Натхненний однаковою мірою як Данте так і шаленими мультиками Warner Bros, і Єронімом, зрозуміло, Босхом, в історіях Пола царює бурлеск, балаган і навіть місцями буфонада. Адже ми знаємо, що навіть коли ллються лайно чи сеча в очі, завжди лишається простір і для чогось простого і земного, хоч би й на соковите червоне яблуко.

Пол Кіршнер – (народився 29 січня 1952 року) американський письменник та ілюстратор, який ще з 70-х років тим чи іншим робом працює в сферах причетних до мальованих історій, від власне коміксів, стрипів та дизайну іграшок, до графічного дизайну. Він починав як помічник легендарного Воллеса Вуда, а його власні сюр- і реалістичні вимальовані стрипи публікувалися у 70-80-х у High Times, Heavy Metal та Epic. Його найвідоміша робота, мабуть, The Bus, двоярусні чорно-білі стрипи, які тривалий час виходили у Heavy Metal.

Довго шукав настрій для прочитання цієї роботи. Якось все ніяк не міг підступитись, а ось і випала нагода за раз прочитати. Це весела, в міру абсурдна й каламбурна колекція маленьких стріпів про пригоди середньовічного лобуряки та його качечки в пеклі. Звернення до образу Ієроніма Босха вкрай влучне, адже художник відомий своїми сюрреалістичними картинами про рай і пекло, наші гріхи й потаємні бажання, здатними подивувати навіть сьогоднішніх продвинутих глядачів. Змішування стереотипних, масових уявлень про пекло з комічними ситуаціями, де часто-гуто обігруються сучасні проблеми й процеси, виявилось більш аніж вдалим.

Мені трохи бракнуло, як не дивно, гумору, адже не всі стріпи були смішними й зрозумілими (не виключаю, що в мене з гумором не завжди добре, тому спишемо це на мою заанґажованість). Також алгоритм зображуваних ситуацій дещо повторювався, а відтак не викликав подивування. Усе ж, робота Пола Кірхнера, знаного представника андеґраундної коміксової сцени, може бути чудовим поповненням у колекцію, яка блискуче розбавить супергероїку чи інші жанри. Висока якість видання додає особливої тактильності під час читання, тому поспішайте придбати й пореготати разом із Єронімом і Босхом.

лобуряку єроніма витурюють із церкви, де він спав на вівтарі, і так починається іще один паскудний – зате останній – день його життя. на наступних двох сторінках єронім прочухується, краде іграшкове каченя, безславно гине й потрапляє в потойбіччя, яке доволі скоро виявляється пеклом.

решта книжки – це пекельні пригоди єроніма, босха (за що, за що качечку?) і вдоволених своєю роботою червонопиких чортів. у пеклі багато лайна – що можна зрозуміти, адже скатологія й есхатологія звучать як близнючки-сестри – і навіть трохи надії, хоча на вході висить дантове попередження про те, що її треба облишити, і стоїть охоронець із рамкою. утім, надія – теж лайно, бо це вона забезпечує успіх різноманітним пекельним підступам; без неї, скажімо, ніхто не повівся б на оголошення, що за одними з отих дверей – вихід назовні.

може, це такий останній прояв гуманізму: застерегти на вході, що від сподівань буде тільки гірше. проте, з другого боку, в одному коміксі ченця у францисканському габіті прямо з пекельних просторів забирають на небо (вочевидь, це не зовсім католицьке потойбіччя, бо в католицькому для таких випадків є чистилище; але чому тоді францисканець? може, він підставний персонаж і ніякого неба нема?), тож місце для крихітного хробачка надії все-таки лишається. воістину, майстерне катування.

Paul Kirchner continues to amaze me. I started reading Hieronymus in it's digital form and the moment tanibis published it in english, it was an insta-buy.

A comical hell is the new home of a petty sinner called Hieronymus and his wooden duck toy Bosch. Kirchner plays with the tools of the comic medium, breaking the conventional narration techniques and the fourth wall. He's not as surreal as in the bus 1&2 but more comical and round'n'about, certainly offering strips more appealing to the general public than his previous works.

