“Do you truly believe that you can delay the Calamity? Even if it could be delayed, how much more sacrifice can you justify? Until everyone except you lot is killed?”
The journey of the Enemy of the World continues as he steps foot in the fields of conflict on the frontlines of the Demon Realm. Wielding the might of magic obtained under the noses of his enemies, Sungchul travels in search of opportunities to hone his powers of Cosmomancy and Alchemy, and put an end to the first of the prophesized Calamities. But unlike before, time is not on his side. Conspiracies brew in the dark, eating away at the foundations of the frontlines holding back the all-consuming army of the Demons that threaten to unleash unimaginable horrors upon the world. The world titters ever closer to the edge of ruin and the hour grows dark.
Delve deep into the labyrinth of an ancient race whose walls are filled to the brim with those sacrificed for the sake of power, tag along on a quest of vengeance into the mist-filled den of the devils, and observe as he brings war to the forces of evil threatening to consume the world.
However, never forget that it is not for the sake of humanity's salvation that he wields his indomitable hammer.
I recommend that people read the first two books together. They make a complete arc that was satisfying to read. The writing + translation was better in #2.
Need to decide if I want to continue the series on KU, Oppa Translations website or wait for the audiobook. =)
Much better than the first book. The OP MC becomes more of a three dimensional person and probably the translation also improves. The story keeps being amazing as the world fleshes out. Did I say flesh? The amount of dead bodies in this series is crazy, no wonder they need to summon beings from another world. If you have a weak stomach or a vivid imagination don't read it.
Love this series. I was getting real sick of other “dark” stories that were just about terrible umm... non-consensual things that happen to all the characters. Even though the main character is super OP the side characters are interesting enough to hold your attention.
This book is one of the greatest books I’ve ever read, no joke. The plot is well developed, the characters are just awesome, and the main character is the perfect amount of power. The greatest thing about it is that it completely sidestepped the lewd aspects of these kinds of books, and for that the author has done a remarkable job at.
I should have known better than to continue this series considering that the first book was only just decent enough to avoid being called a waste of time. Unfortunately, I didn't have any other books I was in the mood to read at the time and I checked this out.
Whatever bit of glamour the first book had faded and it left me with flat characters, passive and unenthusiastic translated prose, and a story that spends a lot of time on side quests without ever really going anywhere that matters. The point of the story where this book ends is what should have been the half-way mark of Book 1 if the story was written with good pacing.
My experience with this book was a bit similar to reading a dictionary, but without the learning. I don't think you can write prose that provides less excitement. The prose combined with an absence of good characters that felt human, and a lack of stake in the events bored me. Normally I would have dropped this story, but at the 50% mark my Kindle said there was only an hour left, so I charged through. I should have dropped it, but I can be stubborn at times.
This book is better than the first one. In the first book, we don't know much about the world and so we don't know who to hate and who not to. There are more people to hate here, so the story is more enjoyable. A twisted sentiment, to be sure, but watching wicked people get their comeuppance is pretty much what I'm reading this book for. That and watching the protagonist's growth.
Speaking of the protagonist, after reading so far, we start to see more of what makes the protagonist who he is as a person. And he slowly stops being a mere blank slate and starts becoming someone you care about. It was very interesting to watch the main character act like a real person when he did *not* go off and save everyone every chance he got (and thankfully he wasn't some crazed lunatic killing people for no good reason). In a world as messed up as Other World, the MC actually seems like a decent person as a result. I really appreciated that.
I started the first book back when I was on a LITRPG book buying spree and Enemy of the World was swept up with a whole host of others. It stood out among some good and some unreadable, and i would check kindle at first once a day then once a week then once a month etc. when just the other day as I was checking on another “show all 50 items” tab on my app, two years down the track, book two appears. It was worth the wait, you can tell the whole book has been gone over several times in proof read as it is just a very smooth read. It’s worth 5 stars for sure. I just hope book three isn’t two years away at this point, hopefully the first and now second book have delivered unto author Bro something resembling an income so the day job can be put aside and the focus is on writing (and book three!).
