A Dark Sports Bully Romance

Love is meant to be a fairytale. But I’m more of a nightmare kinda guy.

Dear Beth,

Your frizzy hair.
The waterfall of enthusiasm in your eyes…
…and that smile.

It’s the smile that did it, Beth.

You’re too happy.

Too happy for someone who has nothing.

Happier than me, your high school bully.
Captain of the Hockey Team.
Rich.
Talented.
And so broken on the inside no amount of adhesive can ever put me back together again.

I have everything, Beth. And at the same time, I have nothing.

You have nothing and yet, somehow you manage to have everything.

Something needs to change.
So, I’m gonna make you an offer.
One Hundred Thousand Dollars for the chance to ruin you for good.

Leave the offer on the table, you’re screwed.
Take it, you’re screwed.
Either way, Beth, you lose.
But apparently so do I.

Sincerely,
Your Bully Husband

No, no, no, and one thousand times NO.

Last year I promised myself that I would never read another Highschool romance ever again. Perhaps there is a nice one out there, but the ones that I’ve had the misfortune of reading... They’ve simply alienated me with the genre. Strongly.

But the thing is, I didn’t know this was a Highschool romance. The blurb mentioned the male character being the husband, for pity’s sake. Who in their right mind marries in Highschool??

Regardless, when I found out, I was shocked and inwardly groaning, but I gritted my teeth and bore through it. I was hopeful it wouldn’t be too bad...

It wasn’t as bad as some other books I won’t bother mentioning, but let me say it was no less irritating.

The story is about this girl called Beth who is poor - and I’m mentioning it because it’s a big deal in this bloody story. Why, you may ask? Because the school she goes to is some big-shot institution for wealthy kiddos, and she’s able to attend only thanks to a scholarship. The other kids are clearly not happy about her being around, and for that reason (as immature idiots do in these situations) they have been bullying her for some time.

Surprise! Maverick (the male MC) is obviously one of the bullies, if not the main culprit. He’s British, ya know? God forbid you forget that, but even if you do, they will remind you every other sentence, don’t worry.
“But what are you worth to anyone here, to any team here if you’re back in England at the beck and call of your Queen?”

Uhm, what?

But back do him being a bully: if bumping into her, physically pushing her around, or throwing ketchup on her is not enough, this shit also happened:

“Hey, bookworm,” Maverick calls after me with a stupid grin on his face.
“You probably wanna stop, drop, and roll.”
The acrid scent of burning polyester finally fights its way past the stench of moldy soup. I look over my shoulder in panic just as the flames reach my ass.

He sets her on fire. Let’s just take a second to make this sink in. The male MC, who is clearly going to be the main romantic interest, sets her clothes on fire.

Now, you are all welcome to check out my library and you can see all the messed up and dark shit I read. BDSM? Check. Non-consent? Check. Abuse? Double check. Truly evil and dark heroes? Triple check.

But setting a person on fire? And then giggling and shrugging and laughing about it??

Out of everything, this made me very, very angry.

But nobody cares, you know? Because Maverick is going to be deported soon. And to stay in the country he should marry a US citizen. And Beth needs the money he would offer to marry him, so of course she goes through with it. Countless bullying is forgotten overnight. Poof!

One day they communicate only through screaming and yelling and angry ‘fucks’ being thrown around. Then the next day they casually open their hearts to each other and cry together and confess their deepest feelings and fears.

His hold on me tightens, and it’s almost sad how much desperation there is in the way he clings to me.
Something is broken in this beast of a man. And no matter how tightly he holds on right now, I know that by the time morning comes, he’ll remember that I’m not the one who has the tools to fix him.

*GAG*

Then sex sex sex. Making puppy eyes. Smirks. Breathy moans. Sex sex sex.

Some random bullshit. They soooooo love each other now. Sex. Drama. The mentioning of whores and plastic dolls which seems to be a prerequisite for each and every bloody Highschool romance. Exes. Sex. Jealous other boys that want Maverick to fail at his hockey. Blah blah blah blah.

I just barely managed to keep reading.

I liked NO ONE. Not one, little character.

Beth was also annoying, with her abrasive personality, switching between screetching and smiling prettily, and unfounded vitriol to anyone that even seemed to have a smidgen more money than her:

There’s no confusion in my mind whatsoever about why this sharply dressed smooth-talker standing across from us, leaning against the polished mahogany table, is Maverick’s Attorney. He reeks of privilege and shady business so much, I’m certain it’s a personalized fragrance bottled and sold to morons like them at an obscene price.

