This one was a little hard for me to rate in the end....I think the way this was written using letters was really cool and I haven't seen this in a middle grade before. Also reading this from an adult's perspective was quite funny, especially with the rules and secrets the kids think they have that their parents surely couldn't know about.

However, some of this was a little annoying - in particular the ew girls are gross parts. Meeting the danger gang was so fun and interesting some of the plot line was pretty cool too, there is of course a lot of toilet humor in this one but it wasn't too bad.

The final chapter/letter seemed a bit silly....because the person who the letter was going to was there so I didn't understand why the main character was writing it to them. If you look past some of the mistakes an uninspiring plot points it's good fun!

I must say though the illustrations were so AWESOME! As an adult this is super fast read with nice little moments (McFly that really old band made an appearance too) for a younger reader I am sure this is amazing!

Read this with my 7-year-old son. We loved it. A mixture of adventure, supernatural, and friendship.

Great book for children to read.

Green stinky storms, a weird town, superpowers?, friendship, and more! A delightful and hilarious book!

NOTE: I read this book in Dutch. I have no clue what the English names for everything is, so I am going to be using the Dutch names.

Meet Frenkie, he just moved to the little town of Bizar (though I guess if one moves from Grijsdorp it is an improvement) and misses his dear friend Dani a lot. We see how he tries to make the best of things and writes letters to his friend Dani. And then a big green poopy stinky storm happens and things get very weird and very bizarre. The story gets more and more magical and silly with each new month and I just LOVE LOVE LOVED it. It may have come over a bit episodic, but I think it wouldn’t have worked in another way given this book takes place over a year. It would just be too big or you would lose tons of story.

I had so much fun finding out what was going on with that storm and what it meant for each character. I won’t spoil anyone’s superpowers you will just have to read this fun book to find out, but I have to say if I had to rank the superpowers I would do it this way:

Mollie
Erik (though a bit inconvenient, but still awesome)
Frenkie
I also loved seeing what happened to the town and that the storm didn’t just affect the children. It affected a lot more!

Then there are shadows lurking and stalking, inventions being made, there are secrets (and one I definitely didn’t see coming about a certain character who I wasn’t a fan of because of their responsibilities that they didn’t seem to take). The club has a lot of things to figure out and I loved seeing them get together and do things. I am so happy that Frenkie found friends so fast and that he has so much fun in his new town.

I loved that this book was all in letters (almost one for each month). I loved seeing what happened in Bizar every month and what happened to each of Frenkie’s new friends or what happened in the town. As the storm really made things even weirder. Even spookier. Even stinkier. Even greener. I loved seeing the little hints that he was interested in more than just being friends though also quickly missing it as soon as he did, which is adorable and also so fitting for his age. I do wonder how Dani reacted to all the crazy and weird stories that Frenkie told her. I can only imagine. 😛 However, it just didn’t seem sense to do the last chapter in which everything exciting happens and we finally meet Dani. It just seems weird that he is writing her this letter WHEN SHE WAS THERE. I get you don’t want to break the format, but I do feel it would have been better. Now it just felt odd and weird.

The art was fabulous though I did think it was a bit odd how much they differ. You had SUPER detailed and gorgeous art, and more simple but also fun art. Between the two sometimes the characters just looked vastly different which was confusing. I still loved the art, don’t get me wrong, but I think it would be better if it had all been in one style.

I wasn’t a fan of the teacher though. How she handled the class, that math stuff and forcing people to do maths until they gets something right, there is the Valentines Day thing. Lord woman, be a better teacher.

I did think it was a bit odd to go for branie instead of danger in the Dutch edition. I mean branie is a good choice in the end, but it seems weird to go from danger to daring/brave.

The ending made me quite happy. Thanks to the author for adding this epilogue.

Tom Fletcher did it again! A fun, exciting, storm-tastic, superpowers and friendship filled story. I flew through it!

This book was interesting and creative, with an array of different powers and objects. It all starts when Franky Brown moves to the town of Freaky, and there is a smelly storm and the kids in the town of Freaky get all of these cool abilities and things!!!

I thoroughly recommend and enjoyed this novel because of its humour and adventure.
Tom Fletcher has really outdone himself this time with this awesome book so, even though it isn't one of my favourites, I would recommend it.

Funny, plenty of toilet humour, sly references to McFly that made me giggle - all in all a great middle grade book. Shane Devries illustrations are perfect too and very amusing.

I read this to my kids and really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the writing style, with Frankie writing letters to his best friend Dani after moving house. This gave Frankie a really strong voice, and didn't fall apart too much at the finale (though it did a bit. That does tend to happen with epistolary novels).

