Enchanted Occasions #2

Devouring Flame

Rate this book
Can a chance meeting rekindle their incendiary attraction?

While cutting through the Interstices—the post-creation gap between realms—Smith, half-demon tech specialist for Enchanted Occasions Event Planning, spies the person he yearns for daily but dreads ever seeing again: the ifrit, Hashim of the Windrider clan.

On their one literally smoldering night together, Smith, stupidly besotted, revealed his true name—a demon’s greatest vulnerability. When Hashim didn’t return the favor, then split the next morning with no word? Message received, loud and clear: Thanks but no thanks.

Although Hashim had burned to return Smith’s trust, it was impossible. The wizard who conjured him holds his true name in secret, and unless Hashim discovers it, he’ll never be free.

When their attraction sparks once more, the two unite to search for Hashim’s hidden name—which would be a hell of a lot easier if they didn’t have to contend with a convention full of food-crazed vampires on the one day out of the century they can consume something other than blood.

But if they fail, Hashim will be doomed to eternal slavery, and their reignited love will collapse in the ashes.

Luckily Smith is the guy who gets the job done—and Hashim is never afraid to heat things up.

The blurb tells you everything you need to know about what this story entails.

What I will say is that I liked the continued world building and the different creatures present in this. The romance was standard, but you do have a heinous bad guy to really root for his demise and a supporting cast that kept my attention.

The premise about an interspecies paranormal event planning business is original to say the least. Another easy read from the Beyond line!

An extra half star for Rion, the sweet-hearted, cruelly mistreated Minotaur.

I don’t know whether this book suffered due to the fact I picked it as my last book of 2021, and therefore I had to rush a bit to get it done, but I didn’t mesh very well with this story or the second-chance romance going on between leads, Hashim and Smith, a conjured ifrit and a fire demon.

To be fair, I didn’t love book one in the Enchanted Occasions series either, so this may very well just be a case of incompatibility between myself and the author’s style of writing.

Devouring Flame is the second story in the Enchanted Occasions series and focuses on two characters we met back in the first book - Smith, the fire demon who works for Enchanted Occasions, and Hashim, the ifrit who was one of the contenders for the prince's hand in marriage. In this story we get to find out why Smith was so sullen towards the end of the event, and also why Hashim was really there and then left so abruptly.

This book is a bit hard to explain without giving everything away - the blurb does a good job at setting things up, but there is so much MORE to this book, and I found it completely enjoyable. Hashim is stuck working for a real jerk - the Ringmaster, at a Vegas that is like ours, but isn't. Hashim, along with several other people are stuck working there, and once Smith reunites with him and discovers what's going on, is determined to help rescue them all and stop the Ringmaster for good.

Enchanted Occasions is hosting a huge celebration for the vampires, so Chef is back, and is as awesome as ever, and we also revisit Brooke and Forest. We also get to meet some new characters, and I especially adored Rion and how sweet and gentle he was with everything (the flowers, the egg-salad sandwiches! Too sweet!) As with the first book in this series, the characters the author has created are just quirky and wonderful, and I continue to love the world building in this series.

Most of all, I loved the chemistry between Hashim and Smith - they are quite literally smoking hot, being a fire demon and a fire djinn-type of being. I felt the ending, with how they freed Hashim and everything with their true names, to be just wonderfully romantic just so perfect for them.

I don't know who I see next for a story, but I would gladly read more set in this world with all of these fun, quirky supernatural beings! If you enjoyed the first story, I think you will enjoy this just as much, if not more.

I received an arc copy in exchange for an honest review.

This one is even better than book one! Wow.. this love story was all so action packed, suspenseful, scorching hot (guess that's a given when the two MCs are a fire demon and an afrit! LOL). As much as I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the two MCs, my favorite person in this book was by far Rion the Minataur. He was so wonderfully sweet and childlike and with him being a humongous minataur created such a contrast that it was just perfection! I also loved seeing all the unique Enchanted Occassions employees especially Chef and Brooke. I also love the continued world-building the author has done here, she has created a truly marvelous and complex world. Here's hoping that the author might write a book 3 and give Mikos his HEA next!!!

A Joyfully Jay review.

