In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A princess rejected and hunted by her mother, and a prince who lives as a shunned outcast.

Princess Pearl flees for her life after her mother, Queen Margery, tries to have her killed during a hunting expedition. Pearl finds refuge on the Isle of Outcasts among criminals and misfits, disguising her face with a veil so no one recognizes her. She lives for the day when she can return to Warwick and rescue her sister, Ruby, from the queen’s clutches.

Amidst his royal testing on the Isle of Outcasts, Prince Mikkel of Scania has kept his identity a secret. Captured by a warring band of outcasts and condemned to die, he finds himself making friends with an intriguing but feisty young veiled woman. Intending to win her trust and gain her help to escape, he soon finds himself coerced to wed her.

Mikkel reluctantly agrees to the union to save his life, and Pearl hopes the marriage will provide protection for her and Ruby. But the queen is more determined to kill her daughter than either Pearl or Mikkel realizes and has a sinister reason neither expects—one that could rip their new love apart forever.

The real Snow White story.

WELP. I am basically obsessed with this series and I need the next book ASAP. I'm just as in to this series as Jody Hedlund's 2019 Lost Princesses series, which I loooooooooved. And I'm so happy I can say the same for this one. I read Beguiled in a day...and I don't mind saying there were a couple spots in the action where my heart legit raced. I love the storyworld—so much history and detail! And the romance is perrrrrfection.

Perhaps it is because I never truly cared over much for the original tale, or even the Disney movie. But Snow White is a story that I love to see retold.

And this was a Snow White unlike any I have read before. It had somewhat Robin Hood vibes with the outcasts, a Loch Ness Monster, and of course not a small amount of romance.

I think I liked this book even more than the first, and now I am quite full of anticipation to see if the third will prove to be even more enjoyable, or if this will be my favorite of the series. That remains to be seen, but in the meantime, definitely read this book. 11/10 recommend.

I received a copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

'Something in the air bodes of evil.'

I love the medieval time period. It's one of my all time favorite settings. Jody Hedlund has set several series here and they are all super good. The Fairest Maidens tells the stories of three princesses, based on three well known fairy tales, only better! Three brother princes are completing their Testing to determine which should be king of one kingdom, while three princesses are trying to escape the evil clutches of the despicable Queen Margery.

I read this book in just a few hours because of it's ability to hold my interest without wavering. Though Hedlund's genre here is YA, I found these books completely compelling for adults. I absolutely can't wait to find out what happens in # 3! Because a reckoning is definitely coming. Highly recommended.

*My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own. I received no compensation for this review.

I really love Hedlund's stories which is why I hate that I read them so fast!

Beguiled started right after the first book ended, and it tied together nicely, there was as much adventure, romance, and need-to-readness as in the first book as well!

I am highly intrigued by Jody Hedlund's ability to write fairy tales, medieval romances, and historical with a skill that pulls me in fr the start.

There is some violence and of course, the bad guy is evil so I'd say this book is good for 16 up.

I am eager for the last book in the series but saddened at the same time that the series will end.

Read for review for the author, all thoughts are my own.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Based on the Snow White fairytale, this second book in the Fairest Maidens Series is a great read! The characters are rich and deep, their personalities a joy to read as they grow and develop in the story. The romance is steamy but clean and suitable for younger readers. There is also intrigue and secrets that are surprising and unpredictable. I loved the setting and medieval time period of the story as well! I also really appreciated the theme of focusing on inner beauty instead of external looks, a great lesson for young adults reading this story. I also love the loose ties to The Lost Princesses Series. This series continues to get better and better! I highly recommend this novel!

A fresh new Snow White re-telling from the pen of Jody Hedlund.

Mikkel has been sent to the Isle of Outcasts to serve out his Testing in order to prove his worthiness for the throne of Scania. There he is greeted by two warring gangs of outcasts, men and women different or disfigured in a way that they were rejected from common society.

Princess has been hiding among the Outcasts for years from her murderous mother Queen Margery, her flawless features hidden beneath a veil. When Irontooth captures a young nobleman who has been living among their foes, Pearl is tasked with learning his secret. Can Pearl and Mikkel be better together against the forces of an evil Queen?

Engaging from the start, I was drawn into the plights of Mikkel and Pearl. Mikkel is an honorable young man bent on proving himself to his kingdom and father as a worthy king, I liked how he is determined, and can sometimes overthink things. He has a great character arc over the course of the book, and it is well done in its subtlety.

