Starting Point

Rate this book
After years of waging a losing battle, Megan's resigned herself to kicking the bucket.

Discovering that the rural retreat of her childhood is now a crazy town full of Doomsday Preppers is a surprise, but whatever. It's as good a place as any to wait for the end of her world. If the universe would be so kind as to send a hunk to make the transition bearable, she'd be good to go.

Alec can't believe the woman he just rescued is the same girl who saved him all those years ago, when he was nothing but an angry street thug. She's not the doe-eyed teenager he crushed on so sweetly, but she still draws him like a magnet, and by God that he's not going to allow fate to take her away a second time.

Megan was Alec's starting point. Now they've come full circle- and he vows to be hers.

After a colorful array of jobs all over Europe ranging from translator to chocolatier to travel agent to sushi chef to flight dispatcher, Elle Aycart is certain of one thing and one thing only: aside from writing romances, she has abso-frigging-lutely no clue what she wants to do when she grows up. Not that it stops her from trying all sorts of crazy stuff. While she is probably now thinking of a new profession, her head never stops churning new plots for her romances. She lives currently in Barcelona, Spain, with her husband and two daughters, although who knows, in no time she could be living at the Arctic Circle in Finland, breeding reindeer.

5 - "...Together…" Stars!

It’s been too long since the wonderful Elle released a book, and Starting Point bought back all the great memories of how much I adore her writing, characters and story lines. I think this novella will hit home with quite a few readers as although the story deals with a sensitive subject that a lot of us have either dealt with on a personal level, or watched someone we love deal with, the author gives it the respect it deserves, around her usual humour, heat, heart and hugely likeable characters.

"Surviving is not living…"

Alec and Meg go back years, but it’s also been years since they have seen each other, finding her passed out drunk and almost dead from hypothermia, outside one of his rental cabins in NoName was not how he expected to reconnect with her. Time has changed them both, and he soon realizes that all is not well with Meg.

She was going out in style… and on her own terms.

I loved this novella, you go through the whole gamut of emotions with this couple, there are laughs, tears and plenty of sexy to balance everything else out. I love the preppers and this prequel novella was the perfect way to spend more time with them.

"With you I’ll take messy any day of the week."

A stellar return for Elle, I look forward to reading more from her, hopefully sooner rather than later!

"You made a hell of an impression on me."

4.5 ‘Star Shower’ Stars

My heart is full! Starting Point’s perfect balance of deeply emotional, lightheartedly funny and steamy romance left me feeling blissfully overjoyed!

How I missed Ms. Aycart’s brilliant writing, and her returning with this little treat novella was the best of surprises. Diving back into preppers’ world couldn’t have made me happier, specially considering we are going back to the past and witness Alec and Megan’s love story, one of my favorite NoName’s couples. I already loved them from Sky’s the Limit, but after Starting Point I can say I don’t just love them, I ADORE them!

“I don’t think you really understand—”
“Understand what?” he interrupted. “That you are all I want, all I see? I understand that perfectly.”

“You don’t understand the term ‘casual relationship,’ do you?”
He kissed her on the lips. “When it comes to you, there’s no way in hell I can do casual. Never. Nor would I want to.”

I knew going in – based on the first book – that their story, considering Megan’s fight with cancer – and the hints in it that their journey would be an emotional and deeply intense one, well, it was so much more! They pulled at my heartstring until I was shedding tears more than once, not only by Megan resignation with her fate, and Alec’s helplessness, but also the easiness in which he showed his unwavering love and devotion for her. She was it for him, there was never a doubt in my mind of it. The way he kept on fighting for her, for them, his words and his actions, his care and his worshiping of Megan blew me awed and set Alec up there, together with my other all time favorite book boyfriends. He was dreamy as it get and the perfect match for Megan’s strong and witty personality.

“Dying is easy, Megan. Living is hard.”

“Not acceptable. You die, you die fighting like what you are: a warrior.”

Elle Aycart truly has a talent in writing extremely deep situations and connections, but still keeping a light and happy thread on it, and this prequel proved just that. And lets not forget some insanely HOT sexy times. Not only their love and connection shone through, but their scorching chemistry was beyond palpable.

It was equally fantastic to get a look on the past of this prepper community, and see again so many familiar faces, that left me once again curious about their future, in particular Alec’s gang.

