An Alien Shifter Romance

He’s such a creep.

Xan’tor is his name. I saw him among the other aliens at the auction. He couldn’t take his intensely yellow eyes off me. He didn’t even bid on me.

But when I was taken to my new owner’s spaceship to be impregnated, he crashed into it and ripped open the cage. I don’t think he even knows why. He’s all gruff and brooding. Okay, he’s freakishly strong.

And I guess he may have rescued me. Kind of.

But he’s blue with white spots and he has spikes everywhere. The bulge in his pants twitches uncontrollably whenever he looks at me.

He has a freaking tail!

And he won’t let me leave.
I really should hate him.

So why do I get butterflies every time he looks at me?

And why the hell did I kiss him?

What in the dumpster fire.....

I couldn't finish it. I could. not. do. it.

First off, I get so annoyed when the main character is a virgin and the first time is a painless, euphoric experience. Like, come the eff on.

Secondly, the first two sex scenes (I only got through the first 2 and had to quit) the author describes the sex sounds as "squelching"
description
I can't make this up:
"There's a wet squelch, and then he's inside..."
"Wet squelching noises greet every thrust in and out, and he slides very easily now. I'm being fucked by an alien."

description

Like what did I just read. And the plot?

I hate to say it but I really didn't love this book. Compared to Calista's Caveman series this one was a total dud. The story line (aside from the individual characters) was something that's been done many times before and I guess I'm just over the cliche kidnapping and sold only to be re stolen by a future mate trope. I also did not really see much chemistry between the characters at least not at first, it was more curiosity than anything else. () I will probably read the next one out of blind curiosity but I really hope the author throws some more originality in there and gives Mila's sister a more unique story.

Tough war general with a really soft side to him. Lots of humor, thanks Calista. Loved this story.

So I've found a new alien series to try. After Maven, it could go either way, so I tried to go in open-minded.

Mila is on an occupied Earth, she and her sister working as Resistance fighters. Both get captured, but this story follows Mila. She's sold on an alien auction, but catches the eye of a giant blue alien who then abducts her (because he knows her buyer will kill her, trying to force their not-so-compatable bodies to have sex).

What she *DOESN'T* know is that Xan'tar is the big blue monster that killed her brother when Earth was conquered. He shape-shifts, so she doesn't recognize him as the leader of the alien force that overtook earth. She also doesn't know that his NEXT job is to wipe out Earth's resistance force.

In the meantime, she meets his merry band of mercenaries for hire, falls in love with him, and... here's where everything makes me all skeptical-face. First, she's out to steal everything from him. And she's BAD at it. Then she's out to save her sister, and kill herself in the process with anything she can come up with. Then Xan'tar is all, "Isn't she cute and smart and brave? She steals my shit, sucks at subversion, gets all attitude, and wants to blow herself up. I totally want that. I'll pay six million for it, actually."

!!!!?????!!!!! I. can't. even.

Worse, I couldn't tell the difference between Mila and Emma. Honestly, I couldn't. At the end, Calista tells us that Mila is the calmer one - I never saw that. She barely ever held still, for the love of Pete. And she was hot-headed and a pain in the ass. So... yeah, I had problems with it.

More, I had a LOT of problems with the writing. It was not hugely descriptive. The writing was flat, which made good characters (the males, anyhow) come off as flat, too. Description was 'like an X-wing from Star Wars'... and you're supposed to imagine the inside of the spacecraft from that. TOTAL cheats, so that she didn't have to actually *write* descriptive passages. They're apparently tedious and in the way of her ADD/need for action driven plots with no development.

So was the story good? The premise was. The characters weren't bad, as long as they weren't the humans... neither of which were anything special or interesting. But I needed better authorship, so it bought some stars. We'll see how the next one is...

Woah! This is actually the first book of this genre that I couldn't finish. It's not that it's BAD (cause i've read worst stories and could finish them because somehow there was something pulling me and keeping me curious ever so slightly)...but this story was just boring to me. I feel so bad for thinking it too.

The initial concept intrigued me. I normally love when the male character is interested first, feels pulsions toward the main girl and kinda suffers in silence until the hot stuff happens and the passion is released. Sadly, after Xantor saves Mila, the pulsion that he felt at the auction, that caused him to do something so reckless and out of the ordinary, just gets lost right away. I don't know how to explain it. The whole concept is thrown right out of the window and it's like his interest in her becomes so tame that it almost makes no sense.

Mila started off okay-ish. I feel like I could have grown to like her stubborn personality but she ended up being more and more obnoxious as the story went. She was reckless, selfish and very inconsistent.

Their was no passion or evident real interest between Xantor and Mila, so their sex scene actually felt like it came out of no where. There was just no appeal in the act. It was Mila's first time and somehow, everything went smoothly, no pain, just perfect, even if the guy was well hung.

I actually decided to DNF right after the sex scene. I just couldn't get myself to continue it. I just felt disappointed and uninterested. I actually kinda feel bad because like I said, I never leave a book unfinished.