Bottom line is, Paul Kirchner is a chapter by himself and we, the comic reading community, are happy to have him as an asset. His writing is crazy clever and fresh, his drawing style special and relaxing to the eye. Tanibis did an excellent job publishing this, top-notch quality, leathery hardcover and an epilogue by Satan himself :P

Видавництво, звичайно, розбалувало читачів концептуальними соціальними коміксами, і тому цей з великою кількістю жартів про лайно видався багатьом низькою літературою.
Але життя таке зараз непросте, що іноді хочеться відключити мізки і просто пореготати з замальовок з життя в пеклі по одній на сторінку)))

Hieronymus je pobuda, ochlasta a zloděj. Nebo spíše byl - 13. březen léta páně 1508 byl totiž posledním dnem jeho pozemského života. Toho rána ukradl dřevěnou kačenku malému chlapci, který ji pojmenoval Bosch. A potom Hieronymus zemřel - uklouzl na hovnu a rozmázl se o zeď. Než bys řekl švec, tak stál u brány pekla. I s dřevěnou kačenkou coby mementem jeho poslední hanby. Ten den začal jeho posmrtný život plný nekončícího utrpení.
Hieronymus & Bosch je kolekce stovky celostránkových stripů líčících Hieronymovy útrapy v pekle. 100 stran plných absurdního humoru. Je to děsná sranda, protože čerti jsou zlomyslní záškodníci a navíc jsou hodně vynalézaví ve vymýšlení všelijakých pastiček a podrazů na své svěřence. Takže spolu s čerty se na Hieronymův účet dobře baví i čtenáři. Hieronyma s Boschem však stále neopouští naděje na útěk z pekla. Autorem knihy je americký spisovatel a ilustrátor Paul Kirchner.

Hieronymus is a rogue, a boozer and a thief. Or better he was - March 13th in 1508 was the last day of his life. That morning he stole a wooden duck from a little boy who named her Bosch. And then Hieronymus died - slipped on the poop and smashed into the wall. In two shakes he stood at the gate of hell. Even with a wooden duck as a memento of his last shame. That day began his afterlife full of endless suffering.
Hieronymus & Bosch is a collection of 100 full-page comics strips depicting Hieronym's hardships in hell. 100 pages full of absurd humor. It is so funny, because the devils are mischievous and they are also very resourceful in devising all kinds of traps and tricks on their "clients". So along with the devils readers have a good time during watching of Hieronymus suffering. Hieronyms with Bosch however still keep the hope of escape from hell. The book is written by American writer and illustrator Paul Kirchner.

Стопійсят відтінків (без)надії. А ще - марноти. Зусиль, праці, творчої реалізації (на цих стріпах майже плакала), спроб побудувати нормальні стосунки, спроб отримати нормальні відповіді на питання або бодай притомні робочі інструкції - це теж марнота з марнот. Страшенно життєвий комікс, що підштовхує перевірити: а ми точно не в пеклі живемо? Але доволі одноманітний в побудові мізансцен і прикро зарефренений. Хоча чому прикро? Це теж прояв марноти.

Трохи "сракопердильні" жарти, як каже Тайлер Андерсон, але в цілому дуже винахідливо, я б стільки тортур не вигадала)
Особливо сподобалася його качечка. А, і ще - тут нема слів, самі картинки, люблю такі комікси!

Можна вічно дивитися на три речі… Страждання інших, іронічно-комічне страждання інших та іронічний мальопис про страждання інших.
Єронім — безсоромний лобуряка, який все життя грішив і нагрішив. Аж ось він отримує заробітну плату за свої гріхи — смерть. У розпалі крадіжки качура на коліщатках, тікаючи від правосуддя долі, він послизнувсь на якомусь лайні, і сідлаючи “здобич” — зустрічає свою смерть.
У мене для вас дві новини. Перша — надії в пеклі немає. Друга — надія в пеклі все ж є.

