Oh my, it has been a very long time since I last swooned so hard over a book. Long Overdue is a wonderful read that’s romantic, lovely, empowering, and so beautifully positive. Morgan Meadows has written a book unlike any I have ever read before, and I cannot stop feeling all warm and fuzzy about it.
Blair is a quiet librarian, a woman who is struggling with the noisy intrusion of a speed-dating even in her library when she meets Lauren, the boisterous young woman who captures her attention. Their almost confrontational flirting is lovely, and their romantic passion later that night is even better. I loved how Lauren revealed her transgender nature, tentative, but not at all apologetic, and I loved how Blair so easily accepted that.
The fact that Blair becomes pregnant is a surprise to them both, and the emotions behind that are wonderful. Blair always thought of one day adopting children, and Lauren never thought she would be able to have kids. They barely know one another, but they like one another a lot. Blair wants to keep the baby, and Lauren wants to be there for them both, as part of a family.
The chapters follow the progression of the pregnancy, from month to month, and there is a wealth of love and tenderness to them, along with some wonderful humor. I so fell in love with these two women, and so desperately wanted them to become a couple, not just parents. The fact that Lauren designs wedding gowns, but is so in love with Blair that all she can think about is designing her a maternity gown, was such a delight. There are so many little details here that make their journey to parenthood as authentic as their budding romance, I could gush for days, but I do not want to spoil anything.