Lost potential. :(

Mila got captured by the bad aliens who took over earth. She was put on the auction block and sold to a nasty looking baron. He intended to use her as breeding stock. Just when he had her up on the breeding table, there was a hole cut into the top of his ship. A big blue alien dropped through the hole and snatched up Mila and jumped back through it. Xan'tor recognized Mila as being his mate. But she was so much more than just that. She was a warrior and part of the resistance fighters. He wooed her, but there was a problem. Her sister, Emma was missing and feared dead. Or captured which was worse. Oh twists and turns, of love and honor. This is definitely a fast moving story and an adult version of aliens and space. You will have to read the book and I recommend it highly. I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. You won't waste your money buying this book.

He was blue like the sky with white spots like clouds. Honey, you f.ing the sky. Or you in Chicken Little. It's the most ridiculous book I've ever read. I cringed and my brain hurt to go through it. I don't get the reviews. Do yourself a favor, don't buy it.

I liked this book overall, but I did think Mila ultimately got over Xan'tor's part in the invasion of Earth kind of easily. Did I want more angst and anger from her? I don't know exactly (because my angst-tolerance is a little low right now), but I wanted something...more. (And, yeah, I can't figure it out more than that. Basically, I wanted more something of which I'm not sure what.)

That said...aliens! I do like me some aliens. Even if they're helping subjugate the Earth and all her inhabitants. Okay, maybe I don't like ALL those aliens. The slimy ones leave me cold. But the others are a-okay. And when they finally take a stand and make a moral choice to do what's right no matter how it messes with their ability to earn some coin, EVEN BETTER.

Anywho. Xan'tor and Mila. He's the alien who swoops in and rescues her from a terrible future as a breeder for an awful alien. She's a kinda clueless resistance fighter who stumbles onto the right path more by accident than intent. (Also, the fact that the core tenant of the resistance philosophy is to take out as many aliens and captured human women as possible if they're ever in a position to do so kinda bothers me. I get that it's guerrilla warfare and all that, but that feels very much like they've already given up winning and taking back Earth and have just decided to go out in a blaze of glory.)

I feel like I'm being nitpicky seeing as I really did enjoy the book. Let's face it, hunky aliens and their mismatched crew who are all big softies at heart are FUN. And human women who tame them with equal parts grit and sweetness do it for me. So there you go.

I prefer the caveman alien series this is more junkyard/spaceship scifi urban dystopian vibes than cool primitive alein planet and frankly thats the main alien setting i love is stranded on an alien planet based nature more avatar less alien vs predator.
I still enjoyed it and the overall plot about the elder race etc too but yeah might stick to my primitive barbarian mate type series.

Well I liked this. Some parts were really good like the moon they found but I did find the female to be very accepting off things and the romance came out of no where. I liked all the aliens and the descriptions. The story line was very basic.

DNF

This may be a good book, I just didn’t get far enough in to say.

The MMC was in charge of conquering Earth, a direct link to slavery, misery, rape, etc.
Then we learn he has actively led army’s to conquer and subjugate 15 sentient worlds.

I don’t like characters that only turn good after they fall in love. I need some sort of conscience before that. Some sort of regret…some reason to care about them outside of their selfish desires.
At least if their going to be the love interest.

Sadly DNF for me at 50%. The heroine is TSTL. How many times is the hero going to tell the heroine how good her space talk is getting? We get it, she learned in her sleep.
The book is long and a lot of explanation is just "elder species" which is convenient for a bunch of things.
There heroine actually assumes she can fly a spaceship because of playing a video game with her brother as a kid. She is constantly asking the mercenaries obvious escape questions 'oh hey, so how exactly do you make the autopilot work' and they are like 'oh here it's these specific buttons, random woman we just met....

Anyways the virgin sex was of course, absolutely perfect with no pain and only orgasms even though he is described as huge and multi shaped somehow....

🤷 Maybe I'll come back to it later. I was holding to find a new series but this is just too long for a trope plot.

This story was boring and awful to the point that I got halfway, left it alone for months, and then promptly came back, skimmed through to the end, and just blatantly regretted wasting my time on it.

Mila was just ugh. She's supposed to be a badass, fighting for a resistance against aliens, and Xan'tor is supposed to be hot and a mercenary and it was just exhausting seeing them be together. I don't know what it was about this book that made me hate it so much, but I genuinely can't say that I recommend it, because I don't. It's on KU if you're interested, but don't waste your money on just this book. Buy something else.

Too inconsistent

I really wanted to like it. I love other books by this author, but this one just didn't resonate with me. The characters were inconsistent in how they were described, on one page his tongue is rough, 2 pages later its smooth. She is fawning all over him and yet she tries to blow herself up. Says she isn't stupid but runs off and gets caught the min he turns around. I could not stand her any longer so I did not read past the 50% mark. If by that time I am not engaged or interested in either the plot or characters, there is no point wasting my time.