"Люди часто говорять про все лайно, з яким їм доводиться миритися в житті, тому я припустив, що якщо вони опиняться в пеклі, їм доведеться змиритися з набагато більшим", - пише Кіршнер і продовжує: "Моє пекло — це менше про муки, ніж про розчарування, загострення та приниження, і лайно здавалося хорошим способом зобразити це".
У пеклі Кіршнера повно лайна: басейни, гейзери, автомат з морозивом. І не тільки чорти та демони постачають екскременти. Ні, ще більш образливим для побратимів Єроніма є той факт, що ангели з небес вгорі, також постійне джерело приниження.

І от парадокс, чортяки Кіршнера викликають більше симпатії аніж жорстокі янголи. На відміну від останніх, чорти... Співчувають?! Звичайно, вони катують прокляті душі, але роблять це з химерною елегантністю, яка ледь не виявляється люблячою.
Чортяки катують Єроніма та інших мешканців пекла, пропонуючи щось веселе чи розважальне для своїх в’язнів, лише щоб перетворити потенційне задоволення на принизливе покарання.

Шлях Єроніма в пеклі демонструє нам стратегією опору. Як і більшість лобуряк, він “творча особистість”, а пекло — його творчий простір. Єронім пробує свої сили у всіляких творчих напрямках: займається дрібним вандалізмом лишаючи глузливі написи, лупає скалу і створює скульптуру, малює картини і навіть влаштовує тіньову лялькову виставу. Творчі дії є формою протесту. І хоч Єронім і проклятий, але принаймні він збирається щось з цим зробити і трохи повеселитися.

І як підсумок, далі короткий гайд від Єроніма. Якщо все ж потрапив у пекло, то:
1. Не зраджуй собі. Кпини чортів! Так, ніхто не зможе похизуватися тим, що “пустощі вдалися!”, але не відмовляйте собі у “насолоді” від спроб.
2. Боріться за свої права і ведіть за собою інших. Ну бо разом на вилах сидіти веселіше.
… ну і можна вічно дивитися на...
3. Якщо вже потрапляєш в пекло, то зроби так, аби з тобою був вірний “Кря, бля!” качур. У “Ставку лайна” разом буде не так нудно.

Якщо оцінювати мальопис за шкалою від 1 до 5, най буде 5!

And this is a completely different comic book )). Here we have very classical comics: funny and light, very light on the surface (but with some deeper meanings, of course, for those who want to find them). Moreover, it’s a book without words, so you can “read” it in just half an hour, I suppose. It’s not even a story: you have a general idea of the setting and key characters from the beginning, but that’s all. Every page of the book is an entire mini-story, a humoristic sketch. The main hero may obviously die on one page but start new mini-adventures again on the next one unscathed, and all this is repeated several dozen times.

More than anything, it reminded me of works by Herluf Bidstrup — yeah, those short strips with mini-stories in each one; only this book is about the same place and the same characters over and over again (well, you can also compare it to “Tom and Jerry” series, for example).

However, this light and funny comic book has its own charisma because of its cynical and dark nature. It’s about the hell and the afterlife of those hapless sinners who managed to end up there. The key character is sweet and clever, and you expect that he would outwit the demons somehow and enjoy his (after)life a little or even probably flee the hell entirely?… but every new page shows new humiliations and tortures he would inevitably get into (in a light and funny — for us — form, of course). The hell is your final destination, and this is the hell, not a joke, and demons are demons, although they may look dumb and fat morons. Your eternal torture is in its inevitability, and the more you try to escape it, the more it reminds you that you have nowhere to escape. If you manage to outmaneuver it somehow, you find yourself in an even more humiliating position, because this is the whole essence of the hell. All this is very thought-provoking )), although not in a depressing form.

The humor here is very different each time: sometimes it’s very simplistic, even stupid, but still very giggleable; sometimes it’s primitively mechanistic and repetitive; sometimes it’s quite absurd or even psychedelic; sometimes you don’t quite understand what is going on. However, most pages looked funny to me, and the whole concept of representing the hell through a collection of such mini-jokes seems quite inventive and original. Of course, there are various “political” jokes, because the hell is just part of our normal society, right? And the comics are pretty cynical about religion overall, I suppose (yeah, I especially liked the strip where sinners in the hell get the shit from toilets of the paradise). And some comic strips look like “the story of my life” (“Щось мляво вчишся ти на помилках”).