I loved this engaging and action filled twist on Snow White, Pearl and Mikkel are amazing protagonists, who are willing to have their ideas challenged. Pearl loves her sister, and will do whatever she can to get her sister out of their mother's clutches. I admired her commitment to her mission and her respect for those around her.

Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the series, my favorite so far, engaging adventure, romantic and grounded with faith. This fantasy fairy tale re-telling does a great job of keeping elements that make the inspiration apparent, while also completely shaking it up in a fresh new way. I have no idea how Scania will pick its king, because I'm positive that Kreston will be just as amazing as Vilmar and Mikkel...I need the next book ASAP!

This book is filled with adventure, daring rescues and narrow escapes. It’s got some very good lessons on looking beyond beauty. It’s mostly set on Outcast Island. The inhabitants are individuals who have physical flaws and are shunned by society. Pearl has sought refuge here but has hidden her identity. She doesn’t have any physical flaws. Mikkel is doing his Testing on the island and is captured by Pearl, since they lived with rivaling groups on the island. The Loch Ness Monster makes an appearance in the book too! I enjoy reading this author’s young adult books and am thankful young people and adults have these to read, for entertainment and lessons tucked within the pages. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series and more adventures with the princes and the beautiful maidens they encounter. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Beguiled is Jody Hedlund's brand new retelling of Snow White! I loved the theme that a beautiful heart is much more important than our outward appearance. Pearl and Mikkel, an outcast Princess and a Royal Prince undergoing testing are strong characters who learn to look upon the heart. Full of action, I think people of all ages will enjoy this story. Very engaging and delightful I highly recommend book 2 in The Fairest Maiden series!
So grab a hot chocolate and a comfy spot, you're sure to love Beguiled!

Jody Hedlund always captivates me with her YA fantasy novels and Beguiled was no exception! Princess Pearl and Prince Mikkel give a fresh face to the tale of Snow White and this story had everything I could ask for: a fairy tale retelling, a marriage of convenience and a lake monster. Pearl sought refuge among the outcasts of society after her mother tried to have her killed. Despite the danger, she knows she must return to Warwick soon to rescue her sister. Mikkel simply wants to finish his testing and prove he is the right king for the kingdom of Scania. He just can’t figure out the lesson he’s meant to learn.

Pearl and Mikkel’s story picks up where Gabriella and Vilmar’s left off with and promises to carry through into Besotted. I am so looking forward to the converging of the three storylines and the final confrontation with Queen Margery. I wholeheartedly recommend Hedlund’s Fairest Maidens series! If you enjoy fairy tale retellings and medieval romance or are a fan of Mellanie Cellier or Melanie Dickerson, this is the series for you.

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A princess rejected and hunted by her mother, and a prince who lives as a shunned outcast.

I am always wonderfully entranced by Jody Hedlund’s novels, and “Beguiled” is no exception. With excellent character growth, important lessons, and all the romance and danger one desires in a medieval novel, “Beguiled” is the perfect addition to any YA bookshelf.

Romantic novels that include a solid foundation of friendship between the two main characters are elevated stories in my eyes, and Pearl and Mikkel’s friendship is strong and deep. Though they are coerced into marriage early in the novel, they are friends first and I truly treasure that. Mikkel certainly needed a lot of growth, and his character arc is one of the best Hedlund has written, in my opinion. His occasional lack of confidence is endearing, and he is quite a multidimensional and intriguing character.

“Beguiled” is perfectly romantic and teaches, without coming across as preaching, relevant and important lessons. Each novel Hedlund writes only solidifies her talent and impresses me more. Readers will not want to miss this magnificently unique take on the Snow White story, an excellent addition to The Fairest Maidens series! 5/5 stars

“Beguiled” is the second book in Jody Hedlund’s The Fairest Maidens series, following “Beholden” (available now) and preceding “Besotted” (releasing November 17, available for preorder).

Award-winning author Jody Hedlund presents the second book in her young adult trilogy, especially geared to teens ages 13-18 who enjoy a fairy tale retelling.

In Beguiled, Princess Pearl of Warwick lives in disguise on the Isle of Outcasts, hiding her face (and identity) with a veil. She escaped to the isle after her mother, Queen Margery, tried to have her killed. Hiding in a different outcast group on the same isle is Prince Mikkle of Scania, who is also in disguise. Neither reveal their true identity to the other, even after they join forces to fight the Queen’s plans and attempt to rescue Ruby, Pearl’s younger sister. They build their relationship based on respect and character instead of physical beauty and birthright. Will they be victorious in their fight against the Queen’s evil plans?

