’s not the man he used to be and the sharks smell blood in the water.
BOOK 4: YOU CAN’T HIDE Albert Tanner, vicious psychopath and burner of men, is in the USA with unfinished business. Only Detectives Ray Paterson and Johnny Clocks can stop him. Their task is straightforward: hunt Tanner down and bring him home. But a few explosions, an assassin and a dead child change everything.
BOOK 5: THEIR DYING BREATH A severed head washes up on the banks of the Thames, a star carved into the forehead. The next day the airwaves are hacked. A live-stream shows a man imprisoned in a box. He also has a star cut into his head. Then the man is drowned. Two more men are murdered on live TV, two more will die within hours. Detectives Paterson and Clocks race against time to ensure their next breath isn’t their last. But this enemy is far more deadly than any they’ve encountered before.
I read each of these books separately when they first came out. When I read the first book, Steve Parker was an unknown author to me. I am so glad I got in on the ground floor with his series of crime thrillers.
I found them all to be well-written with skillfully drawn characters. Plots were solid, and held my interest from the very first page to the last unexpected ending,
With all 5 books in one fantastic value box set it would have been too much to post an individual review of each book so this is a whole series review.
Rarely is an author brave enough to 'tell it as it is' so it is very refreshing to read a story written by a retired policeman in the language I would expect from a London Police Department and I also love the way the full cockney experience has been brought to the reader in the shape of Clocks. You can love him or hate him he doesn't care. A gripping series with unique stories and a duo of detectives that don't always work by the rules but do always get results makes for adrenaline pumping reading with enough humour interlaced through to offset the darkness.
Now normally I would be recommending you start at book 1 and settle down for the full Paterson and Clocks experience and read how two detectives who started out hating each other and are totally different in every way manage to make such an entertaining and effective team but here I don't need to because you have all the books in 1 brilliant box set.
An excellent police procedural with a couple of likely detectives in the style of the old tv series the Sweeney. Enjoyable read, some twists to keep you guessing.
What can I say about this series? First, you need a strong stomach for fire and violence and a tolerance for the ' F ' word being used in nearly every sentence. You also need to ditch an image of the police as law abiding, politically correct, well balanced good guys. In the first book we start off with appallingly graphic murders of women. We also meet Paterson a filthy rich high flying officer destined for the highest rank. He does not know much about actual policing but has enough intelligence to take the advice of an experienced officer. He is also the target for contempt by a foul mouthed non politically correct cop called Clocks. Said Clocks has the nickname of Timex. The murders take a sudden twist although the murderer becomes obvious early on. Clocks and Patterson end up buddies to the extent one covers the unlawful killing of the murderer by Patterson. Big scandal, major tragedy in Patterson's life. He loses the love of his life although this is hard to believe since he comes over as a selfish narcissistic type. Unbelievably he is reinstated although the high flying career path is over. On to second story, Paterson and Clocks bosom buddies, Paterson now thinking like a detective. New plot, mixed African superstitious practices, the sacrifice of children, a phony religious cult, very nasty murderers who get their comeuppance by a vigilante marksman who is allowed to escape by Patterson. Next case. Sickening death by fire and two equally crazy master criminals. At end one escapes. Hmm. Next we are in New York following escapes criminal to the Big Apple. More mayhem on the streets of Manhattan. Bullets flying. Secondary plot line child abuse and fiery deaths. Criminal sorted back to, pardon me, the Smoke. New plot involves the murders of Muslims with a sub plot of more dead girls, a bit like the first story. Detective in charge thinks Paterson did them on very slim conclusions. And so we are ready for the cops next outing. Granted these books are well written, but the two cops are horribly unpleasant bullies who roll over others like juggernauts. We are supposed to find them crude but lovable who get the job done. I can see these as action films. With right actors they could work. In print they are thrilling but leave a very bad taste in the mouth and mind.
This boxset of thrillers was excellent value for money and a brilliant read. Each book was interesting and really kept you hooked, and I'd definitely recommend them. My only bugbear is the unrealistic level of use of violence by the police in the stories and how they just get away with it, even when it's on tape - it's not the sixties anymore! But otherwise, an excellent read and very enjoyable. I'm intrigued what will happen next though. Book 1: Their Last Words A great introduction to the characters of Paterson and Clocks, and proof that we never really know someone. Book 2: Deadly Crimes Shockingly with its roots in real life, this story was stomach-churningly disgusting. Proving that the author knows how to take those real tales and weave them into an excellent fictional one, this is a brilliant read. Book 3: The Burning Man This book was my least favourite of the five in the boxset. With old gangland revivals, violence and horror, it was a truly disgusting book. Book 4: You Can't Hide Paterson and Clocks head to America on the trail of Tanner, but they get so much more than they expected. An excellent story but full of so much violence and action that it was truly shocking at times Book 5: Their Dying Breath This final book in the boxset was very tense and had me most on tenterhooks as you just didn't know for a long while what was happening and why. It was an excellent finale to the boxset, but left us with a cliffhanger that was very mean!!
A completely different way of telling stories about cops. These would have been difficult for non British folks to understand with all the colloquium talk. However, I could fully relate to both characters and how they ended up being partners and friends. The stories are fast paced, and I hope, far fetched. Not sure either policeman would survive in the PC world of lawmen nowadays. It definitely helps that the commissioner (top cop) is their go to guy. The stories wouldn't work without that. As he has retired I am not sure there can be any more, although they did sort of manage with the last book. To cut it short, the storytelling is brilliant. Usually the setting for a PI. Making it about 2 policemen from completely different walks of life adds spice and a lot of it. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
I’ve just read the whole set in a couple of days and loved them all. I flicked through some of the reviews and boy are people picky! Yes some of the storylines are far fetched and the characters a bit stereotypical but this has come out of some guys imagination for our entertainment. It certainly entertained me and had me laughing away to myself quite often. Wish I had written down some of the funny remarks to use myself. Would translate into tv/film a treat. If people want absolutely true to life realistic tales they should maybe read non fiction. Just sayin! :) Only downside was that I’ve finished them - when’s the next one coming?
