Sweet Omegaverse #3

Lola & the Millionaires: Part Two

Rate this book
Lola is being hunted by her past, stalked with every step she takes. Sheltered with the pack of her dreams, at first it seems like the hardest challenge isn’t even staying safe from Indy. Tensions at work are at a tipping point and after taking the role of management’s spy, Lola’s in the crossfire if anything goes wrong.

As romances between Lola and the pack members are developing left and right, the woman who swore she wanted nothing to do with alpha is turning to them like a bloom to the sun. If only it weren’t just one monstrous alpha that twisted her own thoughts. Lola is quickly realizing that her worst enemy is herself, and it’s like walking the tightrope to find a balance with the pack that gives her strength rather than sends her toppling to the ground.

But Indy won’t be ignored. One way or another, he’s determined to get his hands on her again. Lola needs more than a pack to shield her. She needs to be ready to fight.

Can’t say it has the same punch as Part One, but I still enjoyed the crap out of this audio re-read. I love how Kathryn split the 6 men, so we focused on 3 in book one and the other 3 in book 2. Unfortunately the men in part 2 can barely hold a candle to the first 3.

I know everyone is obsessed with Matthieu and I agree, he’s great. But there’s just something about Rake that pulls me in, especially when he’s paired with Leo. The perfect sandwich is between those two!

Original Review 5/30-6/1/21

4.5 stars

This part was more sex than story, not that that’s ever been a problem for me. 🤣

Calebs never been with a woman ... so, obviously looking forward to that!

Oh Wes, let’s fix that unrequited love, shall we? But of course, Lola won’t let it stand for long. I adore that she’s the one to finally see him. I can’t wait for them to come together because i just know it’s gonna be amazing.

I failed to mention in my review of Part One; while I’m obviously a big fan of the RH aspect I’m also a fan of the fashion. Matthieu, Cyrus and Lola all work for a fashion magazine/corporation. While I may not be the most fashionable person I know, I do love it. In my own writing I like to include a lot of designers in my descriptions. It all stems from a love of Project Runway and movies like The Intern (w/Dominique Swain) and The Devil Wears Prada.

While I truly adore them all, I have to admit Cyrus has been at the bottom. Until Rake said the magic word ... Dom. Mmhmm, show me what you’re working with Cyrus!

Oh Caleb is into edging? Well isn’t he just multidimensional! Suddenly I wanna be in a room with Cyrus and Caleb.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over all the purring, it’s both comforting and strangely a huge turn on. Easy enough to find a dude that growls but where the hell can I find one that purrs?!

Oh Kathryn Moon ... first you gave me the best orgy. Then there was foreplay in the theater balcony. And then the first time with Wes?! Good god, it’s as if you know my deepest, darkest fantasies. And hell, I already knew I was looking forward to Cyrus and his domineering ass!

I got a little teary eyed when she could finally feel Leo through the bond. While I love them all, Leo will always have a special place in my heart.

Even though I’m sad to see this end, the conclusion is just perfect, wrapped in the most beautiful package.

In hindsight, this book is kinda inseparable from part one. Still plot heavy with characters I like, but left me wanting a little more. I don’t think I’ll continue with the series but I would like to give Kathryn’s other books a go.

I wish there were 4 more books about Lola and her pack. This is definitely my new comfort read and I’m already planning to reread soon.

There were some tough moments to read through, like when Lola watched the video her rapist had of her. I wasn’t expecting that and the way Moon wrote Lola’s struggles, suffering and self-loathing was so well done, I was right there with her along the way. But Lola conquered her life back, she fought to get better, sought professional help and more importantly, gave herself a little bit of kindness and understanding, which she deserved.

The attempt at some kind of plot outside the romance was still there but it was done better than in the first book at least. I still didn’t care about anything else but Lola climbing each member of that pack like a tree. But it was a nice attempt, I supposed 🤣

Leo was even more perfect than in the first part. Even Lola thought at one point every pack’s member’s issues until reaching Leo and realizing he’s perfect, because he really is. I missed more scenes with him alone, but I understood the other relationships needed more development. His last scene with Lola made me cry like a baby.