Hedlund creates a world based on elements of fairy tales and the real world, even providing a map of the Great Isle, where these kingdoms are found. Not only does she creates a believable world, but her storyline is filled with action, plot twists, and clean romances between the lead characters, making this series an excellent read for teens and those who are young at heart.

Beguiled is a clever twist on the familiar Snow White fairy tale. Readers will find true love and inner beauty is central in this tale, and perhaps be encouraged to look to inner qualities over external ones. Loyalty and caring for others despite their outward appearances is also a key part of the story.

The three books build on one another and are best read in order. Book 1 (Beholden) was published last month, and book 3 (Besotted) will be available next month. Fans of fairy tale retellings, whether they are young adult or adult readers, will want to read the entire series!

When it comes to YA fiction, Jody Hedlund is at the top of my list. Her Fairest Maiden’s series, quite simply, is spectacular. We began the series with Beholden, and are now introduced to Beguiled, a medieval tale ripe with adventure, romance, intrigue, and fairy tale magic.

From page one I was engulfed and were it not for the fact that I have a daughter to tend to, I would not have put it down! Teens and adults alike will rave about this book and the entire trilogy. The characters, setting, and constant movement were so beautifully interwoven that I could not help but fall in love. Prepare to be beguiled yourself with this book. It’s a fairy tale you won’t want to miss!

Loved it!

Such an exciting, page-turning adventure. I fairly inhaled this book. I didn’t mean to, but I read this book in a day. I couldn’t put it down! With vivid engaging characters and a storyline that pulls you in and won’t let go, you won’t want to pass up the opportunity to dive into this story!

Lessons of letting go of bitterness, looking at the character of people and not the outside, and that love isn’t just a feeling, but a choice. The characters grow and learn from each other throughout the story. I enjoyed the adventure, the drama, and the suspense it all blends together seamlessly.

Jody Hedlund’s books are always an instant buy for me. I don’t just read the story once and move on, I often come back and enjoy the story again! This newest series is a pure delight and I simply can not wait until the next story comes out!

The oldest brother, Prince Mikkel, has been sent to the Isle of Outcasts for his Testing. Well, wouldn’t you know that there are two bands of outcasts on the Isle and Mikkel and his manservant finally manage to join one of the bands. But that only lasts for a few weeks because they get captured by the opposing band. Then the excitement really begins. The author revealed in the first book that Princess Pearl had been reported as dead from a hunting accident. However, some hinted that she might still be alive and hiding. Although Mikkel does not know her, he encounters a young woman who goes by the name of Veil living on the Isle of Outcasts. As a member of the band of outcasts who kidnapped Mikkel and Gregor from the other band, the leader of her band decides that she can be very helpful to the band by learning who Mikkel is. At the same time, Mikkel is trying to learn who Veil really is. The story holds the interest with some very narrow escapes, a huge helping of intense action, and a good dose of romance. Just when you think you have someone figured out and know what they are going to do in a given situation, they turn the tables and do the opposite. I enjoyed this and believe young adults will find it quite entertaining and spellbinding. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

