15 books50 followersA vida deste personagem está repleta de informações contraditórias e rumores. Tanto a data como o seu nascimento não são claros. Uns dizem que nasceu num gueto suburbano de Lisboa, enquanto outros a localizam a leste da Rússia, na cidade de Vladivostok, algures na década de 60.
Segundo boatos, trabalhou com a administração Reagan, no início dos anos 80, com o objetivo de enfraquecer a economia soviética, embora também se diga que trabalhou no KGB como espía no mundo ocidental.
A final dos 80 foi localizado em Seattle, como produtor de música grunge com o pseudônimo de Johnny de Nunes.
Durante uma década não se soube o seu paradeiro e no início do século, é encontrado como empresário e comerciante de burcas entre as montanhas do Paquistão e Afeganistão com o nome de Mustafa de Nunes. Confrontos entre os talibãs e as tropas norte-americanas fizeram que voltasse a desaparecer durante um período.
Atualmente, existem rumorejos que se converteu num ermitão e vive nos bosques Gipuzkoanos do País Basco, lendo e escrevendo. No entanto, outros alegam que está no interior do Brasil cantando forró com o nome de Marcogekson de Nunes.

Já há bastante tempo que não me empolgava tanto a ler um livro.
O livro começa devagar, caracterizando o personagem principal e as etapas do Caminho Santiago. Tal como o nome do livro indica há uma historia de amor. Gostei da maneira como esta retratada a atração, o medo da rejeição, o apaixonar-se, o desejo de mais. Além disso, o autor utiliza nos diálogos o português de Portugal e o do Brasil e que fica muito realista. São estes detalhes que fazem a diferença e mostram que há livros que não podem ser traduzidos, este é um deles, sempre vai perder.
E de repetente, há um golpe tão grande na historia que ficamos atarantados. Do nada, levamos uma chapada tão grande que parece que entramos noutra historia. não quero fazer spoiler, mas adorei a segunda parte, a parte do medo. Esta muito bem escrita, realista e perturbadora.
Um dos melhores livros que li ultimamente.

A superb novel...
LOVE AND FEAR ON THE SANTIAGO PATH is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive psychological thriller by Portuguese novelist Gonçalo J. Nunes Dias. I’m a big fan of this author after having read some of his previous books, MANUAL FOR MURDER and THE GOOD DICTATOR series.
The book description gives only a sneak preview: ‘A young man decides to do the Santiago Path alone. There he meets Valeria, a young Brazilian who, after a bad break-up, is eager to start a new life. The two meet each other, walk together and end up falling in love. As they begin making plans for their future, however something unbelievable happens in the middle of the Path and they’ll have to fight, not only for their relationship but also for their lives.’
This was another fascinating and captivating read that had me engaged from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this thrilling page turner that will take the reader on a truly spellbinding journey.
‘Only for readers who like a good twist and strong emotions.’ Highly Recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

A pilgrimage into growth
Portuguese born Gonçalo J. Nunes Dias graduated in Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco. He lives today in the Basque Country, Spain and on his social media listing addresses himself and an author, ornithologist and a cork tree expert! His books to date -THE GOOD DICTATOR Trilogy. MAMUEL FOR A MURDER , and now LOVE AND FEAR ON THE SANTIAGO PATH. The translation from the Portuguese is by Rachel Thomas.
Of note, the Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St James, is a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in Galicia, Spain – a form of spiritual path or retreat for spiritual growth. Gonçalo opens his novel with a poignant Preface: ‘My psychologist diagnosed me with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and encouraged me to let out my feelings as this would help ease my pain about recent events. That is why I have started to write this short story about what has happened to me recently, while I sit waiting, in this enormous airport, to board the plane on a flight that will take nine hours to get me to my next destination. One of the symptoms of PTSD is distressing, recurring and involuntary flashbacks of a traumatic event and, I must confess, my dear readers, that I frequently see that black pick-up truck approaching, its tinted windows, and the swift noise of the side door opening… One fine day, completely by chance, I came across a documentary about the Camino de Santiago on television and the camaraderie amongst the pilgrims, the different nationalities of the walkers the numerous hostels set up to welcome them, the landscapes and the challenge of making it to the final destination…yes this was what I was looking for…’ And with sensitive introduction we meet Ricardo, the primary character of the story.
Using the format of a mental diary/journal Gonçalo uses his inimitable lyrical style to convey not only the visual pleasures of Ricardo’s journey, but also the myriad permutations of psychological challenges that make this story a thriller. He condenses the plot as follows – ‘A young man decides to do the Santiago Path alone. There he meets Valeria, a young Brazilian who, after a bad break-up, is eager to start a new life. The two meet each other, walk together and end up falling in love. As they begin making plans for their future, however something unbelievable happens in the middle of the Path and they’ll have to fight, not only for their relationship but also for their lives.’
The juxtaposition of a new romance with the dire challenges the couple faces makes for a superb novel. Said once, say again, Gonçalo J. Nunes Dias – learn how to pronounce it and remember it as a writer who is likely to become a controversial seer!

