This is a book about the constant conflict between Heaven and Hell, where the O'Mara family, composed of nine supernaturals similar to guardian angels, fight the evil creatures who keep trying to cause harm to unknowing humans.
The story centers on family bonds, love and loyalty, but don't get me wrong -- the whole novel is a very thrilling ride full of action, battles and fights between the Guardians (who protect humans) and evil demons-especially a certain one, who seems to be extremely vicious and hard to kill... and he has taken it out on Gen O'Mara and her protegées.
The author does a really good and innovative job including lots of Christian myths/beliefs, locations and customs, with creative uses of holy water, holy palms and such (even as weapons!!). I found that interesting and it matches the theme of the book (Heaven vs Hell) very well.
What I liked the most about this book was how it made me wonder about the possibility of having Guardians (or guardian angels) actually looking out for us. It would be so nice to have one of the O'Maras by our side at all times!
The world building is well done, with lots of Heaven/Hell creatures with different jobs and abilities, many planes of existence, etc. Everything is well described in the book and it feels like a real possibility.
All in all this is a great series starter if you like fantasy books with lots of action!

In the timeless battle between Heaven and Hell, humanity stands unaware of the forces, Heavenly, Hellish, and (supposedly) neutral, that fight for our souls. In J.L. Rothstein’s Atonement: Heaven Sent, Guardians are some of the beings sent by Heaven to save humanity from demons and their ilk. Not Angels, as often believed, Guardians still watch over humans and are often charged with individuals to look over them and keep them safe. The O’Mara family has been around for centuries, working as a team to ensure Hellions, Hell Fighters, demons, and more don’t gain a foothold on earth, overstepping their bounds in the ancient Accord with Heaven.
The journey of the O’Maras, and in specific, Genevieve “Gen” O’Mara, begins decades before the story opens when her husband, Gabriel, vanishes from the earth without a trace. Having never gotten over his departure, she harbors anger and resentment that drives her to rash action and brings down calamity upon herself and her family. Her impetuous nature will lead to a greater conflict between Heaven and Hell than they have ever experienced, and the family must fight every minute to stay together and alive. Angels, Arch Angels, Demons, and more will join the fray, turning the tides one way or the other.
Rothstein does an incredible job pacing this story to keep you drawn in and excited. She provides the reader with just enough detail to keep you guessing about what has happened and what will happen next. I couldn’t put the book down, desperate to learn more about the characters as people and the different kinds of beings that live unseen amongst the humans. A fantasy/supernatural writer’s success lies in their ability to create a world and make it feel real. Rothstein’s beings are well thought out and easy to envision, with so many different kinds of creatures to learn about. The tensions between the divine beings and the evil ones is paralleled only by the strain put upon the neutral beings as they try to bot choose a side. Fans of Supernatural or Buffy will get a kick out of this book because, in addition to a fantastical supernatural setting, the characters are real and flawed in a way that makes them all too relatable. Relationships, familial, platonic, and romantic, are woven through the story, keeping both the characters and the reader grounded in the humanness of these supernatural beings, and you will finish desperate for more!

Deep Mythology!

So this is a little front loaded. Don’t let that deter you. A lot happens really fast and your head spins a bit.
But that’s how you get a fast-paced, action-heavy treat like this. Yes there’s a lot of siblings and some are kind of sidelined a bit, likely to get more familiar with down the road. The demon/angel hierarchy is complex. And honestly, our lead characters don’t know everything about it either. Just like it would be.
Don’t worry. There’s places to relax and most of the info you don’t understand at first is explained more. I expect more focus on the other siblings in subsequent books.

We more focus largely on the sisters, which worked for me. Strong women who also want to be loved. Don’t we all?
Gen and Deb are great but... Stand out for me is Kelly she has an unexpected and delightful mix of traits. A very well rounded and fun character.

Shades of Charmed. A touch of “The Prophecy” films.
And yes as many have said a strong dose of “Buffy” a must for any urban fantasy fans!

An intriguing take on Heaven & Hell

"Atonement" was an intriguing story about the inner workings of heaven and hell. The story is told from the view point of the O'Mara siblings, of whom their are several. It manages to maintain it's continuity, however, despite the ever changing points of view. A bold choice on the writer's part, but it works. Very enjoyable.

Absolutely loved it! The plot is intriguing, the characters are a wonderful group of people I can root for -- and enjoy hanging out with -- and it is just a terrific ride. Rothstein's focus on a large, loving family who back each other up through quite literally hellish challenges is reminiscent of the late Father Andrew Greeley. I'm hooked...and I hope for many more adventures with the O'Maras!