This is the second book in the Enchanted Occasions series, which started with Nudging Fate, but this can easily be read as a standalone. The premise is simple enough: Smith works as a tech guru at Enchanted Occasions, which caters events for the paranormal communities. While there’s some hinting at a greater story between Smith and Hashim in the first book, you swiftly learn all you need to know here in order to follow them along in this adventure. However, the first book was fun enough and if, like me, you prefer to read a series in order, the first one was certainly an enjoyable read.

Smith is an “aitcher,” a half-and-half or half-breed, neither human nor demon, but something unwanted and in between. Like most aitchers, regardless of their powers or appearance, he was despised by both sides. Fortunately, he, like many others, has found a family at EO, which has a liberal hiring policy and is almost entirely staffed by aitchers. As a fire demon, Smith has certain needs in order to keep himself healthy, and a strict diet that involves meat burned almost to a crisp. It’s a lonely life, being unable to easily touch or hold another person lest his magic cause them pain, and in the ifrit, Hashim, Smith finally thought he’d found someone that could not only take everything he had, but could give, in return. However, after a passionate night, when morning came, Hashim left.

Another brilliant entry from E.J.

When you find an author who's work just vibes for you, it's the best feeling.

I'm catching up now on some of the other books from E.J. that I've not got round to before and it's a blast.

This was probably my favourite so far in the Enchanted Occasions series.

E.J. Russell always blends such interesting characters together, and the world they've created in the Enchanted Occassions series is extremely clever!

In my opinion, you can read Devouring Flame as a standlaone. We meet the characters in Nudging Fate, but E.J. Russell does a great job of filling in the blanks so you won't be lost.

The audio is beautifully performed by Kirt Graves.

“Devouring Flame” by E.J. Russell centers around indentured ifrit Hashim, who has been forced to work for The Ringmaster in a seedy carnival show located on the Interstices section that coincides with Las Vegas. When the event planners for supernaturals, Enchanted Occasions, decide to use this locale for the North American vampire convention and their even rarer Centennial Feast, Hashim is forced into proximity with Smith, the half-demon he inadvertently betrayed. Like most things in Vegas, there is a story behind the heat and glitter, and it will take luck and ingenuity to get past the house odds and hit the jackpot, if he can survive long enough to take the chance.

This gay paranormal/fantasy romance is part of the ‘Dreamspun Beyond’ series and is the sequel to “Nudging Fate.” I am fascinated by the wonderful world-building this author does, as familiar tropes are twisted just enough to provide freshness and thought-provoking stories. Not only are many of the secondary characters just as intriguing as the leads, but the reader is effortlessly drawn into their stories and invested in their struggles.

I love the way we are reminded that bigotry comes in all forms and requires a determined effort to resist, that appearances can be deceiving (when has anyone bothered to put a Minotaur in a good light?), and the delightful way we are invited to laugh at inside jokes (of course Vegas would have the majority of American vampires living there…it IS the city that never sleeps!). The contrasts between conventional lore and these folks is a never-ending source of entertainment and I can’t wait to see what other stories flower from this author’s fertile and impressive imagination.

The EO crew are back with yet another zany madcap events management disaster in the making. This one stars Smith (IT controls) and a secondary character from the first book - Hashim (an ifrit). And no Enchanted Occasions novel should be without the hysterically amusing Chef (goblin beserker) who features quite a bit of more this time round. A 100-year event vampire conference, a powerful carnival Ringmaster with enslaved 'carnies', an adorable 10 foot tall Minotaur with a lunchbox ... all adds up to another frothy, fun-filled fantasy 3 star read from the author.

A lot more compelling than the first book. This time, we have a demon and a fire being who deserves so much better. And I have to say, the twists were enjoyable. I'm hoping Forrest gets his own book in the future too, he's a delight.

‘Devouring Flame’ is just about the perfect title for a story about two fire-based beings who basically ignite each other’s souls after their first encounter. The story is set in an Interstitial pocket – a realm between realities where both magic and technology work. Enchanted Occasions is central to this series, and with its many supernatural and other employees, it’s a great part of this very imaginative world the author has created. Where it was a wedding in book one, this time EO has been hired to organize the vampires’ Centennial Feast. It’s a day once every 100 years when vampires who can eat real food, and as you can imagine, that requires some doing.

