If you like pulsating page-turners, larger than life characters, and crazy twists and turns, you’ll love Blair Denholm’s high-powered sucker punch.
BLAIR DENHOLM is a born-and-bred Australian crime fiction writer whose previous jobs have been as varied as translator, debt collector, technology researcher, banking and insurance consultant, and even car-wash attendant. Over the years he has lived and worked in New York, Moscow, Munich, Abu Dhabi and Australia. His life-long love of sports is reflected in the plots of the Fighting Detective series.
Denholm's flagship series, The Fighting Detective, stars ex-boxer Detective Sergeant Jack Lisbon and is set in the steamy tropics of North Queensland, Australia. The series features heavy doses of noir crime with a vigilante justice twist. So far there are eight novels and two prequel novellas in the series, with more in the pipeline.
In 2026, Denholm will independently release a spin-off series featuring Jack's daughter as a private investigator working cases out of Brisbane. Skye Lisbon Investigates promises to be a series with wide appeal.
Denholm's debut novel, SOLD, is the first in a noir trilogy featuring the detestable yet lovable one-man wrecking ball Gary Braswell. The book was long-listed for movie adaptation by Screen Queensland in 2019. The other books in this series are Sold to the Devil and Sold Dirt Cheap.
Denholm has also written two thriller novels set in Russia. Captain Viktor Voloshin is a hard-boiled investigator who has to fight the establishment in order for justice to be served in his own special way. The first in this series, Revolution Day, was published in 2021, with the follow-up, The Defector, released in 2024. One more book will round off this series.
In 2024, Denholm signed on with UK-based publisher Vinci Books.
Blair Denholm grew up in suburban Brisbane, Queensland. After two lengthy stints in Tasmania, he now resides in the Southern Downs region of Queensland with his partner, Sandra, and faithful dog, Bruno.
Gary Braswell returns... as Dylan Wagner! Fresh on the lam from the Australian Feds for a crime he never committed. But this loveable loser (who kind’a reminds me of a past boss of mine) has more coming.
You see, he has a new name and a new face... if you can call it that. And he’s up to his hair follicles in more trouble as he deals with a shady businessman, a dodgy Hobart detective, and the Tassie underworld.
Blair Denholm has created a sequel to Sold that’s even better. Great characters who you will love to hate, or hate to love. Plus it’s filled with a crazy interaction with a Tassie Devil... And the twist near the end blew my eyeballs out.
Do yourself a favour. Grab “Sold... To The Devil” and read it.
Sold was easily one of the best books I read last year, so after joining Denholm's mailing list, I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy for review. Gary Braswell (err, Dylan) finds himself on the run after the chaos that ensued in the previous novel. If you thought those adventures were wild, found yourself pondering over the combusting birds, or just can't get enough of Gary's blunder's, you won't be disappointed. Personally, I'm hoping this'll turn into a trilogy (or more).
Read for: More crime, more noir, more psychedelic animals.
Sold to the Devil The best that can be said for our main character ( Gary aka Dylan) is that he is the embodiment of Murphy's Law. This book takes you to Tasmania where Gary goes to hide out. Gary goes on a roller coaster of a ride trying to hide out now that he is #1 on the Most Wanted list. Gary just can not catch a break and the final twist is really great. This is a fun read but not a thriller. I do have to say that I enjoyed reading it. Read Sold book 1 so that you will understand more of Sold to the Devil.
The further adventure of the audacious Gary Braswell!
Australian author Blair Denholm lives in Tasmania at present but has lived and worked in New York, Moscow, Munich, Abu Dhabi in addition to Australia. He has published three books – ESCAPE FROM PASSING WINDS, SOLD, and now SOLD TO THE DEVIL. Blair is also a translator, speaks fluent Russian (he interpreted for the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow and translated for the Sochi Winter Olympics Organizing Committee) as well as a traveler and has escaped situations and detainments in life much as he writes in his new book! SOLD TO THE DEVIL is the second installment in his Aussie comic-Noir trilogy he calls GAME CHANGER series, featuring the hapless and incorrigible anti-hero, Gary Braswell.