Rake is probably my favorite, I think?? Or maybe Leo. Or both together… Anyway I loved his little argument with Lola, how he was such a brat but so full of heart and good intentions all the time. He made every sex scene ten times hotter by default. I still don’t understand why he didn’t fight harder against getting kidnapped, though. It felt a bit too convenient and it could’ve been done better.

Caleb was such a nice surprise. The idea of Lola being the first woman he was with was so incredibly hot to me. And how he was so tender and caring, and then lost himself in his rut during sex.

I just knew Matthieu was going to be the first to bond with Lola. I just did. I loved to see Baby and her Howlers agains. That little glimpse at Books and Tornado, hot damn y’all. And then Bullet’s reaction to Matthieu just about killed me. I wouldn’t mind a PWP crossover 🥵

We finally got more Wes, and it was good but I was expecting more I guess. I loved to see a big, hot Alpha like him being inexperienced, to learn he had never knotted anyone before, and how Lola helped him get closer to the pack, but at the same time it didn’t sit well with me to think this pack was functioning the way it did before Lola arrived.

They treated Wes like a bodyguard/chofer. He didn’t sleep with them in their cuddle piles, kept his distance and basically just worked all day. Wtf? Rake was supposed to be his family but it never felt like they were close, either. I don’t know, it just weirded me out.

I feel like with a better pace and development, Wes could’ve been amazing and the missed opportunity just makes me sad.

Cyrus is complicated. I actually loved the little surprise of sunshine Cyrus being a Dom, but some bits of their scenes together made me cringe a little bit. Their pet names while “playing” being one of them. Calling him Boss when he was literally her boss at work… yikes.

During their games, he overstepped a few times and even though he profusely apologized to Lola, it just made me uncomfortable and it kind of ruined their scenes for me.

I feel like dynamics would’ve worked better and things would’ve felt more real if Lola had bonded with some of them and not all. For example I feel like her connection with Wes and Cyrus was a bit shallow and forced. I didn’t mind it that much but I feel like I’d have LOVED if she remained just friends with some of them, the way Matt and Rake were just family for example. If Moon wanted all of them to end up bonded with Lola, perhaps she should’ve worked on those relationships in a more clever way.

Eve the alpha hitwoman was fascinating. I felt like there was so much more to her and her motivations, I literally squealed when I found out we are getting her book next.

Overall, I feel like this second book suffered from a lack of better pacing and development. Personally for me, it’d have worked better if the story held to Lola’s apprehension to Alphas and very slowly changed that. She got involved with Caleb and Wes too fast. And things with Cyrus were a bit ridiculous. Better and slower development and leaving some alphas out of the bond would’ve been perfect for me.

But I’m still giving this book 5 stars based sorely on my level of enjoyment and investment. I mean, I cried at the end, which always makes a book a 5 stars for me.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review - thank you!

Still a great book, but IMO just a little less great than the first one. To get the negative out of the way first:

The Lola duet is more one books split into two than two separate books in the series, so this one picks up right where the last one cut off plot-wise. Thematically, though, I feel like there were a couple of significant shifts. Right up until the end of Book 1 Lola clearly still had massive self-worth issues linked to her status as a beta, and I feel those were overshadowed in this book by her self-worth issues linked to her involvement with Indy. True, those things are connected, but they're still distinct elements of her character and I kind of feel like the former wasn't addressed as much as the latter. (At least on page; Lola visits a therapist, which unfortunately isn't witnessed first-hand by the reader). Her family situation is described but also not really addressed head-on, which contributes to my overall slight dissatisfaction with this bit.

My other nitpick with this book is I'm still not really sold on Cyrus's character. I guess that isn't too surprising; the highest number of harem members I've seen handled 100% successfully is five, and THAT took five books to work through. Here we have six in two books, so it's understandable that one might slip through the cracks in comparison. We're told over again that Cyrus loves falling in love, is a bit of a playboy, and Lola at one point even implicitly seems to be giving him permission to go out and find the 'shades of love' he needs. He denies needing anyone but their pack, but I wasn't convinced he'd changed enough from what we saw in Book 1. This isn't helped by the end of the book, where The good news to balance that, though, is I'm now TOTALLY into Matt (the older guy). He's great.