Just an incredible box set giving us two detectives who are like chalk and cheese. Reminds me of The Persuaders with Paterson being the one from a monied background whilst Clocks is from the East End of London. They make a great pairing with their irreverence to authority, humour and they always get their man. Five superb stories which introduce us to them and the way their trust in each other slowly grows. I am not going to give a short precis of each story but will say that you will not regret reading this brilliant set. Desperately need more stories involving these two!! Has to be the best box set I have read this year to date.
Two polar opposites, both flawed in their own way, make a brilliant team who fight fire with fire and to hell with rules and political correctness. Reminiscent of The Sweeney. Each book would make a stand alone thriller, but I am glad I had this box set and read them in order, as there is a lot of continuity throughout. I usually find with a box set, especially of five books, it is best to read something else in between - which is why it took me 2 1/2 months to read this set. Loved the surprise ending of book five, which certainly leads me to believe there is a book six on the way. Can't wait.
What a treat I loved this pack Paterson and Clocks the full works. Five books that follow these two working together. Amazing books all of them. For reader's as soon as one's finished you will be eagerly wanting to start the next. Such full of humour and classic murders. This author knows how to hit your spots to keep you guessing throughout. Gripping crime reads I will highly recommend to reader's.
i love british crime novels. i only got thru a few chapters of the first book of the five book set. the characters are so unlikable. none of them seem to have any redeeming qualities. and i couldn't understand most of the british slang. there's a glossary in the end of the books. but i was going crazy looking up a word, and then trying to find where I'd left off. i read on a Kindle. I'm very disappointed.
Steve Parker's portrayal of these two detectives is amazing. Loved every one of the six books in this series and hope there will be more to follow. Gritty crime thrillers with lots of laugh out loud fun as these two detectives form a close bond after a dodgy start in their relationship. Highly recommend and wish they could be made into a film. It would be one I'd watch over and over.
A Violent And Turbulent Tale Of The Leading Edge Of UK Policing.
A shock and awe collection relating to British policing by men who don't pull their punches when it comes to law enforcement and getting the desired result.
There's grim humour as well as dedication to the job in hand, and a relentless effort to get results whilst not respecting cumbersome legal necessities. It will take your breath away, whilst the grim humour will also raise a smile.
I absolutely loved this series. The two coppers reminds me of myself and my best friend. The insults, the jibes, the comments we make to each other is exactly like Ray and John! I loved the way the author starts to introduce the next book while still reading the one you are in. Each storyline is completely different from the one before, all believable, but truly unique. I've just bought books 6-8 and am looking eagerly to start and finish them!
WOW. WOW Love this series. Highly recommend. In the first book Patterson and Clocks get off on the wrong foot. Then they team up in the second and things just keep get better and better. I had a hard time putting the book down. Keep you on the end of your chair. The action never stops and full of twist and turns.
These books are a study in how a thriller series should be written, I was completely sucked in to these two cops lives. The whole series is a roller coaster ride, and although they are relatable characters I hope normal cops wouldn't get away half the bad things Paterson and Clocks get away with.
Absolutely fantastic set of books. The characters are so believable especially PATERSON who is mega rich and has designed clothes and then you have CLOCKS who's not bothered what he wears and a mouth like a sewer but they fit together and always have each other's back. What an ending.WOW
I gave this set a 5, because it was a great read, full of twists and turns, keeping your interest right throughout the set. Look forward to reading more from Steve Parker! Also, hopefully, there is one with the ending to this one. Thank you.
Steve Parker, is new to my library selves . Able to captivated his reader with two intriguing characters. Addicting in so many way and what a cliffhanger ending in the fifth novel. Worthy read and I only give out five rating . . . when the author storytelling catapult me into continuing the storyline.
I have finished the 5 novels in this series and each one was an amazing read. A backstory running through them linked the central characters but each book had its own unique, clever, gritty, intricate plot. Enjoyed every one and have downloaded book 6 to continue the story. Recommended.
Have read all 5 books in this box set and can only describe them all as absolutely captivating from start to finish. A great story line through all 5 books and I guess very actual account of real life in the Police and country crime. Highly recommend and enjoyed many a good laugh with Clocks comment and banter.
These 5 Books are great reading on there own, but when you read all 5 and see how skilfully the Author has brought them together. It makes them that little bit more engaging!
A great read, with some great senarios. I'm going to miss Paterson & Clocks!
Great read, so intense, fantastic conclusion, more please!
Thought at first a trifle raw and harsh, but as the stories unfolded they became such compelling stories, very difficult to put down. Can’t wait to read more of Patterson and Clocks
Learned and cared about the two main characters. Wanted to read #6 right away even though it doesn't exist yet The last. two paragraphs have left me wondering.
Grew to care about these two characters. The last page has left me pondering Can't wait to read Book six.
Excellent plots in these books. Charaters to love and some to hate. Colorful language but fits the character very well. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
Excellent down to earth coppers chasing vicious killers
Thrilling edge of seat crimes covering some of the worst killers and graphic deadly scenes but a sense of humour sometimes black by the coppers makes this book extremely good.
I enjoyed this series. The characters are easy to bond with and follow. Steve Parker has the gift to tell a story and the reader to follow, want more, understand, stay up all night, anxiously awaiting the next book. Suitable for teens.
British language, slang, and regionalism come to life in a well developed murder myster. No boiler plate plots in his series. Small cliff hangers at the story's ending encourage moving to the next in the series.
