This is the manual for practicing period astronomy. It will give you the tools to start observing the heavens the old ways. This is the best place to start, everything else can be added on from here. This book is even usable without a knowledge deep of mathematics.
A very readable Astronomy textbook on how to actually perform the astronomical observations and calculations from various ancient cultures. I must admit I skimmed a lot in the motion of the planets, but I love the book for its detailed coverage of how to construct and use an astrolabe.
I liked it. Got a little math heavy at times for me, but I enjoyed learning how to understand the sky with just my eyes and simple instruments. I'd recommend.
