Undoubtedly, the best book in the market for Indian Economy. It provides all the essential data and topics in short and sharp. It does not dig deep into any problem of Indian Economy rather it provides all the essential information that is required for the students to prepare themselves for examination.
For the deep analysis of any subnject, this book will be not suitable for you.

being naive to indian economics, i decided to try this book to begin one, Though it was meant for CIVIL services preparation..
This book gives good gist of material to know in basic economics.Evolution of indian economy as mixed. Tranformation from industrial to now agriculture based economy.Adam smith versus C.Lange philosophy.
Economic reforms.have been covered with lucid reasons
i must say it is written in simple ,uncomplicated way so as to give a descent perspective to the reader.
Introduction of details regarding recent twefth year plans etc would be of more interest to students preparing fro civil services..
For me it was worth the money

This is an excellent book that introduces macro-economics to students without a background in economics. My understanding of public policy considerably strengthened after reading this book. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a detailed explanation of the conceptual basics of the (Indian) economy.

"Indian Economy" by Ramesh Singh is one gem of a book.
It provides insight on all aspects of India's economy, i.e., Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Money, Banking and Finance and Growth and Development.
The data representation, graphical presentation and the explanation of various economic theories are an absolute pleasure to eye and years. The book starts with the introduction of India's economy and the factors that we consider for calculating our national income and the growth on social and economic fronts.
It then slips into the importance of "Human Development Index" which is a key parameter in presenting the overall status of citizens in our country.
After setting the baseline, it dives into the history or the different phases of Indian economy, its planning and so on.
Only when we truly understand, what has been way above satisfaction and what has not, we could think about reform for a giant economy.
Thankfully, this book has presented the economic reform in the same order.
After going through the various reforms, an economist automatically drifts towards expected and unexpected benefits and the detriments.
This book justifies the above statement in probably the most respectful manner.
Various types of Inflations and Business Cycle have been neatly presented.

The book then gets on the highway. :)

One start enjoying the story about the percentage of people in various sectors (Agriculture, Manufacturing and Service sectors) of the economy along with the historical reasons and what needs to be done to get more people in the sectors which are the sectors of the future i.e. Tertiary and Quaternary sectors.
After understanding these key aspects of the Indian economy, this book talks about the financial aspects, Banking and Insurance in India.
The quality of this book lies in the fact that it gets more and more interesting as you go along.
The discussions of the various International Economic Organisations help to broaden the understanding on the fact that India is so deeply engaged with all those institutions and how critical role it plays.
The tax structure of India is complex undoubtedly, but this book does not make you feel that way. It in fact explains you the rationale behind it.
As mentioned above, we need to learn the history of India's economy to understand the reform like Goods and Service Tax and the recent measures that have been put in place to safeguard taxpayers.

Public Finance has been very briefly discussed. I would encourage motivated individuals to read "Public Finance" by H L Bhatia.
Like any other great book, this too discusses about the importance of Sustainability and the impact of climate change on India and the world from an economic standpoint.
It helps us to realize the ultimate fact that the things that we have for free are not free but priceless!

Thank you for reading the review. Appreciate it!

Horrible...many economics terms are mentioned without being explained ...you practically need to be a student of economics to understand this book...other concepts are just glossed over in the shortest and driest paragraphs possible...I started reading from the 9th edition...it was a damn good book ( just that edition)...everything was explained in details and I was enjoying it...but edition by edition, it just became more and more concise and factual , untill by the 16 th edition( the one which I bought) , it is nothing more than a book of random facts...

The book gives a brief overview of chronological developments in Indian economy from the past 100 years or so and describes in brief details the current status of the economy and finance. It also provides details about different financial instruments in the country. It might be a good read if you have already studied economics and finance. If not, you may not learn much out of it.

Not the best I would recommend for intellectual exercise but certainly helps a lot in the preparation of competitive examination. A book that complete the syllabus of civil services in a crips manner.
For those not preparing for competitions this book can brief you with the basic concepts of economics thus letting you explore in the world of economics.

More than general economic concepts, it is more related to the general and latest development in the Indian economy. So, if you want to learn the fundamentals of economics, this is not for you.

A good book for those who are well equipped with the habit of reading and have plenty of time. This book sometimes seems boring in its language and gives a feeling of being too bookish and formal for a novice.
