His love for her is the key to his happiness.

Arthur Davenport has it all: looks, money, and a successful future planned by his parents. He knows that something is missing, but when he and Josie, his mother's maid, develop a friendship that can only be based on Christian values, he realizes that his love for her is the key to his happiness. Can he convince her that he would gladly give up his life of luxury for a life of service with her?

Newport, Rhode Island in the last decades of the nineteenth century was a stunningly beautiful and glamorous playground for the rich during the summer months, and a perfect setting for a romance between a rich young man from New York City and a local girl who works for his family. The two couldn't possibly expect to have anything in common, as he is expected to follow his father in a financial career and she is merely a maid with a mother who takes care of local children while their parents work. Arthur Davenport, spoiled and bored, unsure of his place in his family and in the eyes of God, truly meets his match in Josie Warren, who is often just a bit hard on herself for not being the perfect Christian in thought as well as deed. The two meet on the famous Cliff Walk, and neither of them can imagine where or how their instant attraction will take them as he struggles to makes his parents understand that his calling is the same as hers, to help those less fortunate. He has no money of his own, and if they disinherit him out of disapproval, how can he help Josie, who has spent her life working hard to help support herself and her mother? More importantly, how can he convince her that he would gladly give up his life of luxury just to be with her?

Throne of Grace is one of the only Christian romance novels I have read. I saw it was free on Amazon, and I decided I might as well pick up a different type of book.

The book is sweet and simple, if I'm putting it lightly. The historical aspect made it seem so much sweeter than I expected it to be, and to be honest I didn't mind the religion aspect of it. I didn't find it to be "in your face", which was a pleasant surprise.

I found the relationship to build up a little quickly, but that is more of a personal comment. Reading other reviews, I've found most people haven't mind this aspect (since I haven't read many Christian romance books, I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but it worked). I also enjoyed the drama and other relationships within this book. It was unique and made the story much more than just a "romance" book. If anything, my only request would be to make the book move faster, but the relationship a little slower.

Overall, this book was a nice, clean book.

Three out of five stars.

I enjoyed listening to this sweet tale of two people from different social classes, back in a time and place where your social standing clearly defined how you were treated and what opportunities you had.

This story took place in Newport, Rhode Island, which is a location that I have visited twice in my life and toured the grand “cottages” of the wealthy. These summer home “cottages” were in actuality grand mansions for the upper crust of society.

I liked the two main characters, Arthur and Josie, as well as the side characters of Josie’s mother and the local doctor. All four of these people valued following God’s leading for their lives.

This was a sweet novel, which was enjoyable to listen to. The narrator did not do separate voices for each of the characters, yet that was not a drawback at all. She had such a lovely voice, it was as if I was sitting in a room, listening to someone read to me. I definitely liked listening to it and would recommend it to those who enjoy clean, Christian historical novels.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

“I won't ask for the moon just yet, but that doesn't mean I don't hope for it.”

I love historical romances, christian not so much. But this one, this one really undid me. I loved every single word of it.
Cecily's writing is realistic and I could easily sympathize with the main characters.

She is a master at storytelling!

I received this book from the author for my honest review through the Christians Only Review Group.

This is a beautiful Christian historical romance with so much more substance throughout the book. I loved it! I cannot wait to start the next book in the series. I will be starting it soon. It was also gifted to me from the author for my honest review. But back to Throne of Grace, it kept my interest all through. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The romance between Arthur and Josie was so sweet. I loved the extra twist of her mother finding happiness as well. And also, all the fuss between Arthur and his parents, because it was how the times were at that time between different statuses of people. And though we still have some of that still lingering in our time, because it will never completely be gone, I’m glad, all in all, it’s behind us. No more trying to marry your children off to someone of wealthy status and there’s no love between them. I know in some other countries this still happens, but I’m speaking of the US. Once again, though, beautiful, sweet, and elegant book. Clean, no vulgar language.

