Cassandra has known nothing but suffering and slavery for her whole life. Unjustly condemned to death, she was ready to leave this Hell and expire her last breath in the arena.
But destiny had other plans for her, and instead of being killed, she was offered as a tribute to the merciless Kairen, the Dragon Prince, also known as the Empire's God of War. What will happen now that she is trapped in his den, at his mercy...?
*It’s disappointing to see bad reviews criticizing the Author’s valid decision to choose how they want to publish their writing/stories, as opposed to a review of the actual story they haven’t read. So here’s my take on it as someone who has actually read the book. I said what I said.*
A beautifully created world of dragons, magic, and the best and worst of humanity. From desert landscapes to snow, it has it all. Cassandra, a strong female MC who succeeds against the incredible odds against her with intelligence and grace. Kairen, a strong male MC who evolves from barely human, more dragon, War God to an actual man with emotional depth and passion.
So many twists and turns in the plots, adding a bit of mystery to keep you guessing. Great supporting characters who are wonderfully written and developed. And the dragons! So awesome. Great use of magic/mystical elements when needed. Heat and romance included. Everyone seems to have their own growth and journey and it leaves you satisfied.
Beautiful descriptions; a perfect balance of descriptive text and dialogue.
I’m sad it’s over, it was a long journey anticipating updates, but I’m glad to have been able to experience it. I hope it gets published, it deserves the hype. I want this on my shelves urgently. I love it.
Would rate higher if I could finish. So the author has to decided to publish her book on an app called “AnyStories”...she says “a girls gotta eat”. Well girl so do I ! The way the app is set up you buy coins to pay for chapters, by the time it’s all said and done the book ends up costing oh about $25-$30! Uh no. The only book I might even be tempted to pay that for might be Kresley Coles next installment of Immortals After Dark series either “Munroe” or “Furies” book . You hear that Kresley?! 😢 Anyway there are so many good authors self publishing on affordable platforms so what’s the deal?! If anyone knows how to purchase this book at an affordable price please share. If not I’m only giving two stars, book starts off interesting, not great but good enough it had me hooked enough that I would have bought it at a reasonable price.
I started it free but didn't have the time to finish it and don't have the money for finishing it. That's a shame because it's a really good book with an amazing script. The characters have their owns personalities and that's an incredible how the main couple develop theirs relationships.
The idea looked interesting, even if a bit cliche so I decided to pay for the full novel. It’s fair, paper books are expensive and it could be worth it. Needless to say, I’ve rarely been that disappointed by a book.
The first few chapters are OK. Not the best but not the worst and captivating enough to want to read more. However, once you get past chapter 10, it starts falling down to... I don’t know where.
Kairen is supposed to be at war but the enemy is introduced and mentionnés in two/three sentences and that’s it. Cassandra was captured and enslaved yet instead of the apathy she was described with at the beginning, she miraculously recovers with no trauma except for scars.
Characters are barely developed or mentioned, they keep appearing but diseappear just as fast. The world the author introduces is limited to the Capital and the Dragon Empire but there is no background on the hows and whys, just a succession of easy and predictable events. For exemple, that visit at the slave market was... unnecessary to say the least, just a chance for the dashing prince to show off his power and that’s it. It’s mentioned once, so that the Emperor can get a bit of recognition by ... doing what exactly is still unclear. Prohibit slavery ? Introducing standard for servants ? It would have been a very interesting point to develop further but no, nothing.
The attempt at redemptions for the « villainous » Vheran is entirely useless, the appearance of the Water God is confusing, there is absolutely no timeline in between each action, everything seems to happen at the same time and let’s not talk about the smut...
Long story short, this novel feels rushed from start to finish. It’s predictable, there’s no character depth, no world development or barely. The timeline is completely absent, the univers is barely introduced. What a waste of words. The same result could have been achieved with far less and would have been of better quality.

Absolutely LOVE this book, It definitely keeps you on your toes! I love the story line, I 100% recommend reading this! If it were to ever get published I will be buying a copy!