Enchanted Occasions, large event planners are hosting a mega party for Vampires in Vegas. FIre demon Smith, the event coordinator, meets up with ex flame Hashim the ifreet, who is now enslaved to the Carnival Master the owner of the event venue. If the ifreet can only find his true name, he will be free of his cruel master and set about marrying the man he loves. The showdown between team Enchanted Occasions, a Minotaur, a Chef and the Circus Master only promises disaster, but proves to be the ultimate hit of live entertainment where vampires are concerned. An amusing read.

I haven't read the first one, but I am glad I got to read this one. I missed how they met and their hot one night together, but we get to see them again. Yay!
For Hashim, he was counting down the hours until he would be free from the Ringmaster. A sadistic taskmaster, who has enslaved every creature under him. No matter if it's against the law or not. But just as he thought his time was up, his original conjurer sold him for good to the Ringmaster. On top of that, the one man/being that he has finally found a connection with, has shown back up and Hashim is very nervous. Their last meeting didn't go so well. While Hashim wishes to spend his days wrapped in Smith's arms. He knows he cannot. One, for being the slave. Two, because he doesn't know if Smith would ever forgive him. But Fate has intervened and they have met again. Smith eventually finds out what's really going on when his company is taking over the grounds where Hashim is indentured. And Smith is furious. He refused to allow Hashim or the others to be slaves anymore and is coming up with a plan to free them all. Hashim just hopes Smith's plans work or he will be enslaved forever.
Hot hot hot! Sizzling hot! Chemistry is off the chains with two and with them both being of fire nature, they feed the flames every time the simply kiss. Of course, any kiss between those two is never simple. And it took a bit for them to get back on even ground. Hashim had to fully explain what was going on and why he had to leave before. He was just trying to save everyone the best he knew how. And now it was Smith's turn. I loved these guys. Even with all the crap they had been through and we're going through, they still thought of the others.
Especially sweet Rion. Who was big as can be with a heart just as large. I think I loved him best. Don't get me wrong. I love almost all the characters. But Rion was so special. People were scared of him because he was so big and looked like a monster. But he would never hurt anyone. Not a fly. And he was so special. The way he takes care of plants and talks to them. Oh. Just melted my heart. Just a giant teddy bear. I'm such a sucker for the big softies. *Sighs* I can't help it.
This was such a good book. I'm so glad I got to read. The characters were fun and sweet. And I love paranormal stuff. And this was loaded of beings of all kinds. Good and bad.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐
Performance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐⭐️
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐⭐

Devouring Flame is the second book in the Enchanted Occasions series. I have not read or listened to the first book, but the story was told in such a way that I understood all the essentials well.
I like the humorous writing style of E.J.Russell. And I loved the characters in this book. Smith and Hashim met in the first volume, but here we learn more about their history. And their circumstances have changed as well, with Hashim facing a bleak future. I really liked both the world building and the story structure. The plot was engagingly told, it was exciting and also funny. It was heartwarming to witness how their relationship strengthened and how they supported each other. However, I also enjoyed the secondary characters immensely and they definitely added to this book.
Kirt Graves did an absolutely fantastic job. I love how he gives unique voices to the characters, bringing the book to life. I highly recommend the audiobook, it's fun to listen to Kirt Graves!

One night of immense passion brought Smith and Hashim together and neither knew the other's heart broke when it ended. Misunderstandings, location, hurt feelings and a small issue of indentured servitude stand between them. Enchanted Occasions' newest client coincidentally bridges one of the gaps but they'll have to do the rest of the work if they hope to bridge the rest of the chasm that separates them. Along the way they'll make and deepen other friendships, witness a brawl of epic proportions, facilitate an unconventional vampire feast, and maybe find the love that was always meant to be theirs.

The connection between Smith and Hashim was intimated in Nudging Fate and learning exactly what separated them was both enlightening and very sad. Instead of dwelling on the hurt, betrayal, and anger they decided that communication and making up for lost time was the better way to move forward. I truly loved that kind of maturity and was so glad that we didn't get a case of never-ending back and forth angsting. Giving us two men who learned what kept them apart and then fought to eradicate the barriers was refreshing and, in this story, never a dull moment. Going from super sexy to sweet and tender gave me what I was hoping for between these males.

