Becoming enemies with your neighbor is never a good idea.
What’s even worse is when the neighbor is an incredibly hot client.
Baseball god Sevin Smith is no longer just the noisy bachelor living above me. Now he’s the MVP client I have to protect from a paternity scandal, and I’m not thrilled that my boss has me on the case.
That’s fine. I can pretend and work with a man who’s become my enemy.
But what I can’t pretend is not to be attracted to him.
Not to fall for his sexy laugh and easy smile. And I definitely can’t pretend I’m not falling for the spunky eight year old kid that may or may not be his.
Yes, I admit Becoming enemies with your neighbor—the sexy sports star—is never a good idea.
But falling in love with him might be the worst idea of all…

The Play is the first book in a new series by Natalie Wrye, but it is also a spin off so we already met the main characters in the Manhattan Nights series.

I was curious and excited to go visit Chicago and to know better Emily and Sevin.
Emily is a lawyer, and Sevin is a famous baseball player, they live in the same apartments building and they hate each other even before they meet in person because they are horrible neighbours.
But when life put them in the same team will they get over their dislike playing together in order to win the match?

Natalie Wrye writing sucked me in from the first page and it kept me captivated till the end, as it always happens with her books.
I recommend to read this enemies to lovers story so you can meet two more cute characters I didn’t talk about in this review but you can’t miss them.

I hate to say this but as a single dad baseball player book, none of it works. The baseball angle is a joke since Sevin' s team only plays one other throughout the entire book, he flies commercial and apparently has only one teammate. As far as the single dad part, the little girl Charlie shows up alone and at no time is there any sort of bonding between father and daughter other than Sevin acknowledging to himself that the child looks just like him. Now on to the firm that is hired to keep the child under raps as her mother is blackmailing Sevin that unless he pays a million bucks she's going to sell her story to the BLOGS.
Yes folks, A whole team is hired to prevent the BLOGS from finding out. Never mind ESPN, FOX SPORTS or the MLB NETWORK, throw in Page Six in the NY POST. Did I mention Charlie is eight years old? Did I mention that when she's dropped off at her father's building the cops can't be told the mother abandoned the child? Best yet, Charlie runs away and again no cops are called, no one initially goes looking for her, because you know, the paparazzi are privy to the cops calls.
What did work was the rom com/enemies to lovers like relationship between Sevin and Emily. Too bad that didn't remain the focus.

I am a newbie to this author and I cannot wait to read more I was hooked from the start.

Emily is a lawyer living in the same apartment block as Sevin Smith unknowing he is her noisy “having a good time” neighbour from the penthouse and also her very new client. She needs him to clean up his image but it’s not until she meets the baseball god one who she had no idea who he was and the man responsible for her lack of sleep when she turns up for one of the most important meetings of her career so far. But as much as she doesn’t want to be she’s attracted to him and hates him in equal measure. Could this be more than just chemistry and is she willing to find out?

Sevin Smith is new to the Windy City of Chicago and enjoying all the benefits that comes along with his fame but when his neighbour whom he hasn’t met yet calls the cops on him he decides that this is war. Little does he know how close they are going to be working together. He knows he needs to clean up his image but now he has another reason but will Emily be willing to give him a chance?

These two and their banter is awesome they battle each other at every point m, it’s a little emotional but when these two love they do it with everything. I am voluntarily reviewing an advanced copy of this book. 4.5* Read.

The Play is the first book in the Chicago Nights series by Natalie Wrye. I have read every single one of Natalie’s books and have loved them all. This is a standalone but it is a spin-off of Manhattan Nights and if you read that series then you might remember Violet’s assistant, Emily. She moved to Chicago to become a lawyer and now it’s her turn to find love in a big city.

Emily hates the neighbor upstairs. So much so that she has called the cops on him for keeping her up all night with moans and bed posts hitting the floor. She has no idea who occupies the penthouse but she is at war with them. But, in one business meeting of importance she finds out exactly who she is dealing with. Her new client, Sevin Smith, Baseball MVP. New to The Windy City from The Big Apple. She actually had no clue who he was until her best friend and co-worker told her who he was and then dropped the bomb that he lived in the penthouse in her building. She was new to The Firm so she couldn’t say no and lose her chance at showing her boss, Stephan Knight that she has what it takes fit into one of the best firms in the country. Yeah, she knew she was fucked especially after meeting him.

Sevin loathes his neighbor downstairs. He doesn’t know who it is but believes it has to be a woman with a stick up her ass if she is calling the cops every chance she gets. He was a twenty-something single man who enjoyed a good time. There was nothing wrong with that and right now, he wanted to do just that with this brunette he is in an elevator with. She wasn’t like the other women he was with. I mean she carrying a laundry basket for one and her hair was tied up in a messy knot but she was beautiful. Then, he makes a mistake at the very end. He doesn’t get her number. What he never expected was to see her again as one of his lawyers. He was up against the wall when it came to his reputation and she might just be the one to save him. Too bad they hate each other.

