World class heart surgeon, Katherine Ross meets a young woman anonymously on a dating app. When each woman realises who the other really is, can they find a way to turn their intense passion into love?
A sizzling hot Age Gap Medical Romance from Emily Hayes.
Dr Katherine Ross is a world class heart surgeon. She holds life and death in her hands on a daily basis. Her own heart is fiercely guarded.
She finds an intense forbidden passion with the mysterious Sophia.
Can she find a way to let Sophia in, to heal her own broken heart?
This is the second book I've read by this author and, for now, it will be the last.
The writing is okay, but it lacks any emotional depth due to being heavy on tell. There are huge info dumps throughout. Points that should have a reader jumping for joy or reaching for a box of tissues are simply glossed over.
Like the first book, this story tried to be too much in too short of a time. Also like the first book, it could do with an editor.
There is some sex, but most of it we are 'told' about, which probably wasn't a bad thing...She breathed the words through the silk into Katherine's tidy muff.
And I still have no clue what this was supposed to say....Katherine stood up and stretched a boat. She was at work, no boats in sight.
If you're looking for a short read with a lot jammed into it, this could be just the ticket.
Surgeon: A Lesbian Medical Romance (Forest Vale Hospital Book 1) by Emily Hayes, I loved this book. I felt honest and organic. Everything which happens in this romance flows from reality. Nothing seemed made up. There were no artificial roadblocks or intermissions just to push my buttons. Someone did not interrupt every time the MCs were about to speak a revelation that might grow the relationship. I would love to read more books where the author uses honesty instead of trickery to make me wonder if the relationship will survive or not. This in my eyes is a full-on 5-star gem.
My first book by this author. This novella is part of a medical series and covers a very common thing that happens between people that work in a hospital; the author explores a lot of personalities, traumas, basically different life experiences that provide a wide range of feelings and emotions.
This book is fast, there’s no depth in the story, although you get to know one of the main characters’ pasts (and it is heavy) you seem to understand her but at the same time you don’t get how quickly she changes her way of thinking, it was too hurried to feel real.
There’s a lot in a short period of time and don’t forget you get you happily ever after. Again, fast but I enjoyed it.
When you start skipping the sex scenes, you know it's bad.
This lesbian romance follows a heart surgeon who gave up on love after her wife's death but at the insistence of her sister decides to sign up to a dating site and ends up meeting this very alluring woman only to realize she's the new intern at her hospital.
The book is very low angst with a few graphic sex scenes and brief moments of bonding between them. The romance was the least romantic like thing I've ever read, everything felt forced and there wasn't any chemistry between. It was really boring as well because the author doesn't manage to make emotional moments stand out. Also, everything feels rushed and not well developed. The sex scenes were graphic but not steamy, they felt very impersonal and robotic.
My main issue was the author's writing style, there were a lot of short sentences that interrupted the flow of the story and it made the romance feel rushed. A lot of time jumps that further diminished their time together and overall just a very lacking story in the emotional department.
I had fun reading this novella. I listened to the audiobook & it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting but not quite steamy enough. I was definitely thinking we would get more sex scenes between the two of them. Most of the steamy scenes felt rushed and like they could have been fleshed out way more. The final conflict was resolved way too easily & one of our leads makes a comment about women being prettier without makeup (just a personal pet peeve).
I liked the characters and their relationship. I thought their story was cute and I had a fun time listening to the book. I definitely will read more from this author.
I was heartbroken for Katherine and then to finally be with someone who you shouldn’t. Sophia is fun and sexy and caring. I nearly lost it in the last chapter. You need to read it to know. I really enjoyed this book and will read more by Emily.
This was excellent, real like Emily Hayes writing a lot, another one with two likable characters in Sophia and Katherine, it's kinky and hope we'll see her write more about these two or just give them their own series.
The initial story arc follows the main characters as they meet, establish that they have great chemistry in bed and finally discover who they are in real life. Despite concerns about a conflict of interest, subsequent events demonstrate that the pull between them is extremely powerful.
Unfortunately at that point the story goes off the rails a bit. While the pair have great sex it has not been shown that their connection is the sort that leads to long term commitment. Yet suddenly they are in one. At some later date their relationship comes to light at the hospital and whispers run rampant -- and then the story abruptly stops with happily ever after. The end was a little unsatisfying.