In terms of fighting for a future together, Smith was the one who made it all come together. He was strong, determined, intelligent, and led with his heart. The way he was eager to learn and to fix was stunning because he went about it in a way that wasn't overkill and he didn't lose sight of who and what was most important. Hashim was slightly different. His genesis and entire existence has beaten him down so he played a bit heavy on the fatalistic side of the equation. When push came to shove, though, he stood up for himself as much as possible and used his talents to unknowingly carve a place for himself in the Enchanted Occasions family and Smith's heart.

I'm a huge fan of this series continuation. The craziness at the end was a bit too chaotic to follow at times, but the conclusion was fitting for the characters and the story. There are a few more characters that I'm incredibly interested in and am eager to see if the next book is as good as or better than this one. If it doesn't continue, I'll be content, but I will definitely wish for more from this zany, entertaining world.

Having not read the first book, there were definitely references I didn't really understand and characters that I felt like I was supposed know. While this did work as a standalone, I think you'll probably enjoy it that much more if the series is read in order.

That being said, I did like it. It was fun, didn't take itself too seriously, and had some thoughtful and fresh fantasy settings and characters. I thought the main couple reconciled a bit too quick, but I was able to more or less forgive that because I was having a good time. I liked both of the main characters. Smith's "I get stuff done" attitude was nice to read about and made him likeable, and while Hashim was a bit softer, he still had personality. A nice effort from E.J. Russell.

I liked this one so much better than the first. From marriage to escaping slavery. I liked how hot and adorable Smith and Hashim were together. The ringmaster was scum and the truth about Rion, just made him that much more horrid. I liked Mikos, he seems like a cool boss. A lot more going on and this time EO is causing trouble on purpose. Favourite character is still Chef.

The magic here works like a dream—the sort you relate over breakfast: "but he's got these cuffs, and there was a bargain, but it wasn't really one, and then the vampires have a party and they can eat food but only once a century and—no, the dream didn't say why—and there's an events management company..."

Say it after me: the best books about magic lay down the simple rules at the beginning, and don't pull new ones of the wizard's hat just to solve the plot.

Messy and unconvincing.

'Devouring Flame' (Enchanted Occasions, #2)
written by E.J. Russell, (Audible) narrated by Kirt Graves

This second book in this series is just as delightful as the first! Maybe even more! Where else are you going to run into a giant Minotaur sitting at a picnic table with his 'My Little Pony' lunchbox? (omg! hilarious!)

But, there are some intense and sad parts too, like a certain wizard/mage? who is greedy and controlling and who misuses a lot of the lesser demon population, forcing them to be slaves, controlling them through some kind of penalty system to obey him and whoever else they were sold to, punishing them when they don't obey, through the use of electrical-magical controlled handcuffs disguised as gold arm cuffs/bracelets, one fastened on each wrist over each individual's pulse-points.

'Enchanted Occasions' boss, Micos explaining their new job to his staff,
"In addition, the Feast Day will include a costume ball from 10:00 pm until midnight. The Vampires apparently like to Cos-Play as... themselves. They're really excited this year to dress up as different versions of how Humans portray Vampires in books, TV shows, and films!"
(approximate quote; I can't look it up, as listening to audiobook)

This story is part of the series featuring characters from 'Enchanted Occasions', and set in one of several Interstitial realms, which are sort of "space pockets" between where the various realities intersect and where magic and technology BOTH work. There are other forces at work here as well, although most beings who live in them or work in them have no clue as to how these spaces operate on a deeper level.

I'm so glad the author is continuing this series because the world-building is superb! It just continues to engage my interest as bit by bit we are treated to yet more info on exactly how things operate in here. Or are supposed to...

To top the imminent chaos of a Vampire Costume Ball & Feast, which only happens once every 100 years during which all Vampires can actually consume real cooked food and drink, and not just drink blood, we now are privy to some dark magic and underhanded machinations and side deals involving a callous and unscrupulous Ringmaster whose intent is making as much gold as he can by selling certain beings into secret indentured work for other loathsome creatures, basically an illegal slave trade.