You know what they say about love and hate...oh, it’s on.

These two. They are in for a battle of a lifetime. I loved their banter and the storyline was awesome. It had its suspense, it’s angst, it’s emotional toll, and it’s heat. It’s all wrapped into a story about finding themselves and discovering new things. Figuring out what is important in life. I thought it was a wonderful ride with great characters. I am excited about the rest of the series and what’s to come!

Quotes:

“You might be the star athlete. But right now, we’re playing by my rules.

On paper these our hero is living his best life. Sevin is one of the top ranked baseball players in the MLB. He was voted MVP, have any woman he wants and a nice penthouse apartment. All is great except his uptight neighbor who lives below him. She complains of noise and loud music, calling the cops all the time. Emily has her dream job but she is new. When her boss gives her primary on a new case to protect a new client. She is nervous and excited until she realizes it’s Sevin, her noisy upstairs neighbor. Fun, slow burn story with a cute kid and and wayward cat. Quick read with great characters.

Pretty Scattered

The plot was pretty scattered and there were a lot of details that were so distracting. Why did the team keep flying back and forth between Chicago and AZ and commercial no less, and why did Emily and Charlie go with them? Why and how did they take the cat (without a carrier)? Why did they keep leaving the kid with random strangers (hotel babysitter, mascot)? The dropping of Emily saying a Farsi word twice, for no particular reason. The ridiculous response to the blackmail attempt and then the resolution of that issue (which totally didn’t make ANY sense). I generally liked these characters but overall, the plot of the story was a bit too messy and nonsensical to me.

The Play is the first book in the Chicago Nights series by the fabulous Natalie Wrye. This is a spin-off of her Manhattan Nights series! These characters are addicting and I was thrilled to see Emily and Sevin get a story. Together! Emily is working hard to make a name for herself. She doesn’t have much of a social life unless you count calling the cops on her loud, sex crazed, upstairs neighbor. When she finds out she has a new, high profile neighbor, she thinks this is her shot. Until she finds out it's her rude neighbor. Sevin Smith. Rich and famous baseball player. A late night run in with him, before he knows who she is should scare her off, but he's too sexy, too funny and too much. It's a bad idea. Sevin can not get involved with the woman trying to help him. He's just a job to her. Nothing more. But he can't stop thinking about her and it's driving him crazy. Is it possible he can finally have everything he's ever wanted? Baseball and the girl? I loved this story! It's fun, exciting, hot and goes deeper than I thought it would. There's more to Sevin than meets the eye and Emily is just the right woman to uncover the man he is inside.

It's no surprise why I love this author's writing -- she just keeps getting better and better with each book she releases. This is the first standalone book in the new Chicago Nights Series and if you've read Natalie's Manhattan Nights series, you'll recognize Emily from being Violet's assistant. I knew I was going to love Emily but I just didn't know how much of a surprise she was going to be. This isn't your typical enemies-to-lovers romance, but then again this author never writes "typical" stories. It's so much more than that. I don't want to ruin this read for anyone by giving too much away, so suffice it to say that there are quite a few surprises, lots of heat, crazy chemistry and two other "little" characters that will melt your heart. Another 5+ star read from my one-click author list! Can't wait for Sawyer's story!!

This is the first book I read by this author but certainly wouldn’t be the last. The Play is the first book in Chicago Nights series and a spin-off of Natalie’s previous series Manhattan Nights. I love a good sports romance and enemies to lovers story. It’s an amazing start to a new series. I couldn’t put it down. The synopsis is just the surface of what it is really about. It has so much depth, powerful and effortless storytelling which allowed me to connect with the characters. I loved that it was written in dual POV so I know what both characters – Emily and Sevin – were thinking at the specific time or moments. It was well developed, well written and well thought out.

Emily is a lawyer living in the same apartment block as Sevin who is a famous baseball player. They don’t know each other personally but they got involved in neighborly wars: she didn’t like the noise he was making and he loved riling her up.

description

Emily and Sevin were amazing even though they didn’t have a very good start being enemies and all. They are both so relatable and I loved their journey to happily ever after. Emily and Sevin are truly really great together. I loved their insta connection and attraction when they first met in the elevator. Their timing might be a little off because they both have so much going on and they are focused on different things: Sevin with paternity scandal and Emily with her career. When they are together everything just makes sense; they are just perfect for each other and exactly what they need in order to start anew. Both are instantly drawn to each other but can’t explain why exactly they feel this incredible pull toward each other. I loved their off the charts chemistry and how patient he was with her. I loved how they blossomed and thrived even though life had thrown them quite a few obstacles. They are each other’s match. I love their moments and dialogues and banter; how they are just drawn to each other, how gradually they let each other in and began to trust each other. The epilogue was just beautiful.