I love historical romances and, although I do not read book with religious influences, I must say that Throne of Grace did not disappoint. Set in 1893, we meet Josie, a young woman who works for the Davenport household. She is very Christian and is always guided by the word of God. When she meets Arthur, she falls in love with the man and his ideals.
Arthur Davenport returns home from Europe and upon meeting Josie, he immediately feels attracted to her. As usual, a rich son needs to follow the footsteps of his father and whom he decrees is right for marriage. Arthur, wants nothing to do with the family business, nor does he want anything to do with Catherine Harland who his family want to marry him to. He has set his eyes on the pretty Josie and wants to follow his heart.
Although the Christian aspect is the main core of the book, the setting is perfect for a romance filled with characters that portray real and raw emotions and a sweet story full of heart.

When I read the description of author Cecily Wolfe’s book “Throne of Grace” it sparked my interest from the beginning as I’m a romantic at heart and I love watching and reading about historical romances. I wasn’t disappointed! This is definitely a story that presents the grace of God. There is so much Godly instruction and wisdom immersed throughout this book. Our main character’s Arthur and Josie are socially and economically worlds apart and would not have intermingled or developed a friendship under normal circumstances. Author Davenport is from an extremely wealthy and respected family, whereas Josie is the Davenport’s house maid and at an economical disadvantage.
Arthur has found a new found freedom in Christ and no longer desires to live for wealth and himself. Although this change is good- he finds himself feeling disconnected and no longer interested in things that once made him happy. He realizes his life was self absorbed and he desires to use the privilege allotted to him to help the unfortunate. His desire to help goes beyond charitable contributions. Instead, he no longer has interest in the lucrative family business and desires to work hands-on in a non profitable community based outreach. This decision and passion ostracizes him from those in his circle.

He finds himself attracted to and drawn to Josie’s faith in God, although his pursuit of her is not in the favor of his parents and circle of friends. Will Arthur and Josie’s love stand the test of time? This historical romance teaches the lesson that we are valuable in the eyes of God regardless of how society or others may view us. Sometimes opposites do attract as was the case for Arthur and Josie for a purpose only God could have set in motion. God does work in mysterious ways as you’ll experience in this book filled with twist and turns, courage, faith and love. I especially love that at the conclusion of the story the author shares what she believes to be modern love songs that describe the love experienced between Arthur and Josie.

I listened to all 4 but liked these two the best:

Just the Way You Are (Billy Joel) Make You Feel My Love (Adele’s version)

Cecily’s book will add to your faith and encourage you to trust God to write your love story. Although fiction this book provided wisdom that I can apply to my daily life. I give it 5 stars, and recommend this fine read; I can’t wait to continue the journey with Arthur and Josie in book 2 “Crown of Beauty.”

Throne Of Grace by Cecily Wolfe is a marvellous Christian historical romance. It is the first book in the Cliff Walk Courtships series and I absolutely loved it.
Set in 1893 the world is changing. People are still obsessed with class. Each class makes judgments and has prejudices against the other classes but we should never judge. The state of our heart is more important than the state of our clothes.
Fortunately God looks at our heart. He has love for everyone. No one is more or less worthy. "She never felt she was less in the eyes of God because she had so little."
Some characters are "obsessed with appearances and money." Money brings choice but was never meant to sit on a throne.
It is the beginning of the age of philanthropy. People are starting to notice the plight of others. "I know I can make a difference in their lives." They open their hearts and eyes to the suffering and want to take action.
Unlikely partnerships spring up in the novel. God is always willing to use the hands and feet of His people to help others.
God is just a prayer away. "There is great power in prayer." Whenever we pray, we must pray expecting answers because God hears us.
Life throws up worries and concerns. The best we can do is bring them to God. "She gave up control of her thoughts and worries to God." God always has a plan for our lives and we would be wise to follow it.
Cecily Wolfe is a new author to me. I loved her style and her warm, welcoming characters who were realistically drawn. The novel not only has a great plot line but reveals the hand and heart of God.
I will leave you with my favourite phrase:
"We aim not to judge but to serve."
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

4.5 Stars! A sweet romance!

This is my first ever historical Christian Romance. I was worried at first as I wasn't sure that I would get into it. So, I took some time and decided to read the first fifty pages in one sitting. It was worth it!