I’d been looking forward to reading this book for a while, and it didn’t disappoint! Powerful opposing forces, Heaven against Hell, guardians fighting demons on earth, a badass protagonist and high stakes from the off are all things that I love in a book.

Atonement opens with Gen remembering her husband on the 40th anniversary of his disappearance, and emotions are running high. Then she gets a distress call from one of her charges. A climactic, turbulent battle with a demon ensues – and leads Gen to making a mistake bourne of sorrow and pain on this raw anniversary of her husband’s unexplained absence. This unleashes the fury of Hell on not only Gen and her family of guardians, but also on their charges and humans innocent in all of it. The consequences are greater than anyone could have predicted.

The story is a rollercoaster of action that had me whipping through the pages, interspersed with quieter, meaningful moments between family which bring home the stakes. It’s told through close third person perspective between various members of the family of nine; a family I’m pretty jealous of because I can only wish I had a family as dynamic and awesome as the O’Mara’s! I was hooked from the start, not expecting to be drawn into thrilling action so quickly but enjoying every word.

As the plot unfolds and the pieces begin to come together, it’s clear that more parts are in play than just Gen’s actions – but still, I love that one of the issues Rothstein explores is that of human flaws and mistakes, through the character of Gen who just wants to see her husband again and, really, does nothing most of us wouldn‘t also have done in her situation.

Atonement is well-written with a beautifully formed world drawing on inspiration from Christian themes and is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I eagerly await the release of Book 2! It’s fun, exciting, emotional, fast-paced. and enabled me to suspend reality for the duration of reading so I could completely submerge myself in the world Rothstein created. I fully recommend it to anyone looking for a light, thrilling fantasy read to immerse themselves in.

I was kindly gifted an ebook copy of Heaven Sent for an honest review

This book was action packed from the start and for me I read this very quickly!
The family connection and bonds shown in this book were magical, i really enjoyed how they all worked together and were there for each other. The main focus in this book is Gen but it also follows her other sisters Deb and Kelly, this did cause me a bit of confusion at the start trying to remember who was who.
I liked that we were introduced to the four horseman, i am intrigued about when they will appear next and what their plans are.
Great start to the series and looking forward to book 2

Full of action and adventure!

Supernatural fans will love to read this book! Heaven and Hell, light and dark, angels and demons, do I need to say any more? The O’Mara siblings are a group of nine guardians on earth who are sent to protect their charges (humans who find themselves in danger) when odd things start to happen. An uprising of anger, aggression and destruction has taken over and they need to work together to uncover what is causing it. A mystery unfolds, bringing their past with it. Atonement was a captivating read that had me turning the pages even when I was too tired to continue. I highly recommend it.

Love it!

I believe in angels and demons, always have. This book, although fiction, gives a new perspective on guardian angels for me. It’s nice to think of them being there, and our prayers giving them extra boost to protect us better. Spiritual warfare going on just out of our sight, beneath the surface, all around us.

I found this book thoroughly entertaining. It was smooth flowing, the characters well defined, included a twist on the whole Heaven-Hell trope, and many of the chapters ended in a way that I just had to turn the page and keep reading. To me, the characters came across on a personal level and the family dynamics really shined.

One of the many things I loved about this book was the message that each of us have the power within to overcome adversity. We just sometimes need loved ones to remind us.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not my normal genre by any means but during these covid times im trying to widen my book selection. I was sucked in immediately through the first few pages. I read the entire book in a few days because I couldnt put it down. There are alot of strong characters which is exciting because I cant wait to learn more about each one. I already have a favorite and cant wait for that story! If this is your normal genre I imagine your going to love it and if its not definitely give it a shot, an exciting plot with family ties and romance mixed in. Loved it!

It's not often I read a book that completely captures my mind and my imagination but this one achieved just that. With its original plot, sophisticated writing and brilliant characters I couldn't put it down. This book is filled with excitement that had me turning each page wondering what the next twist would be. It's plot is like nothing I have ever come across before. I'm looking forward to the second book!

What an extraordinary book! As a rule, I try not to dwell on the pain and suffering that evil causes. I know it does, and that's enough for me. When I hear mention of demons and hell, I usually push it out of my mind.

JL Rothstein's Atonement doesn't allow the reader to do that. Her guardians - the O'Mara family - experience every sort of agony -- physical, mental, emotional -- as they fight to protect the human race against evil.

In Chapter One, a demon tempts a young woman to kill herself... I won't say more except that from there, the story only gets more intense. Throughout the book, whenever there's rage, violence, or despair, a demon or demons are present. Evil causes terrible discord, something we would all do well to remember.

The demons are terrifying, cruel, and relentless.