This book was simply wonderful and such a great read. It was flirty, sexy, fun, a bit suspenseful, tender, touching, heartbreaking and heartwarming. I can’t wait to read Sawyer’s book. I highly recommend it. They were what the other one needed.

It's rare that I read a book and just don't want it to end. I wanted to keep reading, I could not get enough of Sevin and Emily. I've had a crush on Sevin since he appeared in one of the earlier books, I couldn't even tell you why. But what's not to like, over the top hot, major league baseball player and all around nice guy. I also liked Emily, I liked her character, her penchant for wearing cartoon underwear and working as Vi's assistant.
Emily moves to Chicago, new job, nice living situation despite her new noisy neighbor upstairs who apparently really knows how to make a woman scream!
She meets Sevin now playing for Chicago's pro baseball team after he left NY behind. Sevin is her noisy upstairs neighbor, the one she's called the cops on, the one she's talked about on her building's neighbor app on her phone... that Sevin. Yes indeed! I'm not going to go into details about this book, because you have to read it and thoroughly immerse yourself into the relationship between these two characters. I will tell you that the plot is perfection, the characters are wonderfully well developed and there isn't one thing not to love about this book! It's a page turner from beginning to end. You'll just end up like me, not wanting the book to end and want more. Natalie is back at the top of her game in this gem. I absolutely loved this one!
Highly recommend!

Lawyer Emily Armand is in total shock when the crisis and emergency management firm she works for tasks her with the job of shielding top baseball player Sevin Smith from a potential publicly scandal, as not only is he her new client, he’s also her new upstairs neighbor. The one with a penchant for loud parties and even louder women. Fortunately for her, Sevin is not one to hold a grudge, well not much. However, an unexpected arrival has him rethinking his whole attitude to life and soon everyone is seeing a different side to him.

I really love this couple. Their wit and banter was so funny and entertaining and the sexual chemistry was a scorcher. Whilst complete opposites, I found them both extremely likeable characters. Their personalities complimented each other and when things took a more serious turn, I loved the support Emily gave to Sevin whilst he adjusted to what was possibly going to be his new normal.

The Play is a lighthearted, fun, enemies to lovers, romance with a few surprises and smidge of suspense. In my opinion, this author’s writing gets better and better and I look forward to reading the next scandalous tale she has in store for us.

I enjoyed them together and Charlie was a cute addition (though definitely a bit tkk knowledgeable for her age. Ha.) Felix was a great addition as well. So taking the story as just them was good.

But when adding in the overall picture.... In addition to several typos (even one in the preview for the next book that stood out), it fell a bit short for me and could have probably easily been fixed with an epilogue to put some closure on things... Like custody and their future together and if he really quit baseball for good (and why). Plenty of guys have families and still play pro. And what happened with her job in the long-run? Surely they can't have a secret relationship forever! And the story with Kimmy and Finley was odd. Like, he's at a party and was kissing a girl (ok, she was kissing him) and then Kimmy shows up with Finley out of the blue and that's it? Really? Scared him for life until he met Emily? And Finley was so vengeful to take place of "dad"? Why? It was clear who was dad to Charlie. So meh. The overall background just didn't work for me.

I listened to this book in audiobook format at night before I went to sleep so maybe I missed a few parts here and there, but overall this book was so confusing to follow...I don't know if that was just me or if that was a common opinion amongst other readers as well.

Plot:
This book is about two neighbors; one a lawyer and the other a professional baseball player. Our female character is the lawyer, who maintains her anonymity at the beginning of the novel because she is the one that keeps calling the cops on the noisy neighbor above her. She, is however, unable to maintain this secret identity much longer because she is assigned as his lawyer when he finds out that he may potentially have a daughter. When he finds out that she is the woman that has been calling the cops on him, he starts to be super jerky to her.

I don't really feel like writing much more about this book because it honestly gives me a headache and I would tell you to give it a try but it might give you a headache.

Emily and Sevin are both strong characters. Emily is caring but holds back because she thinks she only cares about her career. Sevin thinks he can not care about anyone or anything. While Sevin may have been a better man recently, in the past he was a real bad boy. Their journey is sweet and snarky and fun. The build up is masterful. The character development is nice. The story is unique. The writing is good. I like Sawyer and Naomi and Ben. Kara threw me. Stephen is somewhat of a jerk, unintentionally of course. The story includes workplace relationship, drama, mystery and cuteness. Charlie adds dimension to the book by cuteness and all the feels. The feud between Sevin and Emily gives the story kick.

I've never read this author and chose this book because it is book one in a new series. However, the story starts off as if I'm already supposed to be invested in these characters. Apparently, the H and h have a history of enemies and volatile encounters.... Which as a new reader, I'm woefully unaware.