Overall

While not a 5-star read like Book 1 was (bearing in mind I am extremely extremely miserly with my 5 stars, so that doesn't mean this is in any way significantly inferior) I'm still impressed with Kathryn Moon's navigation of character and relationship dynamics. Lola will always, always have a special corner of my heart for being the first beta heroine I've seen who actually has hangups about not being an omega. I adore Rake, who is completely one of a kind. Looking forward to seeing what other characters we dive into next! Eve gets my vote, as well as that alpha guy Wes work with...

I made a "squee" tag, and I made it just for this book. That should speak for itself.

I'm having a hard time not rereading the series immediately.

Also... Eve in the next book, you think? She's badass! And nuts! Fingers crossed!

2.5 ⭐️ Definitely not as good as the first. What a shame.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ book 2
✨ omegaverse (not shifters)
✨ reverse-harem
✨ she's a beta with a traumatic past
✨ they want her in their pack
✨ billionaire romance
✨ age-gap
✨ 5/5 spice (mm, mf, mmf, mmfm, mmfmm)
✨ mating instincts, pheromones, biting, knotting, bonding marks, anal
✨ emotional healing journey
✨ found family
✨ angst
✨ HEA
✨ TW: physical, psychological, and sexual abuse (flashbacks), emotional trauma, kidnapping, murder

My Thoughts:

If I look at this book objectively, it's really not bad. There's continued emotional healing, sweet moments, spicy scenes, and some laughs. But it was too long and didn't have as much substance as the first. My 2.5-star rating is mostly based on my enjoyment, not the actual quality of the story, which is why I rounded up for the Goodreads star rating.

Honestly, I was bored. A lot of the heavier emotional stuff was dealt with in Part 1 so this was mostly focused on her bonding with the rest of the pack aka having sex with everyone. While I appreciate and like smut, there was just too much sex and I needed more plot. After a while, all of these scenes blended together and I started skimming a bunch. Because of this, I ended up losing interest and stopped caring about the characters. So once the conflict finally happened at the end, I was checked out.

Also, out of all of the guys, her connection with Cyrus was the most forced. I genuinely don't think they should have had a sexual relationship since they seemed better suited as friends. It seemed like Kathryn Moon just wanted her to bond with all of the guys, even if it didn't make much sense.

2.5 ⭐

Hear me out, it's not that bad. But what was the point of being two parts? I'm not used to reverse harem so I don't know if six love interest is a lot but to me, it was. Some characters were so overlooked that I didn't even get their relationship to their omega or the FMC. Like that Cyrus guy. Or even Wes, even though I think he could have been a good character if the author managed to write him differently. Even Leo (that I really liked in part 1) wasn't much there. I get it, the French guy is the author's favorite. BUT PLEASE, DON'T EVER LET YOUR CHARACTERS SPEAK FRENCH AGAIN. That was so cringe, I thought I was going to skip these parts. (Also, I discussed it with another French speaker, yes, the 'Lolotte' part was weird as fuck, it's infantilizing and from a character 20 years older than our FMC, that's so distasteful)

Also, plot? I mean, there was an attempt to have one (even two, with the Wendy/work thing) but bro? What happened. Even the bondings felt rushed. How can a book (part 1 & 2) be this long but this empty? :(

I might read the first book of the series but seeing the alpha's names (Tornado? Bullet? Green? Even Baby???), I'm not sure if I can handle it.
But if there's an Eve book, I might try it.

✅ Reverse-harem
✅ Omegaverse
Very explicit and spicy smut 🔥🔥
✅ Pace
✅ Characters
✅🆗 Plot
✅🆗 Development of the relationships
❗️❗️ Trigger warning: Mentions of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse.

OMG. I thought the first book was very smutty, but I am pretty sure this one is even smuttier. I’m not kidding, there is a 20 pages long orgy scene near the end that was just SO intense. 🥵

This book picks up exactly where the previous one ends, making it kind of like one long book instead of two distinct parts. Lola is still fighting her inner demons and still trying to accept that she has a place among the pack and that they will not tire of her after a few weeks, or stop being kind and respectful.