Our two main MCs are a half-human-half fire-demon, Smith, who works for 'Enchanted Occasions', the venue planners organizing this particular fête for the Vampire contingent, and Hasheem, an infrit (spelling?) a fire-being who was indentured temporarily to the Ringmaster to pay off a certain debt and after he's worked off this debt, he is supposed to be returned to his family...if they want him, that is.

Guess what? Big surprises are in store for both of our MCs, who are also smokin' up the sheets together any chance they can get away from the crowds and find some privacy. I love their interactions; they are so good together, balancing each other's fire energy.

If you're jumping in cold by starting with this second book? You'd do well to go read the first book in this series first, as this and all subsequent books are tied into each other, with various characters weaving in and out of all these connecting storylines.

The more of this series I read, the more I appreciate the deft way that the author continues to world-build and tie people (and other beings) and places together through these magical realm interfaces.

~~~~~《Trigger Warning》~~~~~~~~~~
There are some really violent interactions between some factions of the Vampires, including a "pay-to-hunt-and-kill" of a certain rare being, an illegal deal brokered by the black-market-dealing Ringmaster. Liken it to humans "sport hunting" for fun and to acquire a "trophy animal". But this beast just happens to be friends with our two main characters.
So the situations in this storyline progress from mildly annoying for the event planners, to a big Vampire food fight, to a crazed Berserker chef..."Hasheem!" chef bellowed, loud enough to shake dust from the rafters, "Why are there fucking vampires puking in my walk-in fridge?!"
...and so forth...to a ginormous blowup involving the whole venue!
Meanwhile, we have our heated-up MCs trysting whenever & wherever they can get a few moments together, as both realize from their first face-to-face meet (previous book) that this is no ordinary hook-up, this is life-changing for both of them, especially since they may never see each other again after this convention is over. Plus, they have a personal quest to complete ASAP!
Great ending, although it's not exactly a tying up the loose ends kind of ending but more of a slide into the next part of this tale, although there are certain issues that DO get resolved.
(and I have a great big grin on my face)
Can't wait to read the next books in this series!
Two thumbs up! 👍👍
I loved Devouring Flame by E.J. Russell. It’s the thirty-fifth book in the Dreamspun Beyond series and the second book in the Enchanted Occasions series. I love how unique this book is and the world that the author had made. I love that there’s a company out there the paranormal community can hire to plan their special occasions. In this book, Enchanted Occasions Event Planning is hired to cater a huge feast for a convention of vampires for their one day out of the century they can consume something other than blood. But like in the first book, Nudging Fate, things do not go as smoothly as they should.
Smith is a half-demon tech specialist for Enchanted Occasions Event Planning. As a half-demon, he has an inner flame that has to be feed to keep him alive. If the flame goes out, then he will die also. If he were a full demon then he would be able to recharge it himself, but his human genes keep him from being able to do that, and so he needs to consume severely charred meat to keep his flame alive. There was one other way to keep his flame alive, and that is being with another fire demon or ifrit. He’s only had one night with an Ifrit named Hashim of the Windrider clan that he met during an Enchanted Occasions event. On their one literally smoldering night together, Smith revealed his true name—a demon’s greatest vulnerability. When Hashim didn’t return the favor, then split the next morning with no word, the message was received, loud and clear—thanks but no, thanks. While cutting through the Interstices—the post-creation gap between realms—Smith spies the person he yearns for daily but dreads seeing again, Hashim.
Although Hashim had burned to return Smith’s trust during their one night together, it was impossible. The wizard who conjured him holds his true name in secret, and unless Hashim discovers it, he’ll never be free, as Smith finds out when he sees him performing a fire dance at the interstices Las Vegas Carnival. With their attraction sparked once more, the two unite to search for Hashim’s hidden name, but if they fail, Hashim will be doomed to eternal slavery, and their reignited love will collapse in the ashes. Luckily Smith is the guy who gets stuff done, and Hashim is never afraid to heat things up.
To make things even more complicated, they have to contend with a convention full of food-crazed vampires on the one day out of the century they can consume something other than blood, a Ringmaster, and finding out who’s hunting and trying to kill Hashim’s friend Rion, a Minotaur and fellow carnival attraction.