So for the first couple chapters I'm kind of unimpressed by their interactions... I'm not titillated, I'm not drawn in, and I don't really connect with either main character. By the end, I'm kind of confused as to why they fell in love...

And the H as a father?!? What WAS that?!

I swear, it's like the kid was an afterthought. Dad and daughter had no interaction. It was the oddest handling of an abandoned child, who is most likely yours.

Dud as a father, dud as a hero, and dud as a story.

Didn't give 2 stars because I'm somewhat intrigued by friend, Sawyer.

This author was new for me. I found it to be an enjoyable slow-burn with well-developed characters. Sevin and Emily are a good pairing and balance each other well. As with many books these days, there are appearances of characters from other books, which might have notched up my rating had a disclosure of this being a somewhat companion novel. It's a personal thing that I find frustrating when characters from other books pop up with no warning. Overall, it wasn't a huge distraction to the story. In ending, I would have liked a bit more of a settled ending but it did end with a definite conclusion. I'd recommend it for a light and fun read.

Everybody will love Felix the Cat

Another great read by Natalie Wrye. This author can do no wrong for me. Always great characters with a lot of depth to them. A wonderful storyline, even I loved Felix the cat! I loved this fast pace suspenseful, romantic story of Sevin and Emily. Emily has been put on the case of the much hated noisy neighbour Sevin! She has to prove paternity with her team for Charlie his supposed 8 year old daughter! Deborah his ex girl friend is blackmailing him for 1 million dollars so that the paternity case does NOT go public and she then totally disappears. Is Sevin’s play boy days coming back to bite him? Who takes Charlie and why?
A well deserved 5 star ⭐️ highly recommended read!!

A sweet and spicy ride😍

I was pulled in the minute Sevin and Emily hit it off in the elevator. The star baseball player and party animal and the complaining neighbor, both of them are instantly attracted to each other but have no idea that they have been hating on each other for weeks now.
Also, things get complicated when Emily is assigned as the lawyer for Sevin's possible scandal and Sevin gets a shocker in the form of a eight year old daughter he doesn't even know is his or not.
I loved the way these two fight and banter and my....resist what's been brewing between them both.
I loved how funny Emily is and her fascination with cartoons especially wearing them😉😂.
Also I loved little charlie. She's a sweet girl and smart also.
I loved Sevin and Emily's journey together.💖💖

I’ve had this one on my “To Read” shelf in my Nook for a while. It’s summer. This one is about baseball. It’s time to read it. It was OK. Not great, but OK. Some interesting but not great mysteries are revealed throughout the story. There is an adorable little girl. There is one very obnoxious best friend. And at the center of it all is a case of mistaken identity. The Play moves along steadily until the very end when things start to accelerate almost to the point of confusion. I’m not sure I’d recommend The Play, but I wouldn’t discourage you from reading it.

When you hate your neighbor before you even meet them and then have to work with them, it can be for a very fun and entertaining time. Well, for the reader of the story, at least. Emily and Sevin are smoking hot together and the tension just adds on to their chemistry. The story sucks you in and keeps you wanting to keep guessing how they will finally give in.

I had a hard time with this story and the writing POV. It started as if you're jumping right into someone's head and you're left trying to catch up to what they know, who they know and what the inside jokes are. It was hard to like either character; I couldn't attach to them emotionally. My copy had a lot of typos, formatting and grammatical errors. I gave up reporting them after a while. Whomever proof-reads for this author must just skim through it...much like I should have.

Sevin has a big problem, several actually. He has a downstairs neighbor that keeps calling the cops on him, his knee is killing him, and there's a child that shows up on his doorstep. Oh, and the downstairs neighbor is also the lawyer that's working on his paternity case. Tons of chemistry between Emily and Sevin, the kid and the cat are adorable, and there's baseball. HFN and a standalone, although it's the first in a series and the other players will be fun to read about too.

I loved this first book in the Chicago Nights series! It's a standalone story, but a few characters from the Manhattan Nights series make their appearance as well. This is the story of Emily and Sevin.
Emily hates her noisy upstairs neighbour. But when she and Sevin meet in the elevator of their apartment building, there is immediate attraction between the two of them. It really is a great storyline and I loved Charlie! 😍

Another amazing story in the series! I have been waiting on Sevin's story for a while. It was well worth the wait! Sevin and Emily have instant chemistry, but there are secrets that have to be addressed, on both sides. Can they find their way past the secrets to their HEA? Read and find out, you won't regret it!

The Play is the first novel in Natalie Wrye's new series called Chicago Nights. It's also a crossover from Manhattan's Nights. The story, was fun, flirty, entertaining, enemies to lovers, and I really enjoyed it. The characters were genuine, I liked their back and forth banter, they kept me laughing, and I can't forget the sparks between these two. I liked the secondary characters too. I can't wait for Sawyer and Naomi's story.