Starting Point was indeed the perfect come back for Ms. Aycart, this novella was the perfect little read to get us back hooked to this world, and her writing. Steamy, emotion packed and hilariously funny, this book left me craving even more, of not Megan and Alec – yes, I want to witness their HEA! – but all the Doomsday Preppers. I. NEED. THEM. ALL! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

“I want you. You, heart included, not just your body.”

“I don’t want to die staring at a hospital ceiling or an IV drip, surrounded by faces full of pity.”
“You won’t, baby. If you die, you’ll die staring at me, and it won’t be pity on my face. It will be love.”

First off, this book had me very emotional. I cried through at least 45% of it. That wasn't why it only got 3 stars.
No.1) I do not like the heroines in the books I read to be dominant in the bedroom. If she wants to assert herself outside of the bedroom that's one thing but not for the sex part. I don't even mind if they have equal parts in the bedroom but the heroin being the dominant that's a big turn off for me.
No. 2) that ending was not really a HEA. I need to know 100% that they definitely get their HEA.

This story was well written and I usually love Elle's writing style. I did not care for this book though
The couple was very likeable and strong but yeah... a lot of things still up in the air. There needs to be a follow up.

Be prepared to lose your heart to Alec and Megan

Even the Doomsday Preppers wouldn't be ready for this beautiful, crazy romance.

As soon as I read Book 1 in this series, Sky's The Limit, I was dying for Alex and Megan's story. When Starting Point was announced, I began a countdown to release day. I had such high expectations and I can say with ease, Elle far surpassed every one.

Alec and Megan met when they were younger, and although we don't get any flashbacks to that time, you can feel the depth of emotions that two teenagers felt. Alec had a rough childhood and refers to himself as being a 'thug' when they first met. Megan was the sweet, soft but bossy girl who came for the summer and turned his world upside down. It's almost 2 decades later that the pair are reunited and the roles have reversed, Although you couldn't call Alec soft he is definitely sweet and gentle when it comes to Megan.

Megan has spent the last 10 years battling cancer, finally ready to move on, she decides to travel around experiencing everything she can before time is up. When she lands in Noname, she isn't expecting to find Alec and all the emotions he brings out in her. She's prepared to leave, but Alec won't let her go without a fight, and if she gives in, it will be the right of her life.

I love the preppers, their crazy antics, though not as hectic as in book 1, kept me laughing through every page. I absolutely adored Alec, he fell in love with Meg at 15 and that love has carried through his adult life. As soon as he has her again, he can't and won't let her go, even if he does pretend to let her be in charge. Megan is a kick butt heroine, she's been through so much and is designed to her fate, but she wants to live life to the fullest. When Alec makes her see she still has life left in her, I couldn't be more proud of her. This book has absolutely everything you could want and more. I am now desperate to read Sky's the Limit, to get more of this pair! Easily 5 star showers and more.

“You don’t abandon the people you love. You carry them when they can’t walk on their own two feet because they will carry you when your strength fails. You keep going and never give up. Ever. That’s what it means to be alive” -Alec to Meg

The best thing about ‘Starting Point’ is how atypical it is. Alec and Meg’s relationship is a testament to what every relationship must entail. They communicate well and don’t get bored with each other, at all. They are best friends who are in love with each other. Meg gave cheerful vibes despite her predicament. The author used different forms of humor which made the book stand out. After reading the summary of this novel readers would expect long melodramatic scenarios but that’s far from reality. The book has a rare setting, most of the background characters are doomsday preppers, people who always prepare for worst-case situations. The entire novel is hilarious.

‘Starting Point’ has a lot of references so it would not be as enjoyable to people who can't comprehend those as compared to those who can. Details about background characters and their stories would have added more depth to the story, like her best friend Jess. The steamy scenes are unconventional as well, but the author made it work. This book is recommended to readers who are in the mood for a casual rom-com.

So many stars. This is one author, if you haven’t read her books...you need to nowish. They’re filled with so much heart, character and originality. I love this prepper world and so excited to read another book in it. We get to go back in with the Doomsday Prepper’s of NoName and I couldn’t have been more excited and they did not disappoint.

I absolutely adored these two. Megan aka Boss and Alec aka Bonehead, met when they were 13 and 15, and hung out all summer, fishing with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, sounds like the perfect romantic start to me. Fast forward a lot of years later, and they never forgot each other.