I loved Rion. He was huge and scary looking and didn’t have any friends but Hashim, but he was the most innocent and friendly Minotaur. I loved getting to know him and hope that he gets his own book in the future.
If you read the first book in the series, Nudging Fate, and enjoyed it, I recommend reading this book, Devouring Flame. I enjoyed it just as much as the first one.
🎧 Audiobook Review
Story ♥️♥️♥️
Narration ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Overall ♥️♥️♥️💕
Sometimes an awesome author can bring mediocre storytelling into the reading/listening mix. This is what is happening with this particular series by E. J. Russell. I don't know but I kept wondering if I will get sucked in the way ❤️"Fae out of water"❤️ or ❤️"Supernatural Selection"❤️ series did for me. But, nope, this was an okayish attempt to an otherwise promising plot.
The world building is cool, especially when you have so many paranormal beings in the mix and I really liked the blend of pnr and human world in the carnival culture of Vegas😏. But, the romance was meh😑, there is not much of a chemistry between the couple, regardless how much physical attraction they felt for each other. The lovely part, a good listen with a commendable narration by Kirt Graves, unfortunately even he cannot fill the in the gaps of mediocre romance😒.
MC1 Smith, a computer nerd and half demon, has been nursing a sort of broken heart from a former perspective consort candidate, when his agency gets tasked with a new contract of entertaining Vampires. Smith prefers to work behind the scenes, and was super reluctant to go onsite, especially when the chosen venue is none other than the Carnival grounds in Vegas where the man who betrayed him works. What he wasn't expecting we as Hashim is state of servitude.
MC2 Hashim, a conjured Ifrit, has been living with guilt and self loathing since his one night of passion with Smith. He has been feeling guilty since his betrayal to Smith, and after encountering him at the carnival grounds again, he's too reluctant to show Smith, the real reason of his betrayal. What he's looking for is a chance at freedom. Will Hashim get it, and is Smith going to get disgusted with Hashim's life as a slave.
The story builds-ups quiet well, but losses the romance with too many goings on with several other characters and there are many. I really adored the tortured, softie Rion, the menetor. The Enchanted occasions staff also had some interesting support cast. But, the romance part somehow got lost with many things happening at once, like the entertainment planning discussion for the Vampires🙄.
Kirt Graves is one of the best narrators that I enjoy listening to and admire. But if the storytelling is lacking substance, a narrator can't do much to bump up the listening pleasure. Still, Kirt has given lovely voices to both the MCs and the support cast. He also handles emotional scenes with great care and portrayal of compassion for the characters. It's a good listen, but needs a better storyline.
I love EJ Russell. Her books are always such FUN! And this one is no different. In book 2 of the Enchanted Occasions series we get to learn more about half demon Smith and the ifrit, Hashim, of the Windrider clan, erstwhile suitor of Prince Reyner of Faerie.
One passion filled night during the prince's courtship contest and both Hashim and Smith fall head over heels for each other, although neither knows how the other feels. The problem is Hashim is a bound ifrit and he failed to do what his master wanted him to do - steal the soul of the prince. So Hashim is punished with servitude at the Twilight Carnival, a seedy little carnie located in the Vegas Interstices and is eventually sold to the Carnie master by his former master - made a slave for eternity to the Ringmaster.
Fate reunites Smith and Hashim as Enchanted Occasions rents out the carnival for a convention full of food-crazed vampires on the one day out of the century they can consume something other than blood. Smith and Hashim stumble across a sinister set of accidents that have taken place in the carnival, and find out the Ringmaster has been playing fast and loose with the lives of those unfortunates who were indentured to him, lining his pockets with gold by selling both the lives and the deaths of those he owned.
Working together, Smith and Hashim fight to bring down the Ringmaster and free Hashim from his slavery by finding the ifrit his true name. All while dealing with a convention of crazy vampires with weird fetishes, a goblin berserker chef on the verge of going beserk, and trying not to destroy the interstices but overload it just enough to liberate all the unfortunate souls trapped there. And maybe, just maybe, get a happy ending of their own.
This was a brilliantly written book, and a great sequel to Nudging Fate. Definitely recommend!
5 Stars!
I am the first to admit that I have a thing for antiheroes, from Spike (BtVS) to Loki (Marvel, Thor), there's just something about them that just calls to me. We met Hamish in book 1 of the series, Nudging Fate, and while he's not exactly a villain, neither was he a hero. I was still interested in getting to know him better and that's exactly what I got in Devouring Flame.
