The Hots for Scots #3

Getting Scot and Bothered

Rate this book
Rocque Oliphant has simple wants: a fine sword at his hip, a good meal in his belly, and a lusty wench by his side. His position as the Oliphant Commander, leader of men, ensures the first, and his long-term affair with Merewyn, the clan healer, ensures the second and third. She brings him joy—and pleasure—in ways he used to only dream of!

Aye, things are going well in his life...right up until his father—the laird—demands he marry and start producing grandsons. If he wants to beat his brothers at a chance for the lairdship, he needs to find a willing woman to bear his sons--and fast!

But Merewyn, stubborn lass, refuses to marry him, and won't tell him why. Even worse, Rocque can't imagine spending his life with anyone else! If he can't marry another lass, and the one he wants won't marry him, does he have a chance of becoming his father's heir?

As the Oliphant healer, Merewyn knows she's valuable. She knows she doesn't need to marry...except for love. And Rocque, stubborn idiot that he is, won't tell her his true feelings. Can she be blamed for saying nay to his proposal? But now she's running out of time, and has to either tell him the truth or cut him free, because in a few months, everyone in the clan will know her secret!

Rocque might have more brawn than brains, but he knows no lass will hold his affections the way Merewyn does. But is he prepared for the battle it'll take to prove that?

Warning: contains naughty bits. Lots of them. Ridiculous amounts. Also: characters and conversations which are funny enough to make you spit out your tea. For the sake of your Kindle, do not drink liquids while reading this book. That is all; carry on.

⭐⭐💫
2½ stars.

A OK and fast read.

More or less the same issues as in the other books in this series (too anachronistic, formulaic etc.)

A tiny bit better than the other books in the series a little more interesting.
(Somewhat different in personalities/appearances.)

But the violence in this is too much.... especially as this is suppose to be comical or/and a comedic series/book.

This story is so powerful. The anguish in the “conflict” had me in knots, wanting to solve the problems for the characters. I loved Rocque’s commitment, even without realizing his affections, he did everything to be the best partner for Merewyn. Merewyn is such a strong woman, her selfless care of others proving the loving mother she would become. This story had some more intensive story than others in this series, yet that core of humour was still ever present. I can’t help but giggle every time I hear Aunt Agatha’s, “DOOOOMMM!!!”.

Getting Scott and Bothered, by Caroline Lee is a book worth reading. Caroline Lee’s way of telling stories through her books is a work of art. The story was told with ease. The book did not stall or grow boring. Page after page the love story moved with anticipation of what was to happen next.
I was able to understand the Scottish dialect, where I could follow along with the story. The book brought enough steamy scenes between Rocue and Merewyn. So much so, that I thought my iPad would go up in flames from the heat that transpired between the two. Tis what she said. The book did have it’s twist between the villain and Rocue that leaves the reader rooting for the good guy.
All in all, this is a book to read and enjoy. My fellow readers, I recommend this book. Until next time... read on! Tis what she said. Dagnabit, now that saying is going to be stuck in my head.
Tis what she said. Lol, I walked into my own joke. Go ahead. Say it. I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.

Aye, 'twas a pile of shite.

The author described this book as "hilarious and steamy". It was neither.

There was one joke which was killed swiftly by overusing it.

Steam? Where? Three scenes and they all were without any chemistry. Maybe because they were already a couple. We didn't see them grow closer. Fall in love.

And the villain! I expected him to twirl his mustache. He was so cartoonish. A parody.

I know this was a different time but do we have to make fun of a woman's reproductive system? Calling it gross? Having an MMC think that the heroine bleeds once a month because he was too vigorous?? 🥴

Another entertaining read by Caroline Lee. I enjoyed Rocque and Merewyn’s story and appreciate how the author has had three couples now within the Oliphant Family with vastly different situations. This couple was the more rare situation of the male desiring marriage while the female evades proposals. The banter between the Oliphant’s is my favorite. There is a whole scene in this book that makes me understand why sex education needs to exist, lol! Can’t wait to read more!

When I want lots of entertaining circumstances in a story, I know Caroline Lee will deliver exactly what I am craving, and her The Hots for Scots series is an outstanding example. There is an abundance of humorous scenes in GETTING SCOT AND BOTHERED, and I actually had to stop reading several times because I was laughing so hard. Many of the visuals I was able to picture because of Ms. Lee’s skillful writing are noteworthy for their hilarity, while other moments will be remembered for their serious emotional issues. There is definitely a perfect balance between comedy, escalating challenges, and heated passion.