DNF @ 29% - this book is 650 pages 😵💫😵💫 and the MCs have sex by 6%. And they are basically in love after that. The heroine goes from scared slave to confident “Queen” immediately… she’s a bit much. Everyone loves her immediately (men, women, children, dragons alike) and she has all the answers to fix all the problems in the kingdom 🙄 she’s the smartest person in every single situation. There’s some mild OW drama but even the OW immediately love the h and become her best friends. Add this silliness to the weird use of modern words and phrases in a world that feels very ancient in all other ways… and I just can’t keep going. It feels more like women’s literature than a romance, focusing more on the h rising above her slave status and saving everyone and less on the romance. The hero barely talks and feels more like a bobble-headed side-character than a true hero. I probably would have finished if it was under 300 pages but I can’t do 650 pages of this.

I loved it in the beginning but towards the end it got like a chew gum which is chewed for too long and turns tastless. Last ten chapters could have been easily complied to 5. So overall was an average read. It's a good plot and story but needs lots of editing.
Excellent writing and stimulating read BUT it is only available on pay for chapter apps. It has 131 chapters when the first 30 cost 5 so it would cost $25+. It is well worth paying for but not at that price.
i love love LOVE this book; I started reading it on wattpad around 90 chapters in and whenever she updated, i would leap for my phone. In fact, I'm pretty sure her book is what kept me on wattpad half the time since I'd just joined back then. Each chapter is so enticing and when I heard she was taking it off wattpad, i almost cried lmao but i highly recommend. From the steamy chapters, to the sweetest to the most dangerous, it will definitely keep you on your toes at all times. I'm hoping she publishes it because getting my hands on a copy would be a dream come true [ wattpad account - adorxme - for more deets ]
Giving 2 stars for originality, but that's all it gets.
This book was.. interesting. It seemed to still be in the editing stage; not meaning typos or misspelled words or usually even grammar, but the author Jenny got fixated on certain words and used them over and over. And OVER. I think the word 'actually' made its way into every other paragraph at least. Things that didn't require an 'actually' reaction, for example 'she actually walked down the stairs'. And 'literally' was thrown around quite a bit too. She'd get stuck on a certain description for awhile so I'd be reading the same words for 3 chapters straight. The Young Concubine did this, the Young Concubine did that, the Young Concubine felt this way, etc. The simplicity of the writing made me feel like a 12 year old had written it, but included sex.
Speaking of the sex, it was ABUNDANT in the first eighth of the book, then mostly non-existent. Which is fine that it petered out, it wasn't that good after the first few intimate moments. And all the sound effects, moaning and such, were way over the top. 'Aahh, ooh, ungh, oo, ahhhh'.
The book started off interesting enough, then dragged for awhile with unimportant events, then got interesting again, then dragged, and dragged, etc.
The main character Cassandra did have some decent growth throughout the book. She was a slave about to die, and embraced her death with no fear, which caught the attention of a Prince's dragon. Due to this, she was saved from the slave slaughter. Ok, so many questions. Why kill off dozens of slaves, especially ones still in good enough health to work? Seems extremely wasteful just for entertainment. I think the author was trying to portray just how little human life meant to the royalty, but it fell flat.
Cassandra becomes the Prince's concubine, his only concubine, lucky her! And as a slave and virgin she's terrified, who wouldn't be? That's how the author writes, by the way. I did think the author portrayed Cassandra well, as well as a 12 year old writing level could anyway. Over the course of the book, Cassandra and the Prince fall in love, and she loses a lot of her fear.
I did like the few times when she took initiative to help; even though these people enslaved her, she was still willing to help heal the soldiers with her knowledge of medicine. The chapters where she renovated the 'Red Room' into a working hospital were probably my favorite in the book.
About halfway to 2/3 through the book we finally learn the plot, which involves the Prince's older brother trying to take over as emperor. This prince is a true baddy, no grey area, no room for redemption, no character growth. He's portrayed as psychotic and rapes his own sister to have more offspring, kills his oldest brother and his father (the emperor)...
To wrap up, the entire book could have been reduced by several hundred pages, so much was irrelevant. The author (Jenny Fox) needed a good editor to clean up the unnecessary and over-used words. Jenny is French, so I don't know if her books were originally written in French and translated to English, or if she wrote them in English. Her small biography on Amazon suggests she might have written it in English. But regardless, she needs a better editor. This book could have been 5-star worthy if written better.