Something that I wasn't sure that I would like, evoked emotions of innocent times, sweetness, arranged marriages and school! I remembered reading Austen and Bronte at school in English Literature! Those were probably the authors that pushed my love for literature at that time.

So, this is a sweet, non-sexual love story that I usually wouldn't pick up but am glad that I did.

The story is simple, the man comes home from abroad, his parents want him to marry their perfect choice, but he follows his heart!

Sweet Christian romance. I am not generally a huge fan of historical novels, but this one was just right for my mood at the moment. I appreciated the accuracy with class struggles and the realistic struggles that Arthur and Josie endure while trying to pursue a love relationship that isn't acceptable to some people.
The themes of God's love and acceptance and pursuing God's best are evident throughout this book. It's a meaningful story with characters that readers will warm to and root for their relationship success.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

The story, set in 1893, dealt with the differences between the classes in those days. This is an interesting topic for me and the Author addressed the subject matter with clarity and efficiency throughout the novel.

All the characters were completely believable and both Arthur and Josey, the main characters, were completely lovable. I connected with them emotionally and routed for them as they faced opposition to their future together.

I have awarded 5 stars to reflect the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. It is classic Christian Fiction.

Very good read.

Since watching Downton Abbey I have been fascinated with the class distinctions of the late 1800's and the integration of the two. This is a sweet story of an uppercrust young man and a servant class young lady both intent on serving God and finding His will for their lives.

Throne of Grace, by Cecily Wolfe, is a Christian historical romance that will appeal to fans of Downton Abbey and Pride & Prejudice. Set in New England in the late 19th century, it is the story of Josie, a maid - and Arthur, the son of her rich employer. An upstairs/downstairs romance, it explores the social mores and prejudices of the time while also highlighting the character’s strong Christian beliefs.

A clean read with lovely language, it is the kind of story that you can relax and read slowly as Josie and Arthur’s relationship develops. Of course, there are challenges they must face - the prime one being: If Arthur’s family shuns him due to his love for Josie, how will he support her and her widowed mother? Yet, even with this tension, a novel with such a beautiful title must come to an equally beautiful, yet still realistic end - and readers who love a happy ending will not be disappointed.

Included after the novel’s epilogue is a short list of popular songs that Wolfe believes exemplify her character’s love. It’s a nice touch that may lead readers to enjoy music along with this romantic story, and those who want to continue following Josie & Arthur’s story will also note that there is a sequel: Crown of Beauty.

Throne of Grace focuses on the romance between two young people of very different backgrounds. Josie is a kind girl who was raised in a coastal town on a tiny island, she's young and idealistic, and very strong in her faith.

Arthur has lived a privileged life as a wealthy son of a successful business man, he only visits Josie's town when his parents come to stay at their summer house. Recently, Author's trip to Europe has opened his eyes to the world around him. He has experienced a complete shift in his mindset and regard toward people that are less fortunate.

Both want to make a difference, both are learning to walk in faith. The stage is set for a couple that is meant to be, but will they be able to handle the pressure when prejudice and gossip threaten to hurt their friendship.

A sweet romantic story about how God can bring the right people together in order to do his will, but also test them with trials in order to strengthen their faith.

Sweet godly romance

The rift between classes is very prominent in this. book, as is faith that GOD handles the lives of tnose who have placed Him first in their lives. Ignoring class distinction is not that easy to do, whether one is on the high side of society or in the working class, as is shown over and over in Ms Wolfe's writing. Thankfully, in this case, love does c
onquer all, with a nice surprise at the end.

I got tnis book in a mass giveaway. Thanks for a very good read.

I thought that Throne of Grace was a very well done book. I've read many Christian novels, and I would never have guessed that this one was self published. It could easily stand among traditionally published books in terms of plot line, dialogue realism, and professionalism of the writing. Although I wasn't necessarily searching with a fine tooth comb, I found no errors in the print (something that I feel is a major deal breaker when it comes to reading self published works and even some traditionally published ones...), and the formatting was also well done and functional.