And guess what? Surprise, surprise, I absolutely loved Hamish! My heart broke for him, for everything he had to endure after he was conjured and even more after he left Smith after their night together and ended up indentured to that awful Ringmaster. *cuddles Hamish* And OMG, just how adorable was he with Rion? *melts all over the place* And yes, Smith wasn't that bad either. He was understandably hurt after what he shared with Hamish and at least he let Hamish explain why he acted like he did. Of course, it didn't hurt that they were really hot together. *fans self*
Rion was lovely, and sweet and naive and I was surprised by Mikos revelation about him in the end. Still, he was one of my favorite characters in this book and I hope we see him again in the future. And it was great catching up with Brooke and learning that Andy and Con were doing so well.
This book was fantastic and I love this 'verse that EJ Russell has created, not that I'm surprised, I've said it before and I'll say it again, she's one of my favorite Urban Fantasy authors. The story started a bit slow, but once it picked pace, wow, I couldn't put it down. I was completely spellbound by the characters and the plot and very invested in what would happen. I can't recommend this book enough!
This story follows the Enchanted Occasions staff as they work at a new event and also deal with an aside from the last. During the first book Smith, the fire demon Tech Guru, had something go on with one of the potential consorts, an ifrit named Hashim. When the two accidentally meet again in the Vegas interstices it is quickly clear that Smith fell for Hashim and gave over his true name- but Hashim did not reciprocate, essentially saying he was not interested. But then how did Hashim end up working in the sleazy Vegas interstices? Soon the two become entangled again and everything comes to light.
Smith and Hashim were a perfect complement. Smith is only half fire demon and needs a constant diet of charred or flamed food to keep his own flame banked. Hashim as an ifrit can't ever be with anyone for fear of his fire consuming the other person. Together they have perfect give and take. Once they are able to see a relationship is possible they also get to work together, where they also have their own skills that are in complement. They were a great couple you couldn't help but root for.
The event this time was just as fascinating as the last and again totally unique. Between the sketchy goings on in the Carnival and the crazy Vampire conference with 24hour feeding (of actual food) it was a mixture of mildly hilarious and tensely active. Can't wait to see what other events Enchanted Occasions finds itself involved in as the stories simply can't be beat!
I loved this story! I thought it was fantastic! Great world building. I didn't read the first book, but the story was told in such a way that I wasn't lost or confused. I absolutely loved the characters! Smith and Hashim have history that took place in the first book, but it is in this one that it really flourishes as misunderstandings that separated them and wedged them apart are explained. There are quite the obstacles standing in the way of these two getting their happy ending. But the journey getting there was fun, exciting, suspenseful, dangerous, and mysterious. It was heartwarming and sweet to see their bond strengthen and grow over the course of the book through their support and trust in each other.
There is a wonderful cast of supporting characters- all unique in personality and species- that make things both interesting and captivating. I must say my two favorite supporting characters are sweet, innocent, gentle minotaur Rion, and the feisty, scary chef who I found hilarious and intriguing.
I didn't read this book, but listened to the audiobook. Kirt Graves was the narrator and I thought he did a fantastic job with the different characters' unique voices and accents. At times I forgot I was listening to just one man the whole time. I am definitely interested in hearing more of his narrations!
An excellent read that I highly recommend- in audiobook too! I couldn't stop listening. I can't wait for the next book in this series! 5 stars.
Not a standalone; read book 1
We catch up with Smith from book one, chef extraordinaire and a temper to match, a well-developed character, but not someone you would want to meet anytime soon.
We also meet Hashim, who disappeared quickly from the gathering in book one. Great story, full of everything, violence, flirting, crimes against individuals who didn't deserve it and the sweetest characters.
The book is full of great characters, not just the two main ones, but countless sides, some of whom will get their own stories, I'm sure.
The main world-building is excellent, set between earth and the nine realms. Seriously you can imagine walking amongst these creatures and not batting an eyelid.
Great imagination and is exceptionally well written. Highly recommend.
The narration was on point, and Kirt Graves does enough voices that you always know which character is talking. I did slightly increase the speed, which is typical for me.
