Ashes and Blood

Rate this book
You can travel the same path countless times, but it can sometimes lead to another realm.

A mystical tree captures the attention of Megan and her friends, morphing the surrounding environment, transferring them to an exotic planet with bloodthirsty creatures. Saved from the deadly beasts by hunters, Megan finds herself stuck in a rural town still maimed by the plague. A chance encounter with a familiar face gives Megan and her friends some security during their adjustment to this new world.

While settling into promising lives, they are stalked and attacked by planet Dalya's humanoid inhabitants, who focus solely on Megan. One dark night, after a magical attack, the Fae King's knight is sent to fetch Megan for a reason she can't possibly guess. When she wakes up a prisoner, she learns that there is much more to this strange place, and it's oddly more like home than she ever would have expected.

The more Megan learns about the strange world of Dalya, the more she realizes, finding a way home is insignificant compared to everything else at stake.

I was first drawn to Ashes and Blood by Katie Zaber when I saw the cover. I love trees, whether real or fantasy.

What would you do if you are ambling along a familiar trail, and all of a sudden, you find a tree that was never there before? I think I would run, but before they can decide to do the same, things begin to change with every step they take and they are whisked away, into another world.

Sarah, Dana, Ciara and Megan are in for the time of their lives and I am along for the ride. Katie Zaber did a fantastic job creating a world filled with wonder and magic. I quickly became immersed in her world, created in vivid detail with characters I immediately became involved with.

Of course, we have to have one who is in the spotlight and that will be Megan, though all peripheral characters have very important parts to play to make this book a whole. Each has their own personalities and talents that will come in handy. They are tight and their ‘family’ grows as the adventure moves along.

Action and adventure abound and they find their destiny in a place they never could have imagined. Of course, we have to have a bad guy, and he hits very close to home, but there is someone involved who never shows their face. Are they there to save her, or want her for themselves. AND why do they want her? I am curious about who this ‘person’ is and maybe I will find out in the next book, which I hope Katie is rapidly writing.

As I searched around, Ashes and Blood is the only book I have seen by Katie Zaber. If this is her debut novel, she did a bang up job and I can only imagine what is to come. I plan on being along for the ride.

If you are looking for a story to get lost in and escape the real world for a while, I highly recommend Ashes and Blood by Katie Zaber.

There was so much potential with this story but it just fell short and flat for me. The whole premise of the story was interesting but I felt that the characters lacked depth and I ended up skimming a good portion of the pages.

An imaginative portal fantasy that falls short on its execution.

I adore portal fantasy: from magic doors to books. Worlds that are a portal away fill me with pure undulated excitement. From The Ten Thousand Doors of January to The Chalice and the Crown and everything in between. I was delighted to stumble across Ashes and Blood promising an otherworldly tree transporting four teen girls to an exotic other planet, fae and magic.

I could see the potential of the story, but, sadly, this book fell short in writing, consistency and character depth. Although the writing improved somewhat and the characters took shape as the book progressed, it wasn’t enough, and I skimmed a lot of sections that were written inconsistently.

What I did like was the imagery in the opening chapters - an exotic jungle complete with elephant-sized panthers and trees with jade green bark - was gorgeous, the cinnamon-roll bartender Blue and the fae elements. Unfortunately, the rest of the book just wasn’t for me.

Ashes and Blood is the first book in the Dalya series and it starts off with a very weird tree! Even though this book is listed as New Adult I still, somehow, managed to convince myself it was Young Adult. So it was a bit of a shock when I read about them drinking and swearing. Still, it was my error, and one I quickly got over as I immersed myself in their adventure.

The details in this story are simply amazing. The descriptions given help the reader to see every tree, person, and situation so clearly. The action is non-stop and with enough twists and turns to keep anyone happy. There is romance but not with the main character (or at least, not yet. I'm hopeful for the future!) which made a nice change.

And speaking of characters, the ones in here will jump out at you. They are so well described and three-dimensional, you will have no issue with remembering who is whom. I loved the girls' different attitudes and capabilities, PLUS how Tristan was the one to watch, even though he came across as the most easy-going!

This was a fantastic start to the series and I really can't wait to read more and return to Dalya. Absolutely recommended by me.

**I received a free copy of this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review.**

I found the start of this book really jarring, however once I kind of settled into the book as such then I really enjoyed it. I did feel like a LOT happened. Potentially too much for just one book? I really liked the world building, and aspects of the character building, however as I have just said it was almost like too much happened to really be able to accept what was happening.

The story was quite unique - obviously as someone who reads a lot of fantasy this felt like it was different and interesting. I enjoyed the shift and strength of the main character, and her determination to be true to herself, this was really fantastic, and you can tell this female character is written by a female author.

I liked the slow revelation of the world, and the teasing of things that I do not yet know. I would definitely like to read the next in this series.

Ashes And Blood is a young adult fantasy novel. Megan and her friends stumble across a mysterious tree, transposing them to a exotic planet with strange creatures. Megan finds herself in a strange town still fighting the plague. The more Megan learns about the strange world of Dayla , the more she realises that finding away home isn't important compared to everything at stake.
I read this novel in one sitting. It was a interesting and brilliant debut novel by Katie Zaber and looking forward to reading more.

