Book Review: Restoring Dover
An exceptional read!

Restoring Dover is a beautifully written historical fiction piece that alternates between events occurring presently (1987) to short historical snippets that lead to an uncovering of truths and treasures.

The adventure begins in October of 1216 in Norfolk, England with brothers, Walter and Peter who have been traveling by way of an ox cart. We find out that they have serendipitously acquired a fortune unbeknownst to the king when he left them behind. They set up a plan to change their names and become fishmongers, to conceal themselves from the king and his people when they realize the brothers have the king's valuables. It is from this event that the subsequent moments transpire.

After some unforeseen and tragic circumstances, the Loring family was given the news that Mrs. Loring was named an heir of an estate in Georgia. Due to this, the family made the journey from Chicago to Georgia to the Dover Manner in 1987. It could not have come at a better time. From the moment they arrived, they tended to the substantial land plot and the forsaken (yet full of character) home that needed deep restoration and care. The work was quite cathartic and it served as a time for the family to reconnect. While they tended to their home, they found out piecemeal about the home’s past and the people surrounding it. A quest ensued to find answers and the well-hidden treasure trove.

Restoring Dover has a clear, engaging plot with well-developed characters. It is more than the restoration of the manner in Georgia, but a restoration of a family. Additionally, the unveiling of the people that surround this home is the true treasure found.