Being the man who commands the soldiers who reside at Oliphant Castle is the perfect responsibility for Rocque Oliphant, and he feels all is well. Upon hearing the requirement made by his father that the first of his six sons to marry and have a son will be the next laird, he already has a woman in mind. Merewyn is the clan’s healer, and the past year spent exclusively with her makes wedding her an easy choice. But after Rocque has repeatedly asked her to be his wife and she keeps rejecting his offer, he wonders if coming up with a new tactic might persuade her.

There are so many delightful events in GETTING SCOT AND BOTHERED. I could not stop from chuckling when the male brothers and cousins were making zany remarks, as their comments were so extraordinary in this story. Numerous other situations caused laughter because of the words spoken by a character, and those said by the elderly aunt were particularly funny at times. When the romantic couple, Rocque and Merewyn, have conversations, they show a quick-wit and are so genuinely comfortable with each other that I just had to smile. With every new adventure in their lives, I came to adore them more and more.

It is so enjoyable to read stories that are all truly individual to the character and not the same old plots and Getting Scott and Bothered is truly an enjoyable read! Caroline Lee has written a madcap romp through the Highlands as Aunt Aretha hearing the Ghostly Drummer and yelling dooomed, "Tis what she said". I loved reading about Rocque and Merewyn, two head-strong individuals and the appearances from characters from the previous novels that we love. How many times will Rocque ask Merewyn to marry him and will she finally say yea in this melting romance that was pure delight, filled with boundless humor, hilarious events, intense emotions from despair to sizzling passion and the love of one crazy family!

I love me a himbo hero. Roque was such a sweetheart. I honestly felt a little bad for him since Merewyn wasn't really treating him fairly, but I do like them together in the end.

The humor was a little childish in this one but this was still kind of funny.

lol Caroline Lee delivers again with the laugh out loud shinanigans of the Oliphant clan. It seems the series is steadily getting more and more serious. Still have plenty of "startle my cats laughing out loud" moments, but oof... poor Merewyn. She went through it there for a hot minute. can't wait to read more!

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

My favorite in this series so far.

OMG is this book funny and then serious. It’s full of “that’s what he/she said” jokes that had me laughing out loud. But then, towards the end, it got pretty serious with some events that had my heart pounding.

Like the first two audiobooks in this series, William Macleod did a great job with all of the different voices. His voice had the appropriate inflections for the humor and the more serious parts.

Rocque (Rock) is not the smartest Oliphant brother but he has a big heart and he cares deeply for his family and his woman, Merewyn. Unfortunately, he doesn’t always know how to express his love and Merewyn wants to hear the words. He eventually learns to say them and she also learns that actions sometimes do speak louder than words.

Content warning: abduction and abuse that may be triggering for some readers.

This is a fun series. I love all of the brothers. When I need a good laugh, I pick up a Caroline Lee book.

I loved the strength that Merewyn has. She’s not going to settle for anything. Rocque is sweet. He’s not always good with words but he shows people how he feels with his actions.

You don’t need to read the books in order but I think it’s better if you do.

I’m looking forward to reading the next book. I really want to know which brother will be the next laird!

Nothing about this book was particularly bad or poorly written. The rating is mostly due to my own preferences and how little I found entertaining in the story. I also chose to skip the first two books as the trope of this one caught my interest but alas it just didn't work for me. The humor fell flat for me and the obvious dragging out of the lack of communication and a poorly written crazed villain just ruined it for me. I know it was a short read and I usually let ALOT slide.. so although it was sometimes cute it just wasn't a good read for me. Other's will likely enjoy the light-heartedness and humor that I didn't.