DNF 20%. Cannot bring myself to read this anymore. The writing style is not for me at all. It is written like a wattpad and is more “tell not show” rather than “show don’t tell”. I liked the idea of the story line, a slave and a prince, but it was just so poorly executed. It was just a bunch of the FMC stuttering away, about 1000 exclamation marks and the quote of “but I’m just a slave!”
That was entertaining even if a little bit too long. Just like a soap opera with too much drama to the end. This story was written for the subscription like a series and it is shown. Well, anyway, it was quite entertaining and kept me on the edge to know how all will end. Cassandra is a little bit of Mary Sue around in point of remembering all she has learned when she was 10 and always having another useful talent up her sleave. War God is great and his transformation during the story was very subtle but noticeable nevertheless.
This was and will probably always be my favorite web novel turned book. It’s full of so much backstabbing drama between all of the kings children and their concubines. What began as a joke or curiosity for Kairen with Cassandra turned into true love and it was beautiful. I loved all of the dragons!! Every single one. Especially Krai the very good boy. He was my favorite. So much happens, sooooooo much. In fact this book could easily have been split up into a duology or even a trilogy. But this was nice too. Rereading this in book format brought me so much joy.
You know a story is special when you’ve read more than 600 pages and still don’t want the story to end! That’s the feeling that I had when reading this story ‘The war God’s favorite’. The writer Jenny Fox is a completely new writer for me. I had never heard of her before, but another reader recommended this fantasy story in a readers’ group and when I read that this story reminded her of ‘The golden dynasty’ of Kristen Ashley, I was immediately intrigued because I love that story too! So I decided to read this story and OMG, I’m so glad I did because I loved every page!! I will definitely read more books by this author.
This fantasy story is about a country ruled by an emperor and his dragon. Like the emperor, his children are born with dragon’s blood, which make them stronger and heal them faster. The emperor has many concubines so he has many children, but the emperor only has six sons. And just like their father, each son has his own dragon, they share a deep bond with this dangerous animal. Of course, only one of the sons can succeed their father as emperor, which makes life in the palace very dangerous as some mothers (concubines) go to great lengths to ensure their son are chosen for that role. This story is about the third prince, Kairen and his black dragon Krai. He’s the most feared of all the brothers, a dangerous warrior. Unlike his brothers he has no concubines nor real interest in having one. But that all changes the day he and his dragon see 17 year old slave Cassandra in the arena. Cassandra knows that she will die in the arena that day, along with the other slaves brought there, and she’s at peace with that, she’s ready to end her terrible life as a slave. But to her great surprise (and that of everyone present) that doesn’t happen, a black dragon saves her and she’s now the property of Kairen, the third prince. That’s the beginning of a new and dangerous adventure for Cassandra, Kairen and his dragon Krai. Their lives and the lives of many others will never be the same from that day on.
I don’t want to tell too much about the story because I think it’s more fun to discover it for yourself. I will tell you that it contains royal intrigues, secrets and fighting but it’s also a story about courage, friendship, family and love. I must warn you, though: the dragons in this story have a tendency to eat people they don’t like. You have been warned! There were a few twists in the story that I didn’t expect. Although it was a long story, it wasn’t boring, on the contrary! I could hardly stop reading. There were some very emotional scenes in the story and some steamy sex scenes too. (The story ends with a HEA, if you wonder about that and no, there’s no cheating in it. The third prince has only eyes for Cassandra.)
I loved the main characters, both Cassandra and Kairen were great in their own way. Although the story was mostly told from Cassandra’s POV, we also got to know Kairen’s thoughts. Despite the fact that Cassandra had a horrible life as a slave, she retained her kind heart and nature. She was young but she was very mature for her age. She had a strong mind, was very intelligent, observant and she was a hard worker. She knew a lot about medical plants and medicines and had a deep connection with nature. Kairen was a warrior, he had no problem killing people for no reason but he was very protective of those he loved. He was also a stubborn, possessive, intelligent, grumpy and silent man. I liled that he respected Cassandra’s opinions and different views on life.
Kairen’s dragon Krai was such a special character. Just like Kairen, he was in love with Cassandra, he acted like a lovesick puppy around her (very cute!) but he was also a very protective and dangerous bodyguard. I really loved the interaction between him and Cassandra and Kairen. Both Kairen and his dragon wanted Cassandra’s attention all the time. That resulted in some funny scenes.