The story was an encouraging tale about how God can work through all circumstances to care for His children. In some ways, it was remeniscent of a Christian version of the well loved fairy tale of Cinderella. It was a warm story with a firm happily-ever-after (although I am intrigued as to how that may change in the sequel...)

So saying, my only critique of the book is that I felt like everything happened a little too smoothly. What little conflict did arise was quickly and easily solved, usually through Arthur's influence and wealth. While that's not necessarily an issue for me, I do like to see the characters struggle a bit for their win. And while God does eventually turn everything into good, I feel like having perfect solution to every problem that arises and a neatly packaged happy ending gives a rosey, yet somewhat unrealistic, portrayal of how this couple's life would turn out.

However, it was a warm and enjoyable book. It was professionally done and showed me that there is a chance for self-published authors to have a clean, well written story.

It's an excellent story to curl up by a fireplace with a cup of cocoa on a cold November night such as this one.

What I enjoyed most about Throne of Grace was its unashamed faith. Sometimes in writing Christian characters or Christian themes, an author will pull back trying to avoid being overt. Ms. Wolfe pulls no punches in that regard and it really works. The story really hinges on the main characters being believably devoted to God as the linchpin of the whole story. The two protagonists, Josie and Arthur, are first drawn to one another because of their mutual faith. It is through this commonality that they are able to see past social stratification, which is an important topic of the book, to regard one another as equals in God's sight and consider exploring a relationship beyond professional partnership. Note I said consider just now, because the focus of the book isn't so much on the budding romance between a man and woman, but their concerted effort to pursue a task God has drawn them both to accomplish. At times, Ms. Wolfe had the option of trying to rationalize away some events, but chose to not do so and turned the reader directly to God as the source. I think that is as bold and needed in literature as life and really works well for Throne of Grace, underscoring the title's significance and the themes of the book.
The characters were likable, particularly Josie and Arthur. Which is good, because one of the few issues I had with the book was the number of perspectives it presents. There are several characters who take the reins at one point or another and give the reader their take on events. With the amount of introspection present in the novel, it gives the reader a pretty good grasp of who each character is inside and fleshes them out nicely, but at the same time I personally really just wanted Josie’s and/or Arthur's perspective. It would have heightened the suspense in a few places. That being said, I moved through the book quite readily and at the end wanted to know what happened next for the characters. I saw there is a sequel and from the description, though it shifts the focus from Josie and Arthur, I’d be willing to read it just to see if they appear again.
Overall, the book does an excellent job of grounding the reader in the spiritual lives of the characters, intimating their spiritual discoveries in such a way as the reader can pick them up and apply them one's personal life, and telling a story that leaves you wanting more. What else can one ask of Christian fiction?

1893, Newport, Rhode Island. Ms. Josette “Josie” Warren (18) was a housekeeper for
Mr. Davenport, & Mrs. Davenport at the Conte de Fée (mansion).
Their son Arthur Davenport had been away overseas in Europe.
Maddie (older woman housekeeper) also worked there.
Arthur is supposed to marry Ms. Catherine Harland. He is not thrilled about that.
He however had his eye & heart set on Josie.
Mrs. Lucinda “Lucy” Warren (mother, widow) still instilled the old fashion Christian values in Josie.

Mrs. Davenport gave a very verbal warning to Josie.
Mr. Davenport mentined to Arthur he might want to consider & marry Ms. Matilda Martindale (twin), Ms. Melissa Martindale (twin) or Ms. VanAllen.
He also wanted his son to follow in his footsteps in the family business.
Mrs. Davenport caught Arthur & Josie together, so long Josie!
Dr. Edward Colt (50+, Davenport family Dr.) came to see what he could do for Joseph who needed a
brace for his leg.

The most wonderful news Josie received as she was walking along the cliff, spying Dr. Colt he offered her a job as a receptionist at his office.
It wasn’t very long & Arthur got to meet Lucy.
Arthur & Josie had there so called 1st. date at The Creamery (ice cream shop)

Is there a match made in heaven?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, what a delightful very well written Christian historical romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Christian historical romance movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

This book had the tender sweetness, old-fashioned feel, and strong faith thread that reminded me of a Grace Livingston Hill novel. It was set during the gilded age of summer homes in Newport, Rhode Island where class distinctions played an important role in all aspects of life. The hired help had their place, and it wasn't among the rich and famous.