I’m sorry we’re not all intelligent, poor individuals like you are, Beth.

And, by the way, apparently you can feel your your pupils when they dilate! Well, I never!
I can feel my eyes dilating as Maverick stares intently into my face as though searching out my secrets.

The only thing I can feel dilating, luv, is the emptiness in my brain as more and more neurons keep winking out of existence.

P.S.: are Beth and Maverick married or not? We are told they got the license, then Maverick calls her his fiancé. Then the next chapter he calls her his wife. Then another character calls her the fiancé. Then wife again. Arrrgh, make up your minds, people!

Style: Enemies to Lovers Romance (High School)
Story: 4/5
Sexual: GOOD
Enjoyment: 4/5
Series:

Can I truly express how much I loved this story? A lot. Maverick, straight up arsehole, make your blood boil arsehole, irredeemable if you ask me. However, the metamorphosis of Maverick was very entertaining to watch. I love his growth. I felt like their should have been some form of closure with his father or confronting.

Beth, I commend her for putting up with so much but was the sweetest person. Her parents, omg, love them. She was the prefect match for Maverick and their connection was awesome.

Apart from your typical mean girls, and a few of Maverick’s friends, I really wanted to see Beth with a friend. I felt like she was missing that connection with a best friend. Although the author gave us her thoughts, would have been nice if she had that person she could confide in.

Overall, this is my first time reading this author and plan on testing the waters with another book. Each book I’ve read you have that one reaction that sums up your experience and all I kept saying was awwwwwwwww after the very last page.

***I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s definitely about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the stories you read. I hope this review was helpful.

Eh... 2 stars and I am very tempted to downgrade it to 1 for poor editing. I mean, did anyone actually bothered to proofread this before it went to printers? Appallingly poor quality of editing.

As to the story itself... Meh, not that great. All the drama with bullying kinda unnatural. I mean at 18 pouring slime over one's hair?.. really?..
I liked Beth in the beginning. She was fun, fighsty, yet kind, with a good head on her shoulders. But bit by bit, her character became boring.
Maverick? Oh, what a stupid name. And the character is just matching.

The lot was a bit dragged out and overdone on the drama bit.

Last third of the book was predictable and very plain.

This was definitely a bully story. There were lots of moments I wanted to junk punch the hero and I have to say he only redeemed himself right at the end. I loved the heroine and her family & the backstory twist with his family was a nice touch.

At first i was really pissed about the H, but i tried to let it go and see how this will go.

I'm happy to say that he grew on me and i could let his childish ways go pretty fast, it was a lil hard the first 30% because he was a real as***e , especially his thinking about the rich and poor people...
BUT he is only 18 years old, it's not an excuse but at the same time he did good after that,so i'm glad it didn't took all the book with him bulling her.

I love how they slowly build their relationship, i'm also happy she was a stubborn girl and she didn't fall for his charms and his beauty, they slowly go there,no body betray alert.

I did enjoy the story, but i didn't give more stars only because i think this story should have been edited better. This is an example :

They get married in like 2 days but from time to time they call each other fiancee instead of husband or wife , even the coach did that, i don't get it why? one chapter is wife and then it's back to the fiance and so on, not in all the book, only the first weeks. This is strange.

Another thing a little annoying only in the first 30% or so, in almost every phrase we are reminded he is English ,he can go back to the Queen (England) etc... we get it ,he is 😆🙄, no reason to keep bringing it up.

It's hard to rate a book when you don't really like the characters. The heroine was okay, but more of a stronger pushover since she was bought off but the hero? The hero disgusted me! I don't care what kind of childhood you had, it is NOT okay to set someone's clothes on fire while she is still wearing them, bully her into marrying you by trying to yank her scholarship away.
He just did not seem redeemable to me. I hated him for the first 75% of the book, and then I pitied him. Not sure which is worse.
His excuse for all his behavior was "he is white, and he is rich", yes he used those words. I am sorry this is un-excusable. The authors should have done better with that excuse.