But there's also love and laughter. The O'Mara's are a close and wonderful family. They are each just as relentless in their mission(s), as well as brave and prepared to give up their lives for the good of all. But even in this -- and it's the author's special gift -- even though the guardians aren't human, they possess very human traits. They make mistakes. They know love, fear, and pain. They exhibit grief, anger, frustration, and joy.

So, it's not just a story of good versus evil, but a story of family, a story of love. The O'Mara family and their allies are likeable/loveable characters. I was holding my breath through most the book and felt with them every step of the way.

Rothstein shares a generous dose of religious tradition as well as Biblical references. The Four Horsemen from Revelation make an appearance. It's epic. It's violent.

It's brilliant.

Good vs Evil, Heaven vs Hell … a battle for the ages. Genevieve and her 8 siblings are Guardians, tasked with living among humans and protecting them from demons sent from hell. After Gen kills a demon in violation of the accords between Heaven & Hell, there is a battle looming that will test the Guardians like never before. Along the way, we get to know Gen’s two sisters well and are introduced to her 6 brothers. Gen and her sisters are the stars and we follow them as they struggle with the anniversary of the loss of each of their significant others. Her six brothers get less attention but should be more prominently featured in further entries in the Heaven Sent series. There’s also Angels, a Sentinel, Watchers and an Avenging Angel there to assist the Guardians along the way.

This book had a Buffy the Vampire vibe with equal parts action, angst, love and humor. The mythology takes pieces of Catholic/Christian lore and expands the universe creating heroes and villains with superhero like attributes. I’m excited about where this series will go and I am particularly intrigued by The Pit, which is the front lines in the eternal war being waged by those representing Heaven & Hell.

Available on Kindle Unlimited, this one gets 5 Stars. It’s a quick and entertaining read with plenty of heart, battles galore and little bit of romance. This is a series to watch as there are plenty of story lines still to be explored.

I think the overall plot is great! It’s really catchy -the continuous battle between heaven and hell, and the O’Mara family fighting to save humanity. There were lots of characters and it may take a little time to wrap your head around it all, but once you do, you’ll definitely settle well into the plot! I Loved the plot development and primary characters, Genevieve especially. ( trying hard to review without spoilers).

A thrilling read altogether. Definitely recommend!

JL Rothstein’s first book in the Heaven Sent series, “Atonement” is an action-packed story from start to finish, about the Angels you should be thankful are around you and the demons you don’t want to know about. I grew up going to Sunday school and thought I knew about Angels, but the gritty, fierce creatures in Rothstein’s book were not on my coloring pages. I especially appreciated the powerful female heavenly creatures who kicked butt and did not take prisoners. This is what I hope my Guardian Angel is capable of.

Gen and her sisters are believable as almost-human and likable. Rothstein’s take on Angels is tinged with relatable humanity, which makes it possible to worry about the creatures during their struggles. They were women I could be friends with (which would come in very handy if any dark forces were lurking around).

Overall, I enjoyed Atonement and look forward to the next book in the series. Kudos to Rothstein for a great debut!

Amazing! Well written! Highly recommend!

This was a very well done book from beginning to end. I enjoyed the dynamics of the siblings and the mystery around the missing demon, missing men, and the strange things happening. Even with such a large cast of characters, I never found myself confused nor did I feel any less emotion if something happened to one vs the other. Kudos to the author for that, because that isn't an easy task.

I thought the world building was detailed and solid. Having rules and limitations on both sides made for interesting confrontations. I'm definitely going to be reading more of this series!

Neat concept, Need more

It’s an interesting setup the author created, and the beginning and the ending were engaging. There were a lot of characters that I would like to see develop their own personalities more, and it was hard to keep track of who was with who, and the different points of view between the action. We know the characters are angels with various titles, but I’d really love to get an explanation of the hierarchy they operate in, their jobs, just more backstory etc. The premise has much potential that needs explored more to the reader.

Starting with the cover of the book I personally felt it was a very nice and attractive cover. The title is a perfect suited one and I guess is also perfectly relevant to the story of the book. Personally, when I saw the book, I just wanted to read the book which I feel is a positive point because the cover and the title can directly impact the sales and readers of the book.
Starting with the story of the book. I loved the story; every character had a very important role and the way it was written amazed me. The story is very interesting and is based on Guardians who are sent from heaven to fight the demons also there are some neutrals. The characterization done in the story was really nice and I felt it very real while reading the book. I have read some book where the characters and the story don’t go together and they lack realisation I am sure if you read this book you won’t go through such an experience. I would like to mention more about the story as it is one of the stories which was very happening as Guardians are also looking over people and are always expected to look over them and keep them safe. For millennia, the O'Mara family has been around, working as a team to ensure that Hellions, Hell Warriors, demons, and more do not gain a foothold on earth, violating their boundaries in the ancient Heaven Accord. This novel had a Buffy the Vampire vibe with action, fear, love and satire in equal parts. Mythology takes bits of Catholic / Christian lore and extends the cosmos with superhero-like characteristics, making heroes and villains. I just can’t stop telling you all about this book as the story was so good and catchy. I was hooked to the book for hours and the reading was so effortless. I totally loved it. Waiting to read more from the author. Also, the language and the words were used were normal and was a normal length read but worth it. I would like to thank author for giving me such an experience through the book.