Este livro lê-se num ápice!
É muito fácil sentir empatia pelo personagem principal, ele é honesto e tenta ser um ser humano melhor reconhecendo as suas próprias fragilidades mas também as suas forças.
Depois a descrição do Caminho de São Tiago bem como as pessoas que o povoam são encantadoras e dá vontade de partir à aventura....
Em todo o caso a leitura do livro por si só já é uma aventura com surpresas inesperadas.
O livro está bem escrito e o personagem principal bem desenvolvido.
Recomendo!!

Gostei muito deste livro. A escrita é excepcional e cheia de surpresas. Admirei particularmente o humor com que o autor chamou os seus leitores, que indicado a sua confiança como contador de histórias.
No início parece que é uma história simples de amor num lugar romântico e exótico no famoso Caminho Santiago, e se apenas era isso, eu ficava satisfeito, porque cada personagem é único e o narrador é uma simpática mistura de preocupações, neuroticos, e charme. Na medida do livro a história de repente torna-se numa aventura de mistério. Ao início senti que era muito estranho, mas a excelente escrita prendou-me. O nosso pobre Ricardo encontra os vilões mais malignos, mais perigosos do mundo e precisa de se transformar no herói. Uma guerra das armas então vira-se numa batalha psicológica consigo mesmo que leva o leitor a um fim esperançoso.
O meu único desapontamento é que a personagem da Valeria não é nem muito profunda, nem forte, comparado com outros personagens. Embora se virmos através dos olhos do Ricardo, esta belissima, perfeitamente agradável e encantadora rapariga seria melhor se tivesse pelo menos uma falha interessante. Mas além disto, gostei totalmente deste bom livro.

Me ha ENCANTADO!
Desde el primer momento me enganchó y no podía dejar de leerlo. Como peregrina habitual, me sentí muy identificada con la primera parte del libro, me hizo soñar con volver y viajar a esos momentos tan especiales que se viven allí.
Por la sinopsis ya estaba preparada para algo diferente y así fue. Me ha parecido una novela ágil emocionante con giros inesperados, tal y como nos tiene acostumbrado su autor. Escrito de una manera muy ingeniosa. Me gusta mucho la manera de narrarlo e interesante la construcción y del personaje principal. Verdaderamente MUY RECOMENDABLE! Sorprendente

Excellent Story. This really was a very enjoyable read. I was already a fan or Gonçalo JN Dias writing after reading Manual For Murder and The Good Dictator 1 & 2, which are also a fabulous books. I love the characters in this story, and I got quite a surprise which I wasn’t expecting. I had many enjoyable hours of entertainment in reading this, and now I’d love to see the Santiago Path.
Ricardo Casagrande wasn’t t lucky when it came to women, as his relationships didn’t last very long. He just didn’t feel he had met the right girl so far, not that it bothered him too much as he had been concentrating on saving up to go on a trip to the Santiago Path. Ricardo didn’t mind his own company, however it would be nice on this trip if he could make a few friends. He’s quite taken with a female hiker named Valeria, although he knows the Brazilian beauty is way out of his league. With over 20km’s to walk everyday some of the pilgrims might find the experience a lot harder and scarier than they first expected. Do yourself a favour and read this story, you won’t be disappointed. 5/5 Star Rating.

Foi interessante leer. As vezes foi um poço confusão. Não segui todo isso aconteceu, mas pensei foi envolvente. Pensei um pouco de diálogo foi divertido, mas boa.