The secondary characters were also very interesting. There was Kairen’s mother Kareen, a concubine she was very intelligent and protective of her children and Kairen’s sister Shareen, unlike the other princesses, she had a very strong character. She was intelligent, fought like a warrior and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind to her brothers and her father, the emperor. Cassandra’s younger sister Missandra was also an interesting character, she was sneaky and more energetic then her older sister. It was beautiful to see the love between them, even though they grew up apart in different circumstances.
I also really liked some of the other characters and hated some (because they did really mean things) but the one I had mixed feelings about was the emperor. He wasn’t a bad man, he was kind to Cassandra and I really believe that he loved his concubine Kareen. He made some good decisions in the end but I also think it was partly his fault that some things went so wrong. He made some bad decisions with his love life and family.
At the end, we got a few epilogues, so we could see how everyone was doing in the future and I really loved that!!
‘The war god’s favorite’ is a wonderful fantasy story!
Will update when I finish but this book is appalling to say the least. Almost immediately the 'war god' is sexually touching our 17 MC in a way she clearly doesn't like and isn't ready for. I've only just begun this book and almost everytime he touches her sexually she says no or to stop but he doesn't listen. There is a weird incest undertone between Kairen and his sister. And they both behave creepily to our MC by forcing her to undress and get changed Infront of them and then touching her while she is uncomfortable in the situation. Mind you he doesn't even ask her name till pages after the touching and then begins touching her more. The author could've easily aged up our MC. There is no need for her to be 17. This book has serious consent and moral issues and it concerns me no one is talking about it.
So I started this for a simple smut read and got HOOKED! It was advertised and I read the free chapters and had to continue. It’s much more than a smut read, while yes it’s obviously a spicy read it has a really good story and world. I wish I could of just purchased it on kindle or a full ebook instead of through the app because I know it worked out to be pretty expensive even with trying to bank bonus coins. I plan on reading the sequel but I want to wait until it’s finished so I can purchase the entire book on the app unless the author decides to have them for sale else where so I can read on my kindle!
So Uh Jenny Fox, can you make it so your finished books can be read on e-readers please?! 😁 I also know the paperback should be out soon? Maybe? 🤷🏻♀️
I have such mixed feelings about this book. The story & characters are wonderful. The relationship between the War God (the Third Prince) and the Slave Woman his dragon saves is very touching. There are a lot of solid supporting characters as well which I enjoyed- the Emperor, the other Princes, the Princesses, the Concubines, the Servants & more. BUT this book is only available to read on the AnyStories app. I was enjoying the book so much by Chapter 6 that I paid the $20+ required to read the entire book. I know that’s more than today’s going rate for an on-line book, but I am an avid reader & once in awhile I don’t mind spending a bit more for a book. Unfortunately about halfway through the book someone stopped checking grammar and spelling mistakes. And it’s bad. There had been a few throughout but the last half of the book is so bad I found myself very frustrated & disheartened- having to reread sentences just to make sure I knew what was happening. The wrong names & pronouns were used constantly, making it a struggle to finish. So although I loved the story, I hated the book. There is a sequel, but as the author ended this book in a good place I’m not reading it. Not sure if I could read anymore books from this author?!?
I'm DNF-ing, Not even halfway through the book and it took such a hard turn it is unreadable tedious. I was so onboard at the start, it was very promising to becoming a favorite and then as soon as the pregnancy happens it completely changes.
I thought it was gonna be about the FMC winning over the people at the onyx house making a home there, then even better, I thought it was gonna be her building up a healers unit at the military base and earning respect amongst the prince's men. I'm a sucker for a tale about a healer proving their worth and falling in love while doing it but was this that story? nope.
Instead this 17 year old yes, 17 year old, the author makes sure that we know she's 17 gets pregnant and that's all this story revolves around after that point. How pregnant she is, and how young she is and how people are gonna try to kill her/the baby. two stars because the beginning was promising of a better shorter story but I'm not investing more time into this when they're already in love and getting married and pregnant with no sign that any of the aspects that I liked becoming relevant again.