Getting Scot and Bothered, Book 3 of The Hots for Scots series, was about Rocque Oliphant, commander of the Oliphant warriors, and one of the six illegitimate sons of Laird William Oliphant, and Merewyn (the author didn't see fit to give her a maiden name, so she was either Oliphant because she was from the clan, or the author just didn't bother to give her a full name), the clan's healer and midwife.
Rocque's father, the Laird Oliphant, sat him and his five brothers and set forth an edict...whichever of his six sons married first and produced him with an heir would become the next Laird in his stead...and their father was determined for each of them to marry within the year.
While Rocque wasn't opposed to following his two brothers, Finn and Duncan, by getting married, he did have one problem. Merewyn, his long-time mistress, had rejected his proposal...and refused to tell him why.
When Merewyn finally got around to telling Rocque why she kept rejecting his multiple proposals, he was so floored, it brought him to his knees and stole his ability to say a word as she ran from him. As Rocque fought with himself over the situation, his twin Malcolm helped him see the truth he hadn't been aware of...but was he too late with that knowledge?
Once again, the humor overtook this story and ran away with the sarcasm and the sexual innuendoes, making this another excellent story. So what if it wasn't historically accurate? So what if the verbiage was more modern than antiquated? The angst and drama were more prevalently woven into this novel than any of the previous books, but with how the plot and storyline were written, it was a welcome necessity. There were more emotions flooding this story that kept the reader glued to the pages
The characters were, once again, very well-developed, mature, and fleshed out. The antagonists and protagonists were easy to spot, but not all of their intentions were. The way the story played out was so well done with all the twists and turns that there was never a dull moment. This was another five-star novel and it found a place with the other Keeper for the Shelves books.

Tis What She Said - after reading this book just try to get that phrase out of your head. This book was such fun and a good laugh is what we all need during stressful times.

Oh what a good life Rocque Oliphant, Clan Commander, has - a good sword, a full belly and a fiery woman in his bed. Now, his father, the laird, has given him & his brothers an ultimatum to marry & the first to present him with a grandson will take his place as the new laird of Oliphant Clan. Rocque has had a long affair with Merewyn, the clan healer, and they bring each other happiness and pleasure but will she marry him?

But Merewyn, the stubborn lass, refuses to marry him and won’t tell him why. Rocque can’t imagine spending his life with anyone else! So if he can’t marry another lass, and the one he wants won’t marry him, what chance does he have to secure the title of the new laird?

Merewyn is a romantic; she will never marry unless it is for love, and her importance to the clan as their healer keeps her life secure without having to marry. She loves Rocque but when he asks her to be his wife, he doesn't mention love and her answer is a big "no". Well, I can understand her decision but she also has a secret she is keeping and she must tell Rocque or let him go.

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

4 stars Caroline Lee

Stars 4 (Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)

quick short stories; each story around 1 of 6 brothers and their sister.

if your a stickler for historical accuracy, don’t read these books.

There is a ‘modernism’ in the humour and dialogue (nothing that vexed me).

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). You get past book characters in this story.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. The Scottish dialogue wasn’t difficult to follow.

Laugh out loud humorous moments.

Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top, some ‘dirty’ words intertwined rightly in the story telling. Short story 2.5/5 hotness and steam.

Totally recommend author.

Will read the next book by the author.

The Tale of a Gentle Giant

Getting Scot and Bothered is primarily a sexy comedy, but I feel that I should mention there are sections of the book which may trigger survivors of sexual assault. Hamish is one horrible villain who, thankfully, gets his just desserts.

That being said, I enjoyed Merewyn and Rocque’s love story. Merewyn is a strong, independent, respected member of her clan, and she’s comfortable standing up for herself. I think a lot of non-historical romance readers think that our heroines are always helpless damsels in distress. Merewyn goes against that stereotype. I also appreciated that while we’re told in the preceding books and in this one that Rocque is physically strong and powerful as a son of the laird, he treats her with love and respect.

Caroline Lee has done a great job in making each Oliphant brother unique. I look forward to reading Malcolm’s story and to finding out who ultimately becomes the new laird.

Getting Scot and Bothered, book three of Caroline Lee’s Hot for Scots series is great! Rocque Oliphant has brawn more than brains, and is commander of the Oliphant men. He’s also been living with the Oliphant healer Merewyn for nearly a year. So when the Laird orders his sons to marry and give him grandsons, he know’s Merewyn is the one, but she turns him down and won’t tell him why. Merewyn is holding out for love, but Rocque hasn’t said he loves her. But Merewyn is keeping a secret, and she either has to accept his proposal or set him free. One of my favorite scenes in the book is Rocque’s brother Malcolm explaining a woman’s cycle to him. It’s definitely a snorting laugh out loud moment! But the book has its touching moments as well, but no spoilers from me! Rocque and Merewyn are wonderful together, and their love is a beautiful thing to read. I listened to the audiobook narrated by William Macleod, who does a wonderful job!