Spoiler free review: I started reading Ashes and Blood with little background on the story, and I am glad I went in blind. The book starts out as what you might expect to find in a portal fantasy: a bunch of young adults are suddenly teleported to a dangerous and unknown magical world far away from Earth.

For the first several chapters, the characters spend time in a town most memorable for its scenery. I wasn’t particularly fascinated by any of the main characters at first, but perhaps I misjudged them, or perhaps the events and twists starting at about 50% through the story changed my mind and made everyone more interesting. Either way, the likeability of the main POV character Megan grew on me as the pages went by.

Without going into spoiler details, one of the main characters gets separated from their group and that’s where the plot really starts picking up. There are some interesting concepts in store for the reader and some interesting moral considerations contemplated by the characters too. Coincidentally, these new circumstances force our main protagonist to grow into the larger roles set up for them, and that is where I got hooked into the plot.

Ashes and Blood may just be the tip of the iceberg in what could develop be a lengthy ongoing fantasy series. I’m excited to see where this story is heading and how character background details I once considered insignificant in the first half of the book might actually lead to something awesome. I’m looking forward to reading book 2 and believe there’s a lot of potential for this series to grow.

Great plot- potential for a 5 star read, with some snags that kicked me out of “the zone”.

New worlds that are low tech but high magic, secret identities, knowledge hidden from people for extended times, great adventures, escapes and hardships! Here’s hoping the story is going where I think it is! Now seriously keep in mind how much I do love the book before seeing the below constructive criticism- still worth the read hands down, but I believe this is a early novel done by this writer so it will be interesting to see how these things develop or if it’s just part of their style.

A little smoother transitions could have been made that would add context, and depth to the book. Characters could see a few things leading up to extreme mindset-changes instead of hearing one sad story. Some romances could be a little less obvious- alluded to and then caught being a couple, or have some trigger event draw couples together. Somethings could have used more foreshadowing or events that made you think - and some foreshadowing (such as epilogue) might have had more oomph if it had previously had been hinted at in a lore vague manner so that the bigger lead up didn’t seem out of the blue.

The storyline is inventive and entertaining, with some gaps in the worldbuilding...but not enough to ruin the experience for me. Also, there are some grammatical and spelling errors that are easy to fix...but the author needs to take the effort to do so. Anyway...all that aside, and in spite of the fact that these things usually bother me immensely, I really did enjoy this book. The many characters are unique and 'different'. I ended up liking most of them in spite of their flaws. The most problematic is the main character, who tends to overexplain her motives for her actions. I really do have mixed feelings but will read the next book to see where it all is going...and hope that the things that bothered me are missing in that one!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author Katie Zabor. I absolutely loved this book! Traveling through a parallel dimension to a world of very different creatures they have only read about in story books they find themselves making friends and a few enemies. The world of the fae and their way of life is very different from what they are use to. Let alone being groomed as a future queen.

I can't wait to read the next book in line.

The setting and the world the author creates is enthralling and captivating. I loved everything about this book and I cannot wait until the next one. I really enjoyed the authors writing style and creativity. Highly Recommend for anyone looking for an adventure in a new world.

This book is an interdimmensional fae romance, and adventurous read. There is secret royalty, missing people found, love lost and beginning. The girls and Megan made for very emotional and relatable characters. Megan's moral compass and coldness help her to stand up for herself and others despite being the daughter of a cold fae king. Her friends play a big role in keeping her grounded and they all have their own unique parts in the relationship. Xander and Tristan save them and become lovers to the friends, and help with trying to clean up the mess in the fae world.

‘What animal is a phone?’
Who experiences more culture shock, the young women transported from Earth to Dalya or the Dalyan citizens who don’t believe them about another realm with only one moon? I’d say the Nikes would be a dead giveaway, but then I’ve never travelled via portal. But I think I’d be okay once I taught the natives how to make pizza and raviolis.

It’s one thing to lament no chocolate or cell service, but it’s quite another to miss responsibilities. These young women had jobs and people relying on them. They spend time seriously worrying about how things will turn out back on Earth, but in a mature rather than arrogant way.

I appreciated that the author told us the backstory of the “familiar face”. An entire chapter really was necessary to capture the pain of loss and the loneliness this person experienced (and was still experiencing). Support characters are there for a reason and it helps tremendously when authors flesh them out for us.

Fave quotes:
‘You can travel the same path countless times, but it can sometimes lead to another realm.’
‘Ciara tried to break the ice, but it is super thick.’

The Midas reference was a nice touch (pun intended).

Now on to ‘Below Dark Waters’ then ‘Stranger Shores’.

I received a complimentary copy of the book and am giving my honest review. The story is very enjoyable and has a typical trope, but the way it all comes together is different. There are plenty of things that happen that aren't expected and are revealed nicely.

A tree has grown and Megan and her friends are confused. Their curiosity comes at a price as they are transported to a new world. However, Megan encounters a familiar face and their mission to return home doesn't become so daunting. The chapters switch between Megan and her cousin Kevin, so readers can view both perspectives. The book is also written in the present tense so readers read the narrative in real-time. A personal pleasant way to read since nothing in the future can be foreseen and readers learn what happens at the same time as the characters. The story is character-driven and not a casual read.

