I loved this dark, dangerous world he developed. It makes you on edge when they go outside of the dome...into the Dark. There was no lack of exciting battles and escapes during this page turner. Definitely a must read.
I received a copy for an honest review.

Exquisitely well crafted epic. Storytelling that’s among the best in the genre.

Jericho’s a young member of The Sons, a fledgling tribe of Mecca. The holdout itself is domed and defended against the world outside, lying amidst vast wastelands of rusting metal, the remnants of an ancient and possibly Utopian society.

Found by Saul, the giant leader of his clan, at the furthest reaches of the desolate land, Jericho was different. The youngster was found in a cutting-edge suit believed to have been created by the ancient ones. And his unique mutagen, an overly sensitive inner voice, his intuition, gave him the foresight and instinct unseen in anyone else.

The holdout is governed by The Oracles who hold their god Horus as the most supreme of entities. They govern with fear, folding individuals into approved clans with similar mutagens, or casting them among the rabble. Their hold over Mecca is ultimate, enforced by the Guards. Once a year, they undertake the ‘Receiving’, a gift from Horus which arrives in a heavenly chariot. But, this year, the ‘Receiving’ has been altered and the believers are incensed. A cascading series of events causes internal strife. The blame is laid on all unbelievers, on unrecognized clans, on The Sons.

Grouping together, they must embark on a mission to save themselves, the downtrodden and abused. They must face Nightfall, the darkness from which none survive.

J.J. Coffelt’s written the first tale of an epic fantasy. He’s got the flair of J.R.R. Tolkien’s storytelling from The Lord of the Rings, the descriptive world-building from the dystopian action franchise Mad Max: Fury Road, and B.V. Larson’s exceptional character portrayal. Drawing cues from folklore and mythology, Coffelt provides a sense of familiarity to a distinctly unique novel.

I loved the buildup and the sustained action. This is a book I genuinely enjoyed reading. Itching to get my hands on the next installment in the series.

“Death awaits if you're caught outside during Nightfall. Humanity hides from the horrors of Night within the dome of Mecca, paralyzed by fear. Few dare to cross into the world beyond. This story catapults you into a world of dark mystery and chaos.”

This book was nothing that I was expecting. Though it was a bit more on the sci-fi side than I tend to like, I truly enjoyed reading this. It was this sci-fi edge that confused me in parts and made certain parts hard to follow. I found myself needing to read a few passages over once or twice to make sure I understood what exactly was going on. That being said I didn’t understand everything, but that made me want to keep reading even more. I wanted to find out what was happening, why it was happening.

Nightfall truly falls in line with all my YA favorites that it’s compared too, The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games. Though I didn’t immediately fall in love with Nightfall, I can’t wait to read the next book. I have so many questions that need to be answered before I can say I love this series. However, I am very much invested in this story and the characters.

The world of Nightfall that’s introduced is truly unique. I found myself captivated by the description of the land and forests and the city of Mecca. Even the beasts that roam outside the dome intrigued me. All these small details definitely made this an enjoyable read for me. I could completely imagine these harsh environments that the characters lived in and traveled through.

I expected this story to follow a single point of view based on the brief description. Following one of the main characters, Jericho. However, instead, I got to read various points of view from all sorts of characters even minor ones. This all made the story stronger helping me understand why the things were happening or what set them off. This was one thing I felt lacking in books like The Hunger Games, where you only get the main character’s point of view.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Nightfall. I don’t want to even try giving away any spoilers for this one. It would be too difficult for me to try and explain certain parts without just giving away the entire book. So I encourage anyone who not only enjoyed reading The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner but Divergent too. Try Nightfall, you won’t be disappointed.

Whether you love Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or both, Nightfall has plenty for you and more. It's a compelling blend of both genres with fantastic characters, setting, and a plot that will keep you on your toes. The blend of gauss rifles and folklore is fresh without feeling forced or confusing, and everything ties into the plot quite nicely. If you want action, this book has it; battles, escapes, and all manners of tense moments. I agree with a lot of the other reviewers who have compared some of the themes with LOTR or even some Mad Max. It's a wild ride.

There are a ton of mysteries, some resolved, plenty still left; the next books in this series will definitely be on my list so I can get more answers!

All in all, it's a great read, and you won't regret it.

This book pulls you in surprisingly quickly. A rapidly moving adventure, unpredictable, with danger around every corner. I’m impressed with how engulfed I became in the story and how upset I was when I came to the end that there was no sequel! Will definitely be looking for further works by Coffelt.