Rocque and Merewyn are an established couple. Rocque keeps proposing and Merewyn turns him down each time. Merewyn is a strong female lead. She is assured of her place in the clan and of her ability to take care of herself. She wants to marry for love. Rocque’s father has declared that his successor will be the son that marries and has a son first. Merewyn is worried that is the only reason Rocque wants to marry her. Rocque’s actions show he cares for her but he doesn’t use the words. Rocque and Merewyn are my favorite couple of the series so far. The book is filled with Caroline Lee’s trademark humor and even provides a possible origin story for the “that’s what she said” jokes. This book does get darker than the previous two books. The book is all in all a fun read and I recommend it for anyone who does not take their historical romance too seriously.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrator William Macleod is fantastic. I highly recommend this version.

The Drummer is at it again!

Yes, the Drummer is at it again! This time Rocque is the one DDDDDOOOOOOMMMMED! Rocque, the strong warrior of the bunch, head of the guards. He may not be the brights of the brothers but he was the biggest and strongest. He has the heart of gold, gentlest touch, and fiercest scowl.

Merewyn, the clan healer, has been with Rocque for a year now. She finds the need to know exactly how he feels towards her hard to ask. With half dozen marriage proposals, she wants to say yes, but, having watched her parents misery, it is not for her.

Join the fun, comedy of witty joking, living family, and romance world that Caroline Lee brings that smile, laugh, and happy ends you can not miss

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 1.5 🌶️. So, even tho I moved to Scotland 3 years ago, it took me a while to ken the language. Ye Ken? Add to the fact it’s in a medieval clan castle with all that goes with that and you have some fairly complex sentences. I got used to it however by around chapter 4. There are a lot of characters introduced fairly early on, and it took me a while to get attached to them.

The humour in this is funny, if a little cringy at times. But this book is definitely more of a light-hearted feel-good short read than anything else. It is more character focused than plot but I still enjoyed it.

I was just completely delighted with the story of Rocque & Merewyn! Visiting the Oliphant Keep is always such a delight, but I was especially intrigued with the independent Merewyn and the slightly mule-headed Rocque. Somehow they managed to dance around their feelings for a year, while embarking on a passionate affair...never mind that our lady is already pregnant, and refuses to settle for less than love. The naughty bits were especially titillating and there’s no question that they suit each other perfectly. Can’t wait to visit the Keep again soon!

Is it love

Rocque is in love but doesn't recognize it! It can be difficult if you have never been in love! Merewyn the village healer knows she's in love and she has a secret! No one has guessed her secret! Her and Rocque can barely keep there hands off one another and everyone is not happy for their relationship! There is someone evil in the village that wants what they are doing but in a very sick and demeaning way! Merewyn is frustrated by Rocque not admitting his love for her and is this the time for a villain to strike?

The title should be a clue that it's not a prim and proper tale.

This story of the series was not nearly as fun as the previous book. There is a villain who was so awful that I wanted to stop reading because he had me so upset. I hate men who abuse women and children, so I found it hard to read that part. It was a real nail biter. But I read on and was happy with the ending, just could have done without that part in the book at all. It's not what I expected after the hilarity of the last one, and I found that the sex in this one was much more crude and porn like.

This book did NOT live up to the promise based on the first two books in this series. I wish it'd had come with a warning of the violence and threat of violence that took up FAR too much of the book.

I loved the first two of the series but won't bother with the rest until I can figure out if there are more such violent scenes. They didn't mesh with the idea this is a comedic series as is stated.

I am loving this series. Merewyn and Rocque are such a great couple. Together for a year Rocque keeps asking her to marry him. She refuses, she is holding out for his love. She is also hiding a secret that makes it hard for her to turn down his proposals. Before he has a chance to profess his love, someone else has their eye on her and will do anything to make her his. Now Rocque must save her and convince her of his love. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

This is Rocque and Merewyn's story!

I am enjoying this series very much. When you experience one of Caroline Lee's stories you can expect to feel many ways from pure joy when you are laughing from a chuckle to laughing uout loud (I have been known to wake my husband from a sound sleep), to heartache with tears even the "Ugly sobbing cry at times. So if you enjoy a book that you can feel a part of , then this book/series for you!

A cute read

I enjoyed reading about Rocque and Merewyn. She's the healer for the clan and he's the commander of the warriors, they've been together for over a year and he's asked her multiple times to marry him only to be refused. A troublesome individual almost ended her life and the one together with Rocque. I'm glad they get to have their HEA. I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