This book came to me via Voracious Readers, which has introduced me to a variety of fantasy novels and series.

Four friends are having a walk in the woods and suddenly nothing looks familiar, it's getting dark and something seems to be stalking them. Sounds like the opening of a horror movie, but the twists and turns in the story keep you wanting to know what happens next. The story is presented in chapters from the viewpoint of two different characters which really helps fill in some of the gaps in what the reader is allowed to know.

The main character, Megan, is still grieving the death of her father, worried about her mother sinking into alcoholism and her sister who is more concerned about her appearance and the promise of a modelling career. As with this genre, there are fish out of water and a number of mysteries presented to them. My approach to reviews is not to give too much away, but let me say this: another realm, fae, Druids, and more fish out of water will present themselves. As this is the first in a series, you are left wanting to know what happens next and at the same time, the story isn't cut short. I look forward to finding out what happens to Megan and her friends, Ciara, Sarah and Dana--not to mention Kevin, Brynjar and Manadhon.

When I started this book I was a little unsure whether I wanted to continue, but the further along I got the more I didn't want to stop. As I followed Megan through the book, the more I learnt about this whole new world and the more I fell in love with it. I didn't want to stop reading Ashes and Blood as the suspense kept me wanting to read more constantly. It only took me 4 days to finish the journey of Megan and her friends and now wanting to start the sequel.

A group of friends were in the garden when suddenly a tree, that should not have been there appeared. What was even more bizarre was when going round the tree they ended up in a different place, in fact a different world. They were frightened ,tired ,hungry and scared for the future. Unexpectedly they met a friend, who had disappeared from their world ten years before. What ever was to become of them. As the days lengthened it became clear that there was a lot more at stake than just themselves.

If you love fae books then you have to read this book. It is incredible and it has just the right amount of romance for romance lovers as well.
The scheming and betrayal are 🔥. The characters are great and I found myself rooting for them even the ones you weren’t sure were good or bad. The pacing was my only issue because I felt like it lagged at around chapter 20-24 but it picks back up again.
1000% recommend.
500 out of 5 stars.
Now go read it before I find some way to spoil it all 😉

I was drawn to the cover of this book. I had no idea what I was getting into! I read a little description, and thought it may be a book I would have to force myself to finish! Let me tell you how absolutely wrong I was! This is one hell of a ride! I loved everything about you (other than it ending). I'm excited for book 2 and the rest of the series! I'd love to see it turned into a movie!!

I don't usually write reviews because I'm terrible at writing them, but this book is new and I think it deserves one. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this novel, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. The author did an amazing job of writing a character that is strong, but also has human reactions to the events that happen in her life. The pacing of this book was perfect, I never felt as though the author wanted to rush any part of the story nor did she drag it out either.

I absolutely loved the world-building, Zaber really knows how to draw a reader in and eloquently describe the world that she creates. Like a previous reviewer said, the synopsis doesn't do this book justice, there's just so much that happens, it would be impossible to give a short summary of it.

This is definitely a series that I will remember, and I can't wait for book two.

Interesting journey from Modern times to Fae Fantasy

This story proved interesting right at the start. Which was a good thing, because I spent the first half of the book disliking the main Heroine. I felt that she was more a self centered brat than a responsible adult woman. I did, however, persevere....mostly because the World Building and relationship dynamics were good. The second part of the book got much better, as the main Heroine developed a better personality.

In fact, I was really getting into it...when it ended. I was a bit let down at that point. I felt that it ended without enough direction in regard to where the next book is going. But hey, at least it wasn't a cliffhanger. Overall, it needs a little more polishing and editing...but I liked it, and will probably read the next book. 3-1/2 stars for me.

This book starts out really really slow. I skipped through most of the first third of the book. It starts out with four girls going camping. They look at a strange tree and suddenly they on Another planet/dimension. One of the first people they meet, is one of the girl’s cousin....he’s been missing from earth for 8 years. Strange things start happening to Meagan, one of the girls. Then she gets whisked away and ends up in a castle. There are Faye, druids, and who knows what else in this new world. They are all in for the fight of their lives. Unfortunately I think the fight will mostly be in the second book.

I was asked to review this book in exchange for a free copy from voracious readers. Fantasy novels aren't typically my go to genre but but description sounded interesting so I decided to try something new. I think that this book and series would be a great read for a teen audience, it had romance, action, and magic all the typical elements you would expect from a fantasy novel written for a YA audience. It also does a fairly good job of blending our world with this other world the main characters find themselves in. Overall I found it to be a little slow to start but was intrigued by the end, the author did an excellent job of eluding what to expect from the series moving forward.

Disclaimer - I was given a free copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for a honest review

I really really loved this book. The world building was fantastic and I really liked the characters, even the ones I hated were really well written.

This is def done in a YA fantasy style which is right up my alley and would appeal to people who like authors like Sarah J Mass.

As soon as I finished I bought the second book of the series and can't wait to get into it