Blair Denholm is establishing himself as a very bright star on the literary landscape. His language and tone for relaying his tale of crime and corruption and drug abuse and sexuality is at once raw and lyrical. On every page of this book there are both gasps of fright and guffaws of laughter as we follow one the more interesting if oddball characters who seems to be headed to become a globally appreciated anti-hero. Example – On a ferry boat, during a stormy Bass Strait crossing, ‘It was hard to sit straight, let alone walk around. Gary braced himself with one hand on the edge of the bed. Like a kid with a new toy, he kept glancing at the ID documents strewn across the blanket. The ‘Spirit of Tasmania,’ his own Noah’s Ark to a new life, wasn’t cooperating. The vessel rocked like an out-of-control amusement park ride, and he had no hope of reading the dancing words on the documents.’
The intriguing plot is condensed in the fine synopsis: ‘He stirs up trouble just by rolling into town. Can this human wrecking ball on the run dodge the Federal police and a Russian crime syndicate bent on revenge? Gary Braswell is a walking disaster. Dodging his violent enemies with new papers and the help of a surgeon’s knife, Gary attempts to lie low with a stint in freezing Tasmania. But he’s barely settled in with his stolen $150,000 stash when a bodybuilding thief snatches the cash… and then turns up bloodily dismembered. When Gary is fingered for the killing, he’s terrified he’ll blow his highly illegal history wide open. And since Australia’s most-wanted man is desperate to avoid a stretch in the slammer, this true-blue criminal better knuckle down quickly before he gets nailed. Will the knockabout’
Aside from being solid entertainment, SOLD TO THE DEVIL has some philosophical asides that focus on many of our current obsessions. Blair keeps us guessing (as reading detectives) while he places the spotlight on the Aussie jester Gary Braswell. This is a [heck] of a fine book – and continues a solid trilogy!
Great Story. I loved the first book in this series called ‘Sold’ and I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well. Blair Denholm has put together a highly entertaining and interesting plot, that had me glued to the pages for hours. Gary Braswell is an outstanding character. He has a knack for getting himself into all sorts of trouble, and it’s very entertaining seeing him try to get out of it. Gary Braswell and his girlfriend Tracey Southern found out rather quickly that the weather in Tasmania was nothing like New South Wales or the Gold Coast, with the biting cold winds. They both had to take on new identities after the Federal Police had offered a large reward for Gary’s arrest. The Fed’s were keen to catch up with Gary as they believed he had killed a Cop and a Russian man, most likely from the Russian Mafia. Gary might have had plastic surgery, but he would still have to trust others around him to keep him safe, and for some reason he seemed confident that Tracey, an ex-Sydney prostitute addicted to heroin could help him. This is a memorable book and certainly well worth reading. 5/5 Star Rating.

Blair Denholm gives us an action-packed and all around fun thriller in Sold to the Devil! Gary Braswell is trying to run from his violent past only to discover that violence is the only way forward. This gritty beat-em-up is just fun, Gary is a great main character, and Denholm packs in the perfect balance of humor and action to make this one a devil of a time! Check out Sold to the Devil if you like classics like Jack Reacher or John Wick!
Gary and Tracy are on the run in Tasmania. Gary has had cheap plastic surgery that messed up his ears. They meet three people Ed, Selina and Fern who they party with. Gary ends up being raped by the guy and the money stolen. Gary vows to get even and get his money back. There is a vicious murder and Gary becomes imprisoned. What happens in between is intriguing!
Another page turner. It was humorous to see all the main players scramble like rats when the lights are turned on, to clean up the DNA they wanted undetected. Lol. Gary never learns much to his detriment. I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or be outraged at some of the actions of these characters. I can't wait to see how this continues to the end.
Mayhem and murder follow on from book one "Sold". On the run our character ends up in Tasmania. His self inflated sense of self importance sees him roll from one disastrous choice to another made worse by his Tasmanian Devil alter ego. Another well written story....to be continued.
A really enjoyable sequel to Sold. I enjoyed this one from the start, and while it might work as a stand alone, I think some of the references might get lost if you hadn't read the first one...so treat yourself and read both! I'm not moving onto book 3 to see if Gary manages to get out of his latest predicament.
Only read a few pages and cannot recommend this book.add A
I was looking forward to reading an exciting story based on Australia. But the persistent crude language I find totally off-putting but you might enjoy that. Sad!
Good interesting storyline ,written as per characters and how they would react and behave and in the Language they would speak. I enjoyed it greatly and recommend it highly