This was such a beautiful and unique storyline full of all the emotions. These two had my heart for sure. This book was funny, sweet, sad, and the heat between these two was off the charts. I felt every emotion and all the love between these two. I really can’t say enough about this book, besides it’s one of my favorites this year. An epilogue and hfn.

Ok I did have warning that this had very graphic sex scenes. I’m not a prude, but this for me ruined what could have been such a great book.
When Megan aka “the boss” rents a cabin to get away she doesn’t realize that she will meet an old friend that she crushed on. She is prepared to die after her cancer returned. But Alec has other plans for her. This begins a quick, hot relationship that lasts a couple weeks.
I loved the storyline about the preppers and doing things on her bucket list. I could even deal with most of the bad language. Never so glad to finish a book and then delete it.
I could not recommend this book to one single person. I could have enjoyed this book,if it was lacking the 6-8 pages of pure filth. Ewwww.
I didn’t see any typos or grammar errors, but I did skip a few pages. So only reason the book gets a 2 star rating.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. I am posting my honest review now.

This was one of the worst books I’ve ever read. I was so disappointed because I loved the first Doomsday book so much and eagerly awaited this. First, the characters were written as immature and dumb. I despised the fact that Meg called him Bonehead. I felt felt it was demeaning and out of place for a man who had clearly been around the world and was an anchor for the town.

There was no sign That I recall of the characters from the first book. It would have been nice to grow the community and knowledge of the place. There was hardly any development of the town inhabitants. Every interaction was massively superficial.

A woman who has gone through 10 years of cancer hell I would expect to be more mature. Meg just wasn’t. She was a caricature of a human. I wanted her to have empathy and connect with people, but she didn’t want to learn her lessons, unless it was about K-pop.

This book is about cancer and end of life choices. It could be really triggering. I felt that it was written very flip and juvenile with no depth. Really one of the worst books I’ve read. There isn’t even a happy ending.. after being tortured through the book I hoped for a miraculous recovery, but nope not really...just limbo.

It has been awhile since I read the first book of Doomsday Preppers. I have fond memories about that one.

In this one, we followed Logan's sister, Megan who had cancer and went to NoName to live out her last days so to say. There she met the boy she once knew, Alec. She was ready to accept her fate and now she found her second chance?

Anyway, I enjoyed it. The townspeople were as crazy as I remembered. The hero was a sweet gentle man. And the girl... she was nice. Hah. Guess you could tell which person in the relationship I have an issue with.

Starting Point the prequel to the Doomsday Prepper series was a great and emotional read. It has been over a year since I read book 1, Sky’s the Limit, but I remember reading snippets of Megan and Alec so it was wonderful to get their story.

Megan and Alec’s journey was heartbreaking yet so heartwarming at the same time. Megan had basically given up continuing to fight her cancer. She had been in remission for 18 months but that unfortunately did not last. She was now done, no more tests she was just going to live out whatever time she had left. This latest stop in NoName, Minnesota, is a place she remembers fondly. She had spent a summer there when she was thirteen and where she had met the hero in this story. Alec considered himself a delinquent 18 years ago, the only good thing he remembers was the young teenager with the opaque eyes. I loved when they reminisced about their time together. Alec was amazing with his determination to keep fighting. He found her again and was keeping her.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. We see a few of the local preppers and they are as hilarious as they were in book 1. I am looking forward to more in this series.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.

I suggest reading this AFTER "Sky's the limit" by the same author which I loved.

I'm grateful I could read the actual love story between these two beautiful characters because I couldn't help being drawn to them in "Sky's the limit" and I definitely wanted to read more about them.

While I enjoyed this story, I wished it was more developed because it has all the right ingredients for more than a short novella.

I wanted to know more about the MC's past and I definitely wanted to read about the actual reconciliation between Megan and her brother.

I love this author's wrinting and would love to read more crazy love stories in the Doomsday Prepper world in "NoName - Minnesota.

Bewarned:
- The heroine is a cancer patient
- The MCs have lots of chemistry and explicit sex throughout
- The epilogue doesn't go far into their future but we thankfully see more of them in "Sky's the limit"

Pain. Acceptance. Hope, and above everything, LOVE. Starting Point has it all. I've missed Elle's words so much. She never fails to put a smile on my face with her poignant storylines and loveable casts of characters. This is a second chance romance with a twist. The story line hits close to home on many fronts and was exactly what I needed.