*why can't authors make the leads in their adult romances 20 and up? like, why does she need to be a teenager?
Okay Fellow Readers this is a transparent post. I’ve given this book 2 stars because I couldn’t finish it. Here’s why:
The author originally published on WattPad however I wasn’t able to read it while there. If you’d like to read the first few chapters for free, you can head there to get hooked. She got me. She pulled me in and promised a good story. I did pay to read on the AnyStories app.
The character development was decent. However, I tend not to read romances with under aged women. Because I didn’t know her age until a few chapters in I was like, “okay, she should be about to turn 18 and I can’t imagine the author would do a large gap.” I was wrong.
I feel like if the heroine (and her sister) were older the story would make more sense. You wouldn’t have to try to understand how she knows such technical terms seeing as her medicinal education stopped somewhere between 7-9. I say somewhere because the story changed a few times. I also felt that this should have been two books minimum.
I won’t say too much more but if you have a question please let me know. I will answer to the best of my ability with the 90 chapters I was able to finish before I gave up.
DNF. Really couldn't get into this story, despite wanting to. Managed to get to about 250 pages in, and estimated that every 10-15 pages I was hit by a sex scene. There was literally no plot, the character development was lackluster and everything just felt rushed. The characters had barely been together for a day, before the so called "war god" was all over the poor slave (who was barely 18), despite how he'd killed several previous concubines because he had zero interest in women. By day 3 they'd already had sex, and the female lead was blind by "love" (or really lust).
The storyline was predictable and honestly everything just felt annoying. By the time I'd hit the 10th sex scene I was physically rolling my eyes and skimming through the pages.
It's a shame really. The idea of the book was very intriguing to me, and I liked the authors "writing style", but was severely disappointed.

I've just started to read this book, and it's captured my interest. I'd love to finish it, but it seems that, as of now, the only place to read the complete book is on the, AnyReads, app. Unfortunately when I try to purchase coins/tokens, etc, I get, ERROR messages, that will not allow my purchase. Neither Google, or PayPal have any idea why. NOTE TO AUTHOR- Please consider publishing this on Amazon, Dreame, Bravonovel, NovelCat, Hinovel, ReadNow, Webnovel, iReader, etc, etc. I can actually purchase items on those reading apps. I'd really love to finish reading this.
I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did!! It was a long read compared to my usual books I read! It had me hooked from the beginning! I recommend this book to everyone! It had dragons, royals, grumpy MMC, the FMC was great! She became very strong and was amazing.
I loved the book and could not put it down! I’m just sitting here shocked. The ending had me crying and worried. I would love to know more about the side characters how their life’s are after the ending of the book!
This was a really unexpected stuff your Kindle day pick over a year ago. I’ll be the first to admit, I judged a book by its cover and didn’t think I would be into it, I thought it would be cheesy. But what I got was a super complicated and winding tale! The characters are so well thought out, I’m just so surprised this doesn’t get more love and I’m convinced it’s due to the cover
"That day, in the arena...I was ready to die. I didn't care about the Imperial Games. I wasn't scared, I had no more expectations for life. However, of all people, you chose me. The moment when Krai dropped me at your feet, and you put that little piece of your coat on my shoulders, something in me changed a little. Since we met, every day, I have been seeing what a wonderful, loving man you are. You don't care about gender when you interact with people. You respect your siblings based on their skills, not their gender. You kill when you have to, not when you want. You protect those you love... and punish those who deserve to be punished. You are not perfect, but... You are the kind of man that could change this Empire into a country I can love."
BEST BOOK I’VE READ THIS YEAR!
It was really long but it was all worth it. I gave up sleep to know what was happening next. Many times I teared up and once I really cried like a lot. I looked like shit in the morning. But, it was so worth it.
If you loved The Golden Dynasty, then you just might love this book. But, mind you. This is different in a way as characters are younger and the story is also different. But I felt this was like a mixture of Game of Thrones, Rome and Vikings.
I don’t want to tell the story, I think you should experienced it yourself, but I will give trigger warnings as I think it is very much a must.
1. There is slavery in this story and this might be triggering to some and it is not glossed over at all. I cried while read those parts. It was heartbreaking, but I bow to this author for not sugarcoating slavery.
