Hey, the story of King David in the Hebrew Bible is among the best in the collection. Last year when I read through the whole Bible 1st and 2nd Samuel were my favorite books for the stories. Ecclesiastes is probably my favorite overall. The character of King David is human and very real human things happen to him. David is more relatable than many of the the other characters.
Breaking Samuel into two books has to do with scroll length, in ancient times you could only get so much onto a single scroll, it is actually a single narrative of the first two Kings of Israel. I don't do story or plot, look to others for that. Suffice to say, there are many literary references to the Books of Samuel, and to a churchgoer the story should not be a surprise. Lots of fun stuff here, told in the biblical way, which is quite a bit more blunt than most Christians know. Lots of sex and fighting and plotting and revenge, it is not a sedentary story.
I went to the trouble of getting a journaling copy of the CSB translation. The Christian Standard Bible came out in 2017 and is very clear and easy to read. To a reader with some familiarity with the King James Bible there might be a certain lack of poetry and beauty of language, but it is in 21st century English and the meaning is much easier to understand than in antiquated texts. It reads easily and clearly, I like the CSB.
I think the Christian Bible, maybe more specifically the Hebrew Bible, is an important thing to read. So many Bible stories are known to even non-churchgoers and non-believers. The stories are part of the fabric of out society and as such should be read, they are not what most people think they are. For example, David is known from the David and Goliath story, but David the warlord womanizer and outlaw killer is less well-known. Things like this are important for understanding Christianity.
I bought this copy from Lifeway online for like 5 bucks and shipping. I have a couple of Bibles, different translations but I wanted to read the CSB this time. This edition is a nice size with a good font. The text is on the left hand side and the right side is blank so you can take notes, it is a nice little book. All the important English translations of the Bible can be found free online at different sites, BibleGateway is the best of them I think and there are free kindle editions you can find on Amazon and Project Gutenberg