Bonehead and Boss have come full circle, except life has thrown them a huge curveball. They met during summer vacation years ago. Megan goes back to NoName to heal, never thinking Alec would still be there. Enter the Doomsday Preppers and shenanigans ensue. I laughed out loud and fell hard for this couple. I loved revisiting old friends and can't wait for the next book.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a honest review

Elle Ayecart's newest book Starting Point was well written with some great characters. Meghan get's locked out of her vacation cotttage and she thinks she's going to freeze to death but Alec who is the caretaker of the cottage finds her before she does. The next morning they discover they knew each other as teenagers, in fact Alec never forgot about Meghan. The last 10 years of Meghan's life has been really hard, she's been fighting cancer and she has pretty much given up. The story made me both sad and uplifted but overall this was a hard book for me to read. Although I did love this town of doomsday preppers, I wish there was HEA instead of a HFN.

Starting Point by Elle Aycart an amazing five-star shower read. This is 0.5 of the Doomsday prepper series and I need more, what a kick-off to the story, it was amazing. How crazy and fun NoName sounds, it sounds like a place I would love to visit but maybe not live, as much like Megan and Jess I also have a fondness for small town America, and romance novels, so for me meeting Megan was like meeting a new friend. There are so many amazing characters in this story and Elle Aycart has a way of making you fall in love with even the most crazy of characters, I cant wait to hear more about the crew, now if you will excuse me I am off to get my emergency kit.

I usually do not buy stories about cancer patients, because(shallowly), I don't want to be depressed when I'm trying to destress. Starting Point is as it's name says, and at no time while reading did I feel depressed. The character Megan, though resigned to her fate, is fatalistically upbeat. The story is realistic its truths about cancer patients, and yet hopeful through her love interest, Alec, without being sappy.
I didn't read this shorter novel straight through in one sitting, but it was endearing enough that I kept coming back to it. Even though it was free on Bookfunnel, I will be purchasing a forever copy soon.

This is the story of Megan aka Boss and Alec aka Bonehead! Don't you just love their nick names?
These two met when they were 13 and 15, became exceptional friends and hung out fishing.
They meet again years later, but they had never forgot each other.
The story line full of nearly every emotion that you could possibility feel. These two had beautiful chemistry.
I really can’t say enough about this book, besides I never wanted it to end, I want to know if Megan and Alec Married!
I just want an epilogue and a HEA.

OMG
I took much longer than usual to read this as I kept being overwhelmed by emotion and felt unable to carry on.
I am a breast cancer survivor (19 years yayyyy) and I had a mastectomy so many of the issues addressed here are dear to mtg heart.
I loved how Meg gets to meet up again with her childhood 'bf' Alex and it's soon very clear he regards her literally as the love of his life. He is not put off with her diagnosis or by her body and is a rock for her. Of course it's challenging that this is a HFN ending rather than a HEA but I hope we will see them again in the series and Meg survives 🙏

A reluctant 4 stars.... the end was not an END... Does she live or die??? and does she rectify the situation with her brother??

A woman learns she has terminal cancer and is attempting her bucket list before she dies. She encounters an old friend from childhood who eventually falls in love with her, despite her terminal diagnosis.

So I read this, anticipating something sad, but then the epilogue left me with questions and unresolved feelings. I love this author, but this missed the mark for me with the ending and unresolved plot points.

I really enjoyed Sky's the Limit and I was hopeful Starting Point was just as good. It was! It was funny and the secondary characters were so interesting as well as all the "prep" talk. Megan was such a strong individual with the cards she was dealt. Alex was the man I would want on my side fighting my battles. Elle Aycart did a suburb job in balancing humor with such a hard and emotional subject. It was truly one of my fave reads of the year.

I love all of Elle Aycart's books! This one hit home more than the others because of it's subject matter! Ms. Aycart handled the situation with compassion and humor! I loved how the characters reconnected and how the became aware of their own feelings throughout the book! Well done, Ms Aycart! Definitely recommend this book!

Amazing story. It had it all! Uniqueness, depth in characters, setting a great world, strongly emotional, erotic, romantic!!! I loved it! Even though I had to stop reading because I got emotional not being able to hold my tears, I was hooked with the story! It's my first time reading Elle Aycart, but she is an amazing writer. Looking forward to reading the follow up of this story!