The main part of the book still focuses on Lola getting bonded to her pack (and having torrid sex with them), but the other plot line with Indy stalking and threatening Lola and the pack was more interesting and relevant than the secondary plotline we had in the first part of the story (Wendy quitting the magazine and creating a big fuss). I like that the Indy issue is finally solved and that Lola will finally be able to move forward without being afraid of seeing him again or being scared for her security and her pack’s security.

I kept waiting for that voice in my head to rise up and throw accusations. That I was an alpha hungry slut. That I was an idiot. That I was falling into a trap. Except each ugly thought felt…tired. Like even the hateful part of myself couldn’t work up the energy to bother. So I let them go.

As in the first part of this story, there are some dark themes explored as Lola struggles to feel happy and worthy of her pack. The way the author wrote her in those darker moments when she is full of self-loath and anxiety was amazingly well done. I could feel all the angst and crushing sadness, but also the hope that something good was finally happening to Lola. Something that was real and that would remain.

I applaud Lola’s decision to seek professional help because as an angst and darker book lover, I’ve read some dark stories, but it is so rare to have a character asking for professional help! Most of the time they try to push through by themselves, or they just learn to survive and to feel better with the support of their loved ones (or psychologists do not exist because I do read a lot of fantasy too). It was a nice change to see a strong character not being afraid to ask for extra help. Her pack is also super understanding and supportive. She really could not have found a better pack to help her, love her, and remind her every day of her worth.

Anybody who didn’t see Wes’ value was missing at least four of their senses on top of being emotionally blind.

Lola is getting closer with the other members of the pack, but I have to say that some of these new romantic bonds did seem almost a little forced at first. In the first 25% of the book, Lola has a steamy moment with Caleb and Wes, and a very intense moment with Cyrus too. It’s as if the author wanted to make sure that every alpha had their equal share of sexy time with Lola, but it felt as if any situation involving her and a member of the pack automatically would end up with sex. I am happy to see that she is more confident and that she trusts the pack, but she did a complete 180o; she went from being wary of alphas to getting sexually involved with all of them in a few days. I am happy with the stronger bonds she’s building, but it would have been smoother, or more realistic if it had happened over a longer time.

That being said, I am still happy with the new relationships she develops with Caleb, Wes, and Cyrus. They are all different, and all bring something unique to Lola’s life, complementing each other... I guess I just find the fact that she bonded with all of them was pushing it a little, considering the little amount of time she had with some of them. I think the pack could still have been very functional and strong even if she remained unbonded to some of them, as was the case for Matt and Wes or Rake and Matt before Lola came into their lives.

“I don’t ever want to hear you speak about yourself that way again. You can question whether or not you are satisfied with your place here with us, but never your worth. Do you understand me?”

We get to meet Intense-Cyrus in this book, and he is yummy. It was surprising to see sunny and bubbly Cyrus being so hot, but I am not complaining at all. I love his fierce and protective side, but also his more mature and responsible side. I also like how he, Wes, and silver-fox Matt are work partners and friends, without anything sexual between them.

Caleb was a revelation in this book. He is so quiet in the first book, I was shocked to see how sexy and intense he could be, and I enjoyed every moment Lola spent with him. Wes also has a bigger role in this one, and while I was happy to see more of him because he piqued my interest in the first book, I cannot say that I grew attached to him very much. He was not a bad character at all, but he was simply not as awesome as some other members of the pack.

Sweet Leo is still the perfect and most amazing Beta there is, and while I understand the need for Lola to develop and strengthen her bonds with the other members of the pack, I miss reading about her and Leo being all in love and so cute together. Rake and Leo are my favorite members of the pack. Rake can be so intense and a little bit of a spoiled brat, but not in a bad way at all, and when it comes to Lola, there is nothing he enjoys more than spoiling her and caring for her. Man, I wish I had a pack of devoted sexy men fighting to take care of me. 😅

“Did you just say you were in Malta?” Baby squawked in my ear. “Who the hell’s gonna take me to Malta?”
I heard a chorus of voices in the background of the call, mostly affirmative offers and one “What state is it in?”