Book Name: Atonement (Heaven Sent Book 1)

Genre: Fantasy/ Thriller

Summary: To Hell, this world is fractured and faithless, perfectly ripe for the picking. Sent by Heaven, Guardians defend against a malevolent onslaught of demonic intrusion. For hundreds of years the nine siblings of the O’Mara family have been engaged in this merciless battle, fighting to protect the souls of all humanity.
Heaven and Hell have been waging this infernal war bound only by the rules of a contentious accord. On the anniversary of her husband Gabriel’s disappearance, Genevieve O’Mara’s lingering sorrow manifests into a murderous rage unfurled upon a demon. Vengeance is coming, not just for Genevieve, but for all those she loves.

My Opinion: What an amazing read it was, I just loved it so much. The storyline revolves around Gabe and Gen, it's a book that kept me hooked. The way it has a soothing yet thrilling fantasy theme, I just loved how things were coming in Gen's way, at times I truly had to weep for her but on the other way a thin line of mystery was continuously building and I couldn't keep calm until I was done. It's a great great story, being the first book it leaves me willing for me. I am amazed.

Good and Bad: I loved Gen, not that she is a character who is extremely relatable but the way she is built, the way book ended, I was thrilled and touched.

My favorites from the book:

For me, I loved the second half more, I felt things were really getting aligned and I loved that.

Target Audience: Young audience will really really enjoy it. Thriller lovers will love it too.

What to expect: Drama, thrill, twists and turns.

Final verdict: Just read it without thinking twice, it turned out more amazing than I thought.

This is a full length fictional story which questions the evil and the good. It's a well written and amazingly narrated story which has minute details in terms of scenarios and characters and the characters have a depth which lacks in many fantasy books. Gen is an amazing character and a character I was extremely excited to know more about, the storyline takes unusual turns and makes the reader more curious as we go forward page by page. The storyline is extremely gripping and unique. I loved how unpredictable it is, it's a full length book, so I will recommend you to read it slow, though it's quite fast paced but if you are a beginner please read it at your own pace, I really loved the second half of the storyline more than the first half because I feel in the second half, a lot of loose ends started to connect and so many things made sense. It's a book that will definitely keep all sorts of readers on their seat, highy intrigued to know what happens next and will make you wonder by the deadly-unique outcomes. I will definitely recommend it.

This is an action-driven glimpse into the eternal battles between heaven and hell, and how they impact the innocent humans caught in the crossfire. J.L. Rothstein introduces the concept of Guardians, immortals who weren't always eternal--although much is yet to be revealed about the origins of the sibling Guardians at the center of this narrative--who are tasked with mortal charges, and who must wage war to protect their lives, and their very souls. Rothstein delicately balances issues of faith without ever becoming preachy, yet her writing reveals her own strong belief that there are other worlds than these, with ramifications for those of us here on earth. An exciting read!

Different vibes

The O'Mara clan are all guardians. They protect their charges against demons and their influences. Gen is married to Gabriel, who went missing fourth years ago. She wears her wedding ring on a chair around her neck. One specific demon was taunting her charge and threatened to kill the charge and her unborn child, so Gen sent him back to hell.

He's back for revenge, with promises to kill her entire family. Will he succeed in picking them off one by one??

It's an interesting story but can be rather confusing. I could barely keep up with who was who.

This was a fun adventure. It's about love and family but it's full of action! I really liked the world and the different creatures. The world is a fantasy world but it felt real and the different creatures were so easy to picture and there are so many of them. From the first page the action begins and it's non-stop there's always something going on. It makes you want to turn the pages faster. It's a fast paced story that you'll have no problem getting lost in! Thank you Insta Book Tours and J.L. Rothstein for sharing this book with me!

I received this book as an readers copy from the author. Loved the world building in this book as well as the take on Guardian angels. The author has a whole different take from what I have read in the past on the subject of Angels. I liked the diversity of characters, cannot wait to read the sequel. A page turner that will not only make it hard to out down, but also make you feel for the characters J.L. has created. Heaven Sent is absolutely divine.
