The Titans Saga #1

The Rise of Legends

Rate this book
Fifteen-year-old Elric Blake always saw himself as a comic-book-loving goober of an outcast, never a superhero. But when a black hole releases a monstrous horde upon his small New England town, something within awakens, giving Elric powers and abilities he only read about in his comics. With the power to control dark matter and dark energy, Elric quickly realizes that his abilities stem from a symbiotic relationship with a Deva. But this god like entity’s goal is far from heroic.

Fifteen-year-old comic book mad Elric Blake has been brought up by his adopted parents, Mr & Mrs. Lee. He never knew his real parents but he assumed that they didn’t want him and so gave him up for adoption when he was a baby. In reality, the truth is very different.

The first time he notices something maybe different within him is when his best friend and the girl of his dreams Jen is knocked out by the school bully, Simon. Elric feels this rage and burning within him and subsequently, the bully walks away with a broken wrist, unfortunately, this just exacerbates Simon.

On the day of the big soccer game for the town, a darkness comes over the place and strange talking animals run havoc killing the people. When someone close to Elric is killed this strange feeling within him reawakens, but is what inside of him truly good, or are his powers something more sinister?

From the opening chapter which takes us back in time and sees Elric’s parents on the run from government forces who want them dead and also Elric, we see the heart-wrenching decision they make to leave their son in an abandoned building, hoping that someone will find him and take care of him to keep him safe.

The story then moves forward fifteen years and Elric presumes he is a normal teenager with normal teenager problems, school work, girl crushes, and bullies. It is not until the world is invaded that Elric and his powers come to life.

You can tell from the scenes and the plot that the author is a big superhero fan and if you are a comic book fan and want something a little longer and more in-depth that is along the same lines then this book would be perfect. It is full of action and adventure and out of this world characters.

There are a lot of characters and trying to keep up with them all was a little bit of a struggle and there were a few grammatical errors but these didn’t take away the thrill of the book and I have a feeling a lot of people won’t even notice them.

Overall, Titans: The Rise of Legends was a real roller-coaster of a ride. It is fun, exciting, and takes you on a journey as Elric discovers who he is and what he is capable of, plus, book two is already out so you can continue on the journey with the cast.

This book is full is action and intrigue. The perfect summer epic read for anyone who enjoys superheroes, whether in comic books, action films, or a YA fantasy novel.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first in this new series. This debut novel is filled with both heroes and heroines and a few colorful villains who deserve everything they get. An underground world, another world altogether, and a world we’re familiar with turned upside down.

I highly recommend it!

This is, if I'm not mistaken, CJ Lloyd's first published book and I have to say - I'm impressed!
CJ's story follows Elrick, a teenager who suddenly finds out he has something special inside him. Something so special, the US government has put a red flag on his name. (And how awesome is the name "Elrick"?! Easy to say, but so unique - I love it.) Elrick has a crush on a girl, gets beat up by a bully, gets his world turned upside down and is now faced with a new reality in a world he didn't knew existed. Dystopian teenagers finding "who they are" and saving the world are my favorite kind of novels, so this was on point for me. It's basically a Marvel origin story and I'll be sticking around for the sequel.
With any new author, there is room for improvement. Sometimes I found it hard to imagine exactly what was happening or where Elric was due to the fast paced nature of the story. I would have loved to read more about the physical characteristics of each being. With time and practice any author will find a way to express their imagination in a way others can "see". There are a surprising amount of characters you meet in this book, but I never felt connected to any of them besides Elric. There were some spelling and grammatical errors along the way, but nothing that interrupted the story. I was too deeply interested to spend time analyzing it.
I am looking forward to the next book! Titans: The Rise of Legends really leaves you feeling like you want more. The major story ends, things get wrapped up and you feel satisfied, but you know there is more to come!

For any child or adult who enjoys superheroes, whether in comic books, action films, or a YA fantasy novel, here’s one for you, and what great timing!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first in this new series. The author’s debut novel brings us both heroes and heroines to cheer for, as well as a few colorful villainous creatures who deserve everything they get. An underground world, another world altogether, and a world we’re familiar with turned upside down. But all hope is not lost.

Or is it?

You’ll have to turn the pages and find out because I’m not telling.

This book is full is action and intrigue. The perfect summer epic read!

This book had high hopes - the trouble was 100% in the execution. Amidst the proofing errors and thematic-jumps, this was a slog! It was very high-concept.. and that's what kept me reading. I'll read the next book in the series to see if things get any better.

Titans: The Rise Of Legends possesses an intriguing plot that includes monsters, superpowers, portals, multiverses, and other gripping elements that the science fiction genre is known for. The narrative starts with two characters running away from an unknown yet sinister enemy and although the narrative may seem like the typical fight between good and evil, the story’s unique scenarios and stellar execution make it stand out from the rest.
Despite the strange and deadly situations he and his loved ones encounter, the main character, Elric acts just like a normal teenager worrying about normal teenage issues, making his character feel both authentic and relatable. All of the characters featured in the book also display different personalities and often butt head with each other, ensuring that none of them feel flat or one dimensional. And despite the fact that some of them possess powers, they are also not invincible, though they try their hardest to push to the limit of their abilities.
Our main character Elric battles against a complicated relationship with his power which is known as the “darkness” and throughout the book, he struggles to maintain control of this seemingly dangerous power. The relationships between the characters were also quite notable whether they were romantic, familial, or just a bond between friends. These connections added depth to the story and aided character development especially in the case of Elric. Elric’s relationships with the other characters both built him and broke him. They both filled him with fear and gave him the courage to fight.
The author’s use of unique metaphors and inclusion of subtle irony adds refreshing twists to this tale of an unexpected hero. They also did an excellent job of including humor to balance out the dark themes that hung over the plot like a dark cloud. The worldbuilding was also quite detailed which kept me flipping the pages, wanting to learn more about this intricate world that the author had created. I also think it was very thoughtful of the author to include themes such as guilt, grief, and sacrifice because they are hardships that a lot of people deal with each day. This is an example of how fiction can mirror our experiences in real life.
You’ll love this book if you enjoy adventure and fight scenes; there was never an empty or boring moment. Each scene drove the story forward, propelling it to an exciting climax and introspective resolution. Two quotes that I believe do a good job of describing this book are “Making sacrifices for the ones we love is what makes us human” and “What’s inside you doesn’t make you who you are.” Overall, I’m glad that I picked up this book; exploring the world of the Titans was an amazing journey that I will never forget and I look forward to whatever else is in store for this series