I really enjoyed the story line with its focus on judgment and caring for others as part of the Christian life. Arthur, the son of a rich railroad tycoon, found a relationship with Christ and a care for the helpless while making a European jaunt. But these sentiments don't match the plans that his parents have for him. Josie, a housemaid for his parents, has a deep faith and a natural intelligence. When the two happen to meet on Cliff Walk, they both realize they have a deep interest in helping the less fortunate. As they work together to begin a plan to help these people, Josie finds herself suspected of a fling with Arthur. In being judged by others, Josie has to confront her own judgmental attitude and what God expects of her in this area. Wolfe does a very good job of making the faith thread feel an integral part of the plot. Lucy, Josie's mother, and Dr. Colt were wonderful secondary characters.

I would have given this book at least a 4 but was prevented in doing so because of the need for stronger editing. There were numerous run on sentences (which often distracted my train of thought) as well as many punctuation errors. With stronger editing, Wolfe has the potential for becoming a much read author. **NOTE: This was an advanced reader copy and has now undergone several edits. So I would definitely up the rating to a 4.

FAVORITE QUOTES: "...loving was more than a word, more than a proclamation. Words were easy to say, but actions...well, love was an action.

"She would always be flawed, always make mistakes, but the important things was that she turned to Christ for help, sorry for whatever she had done, and determined through conscious effort not to make the same mistake again."

**I received a complimentary copy to facilitate this review. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.

I don't usually read Christian historical fiction, mostly because I'm not a huge fan of historical. But I have to admit, I enjoyed this book. I found myself listening on the way to my gym, on the way home, with the kids in the car. Even the teens could appreciate the fear of how a tarnished reputation can hinder opportunities and they wanted to listen, too.
I'm glad I listened!

I was allowed to read this wonderful novel by the author for an honest review.

I loved this story. Josie was a maid in a wealth family's home. She accidentally meets a young man,
Arthur Davenport. He is the son of her employer. She knows she should not be talking to him. He has just returned from a life altering change, his acceptance of Christ and he doesn't see rank and privilege like he used to. His mother puts Josie on notice if she continues to talk to her son she will be dismissed. Arthur and Josie's love of Christ is the strength for all of the problems they will face.
This is a wonderful story full of hope and happiness and hurt. How judgemental people are rich and poor.

Not being something I would typically read, I was unsure how to rate this at first. I am not a terribly religious person and yet the prose here and the charm it possesses- it really is of no matter. This is a lovely story and takes a look at the way people indeed did act in what I shall refer to as 'a simpler time.'
If only we today as a collective culture could take some of the innocence from the past and live our lives in such a fashion...as is regarded in this book. It seems a shame to me that we have learned so little from our ancestors of not so long ago, of indeed how we could/should treat each other.
This story does hold a testament perhaps that we could all learn from.
A sweet and charming story.

I loved this book! It was a sweet historical Christian romance that takes place in Newport, Road Island. The two main characters Josie and Author meet and the sparks fly. I like that they become closer by coming closer to God and doing his will. It has an evangelical feel that works well with the story. No romance comes without some rough patches and the pair must overcome theirs.
The only issue I had with the book was there was a lot of time stuck in people's heads, but it easy to overlook that in the book. I highly recommend to those who want to read a romance with a strong Christian theme.

A sweet love story with a Christian theme set in the late 1800's. It gives us a closer look at history and the culture at that time.. We are introduced to Arthur who is from a wealthy family and Josie who is working as a maid in their home. When the two become attracted to one another, Josie is fired. But Arthur is planning on creating a homeless shelter for the poor and Josie sees the value in an idea that is unusual for the time. I couldn't help but feel connected to Arthur and Josie as they struggled with their choices. I was drawn into their world and enjoyed their story.

Josie and Arthur’s story is truly amazing. The difference between them causes trouble for both of them. Watching these two prove themselves to the people around them is wonderful. The author will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