This story started out so good. The character of Katherine was written extremely well. You learn what type of surgeon she is, you learn how she meets her future wife and you learn how she loses her wife. All that you learn shapes who Katherine is. Under pressure she does the dating app thing. When she meets Sophie, they come to an understanding and a relationship is started. When events finds them both in a very gray area, they realize it needs to end. Now this is where it went down hill. Based on Katherine’s back story you can pretty much determine there is a large age gap which is also not addressed. They don’t discuss what their options could or should be. But they continue to run into each other and low and behold are once again involved. Now not only do they start to reveal themselves to the chance of people seeing them but they now start to have sex in the office. An intern and a top surgeon. First gossip, then Sophie tries to save Katherine’s job only to realize that the higher ups says it’s ok as long as they keep their relationship outside of the hospital so no one can hear them having sex again. So, I was disappointed in how this ended. There was so many better ways to wind this up for them to be together in love since that was what the writer was leading us to. Sort of was rushed. Strong characters but really weak ending.....
Katherine Ross was not looking for love. Being a Dr, a surgeon, was all she thought she had time for. Melissa entered the ER and all that changed. They spent ten years loving each other in the best way. Then the moment no Dr wants happened, an accident took Melissa and Katherine locked up her heart. In the five years since that moment she put everything into her career. Head of Cardio Thoracic Surgery at Forest Vale. A dating app her sister suggested for the too busy Dr. encouraging her to date bring her Sophia. Neither knows what the other does for work but they connected in a very sexually active spark. Once they finally talk and work comes into sight an end to a beautiful start must happen. A hospital Dr and a new intern can not love each other. Emily Hayes is a new author to me but I will be looking for her other books. My heart hear when Katherine lost Melissa. I admire the dedication she had but was so glad Sophia entered her world. I loved the connection you could feel so instantly between them. The dialogue was simple and touching. Such a fun read, beautiful love story and strong woman you just want to be happy. I loved this story.
I read a lot of lesfic and medical fics are one of my favourite, but I have to feel the tension and the stress of the situations and the chemistry between the characters. I didn't get that here. It felt like a mash up of Grey's Anatomy episodes in places...the hook up girl being on the surgical rotation; death by massive car crash etc. The first part was a big info dump, then there were a lot of repeated words and phrases, and headhopping. The characters came across as 2D because it was lacking in emotion and everything was mechanical... Character walks into a room, they pull back a chair, they cross their legs, they sit forward, pick up a coffee cup, they smile and cock their head... kind of thing. We're told what the characters feel rather than find out through dialogue and action, which makes things feel contrived and impersonal. It could have done with an edit for repetition and expression. This one wasn't for me.
It's always exciting to find a new author in my "genre". I think there's a lot of potential here.
The goods - The sex is very well written, though a little more detail is always good. I loved the characters. The power play is a lot of fun.
The bads - The ending could have been fleshed out a bit more. There are also some minor story quibbles I have. But there is a story here and for erotica I always reward story and character.
The verdict - This is well worth checking out! I will be reading more of Emily's stuff.
This book had so much going for it in the beginning and then kind of fell flat. Plus the quick happy ending just didn’t ring true. Overall I liked it and would read another book by this author but I guess some stories you want to see more depth and was hoping for more when it quickly ended.
DNF. It would be unfair to rate this as I could barely read it. It started with an info dump then stumbled into a messy attempt at medical scenes. Once the main part of the book actually started, I lost my momentum and couldn’t keep reading with all the mistakes.
Lots of typos (KU). I also thought the narration was in third-person omniscient, but there are also marked mid-chapter breaks where the perspective switches back to limited. Not really a fan of that ending.
Naively written which kind of worked as the story was as simplistic as the writing. Take it or leave it - it helped pass an hour. Strange, the story stays with me long after it should. Not sure why.
Plot: The book starts with Katherine online dating for the first time since her wife died five years ago. She meets Sophia and they agree to have casual sex. They hook up again a few days later and are settling into a satisfying sex only arrangement. Then they meet at work and realize that Sophia is one of the interns at Katherine’s hospital.
They agree that they can’t continue their casual relationship. Sophia starts to develop feelings and misses Katherine. She shows up late at night at Katherine’s door and seduces her. Katherine is also starting to develop feelings but knows that this relationship could jeopardize her career and tells Sophia that they can’t continue.