In the second book of the ‘Fairest Maidens’ trilogy, Jody Hedlund retells the familiar fairy tale of Snow White…with twists and turns that kept me from closing this book until I’d finished it!
Hiding her incredible beauty and royal identity under a veil, Princess Pearl is surviving a life on the Isle of Outcasts, a home of both criminals and those rejected by society for illness or deformity. Amongst a misfit band that controls a portion of the island, she’s learning to fight and make stealthy raids, preparing for the day when she returns home to rescue her younger sister Ruby from the mother who wanted to see her dead.
Prince Mikkel, eldest son of the king of Scania, is simply determined to prove himself worthy to be king by fulfilling the conditions of his Testing, living amongst the people of the Isle of Outcasts and understanding the meaning of the instruction he was given, ‘Look on the heart’. But when he’s captured by raiders, among them a girl known only as ‘Veil’, he’s faced with a dilemma; keeping his secret could end in losing his life, but revealing himself for who he is might forfeit his right to the crown.
I deeply enjoyed this sequel to Beholden. The secrets that push the novel along, both those kept and those revealed, and the characters themselves, had me reading nonstop until I finished the whole story. I found myself deeply fond of both Pearl and Mikkel. Pearl’s devotion to rescuing and protecting her sister, no matter the cost, was a beautiful twist on the traditional story of Snow White, incorporating elements of another favorite fairy tale, ‘Snow White and Rose Red’. And Mikkel’s struggle between his head and his heart was incredibly relatable and well crafted. His own insecurities and struggles made him someone I both sympathized with and admired deeply. Both characters were so engagingly written they won my heart!
The theme of looking past outward appearances and finding a person’s worth in their heart and character is both timeless and timely. Pearl’s hope that her veil would cause others to love her for her heart and not her beauty, and Mikkel’s growing hope to see her as she was, even though he expected her to be scarred or damaged, were beautifully portrayed. While we most likely aren’t hiding royal birth, many of us have pieces of our lives that we choose to veil from others in the hopes of finding acceptance. Secrets that may not be painful, but that we still may believe make us strange or hard to love. And finding those who love us enough to look past the veil (or maybe, this year, the mask), is a beautiful thing indeed.
I’m eagerly looking forward to the conclusion of this trilogy in ‘Besotted’, a twist on the Sleeping Beauty story, especially now, because I can’t wait to see more of these characters I’ve fallen so deeply in love with!

I loved this book! Beguiled is the second book in Jody Hedlund’s Fairest Maidens series. I read Beguiled in one day, it was that good! Beguiled is a retelling of Snow White and it follows Mikkel, the oldest prince of Scania, and Pearl, Queen Margery’s daughter. Mikkel is sent on his testing to the Isle of Outcasts but he never imagined what he would find there or that he would fall for someone he believes is blemished. Pearl only wanted to save her sister, but God had other plans.
Mikkel was a strong man, but he was also kind. However, appearance meant a lot to him. He had been tasked to work among those who had been outcast because of their appearances. I thought it was so cool to see him grow throughout the book. He began to learn to see past appearances and expectations of others. I loved reading about him falling in love with Pearl, I thought they were super sweet! He cared for her even before he loved her and he wanted to keep her safe.
Pearl was an amazing heroine, I thought that she was really cool. I think that in general Snow White characters are more timid, but Pearl was a warrior. I loved how strong she was, but how she was also vulnerable at times. She was beautiful but she wanted to find someone who would love her for herself and not just her looks. It was so interesting to see Mikkel fall for Pearl but being held back because he thought she was disfigured.
There were two quotes that I really liked. “Bitterness leads to bondage, but forgiveness sets us free,” This quote reminds us to forgive and that bitterness will only leave you more upset. The second quote is “Love can always grow. ‘Tis a choice we make to respect and cherish someone.” Love is a choice and I think it was so cute to see Pearl and Mikkel chose to love each other.
The story was riveting and I couldn’t put the book down. I had to know what would happen next. I loved the side characters, especially Irontooth. Pearl’s relationship with her sister was sweet and it reminded me of my own relationship with my sisters. Queen Margery is so evil, but then again she makes a great villain. :)
I don’t usually like Snow White retellings but this one was so sweet! I think I was more excited to read this book because I was already invested in the story. However, it captured me on its own account. You need to read Beholden and Beguiled, they were amazing retellings and I can’t wait to read the next book!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Beguiled takes two of my favorite things - fairy tale retellings and marriage of convenience stories - and combines them into one stellar novel!

First, a note: To get the full understanding and impact of this series, you should start with book one, Beholden. That novel clearly explains the Testing that Prince Mikkel and his brothers are undergoing, and it gives valuable context. You could still dive right in with this book, but you might encounter some confusion.

Beguiled begins with Mikkel's capture by a rival band of outcasts on the Isle of Outcasts, and he meets "Veil," a young woman with a presumed blemish/deformity who always wears a veil over her face. This woman is actually Princess Pearl, daughter of Queen Margery (the series' villain), who fled after her mother tried to have her killed.

Soon, the leader of Pearl's band of outcasts decides that Mikkel and Pearl should marry - and Pearl realizes that marriage to a Scanian prince might be her only hope for saving her younger sister Ruby from her mother's evil clutches. Though it's a marriage of convenience, attraction and love soon follow.