This book was so unsatisfactory it was ridiculous.. the author skipped all the interesting parts and it's mentioned as past tense after it happens. there was no retribution for the bullies.. H continued to not protect her and be weak as hell. heroine was spineless and let everyone abuse her and just ran away crying..hands down the worst book I've read in a long time. There was no justice it was so frustrating just a weak ass couple. I couldn't relate to their lack of spine. If I could give it a 0 star I would.

Wow....I didn't realise that a book could pull so much emotion out of you.....but this book did just that. Maverick is what you would call a proper bully and how he treats Beth is despicable!! Yes this is your typical high school type bully romance in the beginning but about half way through it turns into so much more....a proper love story, one which i couldn't put down!! I loved the characters, although I could have punched Maverick on a few occasions. The chemistry was really evident between them and the style of writing was really good. Highly recommend and would love to read more from this author!!

Where most in the bully romance category make you feel like you’ve seen it all before, just a few pages in, a girl’s skirt is set on fire, I knew this was going to be something that would keep me interested.
What would happen if you had to marry your bully? Probably something along the lines of what happens for Beth & Maverick.
Pros: growth in both characters, positive behaviors reinforced, a strong willed heroine, a broken bad boy.
Cons: still had a few questions when it was all over, the timeline was a little bit muddled(in the sense that there are some parts where they refer to one another as fiancé, even though previously it was stated that they were already married), lack of a really strong grovel from the hero. He SET HER SKIRT ON FIRE. And I’m fairly certain that he might have apologized once, but honestly, it was weak, and doesn’t stand out.
Overall, I enjoyed the drama, the tension, the plot.

Omg this book took me on such an emotional ride thought each chapter not knowing where the story was going to go.
With such amazing and strong characters in Beth and Maverick we get to see the relationship between them change in a big way from him being the main reason for her being bullied. To the amazing sweet ending that had me holding back the tears. Totally worth reading a million percent

You have to keep reading...

I did not like this book at first. In fact I almost stopped reading it twice. It made me angry. It hurt my heart. But then the characters opened up and the hurt faded. It got better and even when the hurt for the primary female worked it’s way back into the story I knew I wouldn’t give up. Read it and don’t give up on it.

A little underwhelming

I am a little bummed after this read. The plot was very promising but the execution fell flat. While in the beginning of the story Maverick was a bully, this really was not a dark romance. Maybe I would call this a tinted romance. That aside I felt that the story wasn't complete and so many things left unresolved along. Also some really confusing consistency issues. Such as after they are married (which is never really documented in the story), they keep calling eachother Finace. I really struggled to understand the timeline.
Warning Spoilers:
So much was glossed over and not addressed. Like Jared and Selina. They tried to put Maverick in a position to cause him physical harm. After Jared broke his leg, it was left like no longer an issue.
Selina, after finding out she helped Jared and after she tried to take advantage of Maverick in is drunken sleep, once again no resolution or confrontation occured.
Apparently Jared and Savannah did something to Beth's hair at the end of the story that forced her to get it cut. But it is never revealed.
Honestly there is more, these are just to name a few. I just feel like chapters were missing from the book. It was disappointing because it seemed like it was going to be a good story even if it really wasn't dark.

Vile Intentions was a book that kept my interest. The story line was a little different to the usual High School Bully romance which is what I enjoyed.
Maverick is the hot hockey player who every girl is infatuated with. Originally from the UK and living all alone on a Visa sponsored by the school Principal and he comes from some serious money. He has no sense of right and wrong and believes that money can fix everything and that he is untouchable! Beth is the complete opposite. She is the poor scholarship girl whose family is seriously struggling.
With his Visa status in jeopardy, Maverick makes a deal with Beth that will solve both of their problems...but at what cost?
Look, this story wasn't anything amazing but it was still a likable story. There were parts that I found silly but it was an easy read and something a little different to the norm.

This book started with a lot of promise.
The storyline was like the movie ‘Green Card ’
Talented UK hockey playing bad boy Maverick is slated to be a champion, being scouted of NHL teams.
Only problem is...his visa is running out and he is on the verge of being kicked out the country. Plus, he can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble.
Until, his coach comes up with an idea! If he got married he could stay.
Maverick isn’t on board with the plan do much.
Coach points out that the marriage would be more of a business arrangement. One where Maverick could pay a girl to be his wife.
However, all the girls he knows are already quite wealthy, and would have no need for the $
Enter, Bethany (Beth) a A+ student, at the prestigious high school on a scholarship, and the object of intense bullying from Maverick and his cohorts.