We also got to see a little bit of Baby and her Night Howlers in this book, and it was nice to have a little glimpse at their pack life. I still prefer Lola’s story though, but I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the Howlers in the next books either.

The main character of the next book, Eve, was introduced in this book, and I have to say that she is quite intriguing. The fact that she is an alpha will also create a different dynamic for sure when it comes to pack and romance.

I enjoyed this...but not quite as much as Lola Part I;I felt the same level of suspense was missing and I skimmed some. I still enjoyed it. What's brilliant about having a contemporary setting for Omegaverse with this author's style of reverse harem is that it brings in a very human element to all the dynamics and bonds between the members of the pack. While I've certainly never been in a polyamorous relationship I've watched a couple documentaries--many of the issues, challenges and dynamics in this pack mirrored real human relationships, especially ones people in polyamorous relationships have. This is sorely lacking in just about all other Omegaverse reverse harems. I enjoyed the chemistry between all the characters and think this author excels at writing interpersonal dynamics. The treatment of past trauma & the healing process was done very well.

Quick notes: I agree with the review that brings up an issue with Cyrus. I have nothing against him being a dom, but it felt....not completely natural? Almost like the author decided last minute to make him a dom in order to spice up Cyrus & Lola's relationship because there wasn't else much there (especially compared to her developing relationships with Matthieu, Wes, & Caleb). Matthieu & Lola's relationship was done very well, as was Caleb's (I wish there had been more of him). There were a lot of dudes in this pack to balance out.

Overall I'm glad I read this series and will probably read more by this author.

I really liked this series, I think. It was my first Omegaverse series (which I had never heard of or if I had, thought they were talking about some shifter series) and I'm not sure I love the genre. It was well-written, but I would have preferred about 50% less sex and 50% more plot. There wasn't enough conflict. Sex scenes went on for pages, only to be followed with a new scene a paragraph later. Just too much for anyone that reads a book a day. Maybe it's a better fit for readers that read a chapter or two a day?

My favorite aspect of the series was Lola's personal growth. The cruel inner voice she dealt with in book 1 to her speech she gave to her "non-villain" was really inspiring. That speech was awesome, if brief. It was very satisfying.

I think I'll read this author again, but I may be more careful of which genre I'm choosing.

Such an amazing conclusion! The beginning went a little slower than anticipated but that last 30% was a total whirlwind!!!

I was also squealing as she got those final bonds and connected with the whole pack. And the ending? Too damn cute. Ugh what a fabulous series.

This was the book for Lola’s healing. It had limited angst (until the end) and focused on her solidifying her role in the pack and her relationship with the guys. I really liked how Lola took time for herself, away from the pack. She already knew her mind was made up, but needed to confirm it, and so she went away for a few days. I respect that. What I respect even more is the guys not discouraging her, and understanding why she did it. Just like in the first part, the healthy communication is abundant.

I really think the author slept on Wes and Cyrus. I’m glad Lola ended up with them, but they were 2 of the least developed relationships and it makes me upset.

The confrontation between Lola and Indy was pretty predictable, yet powerful. Lola got what a lot of survivors don’t- closure and the right to speak their mind. That part was very satisfying to read.

The ending was a perfect way to wrap up this 2 part book series. I really just wished Cyrus and Wes got the attention they deserved like Leo, Rake, Matthieu, and even Caleb, did.

I still love this duet 💕 for me, it’s the characters that make it so good! Lola and her harem are all very engaging to read, and I couldn't get enough of them. Leo is pure perfection, but the moment where Lola reunites with Matt in the plaza was my favourite. That whole scene, and their dynamic was just so lovely to read. My one wish is that I would have loved to see more of Lola thriving at Designate, but overall my favourite comfort read.

Finally! It's over.

I'm not going to bother with a recap review. It's just too much and I don't really care anymore. I do have a few thoughts, though.

Why the fuck is this book so damn long?! Jesus H Christ, it's not that damn interesting. It doesn't require that much information. Plus, at least 80% of both books is just Lola b!tching about how she's no good, nobody wants her, she feels like a burden, yada yada yada.