Anyway, the key charm of this comic book is in very sweet characters, especially the main ones, the dead monk Hieronymus and his accidental “death companion,” a wooden duck Bosch (whose position and facial expression on each page are very meaningful and amusing in their own way). Although you basically do not know anything about them except for their monotonous attempts to escape the hell and its tortures, you just LOVE them at the end of the book and want to keep “reading” about them )). However, even Satan and his fat moron demons start to look dear and cute to you from some point (which you cannot say about angels and God — but maybe it’s just because you don’t know them so well yet?).

I liked this unusual experience a lot!

A dark, funny romp through a very Boschian vision of Hell.
I highly recommend it, and if you look carefully on Amazon, you can get a signed copy from the author's store directly. I had originally planned to give this copy as a gift to someone, but I now I think I just might have to order another one for them. Gorgeously fun book that reminds me of the best issues of Bus...which can and should also be ordered from the author's Amazon bookstore.

Surreal and dark--like a Mad Magazine. Something like Spy vs Spy meets Dante's Inferno. Very clever, but nothing profound. It starts to wear thin, with no real resolution, but a nice addition to the Mighty Kirchner's oeuvre.

A few weeks ago I crawled out of a stupor where I had not read any comics for months (lifetimes) and all I wanted to do was read some Paul Kirchner comics. It seems like all his work these days is being put out by Tanibis, whose books make it to the US on a somewhat haphazard basis. By the time Hieronymus & Bosch came in the mail, I'd picked up some other Kirchner comics and forgotten I'd ordered this one, and only wondered who I knew that would be sending me mail from France.

Anyway, H&B is excellent. It reads a little like old Spy vs Spy or Don Martin cartoons from MAD, but Kirchner is more of a fine artist than a cartoonist -- that is, he's concerned with architecture and perspective and camera angles in a way those old comics really weren't, but the same Loony Toons-esque logic (an almost existential exploration of slapstick) still applies. And for as much as Hieronymus is one of his simpler, softer, toonier creations, the Hell Kirchner allows him to wander through is intricately mapped and surprisingly concrete.

There is something a little cold and gloomy about seeing all these comics in a hardcover package that doesn't really come across when you scan through them online, and I think that edge sharpens their wit. I've read through this several times now, and its sense of mood is spot-on. I don't know what brought me here after my mini-hiatus from funnybooks, but I'm glad it did.

While Hieronymus & Bosch is not quite as essential as Paul Kirchner's signature work (the bus) it's still a fun journey and a great example of the unique qualities of dialogue-free comics. Let's face it, they work better without those pesky speech balloons!

Each page-length episode presents another dilemma for ne'er-do-well Hieronymus and his toy wooden duck (name of Bosch) as they wander through a Hell that is less a roaring pit of flame than it is a landscape of endless existential futilities. Devils with pitchforks are always around to make sure that any ray of hope is denatured into another grim disappointment, but ultimately it's Hieronymus' inability to learn from his experiences that makes for the real torment.

My only real complaint is that the unique character of Bosch is under-utilized. A wheeled wooden duck pulled by a string is no ordinary protagonist, and I wish Kirchner had done more with Hieronymus' unusual sidekick. But other than that one quibble, Hieronymus & Bosch is still an enjoyable traipse through Kirchner's unique brand of metaphysical humor.

Не виправдав очікування, хоча всі складові були цікавими: незвичний сюжет про розбишаку Єроніма який потрапляє у пекло, відсутність тексту, розумієш зміст завдяки малюнкам. Проте як виявилось змісту як такого там і нема. Добре що придбала його з гарною знижкою, а то було б удвічі прикро. Виявилось, що комікс майже дитячий, з гумором типу "купа какуль впали на голову хаха". Проглянула та забула.