2. Child prostitution. Respect for this author to make it realistic on those times and thank you for not writing detailed about it. It’s more like told version of this is happening in this Empire and never actually shown which I am happy. It would have made it just way too dark to read.
3. Extreme abuse of power. Absolutely, no regard whatsoever for the servants by royal family.
Those were I think the most shocking and disturbing parts of the book to get through.
The love story what unfolded was one of the best I’ve ever read. I’m talking about as epic as Raphael and Elena ( my absolute all time favourite couple- Guild Hunter series). Every royal male member has actual dragon! It was the coolest thing to ever read and how Krai ( H dragon) loved and protected Cassandra was freaking amazing!
It had a baby dragon and that part was just so freaking adorable, my heart wanted to bounce out of my rib cage. So freaking cute!
Side characters were well developed and twists in the story were sophisticated and well written. Almost everything was freaking out of this world!
If to criticise something in this book, then the marriage what never happened. I understand the reasoning behind it, but I wanted H to say to everyone fuck you and put his feet down. He had the power for it, he should have used it. Second thing, the separation in the end. It was way too long and it didn’t make sense why so long ( almost 2 years). Thankfully, it was on my tolerance limit.
Overall, this is the best book I’ve read this year. This will be bought as a paperback on my shelf and I will be re-reading this book every year. If it would not be so long, maybe every 6 months 😅
🔶 virgin h 🔶 17/28 🔶 no cheating 🔶 no om/ow drama 🔶DRAGONS!! 🔶 h pregnancy and birth of a baby 🔶 dragon baby 😍 🔶 lot of twists and turns 🔶 medium to higher-ish angst 🔶 it’s quite spicy, h definitely grows into her sexuality throughout the book 🔶 HEA with multiple Epilogues of future 🔶 h is not a fighter physically but she is smart 🔶 tw: slavery, mentioning of child prostitution, very descriptive violence on page, mentioning of side characters babies killed, mentioning of rape and impregnating sister ( side character), abuse of servants
I just finished this book and it was so so so good. It’s the best book I have read in a long time and perhaps one of the best I have read, period. I’m absolutely blown away. This author deserves so much recognition for this story. I can’t believe this isn’t on shelves everywhere and being adapted into a movie or TV series. It’s seriously that good. Just to emphasize how good this book is, the author includes entire original songs and seems to create a whole other language. When I see this in a book, I am beyond impressed. It indicates how much thought went into the creation of the story, the universe, and the characters, all of which the author breathed life into. About the story… It is so well written. Truly an amazing story. The plot is well developed! I can’t help but wonder how the author dreamed this all up. The world is vivid and beautiful. Not to mention it is action packed! I’ve rarely seen this much action in books I’ve read lately. There is always something happening. It genuinely keeps you on your toes. It is astonishingly interesting and impossible to put down. The characters, of which there are many, are unique and have these bright personalities that make it easy to differentiate between each one and recognize them as unique individuals. I was especially impressed by Kareen. I could imagine her as clear as day. Her personality and mannerisms were lifelike. The emperor, too, was a character who felt real. His clueless aloof attitude towards his children was as laughable as it was aggravating. Yet, so believable for someone in his position. Other characters, such as Shareen (love her!) and Opheus were fiery and colorful, and I relished each scene with them in it. Even the villains were perfect. They weren’t overdone. It didn’t seem like they were part of something that was thrown together to add a little drama and obligatory danger. They had important roles. You got to KNOW them. The things that moved and motivated them made sense. You start to wonder, hmm… maybe this person isn’t so bad. Yet, they are. They totally are. Then there is Kairen. I just love his name. Kairen, Kairen, Kairen. A man of few words. A warrior. A brute with a soft spot only for those closest to him. I honestly expected Cassandra would ‘transform him’ into a ‘loving man’ who suddenly became this emotional one-eighty of who he was in the beginning. In some ways, he changes, but he is still Kairen. He doesn’t become somebody else. He’s still a man with flaws. His possessiveness of Cassandra and insular opinions about love were cute because he’s not the cocky confident womanizer you often see in these books. He’s a hardened man with a past that shaped him into who he is. His ignorance about love doesn’t make him a bad person, he’s just never met someone who inspired such foreign feelings before Cassandra. *And let me just say, if anyone wants to come for Kairen, call him a bad person for taking Cassandra, cry about the age gap, etc., then let’s go. Sorry to break it to you but not every story is rainbows and unicorns. Not everything is black and white. There are gray areas, always. You don’t have to agree with it. If it bothers you, shut the book. Move on. If you’re here looking for a picture perfect Barbie and Ken fairytale romance, then you’ve been misguided. There are millions of them out there elsewhere. If you’re open-minded and looking for something raw, passionate, and uninhibited, then you’ve come to the right place.