Herbert is a fun-loving boy who has the best of intentions but is usually getting into trouble doing something or other. His Uncle Horace is always there to help bail him and his family out of trouble. Herbert usually does things to excess, with his family egging him on, since his mother told him that discouraging children is a bad idea!
Hazel Hutchins Wilson was born on April 8, 1898 in Portland, Maine. She earned her B.A. from Bates College and a B.S. from Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts. Ms. Wilson was a professional librarian at the high school and college level and a lecturer at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She was the author of over 15 children's books. Her most famous books are the Herbert series, which was based upon the actions of her son and his friends.
Herbert is a boy who is always getting into trouble but emerges triumphant at the end of every chapter, somewhat like Eddie in the Carolyn Haywood books but with less guile than the Great Brain. The reading level is about third grade, as I recall.
This book, and others in the series, were among my favorites when I was a little girl. I recently picked this up and reread it, and discovered that I am still charmed by the humor.