Frankie is such a well rounded character that he carries this book. The side characters are interesting, though none of them compare to Frankie.

The plot was interesting, though this is what drops it from 5 stars to 4. There were a lot of interesting things happening, but the connective tissue into one narrative was quite weak. It felt like a collection of short stories more than one full length story. The finale did bring it all back together and tied everything up well.

The art and illustrations were fantastic and brought so much character to the book.

Also, this needs songs from Tom Fletcher. After Christmasaurus and Space Band and (the best) The Creakers, we need songs about The Danger Gang

This book was such a fun and unique read! I loved the way the story is told through letters — it made the whole thing feel really fresh and personal.

I read this as a bedtime story for my son, who is a little older than the target age, but we both really enjoyed it. It’s light-hearted, full of silly moments, and honestly much better than many other books we’ve read together at bedtime. The plot is fast-paced with plenty of humor (yes, even some toilet humor — which kids will definitely love!).

The last letter felt a little odd to me — it didn’t completely make sense why the character was writing to someone who was already there — but it didn’t take away from the fun.

And the illustrations? Absolutely brilliant! They really bring the characters and action to life, adding extra energy and humour to the story. A super quick, cheerful read with lots of laugh-out-loud moments — perfect for kids, and surprisingly fun for adults too.

A fun, gross story about 8 kids who develop strange abilities (well, in one case, a pet does...) after a mysterious (and smelly) storm in the wonderfully named town of Freaky. What I really liked is that much of the book is about the kids’ developing powers (which they kind of discover by accident) and their their growing friendship. Reminded me of the Goonies (8 kids/kids on bikes) and Round the Twist (the gross bits). Would love to see more books in this series, and have ordered ‘The Creakers’ by Tom Fletcher which looks lots of fun too.

After moving house and area, Franky struggles to fit in with a new school. He communicates with his friend from his past school, Dani by letter - and this is the basis of the book. We basically follow Franky writing his letters to Dani, every month - and how he gets on settling into a new school, and dealing with family (including a baby brother).
Obviously I am not the target age group for this book. I bought it purely for the author (Tom from McFly). But I can appreciate the elements, and this would be 100% something I probably would read back in Year 4/5.

Great fun following Franky as he moves house to a town called ‘Freaky’, makes a great set of friends, and together they form the awesome Danger Gang.

The story is a set of letters he sends to his best friend on how he’s getting on and updating her on all the crazy things they get up to.

It’s a really fun story, with lots of adventures, superpowers, secret agents and stinky nappies! I read a chapter each night to my 10 and 7 yr olds and they couldn’t wait to get the next instalment!

Great for kids!

So, it’s not my usual style of book and the number of stars is not wholly determined by me. After a few HP books in a row, we fancied a change at bedtime and this was recommended by my nephew. Both my children enjoyed this being read to them (him-7 and her- 4) and it was an easy book to read to them. There was adventure, magic, humour that actually made them giggle out loud and this all lead to them asking for more pages most nights. Recommended for an entertaining family read.

Another awesome book from Tom, I think this was my favourite so far as it was written differently to the other stories he's done, I loved all the science fiction in there and the little easter eggs to do with McFly and McBusted! I couldn't put this down and think kids will be engrossed in this amazing story about the danger gang!

Read this book with my 1st daughter and now reading it with my 2nd. They absolutely love Tom Fletcher's books. They get so engrossed in the story. I have found that they look forward to reading time in the evenings, which is so nice to see. I highly recommend this book, suitable from about 7-8yrs of age 😊

We've discovered that 7-yo isn't a huge fan of spooky stories at bedtime, so he was a little reluctant to try this. Turns out, this story is a whole lot less spooky than it first appears, and he actually really enjoyed it.

The structure of the book reminded me a bit of a mini-superheroes version of the Magic Faraway Tree (in that every chapter is a self-contained adventure featuring fun magical hijinks with a big cast of characters) and Franky's voice in his letters is really well done.

Fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid will feel right at home here, though IMHO Wimpy Kid's humour is slightly more layered. The art was gorgeous and all the kids in the danger gang were lovable and well-developed - I'd happily read a sequel.

Despite his obvious reluctance to enjoy the story, our 7-yo had a field day with this. There were several laugh-out-loud moments and he especially loved Franky's baby brother. He also picked up on the subtext between Franky and Dani (though he didn't find it as entertaining as his mom did) and we also had a good conversation about self-confidence and bullying as a result of this book.

5/5 from me and a 4/5 from our 7-yo, who docked a vengeful star for the spooky bits.
