Secrets in Savannah earns 5/5 Champagne Cocktails...Engaging Fun!
Gin. Gangsters. Ghosts. Harper Lin has once again transported me to Savannah, Georgia, with all the roarin’ mirth and mayhem the 20s can offer. A well-written mystery with descriptive language, lively banter, and mores and societal norms depicting pre- depression, women’s lib, and civil rights. Becky Mackenzie, daughter of a tobacco plantation owner, learns that her friend Violet Darcy is dead...murdered, and her first thought is that Violet’s “wise guy” boyfriend had direct involvement. She and her best friend Martha Boudreaux had seen Violet the night before at a local juke joint drinking champagne, adorned in diamonds, and sporting a black eye. Of course, the report didn’t mention her trinkets and the shiner. Heading out the next night, Becky was excited to see Adam White, her hopefully-one-day-to-be her fiancé, but to her surprise she also sees Violet. Becky has, since she was young, had “special friends” who dressed strangely, spoke in a long ago style, and talked and told tales, but never scary or with malice. It was rare for these spirits to meet her outside of the confines of the Old Brick Cemetery, and even more rare to inhabit one’s body, but Violet has and she’s leaving clues. Fascinating drama, realistic characters, even the ghosts, and although you think you have it figured out...you don’t!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
I love this series, especially Becky. I just love her spirit. Everybody around her just have fun. She's very nice and sweet. She loves everyone and doesn't try to be uppity. Unlike her skimming cousin. That's why when her friend Violet shows up at the Speak easy flashing jewels she shows no prejudice towards only concern when they see bruises. Everyone knows her boyfriend runs with the mob. When Violet shows up dead Becky decided to investigate. She didn't tell anyone she was doing it also. When she finds a flask with the initials LB she thought open shut case but no it cause her to be chased after. Now her and her family are in danger. I love the paranormal aspects of the book also. I'm still waiting to see when her powers are fully developed and she knows how to use them. That would help her solve her mysteries a lot. I really love the series and the time period it's in. The author has done an excellent job on all the parts of it. Not only was it scary it had funny parts like her learning how to drive and throwing up. I'm very excited when a book comes out to see what is going to happen. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
I generally enjoyed the first two though I felt the second (and on) should really be a Kindle Unlimited title but this one was beyond ridiculous and depended on everyone completely overlooking obvious clues and a terrible macguffin.
(mild spoiler ahead) This entire plot revolves around two sets of peopel chasing a flask. No one ever gets it and it is NEVER explained why anyone wanted it. It’s basically simply used as a plot device to make the two groups chase the main character while MC does increasingly stupid things and nothing is ever explained regarding the flask. The plot is resolved but a showdown over said flask and again, nothing is explained and everyone just moves on.
I wish I could get my money back but especially my time back. Please do yourself a favor and don’t read this.
i'm gonna be completely honest i don't think i'll be reading any more of this series. Becky's wild and daring personality was fun for the first two books, but in this one it just felt genuinely idiotic. She tripped like a bajillion times. She hasn't learned anything at all, and i fear that she will continue to not learn anything. The characters are interesting, but i'm getting sick of Stephen's 'won't take no for an answer' attitude and Becky's weak-as-hell resolve with him. The cousin is also just getting too annoying. The most interesting characters (Teddy and Adam, in my opinion) have the least amount of screentime and are relegated to being the bf of the bff and the bf of the fmc. idk i'm kinda over it. The series has potential, but i just don't think i can do it anymore lol
I received an ARC in return for an honest review. Becky is a young woman, daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, growing up in the 20's - the 1920's. She loves her friends, her family, going dancing at speakeasies and her, heaven forbid, Yankee boyfriend. When her friend Violet is found brutally murdered, she appears to Becky. As Becky follows the ghost's. clues, she puts her life and her friends lives in danger. With so much suspicion amongst many of the characters, this mystery will leave you guessing until the last minute. A very enjoyable read
I love this Savannah mystery set so much. Being sent back in time to the speakeasy and proper young ladies is so much fun to read. Becky makes me laugh out loud at some of the things she gets up to. She also manages to get herself into some dangerous situations though, and always just manages to come away in one piece. A dedicated loyal friend, but take no crap off anyone.. including her stuck up cousin haha.
Becky and Martha’s friend Violet has been shot and Becky is sure it was Violet's boyfriend that did it, as Becky sees Violet and Strange things ever so often and is being watched she needs to find out who really did it or she and her friends could be next. I received this as an ARC and voluntarily choose to reveiw. I love this series as I can't wait for more.
What a good character cast. The bees knees of the 1920s with plenty of dancing, drinking and a good mystery. I still don't feel the whole Fanny character. I just don't like her and her snooty attitude. Violet's story was really the focus. Who killed her? Nice twist on who did it. I liked the book.
Really enjoyed this latest book in the series. I’m not usually a big fan of historical cozies but love this one. It is well written with strong female characters. The setting is beautiful. I look forward to reading the next book.
This is a fun story and our heroine seems to be a flaky but savy woman with a heightened sense of adventure and no ability to stay out of things that may not be her business. The writing style is easy to ready and the plot moves quickly to a satisfying conclusion in record time. This is great light summer reading.