There's one semi-decent sexual extravaganza where the guys fock each other. If we're not getting detailed M/M sex, why even make it part of the plot? Just have them all be roommates. Don't tease me with thinking I'm going to get some hot butt focking and cock sucking and then not deliver. That just pisses me off.

Wes. Why the fock did we have to wait until the 70% mark in the SECOND book before Wes got any action?? Bless him, his sessions weren't even that deep. Poor dude was totally left out. Never felt like he was part of the pack at all. I really like Wes and was sad for him.

There were several sexy times that were super good, especially with Matthieu and Caleb.

Why did we have to spend so many chapters with that Baby girl?? I don't know her. I don't want to know her. Why is she taking up space?

The guys have to bite her to bond her. Do they have fangs?? Are they just chomping like toddlers do and leaving teeth marks? Doesn't that look a little weird?! Then they have some kind of healing junk in their saliva, so how is that dispensed? How are their teeth penetrating the skin?? Teeth are flat and you'd really have to chomp HARD to get penetration.

I did like all the guys. They get 2 stars.

I called it. Two books for Lola but the author couldn’t even create a connection with all men. The first book was more Rake & Leo. Now book 2 is more Matthieu (which I love), but I find it extremely unfair for Cyrus. There’s a limited amount of scenes connecting them. Cyrus and Lola’s relationship seems rushed especially at the end, like they’re already bonding even though it doesn’t seem like they’re as close as Lola with any of the other men? If an author can’t establish a romance between each of the harem members, then please please lessen the number of men 😮‍💨 If this were a romance book with just Leo, Rake, Matthieu and Caleb, I would’ve given it 5 stars. There was little to no heartwarming/bonding scenes with Cyrus. Caleb had a nice scene in the opera but it ended there. Love the doting on fmc trope but the imbalance in the romance threw me off and made me mad. I didn’t even want to finish this because I knew I would be so disappointed in the end. I love the sweetness between Matthieu and Lola in this book, but other that that everything is imbalanced. Leo appeared less as a main romantic interest in this book. Sure, it makes up for his many appearances in book 1 but I sure did miss him. Plus why did the hitwoman have to appear 3 times??? I get Eve would have her own book later on but those were very useless scenes that made me go “wtf, just use the pages to create deeper connections with the men”. sheesh. Honestly I can’t count the number of RH authors who love big harems but can’t even establish a connection with each men 😩

3.5 Stars again. I basically felt the same way about this book as I did with part one. The sex to plot ratio was still a bit off for me. There are two action-heavy moments and the Indy plot is wrapped up within two chapters and the rest of this is mostly sex scenes. I don't say this in a prudish way; I liked the sex scenes and I thought they were well written, I just tend to prefer a more even mix of romance and plot in a book that's pitched as more of a romantic-suspense type book. I enjoyed this and would definitely read more from Kathryn Moon. She writes RH dynamics really well (although I do think Caleb could have been cut completely and almost nothing in this story would change, sorry to all the Caleb lovers). I also thinks she effectively adds in some humor without making me role my eyes. I would definitely recommend this, especially if you care less about the plot and just want to see the relationship dynamics.

CW: stalker ex, past intimate partner violence and rape

Let’s start with the positive: Lola is an absolute shining star. Her emotional arc across the two books was fantastic and really moving. We don’t get to see her therapy sessions but she at least starts seeing a therapist in this installment and that in tandem with the pack’s care shows how far she’s come from where we began. It was very powerful to watch her heal and I wish the book hadn’t gone in the direction it did because it lessened the impact of the normal things people do post-trauma. More on that later. There were moments when Lola verged on a little too perfect or Not Like Other Girls. She always has the best ideas at the magazine, despite never working at one before; there’s no situation where all of a new assistant beauty’s editor’s pitches would be accepted or that they’d be almost immediately tapped to be in line for positions with more power. That could have gotten annoying but I really liked Lola and her ideas were fresh and interesting so I let it slide.

