I rarely read non-fiction. My father was all praise for this book. So I started on this. I should say it really impressed me. It took a few days of slow reading to become interesting because of two reasons. Firstly, the book is in Telugu and in that the sentence formation and vocabulary is somewhat old. Secondly, the descriptions of the people, their costumes etc got a little boring. Once I got used to these, I could read quicker.
This is a novelized biography of The Great Khan. He is known for his ruthlessness, mass murders and massacres. But nothing is purely bad. There is always an angle to it. I wanted to know his 'side' of the story. I admit that circumstances changed him to some extent but it seemed to me that world conquest was the main motive behind what he did rather than betterment of human life as the author claims. Took out one star for this biased writing.
The author did his research before writing this. The nomadic tribes of Mongolia, their ways of living, their sense of justice are very different from our present ones. They only make sense when viewed against the background of the environment they live in. The nature around them is harsh. Scarcity of food for months, extreme weather conditions keep them always on the move. In such circumstances, warring against other tribes and looting their resources doesn't seem as barbaric as it seemed when first heard of. When a war is won, we think of only the victorious and defeated rulers. This book showcases the plight of the common people who are now the spoils of the war. How their loyalties waver. What it is to the people when the authority over them changes hands. These are some of the many practical things this book writes about.
The political cunning of Genghis Khan.
When I first read about Genghis Khan, the writings which superficially touch upon the subject, it conveyed to me somehow just the brute strength of the massive armies in conquest of the world. Now when I think of this, it doesn't seem correct. The tribe of Genghis Khan was not so big when their conquest started. Even if it was that big, just brute strength does not win wars. Genghis Khan was a good politician, strategist and a diplomat. India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru says - "Genghis Khan is my hero"
