Although I don't have a rock on my finger, my boyfriend and I are pretty set on ideas for our future wedding. Colors, flowers, my dress, photographer... we already have them picked out. We are also certain that we want to explore a "vintage" theme. Even though my wedding may not be in my immediate future, I was drawn to "Vintage Wedding: Simple Ideas for Creating a Romantic Vintage Wedding" by Daniela Turudich in hopes of some fresh, throwback ideas.

"Vintage Wedding" is divided into sections concerning, the bride, accessories, bridesmaids, the groom, color palettes, wedding locations, "odds and ends" , and an appendix of a small list of historic wedding venues. Although this sounds all-inclusive... it isn't. "Vintage Wedding" begins with a basic introduction on weddings (in general) plus vintage terminology. The text is so overly simplified, one can suspect that Turudich either thinks the reader is plain stupid or that she just hasn't done her own extensive research. The tone is bland and everything mentioned is content an average person with even a speck of wedding or vintage knowledge will know. This deters the reader from being pushed to read further.

If one does continue to read; don't expect a detailed, informative piece on putting together a "vintage" wedding. Much of the book consists of drawings or charts with captions versus any hard-hitting information. The photos consist mostly of random brides instead of information that a modern bride-to-be would find of any use. It almost appears that Turudich simply came across an old box of wedding photos in an attic and compiled them in "Vintage Wedding" and called it a day. All of these graphics are in black and white and look "old" which is obviously in order to mesh with the theme of the "Vintage Weddings". However, this fails in its aim and merely adds to the book's failure to provide proper information.

Despite the complaints, "Vintage Wedding" has a few (I stress: few)creative and strong moments such as diagrams on how to tie Windsor knots and bow ties, recipes for authentic period-piece cakes, era-correct food menus, and a list of venues (although this list aims to include all the 50 US states; it basically focuses on Los Angeles, CA as this is where the author is based). Sadly, these rare moments cannot carry the entire book and does not leave the reader with heavy or memorable information.

Overall, not much can be said about "Vintage Wedding". It is mostly a picture-book but less than a quality coffee table book. "Vintage Wedding" isn't even as helpful as an issue of a newsstand bridal magazine. Brides can skip this one.

This book is a great historical reference for period costumes and menus and it has some great period illustrations. But in the last 15 years, a lot more resources have become available for brides looking for vintage wedding inspiration, and I'm not sure this book cuts it. It also wasn't produced all that well. However it does have a lot of good information about the 1910s--a period that many books gloss over in their rush to reach the 1920s.

The fashions we interesting, but it was mostly stuff I already knew. Besides, half the fun of books like these is the sheer good-lookingness of them, and this book... was not that good-looking. It felt pretty slapdash. Its pages were also super-shiny and squeaked when you touched them, which is really irritating and not conducive to a good reading experience.

This book is very interesting for anybody who is interested in 1910's-1950's whether or not you are having a vintage style wedding.
It has everything from dress styles to swatches to cake and cocktail recipes.

A sure winner.

This book was okay. What I really want is a book that covers the 50s and 60s, but I haven't been able to find one.
