If you've never experienced this unique, cute sci-fi romance about what it means to be human, now's your chance! One of the biggest hits from CLAMP, creators of xxxHOLiC and Magic Knight Rayearth, returns in a definitive, hardcover premium collector's edition, featuring a large size, premium paper, color pages, and more.
After moving from the countryside into the big city, poor college student Hideki Motosuwa finds himself down on his luck. All he wants is a good job, a girlfriend, and his very own "persocom" - the latest and greatest in humanoid computer technology. Hideki's luck changes one night when he finds Chi - an adorable, but seemingly broken, persocom thrown out in a pile of trash. After taking her home, Hideki discovers that Chi is more responsibility than he expected - and that there's much more to his cute new persocom than meets the eye.
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

I truly don't know what to make of this volume. It makes you think about a lot of deep things but at the same time I get annoyed by the world building.
There is a mystery aspect to the story but I really dislike mysteries so I just get annoyed with all of the 'hints'.
Plus there is some deep rooted sexism throughout the story. Even at times where it is light-hearted. Sometimes I think it is done intentionally but other times it feels like CLAMP wasn't aware of their own views on women.
I think what bothers me the most is none of the women nor PersoComs are annoyed at stuff. Or just plain irritating. It is always shown like it is cute or something that enhances their desirability. So if you're plain or ugly in this world you are just out of luck?
I am feeling disturbed by this story and this is despite me knowing I hated the ending in the past. I am actually not really looking forward to volume 3 and 4.
Oh and the power imbalances in the (potential) relationships... No.
Oh I just want Chii to be happy :( she's just so adorable when she worked at the cafe and wanted to buy gifts for Hideki after getting her pay. It's sweet when the cafe manager (man is cute, I need more of him ♡) taught Chii not to tackle-hug simply anyone, causing her to ask Hideki if she can hug him the next time she saw him at their home. But the cafe manager's backstory was rather sad too, no wonder he often looked sad even when he smiles constantly.
I wonder what the landlady's role in all these and what the two people in black wanted to find Chii for. I hate the fact that Chii was taken away but some sleazy guy in the end of this volume, but I like that she met Kotoko! Kotoko's personality was so different compared to the bubbly Sumomo, but she seemed pretty intriguing. I do hope she'll end up aiding Chii to escape or help her learn something about herself. I need Chii, Sumomo and Kotoko to be a gang ♡♡
Since Chi is capable of learning I do think it’s understandable for people to get more emotionally attached to her than other persocoms. However, at the end of the day she’s still a machine and you can just delete her bad memories and anything else. I really like that Hideki is questioning why he has strong emotions towards Chi and why persocoms look like humans in the first place. It definitely brings up interesting themes. His relationship Yumi really helps to highlight the differences of emotions between humans and robots. I hope Hideki ends up being “the one” for Chi but not in a romantic way, more in a paternal way.

Ueda (bakery guy) hires Chi and reveals a tear jerker that he was once married to a persocom, and how she had saved his life.
Chi gets kidnapped! (By Dragonfly,) an irate collector, but she is kept company by Kotoko, a laptop persocom.
A City With No People is very clearly written about persocoms, Hideki, and Chi. (Later revealed to be the land lady)
Zima and Dita are after Chi but there may be more to them than we think.
Minoru’s persocom, Yuzuki (once modeled after his sister) is displaying a personal touch to her actions, prompting him to scrap the idea of making her constantly like his sister.

This one goes deeper into what makes us human. What's the difference between us and basically a andriod, and if they can remember and learn from us, how is that different just because we have a heart, and they don't. Even further we have a storyline at the end that connects losing our memory and how they would lose theirs since their parts expire.
It's a deeper, maybe even darker, volume this time. I really enjoyed that factor though it was a bit slower and slice of life style than the funnier volume 1. But overall I did enjoy it a lot still and going to for sure read volume 3.
This book delves much more into the philosophical aspects of what makes us human than the first volume. Where there seemed to be elements of a sort of college sex comedy in the first selection, this gets much more into the questions that are posed when humans attempt to create things that mirror consciousness. At what point do their thoughts go beyond mere programming? Can they feel? Definitely looking forward to where it goes from here.
I like this more than the first two volumes. This starts to really touch on the concept of what makes something human and on how loneliness impacts people. Yumi-chan and the Manager are the most interesting characters for me so far (I’m predicting now that Yumi loved Manager). Being an orphan and alone is a very conducive situation to falling for your humanoid computer lol.
This is the omnibus 2, I think this is the final book that has any heavy fanservice since after that they lead more towards the plot which gets serious. I like the progression of things of how it goes from more light hearted to a mystery with still romance.
More fun and hijinks for Hideki & Chi. While Hideki still tries to figure out the how & why Chi works without an OS, Chi continues to surprise all by learning. This is still a great story 20 plus years later. I really like that the picture books in the story help Chi to learn & grow.
Instead of humans creating robots and abusing them, humans create robots and fall in love with them. Then they completely abandon all people and live in bliss with their smokeshow of a supercomputer. It's a nice change up of the normal sifi genre.
Nothing really happened in this book; no real progress was made anywhere in terms of the plot. However, I am still invested enough to want to continue the series. Lol why do mangas do this?
Hideki sets up Chi with a spot at his old job where he used to help sell cakes and other baked goods. This is much better than the sketchy job she had before in volume one. The mysterious person who sent the photo of what looked to be Chi sends another photo, and this time there’s another person in the photo, someone Hideki recognizes. If that isn't creepy enough, three more volumes of the picture book series Chi likes is published, and the books seem to be revealing more and more about Chi’s life and purpose. Hideki tries to figure out just what the books are trying to tell him about Chi, but he doesn't figure it out in time before something terrible happens to Chi and he must enlist the help of his friend Minoru to save her.
While there are still comedic moments in this volume, there are a lot more serious moments as the plot thickens about Chi's specialness, but we really don't get a whole lot of answers in this volume, just more questions. The series also starts to get into some of its quintessential questions about life with robots, why robots were made in the image of humans, and how humans treat these robots in comparison to other humans. There are quite a few moments of sexy fan-service with Chi in her underwear, a few shots of her topless. Since some of this series relates to how attractive humans find the robots, the moments do make a little sense in the context of the storyline.

I can't seem to find anything more to say than what I said in the review for the first volume. I adore Chi and all of the characters. Well, except for one near the end. And there was one in the first one too, but they're not meant to be liked. I have all four volumes now, so I will be reading back to back until I get to the end, most likely.
Loved it and loved chi! She’s such a cute character - always wanting to help and learn. I also love plum the mini computer and how she is always ready to go (even tho she’s programmed to do that) Plum reminds me of one of my dogs lol. Can’t wait to read the next one.