As you would expect, each gate each other’s guts. But, Bethany needs the money.Really,Really needs the money, as her mother and father have recently been lost their jobs.
And Maverick needs Bethany to stay married to him (minimum two years) so he can get his contract.

Yeah, I new how this book was going to end but, I thought I would hang in there to watch it unfold.
While the story progressed at a good pace, and Maverick and Beth were great at pushing each other’s buttons, there were elements to the story that were really cheesy.
Like seriously, the part where we were introduced to Bethany love of playing the violin.
That storyline just seemed to come out of nowhere.
And then she names it Eloise ? Which happens to be Mavericks deceased mothers name. The very same mother who’s death he has never gotten over?
Also, who new this would be the women that Bethany absolutely adored. The one who taught her to play while dropping pearls of wisdom about life.
Yeah, this whole introduction of this part, just so Bethany and Maverick would have a reason to become close, stuck out like a sore thumb.

I made it three chapters from the end, but could stomach the HEA I could smell coming.
I liked these two better when they were fighting and plotting to stay away from each other.
Once they got together Bethany became a needy doctor Phil, and Maverick well, he was better when he wasn’t acting like a p#$y whipped wanker (English slang)Three stars.

I unrealistic storyline

It is my first read from this author. The storyline was not that great; however, it got better in the middle of the book. I find it a little unrealistic the expectations from an adult for a teenage student, in particular for an athlete in high school. I am not sure if the author researched any information regarding international athlete visas. The choice given to the main character was either deportation due to visa expiration date or getting married to obtain a green card; I believe it was an exaggeration. All the given reasons were extensively unbelievable. I think there are different regulations for a student to get an extension for a permit, and in particular for an athlete. They can extend their stay in the US after they graduate and change their visa status, mainly when drafted. I believe an international athlete can bit their visa up to five years. However, I liked both characters. Maverick was despicable initially, but then he redeemed himself while Beth was an angel, forgiven, and lovely personality, impossible to not like. Also, it was a little confusing because the author would alternate describing Beth as Maverick's fiance’ or wife. I want to read more about these two characters. As I mentioned, I enjoyed the book towards the middle of the story. The character's behavior was described as a grown-up or even a senior college student, not a high school teenager. At one point, I thought I was reading an adult and not a high school teenage story.

I was looking for a book with angst and enemies to lovers vibes and I found this book. I’ve never read this author but the book was exactly what I expected.

Maverick is a rich British prick who takes things for granted and likes to bully people 😡😡 He bullied Beth with his team players and the cheerleading squad until the guy had to find someone he had to pay to be his wife so that he couldn’t get deported because of the expiration of his visa and his school not wanting to continue sponsoring him.

Beth is a sweet girl who successfully made it in the same school as Maverick thanks to a scholarship in order to go to Juilliard but she found herself bullied and ended getting married to Mavvy for money to help her family financially.

This story was full of rollercoasters; I hated Mavvy so much. I hate people who bully other people because I just can’t understand what it’s bringing to them. But the more I read the book, the more we dig deeper into Mavvy’s past and I still can’t forgive him for what’s he’s done to Beth but he tried. He did everything so that Beth could forgive him, was sweet to her, treated her like a queen, apologised, didn’t hesitate to show how much he loves her in front of the entire school because he cared and didn’t want people to continue attacking her. For that, i tried forgiving just a bit.

I had to FORCE myself to complete this book solely so I could could leave a comprehensive review.

1) The editing of this book was atrocious. It was so terrible it actually made the reading painful at times. I'm dumbfounded someone was paid to perform editing services, because they did no complete their job. It was so bad (misspelling the "heroes" name) it made reading difficult to concentrate.

2) In addition to the abhorrent editing was the laughable plot: two high school seniors "forced" to marry so one could obtain a marriage visa and remain in the country. Please! Also, I'm very appalled someone felt it was logical to romanticize teenage marriage AT ALL.

3) In addition to the unrealistic plot was the fact the author chose to have their female "hero" lack any sort of backbone to the point she FALLS IN LOVE with her tormentor. She was systematically bullied (teachers didn't protect her), harassed, and physically assaulted on school grounds and the adults in positions of authority at school did NOTHING to protect her. That's not an entertaining plot, that's criminal.