Sophia is hurt but understands. Katherine watches her from afar until Sophia has a hard day at work. Katherine can’t stop herself from comforting her and they agree to start a secret relationship. They are happy together but eventually get caught. In a huge anti-climax the president of the hospital tells them it’s fine and they start their HEA.
Characterization: Katherine exudes Alfa energy in everything she does.
Sophia is smart and dedicated to learning TJ be a good doctor.
Writing: This was written in third person perspective. It’s obvious from the get go that this is basically Grey’s Anatomy fan fiction. The same ridiculous plot lines. The writing is pretty bad and could use a few more read throughs when editing. I found multiple typos, the wrong tense being used, and continuity errors.

first of all i was happily sirprised at the beginning having the trajedy at the front of the book, but you do get to know katherine from that expereance, i quite understood the time it took for katherine to become more open to getting back in the sadle. i did get the way this story was heading about sophia's hookup with katherine, and her iminant inturn potion in katherines department, the triles and tribulations of that romance was sweet and sad
the best bit of the book for me after the build up was katherines confetion, after sophia's crying uncontrolably in katherines apartment, sofphia gets up to leave and is held back i don't want you tou leave she say's i don't want you to stay just for sex (their arangement) i want you to stay because i like you i want to talk to you, i want to be around you i want to look after you . um sorry if this little snipet gives the story away. but that couple of sentances had me crying' the emotion ang angst in katherins out pouring were to much for me. one small problem with the whole story came at almost the end after the two m'c s had made up and started hanging out in the office it came crunch time, and everthing was o;k because the president was an old fried of katherines ? i think not
This was such a bittersweet story. The whirlwind love that Katherine and Melissa shared was just beautiful and then-cue the waterworks-tragedy struck. I felt Katherine's pain, my heart ached so much for her. Then, five years later at the convincing off her sister, Amelia, Katherine meets Sophia. Surely, tragedy wouldn't strike her so horribly twice, I thought and wholeheartedly hoped. What Katherine and Sophia shared was rare and I was their number one fan routing for them the entire time! I rode their emotionally, electrifying rollercoaster with them to the very end and I was once again, sad to see it all come to an end. This was another really great short by author, Emily Hayes, that I wished would have been much longer. Grab a copy and enjoy!
This was a sweet story and reading it was nice ; but the way it ended was to quick. This is started of well and got better as I read it .This have a lot of information about Surgeons hours and the hours they sometimes work. The information about internet's was also good. The main characters Katherine Ross (Cardiologist)Surgeon on call . Then Sophia (intern) meet through a dating app. Neither knew what jobs the did into it was internet's day. This story has was too short and ended to quickly. Emily Hayes (author) did a good job writing this but the way. it ended felt rushed liked she got bored with it. This story could have been longer and better. But I just feel cheated out of a brilliant book. Have it 4*** stars deducted one as it was good story but rushed toward the end.😐🤔🤔
Words cannot fully appreciate how much this first story of the series captivates me. Emily is a recent addition to my altime favourite indie authors realm and it's well deserved with every single word perfectly poised to create the story. So we have a love lost through tragedy and a subtle arrangement which cannot be denied despite its obvious forbidden repercussions, in the end we must grasp that which makes us happy and seek its conclusion to an equally happy ending.
It was okay read. For a short one is worth reading... There were few repetitions with descriptions and the story line. The main characters were so little described that I couldn't imagine them properly.. But the story is interesting, the start was strong and well presented. The end was a bit abrupt, but I guess with the short stories sometimes it is the case. I think the author has a potential so would check her books again.
The first chapter was so beautifully written. I could literally feel the pain of Dr. Katherine Ross firsthand. Then the progression of the story had immense potential towards a great end. But damn, was the ending rushed. A happy ending is always appreciated but it was so rushed. I was so put off. Like, the story was working so well towards a high, but the end was so flat. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, to be very honest.

Well Ms Hayes did her homework for this story! I am impressed that the characters really meshed with many of my work experiences while in my training years at the hospitals in NYC. Relationships do happen with doctors, nurses, residents and students along with every other human that enters the buildings. Is it frowned upon, yeah sure but impossible to stop. Enjoy life while you can.