I very much enjoyed this second Fairest Maidens novel! Though the beginning was a bit slow for me (and I never really did care much for the rival outcast groups and their fight against the Inquisitor), I loved the romance. Hedlund is a master at infusing chemistry onto the page, and I loved watching Mikkel and Pearl slowly fall for each other. And those kisses!!! The book also includes themes of inner vs. outer beauty and self sacrifice that we could all learn from. It's a great novel for older teens and adults!

Disclosure of material connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Beguiled by Jody Hedlund is the second of The Fair Maidens trilogy. This book gives us a glimpse into the eldest brother, Prince Mikkel of Scania, the firstborn son of King Christian of the Holberg lineage. The Last novel, Beholden, we followed the middle brother, Prince Vilmar and his testing and adventures. Now the reader gets to see Mikkel and his Test on the Isle of Outcasts and his blossoming relationship with Princess Pearl whom he meets as an in-hiding “Veil”, the island’s inhabitants, and solve the mystery of the assigned motto: To Look on the Heart.

I have to say, I loved this book even more then the previous. I loved Mikkel’s story, his journey, the positive changes and growth that he experiences through his obstacles, and I loooooove the chemistry between Pearl and Mikkel.

This book has everything: action, adventure, an evil Queen, adversaries, obstacles, romance, positive lessons and characters, and an excellent ending all wrapped into much more then “just a fairy tale”.

I also love that the overarching theme of Queen Margery and her quest to create gold with alchemy and the human heart continues from the last book, throughout this one, and projects into the last.

An excellent plot, character cast, and a great ending make this the perfect historical fiction/romance/action/adventure/fairy tale.

Very, very good. I can’t wait to read the conclusion, Besotted. Highly recommend.

5/5 stars

Adventure, romance, and a return visit to the fairy tale Snow White. What more can a reader ask for? Jody Hedlund delivers another intriguing medieval story and this time, the two main characters, Princess Pearl and Prince Mikkel, are pitted against Pearl's mother, Queen Margery. She is truly an evil Queen. desiring to be the first person to make gold, and one of the requirements is a maiden's heart! Would she really kill her own daughter to complete this evil deed?

There is a powerful chemistry between Pearl and Mikkel and it doesn't hurt that they are both 'easy on the eyes' but Hedlund's story reminds us that an attractive appearance should never be more important than one's inner beauty. Beguiled also stresses the need to overcome hatred and bitterness so that we can truly forgive and there's a reminder that we often need to make sacrifices for those we love. Hedlund shares so many Christian values in this entertaining retelling of Snow White and there are several surprises also!

This is the second book of The Fairest Maidens series and, even though it is labeled as young adult literature, I was completely immersed and I'm anxious to see what's in store in the next book! I highly recommend Beguiled to all who enjoy medieval stories filled with Christian romance, adventure, and drama.

Beguiled, the second book in The Fairest Maidens series, is a compelling and creative retelling of the classic Snow White story. In the pages of this young adult novel, author Jody Hedlund once again reveals her profound talent for crafting engaging stories that readers of all ages are sure to enjoy. Brimming with romance, intrigue, and adventure, this medieval fairytale is truly entertaining and memorable.

With characters and settings that are wholly riveting and vividly detailed, Beguiled is as captivating as the title portends. Even while shadowy woodlands, misty islands, sea monsters, rogue leaders, outcasts, and a sinister queen threaten their goals, the main characters reveal hearts of courage, self-sacrifice, and honor. As the story unfolds, meaningful twists and surprises ensure that this novel is refreshingly clever and utterly satisfying.

From beginning to end, I found this story to be imaginative and enjoyable. With great skill and thoughtfulness, Ms. Hedlund has woven a tale that is genuinely special and appealing. Beguiled is well-written and worthy of notice. I recommend it wholeheartedly to all readers.

A story that really enjoyed to the fullest because of the many adventures that were inside.
This was a book that I was really looking forward to and with Hedlund at the helm I wasn't disappointed at all!
I finished this wonderful tale in a day because I became lost in the story and time got away from me.
The setting for which this story takes place is perfect! I'm learning to love the Medieval times.
I most appreciated how the author has added faith filled themes in this book.
Bitterness and hatred can easily enter a person's heart if they don't watch out.
I can't tell you enough that I really enjoyed this book to the fullest.
I was sad when this book came to a close but hey! I know I can always reread it again and again.
Now, I'm eagerly awaiting the next book.
Hedlund has done her job in making me happy.