Thank goodness Amazon only charged $0.99 for this book, because it's not worth the WiFi used to download it.

“Hating someone for their happiness might just be the saddest thing in the world.”

Maverick is truly, as the title suggests, vile in his actions towards Beth and everyone else. But he is also wonderfully broken and lonely. Once Beth cracks through his hard facade, she is able to find the true Maverick, who is a dream! I loved every minute of this story. I usually struggle to reconcile the hero within the villain, but the author did such a good job through his transition and explaining his past that I fell in love with him along with Beth. I loved the familial connections with Beth’s family and how Maverick fell in love with the family as well as Beth. Because they are teenagers, there were some immature, childish moments, but overall they handled everything pretty well. I especially loved the connections to “Eloise” and Christopher is my favorite book dad ever! My only question is how Beth didn’t end up super pregnant! They never mention birth control and after they started sleeping together I kept waiting for the pregnancy arch to come into play. But this was a great book and probably one of my favorite enemies-to-lovers/bully romances ever!

Not vile, nor dark

I will start by saying that I enjoyed this book. I liked the overall story and the characters. However, this book needs some editing. My biggest issues were timeline & lack of research. For a book touted as a sports romance, it lacked the necessary details about hockey. In the book, everything begins in October, but State Championship doesn't happen until late March/April (depending on location). Next, in hockey scoring 3 goals in a game is a celebrated event (a hat trick) and doesn't happen often. Asking a high school athlete to score 5+ goals during a single game is unrealistic.
Next, the errors in spelling of cheques instead of of checks. Using trolley instead of cart. These are commonly used american terms.
Suzanna was misspelled as Suzanne towards the end of the book.
Lastly, no discussion or use of birth control.

So, it may seem like I hated the book. I enjoyed it that I needed to know what happened, instead of a DNF. This has potential, if the authors go back in and fix the issues. Personally, I would edit and market it with a new title. Something like, The Wrong Reasons.

I fell in love with Maverick and Beth! Beth is a poor student that is constantly bullied by British hockey star and bad boy Maverick. Maverick's dream is to be drafted in the NHL, but his string of bad choices and lack of a green card leaves his principal to pull his sponsorship. The principal and hockey coach give Maverick an ultimatum he needs to secure his green card through marriage and the only female that needs Mavericks money and will agree is Juilliard hopeful Beth. They get married and have it make their marriage look real but still hide it from their peers. The entire story is beautifully written and Beth really shines light in Mavericks's darkness. Their is so much emotion and some heavy situations both students have to overcome balance with passionate scenes. Maverick undergoes an incredible transition from an alphahole to a vulnerable hero you want to root for. I've read these authors before and think this may be their best book yet!

He's loud, obnoxious, willing to throw money at anything and completely n utterly out of control.

She's the good girl, the studious girl, the poor girl.

They find themselves thrown together to save each other. Can two people who are complete opposites learn to survive side by side..?

This is a story all about discovering your truth and being the best you can be.

I wanted to bond with Maverick being a fellow Brit but oh my gosh he was everything I hate in a character until suddenly he wasn't.

I went from dispicing him to loving the bones of him in the blink of an eye. I majorly swooned over him!

Bethany is miss sensible, but when she flashes her wild side she becomes an amazing character! I loved it when she was forced out of her comfort zone!

This for me fits into both the slow burner and bully category and Savannah Rose has done a wonderful job.

Theres a bit of everything in this book. Angst and drama, tears of both joy and heartbreak and last but no means least a dash of darkness.

What more can you possibly need, or want...

Dark, intense and addicting

The nightmare that a loaner at a high class high school are all to real for our heroin.
The characters are ones you immediately get a grip of and feel a connection with.
You can't help but fall in LOVE with Bethany from the start. She's the kindest soul and is treated SO horribly you want to crawl into the book to come to her defense.
Maverick is the worst Alpha Holier than thou Jock and he's the biggest pain in the ass there ever was. He's broken and In turn breaks the seemingly weaker people to boost his ego.
But when their two worlds come to depend on each other will they be able to get past their differences or will his horrible attitude and disrespect ruine them BOTH?
I was feeling all the emotions. I didn't know if I could get past the brutality of the bullies in this story but I finished it and am glad I did.
This is a VERY emotional story keep Kleenex handy.