I also wasn’t sure what to make of Lola, a beta, eventually having a sexual relationship with all six males in the pack when Rake, the omega, only has a sexual relationship with three of them. The relationships all develop organically and at different paces, which was good to see. This is a hot book and I enjoyed the inventive sex scenes. However, I really enjoyed how it was more of a queerplatonic pack in the first book and that the men could all date outside of the pack. Some of my reaction is just plain confusion over world-building because omegas don’t necessarily have a sexual relationship with all pack members and alphas aren’t necessarily with each other. This pack was unusual in being polyamorous and allowed to date outsiders. I don’t understand if all packs need betas or if it’s unusual that there are now two betas in this one. Couldn’t she have just been with a few of the MMCs, not all?

It was odd that Rake was supposed to be the glue of the pack as the omega but by the end it seemed like everyone saw Lola that way instead and no one was dating outsiders anymore, as far as I could tell. Maybe that’s all find and good but we also don’t have a sense of how Caleb, Cyrus, Leo, and Rake function anymore and whether they still have a sexual relationship apart from Lola. The MM relationships could easily be read as fetishizing and that’s always going to give me pause. Plus I also hated that p-in-v sex was treated as more special or the only real kind of sex, especially when Wes had just fingerbanged her. Like, my dude: you two just had sex. If you thought she was fine to do that much, then there’s no reason to withhold anything else unless you are personally not interested in going further. It was frustrating to read such a heteronormative approach to sex in a purportedly queer book.

Just as with the first book, the MMCs don’t have much of an emotional arc to speak of. Additionally, race/ethnicity was not mentioned for any of the purported characters of color. If I hadn’t taken notes from the first book, I would have had no idea that Cyrus has “deep brown skin” or that Lola thought Leo was Latino or Hispanic. That’s really unacceptable representation.

All this aside, this could have been a 4 star book if not for the choices it made with Lola’s arc around her trauma. I don’t think the source of a character’s pain should serve as the external conflict or the low moment. Instead, it was such a predictable route and I’m tired of it.

Despite these issues, I had a really hard time putting this down. Moon’s books are compulsively readable, even when dealing with tough subject matter. I don’t know that I’d recommend these installments because it’s a lot of pages when part 2 didn’t have the payoff I was looking for. But as with all things, your mileage may vary. I’m very glad to see Lola get her HEA and to know she knows her worth in and of herself and as a beta.

Characters: Lola is a 26 year old white beta assistant beauty editor at a magazine who is exploring her domme side as a way to regain control from her trauma. Leo is a bisexual beta club owner and real estate partner. (Lola thinks he might be Latino or Hispanic in part 1 but his race or ethnicity is not otherwise discussed in either book.) Wes is a white alpha personal security company owner, former military gentle giant. Cyrus is a bisexual alpha head beauty editor at a magazine and an artist. (He has deep brown skin but no race or ethnicity mentioned.) Matthieu is a white French alpha global media company CEO who plays the guitar; he is in his late 40s. Caleb is a bisexual white British alpha interior designer with a caretaker personality—I wondered if he might be demisexual. Rakim is a bisexual 31 year old omega model with tan skin.

Content notes: nightmare, flashbacks, PTSD, stalker ex, past intimate partner violence and rape, abduction of MMC who is beaten and threatened with rape, attempted abduction of FMC (she gets away), physical assault, murder of villain, image-based sexual assault (stalker ex has video of her), secondary character recounts killing someone after he imprisoned her (previous book), property damage and vandalism, slut-shaming, past death of FMC’s mother (lung cancer), FMC’s mother was emotionally abusive, family planning discussion, intention of getting pregnant (epilogue), on page sex, menage, orgy, D/s, knotting, mating bites, edging, public sex, orgasm control, voyeurism/exhibitionism, diet culture, alcohol, inebriation, marijuana, gendered insults, gender essentialist language, ableist language, mention of past death of Matthieu’s mother (pancreatic cancer), mention that FMC’s father left when she was young

3.5/5 🌶️

I am so glad at this fresh perspective on an omegaverse. The FMC is a beta, yet her men still treat her like the queen she is. 👑 the epilogue was kinda cheesy and involved done without it tbh