* As for our heroine, Cassandra, what a special person she is. Is there a heart more pure? A soul more selfless? These are qualities we might see in other women in this genre, but with Cassandra, you see it instead of being told it. Does that make sense? It’s not like she’s waltzing around like a perfect little Disney princess. You don’t have it shoved down your throat that she’s this perfect person. Instead, you learn who she is. You learn how she thinks. She proves through action alone that she is worthy of admiration. Her devotion to those she loves, her compassion for those who need help, her kindness to those who are afraid, and the sacrifices she makes to protect her family at all costs are just… touching. I love her. She is so strong, not for all that she’s gone through, but for what she is willing to continue going through for others. I mean, wow. The sacrifice at the end… the vision of those she loves before going all in… All she cared about was her family and loved ones. She did all she could to save the ones she loved when they should have been saving her. Who would’ve thought that someone as small and physically helpless as Cassandra could play the role that she did in the end? She is an amazing character and I have to salute her along with the author who created her. All in all, the character development from start to finish is wonderful. There are so many people who you can see grow in different ways. You learn to see them in a different light. You see them as something strange and crude and then watch them shape into something more refined further into the story. Your opinions about these characters change. As they grow, meet new people, experience things for the first time, face different obstacles, and overcome unimaginable feats, they develop into something tangible and solid. I especially enjoyed reading about the ways Cassandra helped Kairen and his soldiers with her medical knowledge. His pride about the silver boxes he sees all his soldiers with toward the end of the book was touching. The love that blooms between the two of them was beautiful, which, of course, should be a given with this genre. In contrast, I even appreciated the more unpleasant events that helped shape the characters. For example, Missandra’s humbling. I thought it was important and realistic, even. She was knocked off her pedestal and shown she wasn’t as untouchable as she thought. Which is good, because the writer could have very well made her just get away with everything. You see it often enough in other stories. But the good and the bad, together, are what makes this story so vivid. I also have to say: the major conflict at the end was phenomenal. The way the author elaborates on all the different things that are happening, and from the perspective of different characters, really brings the story to life. My heart was racing in anticipation. THE LENGTH and THE DETAIL of this conflict deserves a round of applause. I feel that authors usually try to rush this part, right? They just want to get the couple back together and resolve all the issues as soon as possible, which comes off as sloppy and lazy writing, in my opinion. The fact the author focuses so intently on this part of the story is remarkable. I simply had to include this point in my review. As for emotions throughout this story… Not to be corny, but I laughed and I cried. The story and dialogue have to be really good for me to do either of those things. Usually I might go “ha” or “oh how sad” and passively flip the page. NOPE! Not with this story. I was moved. I was affected. Additionally, the romance is oh so good. The way the author describes the intimate scenes is perfect to me. Instead of lots of graphic descriptions of body parts and reproductive organs, the writer focuses more on the feelings and sensations the lovers share, which I feel is something you don’t see a lot in the romance genre. It is refreshing and still very hot, in my opinion. Usually with this genre, all the excitement and anticipation builds up until the couple have their first physical encounter, and then it’s less thrilling and redundant after that. With this story, that was certainly not the case. There are several intimate moments and I enjoyed every one of them.
***My only complaint is that I want more!!!***
Author Jenny Fox, if you ever see this, please write many sequels to this story! I haven’t had enough of this universe you created and the characters which inhabit it. I’d love to read about how things resolve with the whole successor situation. I’d love to know how things fare with Missandra, and I am anxious to see if she ends up with a certain young prince. And, of course, I’d love to spend hours upon hours reading about Kairen and Cassandra’s relationship, and about their family. I’d even enjoy reading about all that transpired between the time the two were separated. After all, there are so many questions left unanswered.