I really enjoy the protagonist walking around slapping everything into submission, but dear lord does he cook some nastiness... well it's more that some of the ingredients, and the description of blood (among other things) bursting / melting in your mouth as delicious is nasty. I can't knock another Culture's cuisine though. I guess I have an "English palate", according to the protagonist.
This was a fun read. The protagonist is like Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a cliff. He accomplishes a goal and reaches some distance, only to be forced to start over again.
I'm still enjoying the different style of this book, but I still get the impression that the translation to English was either really hard to do due to the differences in language, or some other reason. It doesn't sound... rounded to me. Sometimes the rhythm of the story suffers under that issue, and it detracts from the reading enjoyment.
Also, I'm not yet very invested in the characters. Neither the main character, nor the supporting cast. There were some good seeds, and I'm getting quite interested in the background of the whole story, but it's not quite enough to pull me through with fervor.
I'll continue the series, but it isn't pulling me through at the moment. If I had another series that'd tempt me I'd probably stop here.
Once again the protagonist shows his lack of compassion throughout the book by letting threats to happen that he easily could have prevented and people to die which he could have saved.
Criticism and comments
The empire reacted moronic by not sending mmore troops to the threatened border earlier. Especially with the curse of extinction that limits the access to new recruits dramatically!
The fact that an Earthbound force including a gigantic mobile fortress can sneak up on an army with strong air support speaks volumes about their incompetence..
The protagonist is supposed to have sheer limitless supplies in his inventory but no cooking pot or sleeping bag?
The audaciousness from the first book continues. Its refreshing to see a no-nonsense protagonist with a grey moral compass.
The only complaint I have is the inconsistent pacing of the book. It is sometimes too fast, and sometimes slows down to normal levels. A smoother flow would really make reading a better experience in my opinion, even if it might slightly slow the overall pace of the book. I think the story here is good enough that readers won't mind a slower pace, with the benefit of being able to get more details of the world.
I re-read the first book as it has been a while, but unlike most series, the second book was just as awesome as the first. The translation was very well done. I understand that the third is being translated now! Road Warrior will stay on my list to check for the next book. Why did I enjoy this book? Further development of the Main Character! No more spoiling, read and enjoy for yourself.
This book is sick, highly recommend and tons of thanks to the people who helped translate it. Continuation of the first book that follows its footsteps very closely. I still personally wish he had at least 1 friend, but I guess I'll have to settle for the magic book.
Overall this was a good book, second in the series and better than the first. They really need to invest in better translators, or once the book reaches the point it is now have an individual whose first language is English polish it up. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Mistakes: Very well translated. However I feel the author didn't pay attention to his own writings. Information changes from page to page. Details don't fit information given.
Plot: I'm stupidly strong and have a hammer
Characters: Unlikable MC. If he had to struggle he might have been interesting.
I don't know why but I love book series with an overwhelming op main character but not only that, but when the story and the plot is just unmatched to go along. It's a fast pace book but doesn't skip out on to many details, just enough to keep really invested and full of curiosity. LOVE IT
Excellent example of a well translated and written Korean Isekai. My only problem with it the MC. Less than likeable but fully fleshed out.
Try if you like a hard and violent MC in a dystopian world. I personally like my MC’s more personable but I’ll still read the series because of how well written it is.
This story flowed a bit better than the first book and it's definitely interesting to see some of the MC reasons for why he is the way he is. All in all I'm looking to reading the next book in this series
I enjoyed the way this author writes an OP character. It is not so focus on how OP the MC is but what is happening are them and the consequences of his actions. Also I love how the plot is actually progressing and not just spinning is wheels so it can have more books.
It is a good story with interesting twists and links to how the story and characters are connected. Powerful main character that feared but seems to be trying to help out.