4 1/2 stars!

Well-written story with lots of action, hot and unexpected alien species, and intriguing locations in space. The author does a great job making what could be a boring black outer space setting into a place that I would love to visit and I don’t think I will ever be able to think about the moon the same ever again.

Mila and Xan’tor’s story was very fascinating to me, especially because I can clearly see how the author is trying to remove any expectations as to what aliens could look like. She doesn’t feature tiny green men, or just flying dragon men, not that there is anything wrong with either. I love several great series that features aliens similar to those descriptions.

Just take a few of the aliens that run with Xan’tor’s crew. One is in the shape of a wheel, with multiple tentacles that can stretch with eyes on the end. Another has metal arms. Even the description for Xan’tor is quite different. He is blue with white spots, has bright yellow eyes that are often described as two suns, scales, with small spikes across his shoulders, and a tail with fur along it. He also has a war form, which you will have to read about ...

Mila is a human resistance fighter that is captured while her and her sister were breaking into one of the guarded alien posts. She is brought to an auction and sold, but before she could be bred as the alien wanted to, she was stolen / rescued by Xan’tor. Mila now wants to find out about her sister and do that maximum amount of damage she can to the bugulgs. She is also attracted and falling for the big blue alien who keeps rescuing her.

Unfortunately he works for the bugulgs that originally invaded earth and he might have been the one to plan that Mila’s brother died in ...

I don’t want to accidentally provide any spoilers so I am going to stop here.

Xan'tor is a rather complicated individual. He is all about the honour he can bring to his family. They're alient aristocracy with an eye on the throne. He uses is military strategies to lead invaions, like the one that took over Earth. He's a Mercenery and he may not like what he does but he does it for his people.

Mila is a resistance fighter who lost her brother in the first days of the invasion. She and her sister attempt to sabotage the invaders but get caught and are slated to be sold as breeding stock to the highest bidder. But when Xan'tor catches a glimpse of her, he bargains to "buy" her instead.

But will the fledgling passion between them survive when she realises his part in the Invasion and death of her brother?

Intense passion, sci fi daring-do and leading characters with chemistry and real rapport. Xan is a conflicted hero (always the best kind of hero!). A brilliant mix of possessive devotion and stubborn alien, with a tad WTH have I got in to! Eart girls are NOT easy to understand. Mila is a strong personality with inner strength, an intense commitment to freeing Earth with a bit of naivety thrown in.

Can't wait to see what happens with Emma now!

Heather's Notes
I made it 20% and I am done. The hero is not a hero, and he is not a good anti hero. The plot also has a lot of holes, maybe she sews them up and I am not in the mood to read more and find out. The herione is lackluster, she is suppose to some awesome resistance fighter but she hasn't really done anything. Even the freaking phone is annoying, who would even want to listen to that, and the advise she gives if awful. Maybe it is suppose to be funny, but it misses the mark with me. Moving on to something better

Not a lot of depth- disappointed

The male and female MC just didn't seem to have that spark a lot of fated mates I choose to read about do and the conversations just fell flat. It was like reading a book that is equivalent to a Jr high school play and I wanted a robust read.
Example: There was a lot of talk about the male MC and his intensity but he didn't have that intense personality or Intense interactions with the female MC, just lots of creepy staring like the title says and boring conversations. When I read sci Fi or fantasy romance, the point for me is to see a relationship that is out of this world, magical, and INTENSE in every way, something that is almost completely unrealistic for humans to have. This kind of felt like adults in a teenage relationship. 😔 I like my male Aliens and Monsters to have an exactly perfect blend of possessive, protective, gentle, loving and devoted personalities that can only be seen in books 😁. I would read non paranormal romances if that wasn't the case.

Weaker in the beginning and middle, but makes for an interesting end. The romance was a little hard to wrap my head around, mostly just insta-lust, but these characters grew on me. It was mostly just too long in the middle, where almost nothing happens. So much could have been cut and the pace would have been much better.

I think I appreciated the conflict of Xan’tor’s honor and duties and feeling for Mila the most, as his issues were the hardest to overcome. Mila sticking to her guns, in more ways than one, also makes sense for her character so I’m glad it was Xan’tor who had to make the big change and find a new way to do things. I also feel like this makes up for the one big issue they have, at least a little.

The war and warrior aspect was a fun departure from the kind of alien romances I usually read. I like this author a lot and I feel like I can trust her story telling skills in a series like this, so I’ll keep going at some point.

This held my attention, but just barely. I had to put it down a few times, because it was just a bit over the top for me. The plot was decent, but the characters weren't written well. For the most part, they were flat for me. I felt Mila was all over the place, she could do it all one moment, but yet be oblivious the next. It's hard to like a character like that because you can't balance the 2 different parts of the character. Xan’tor was a little more likable, than Mila, so he was the reason I kept reading, though he could have been better. The "Creep" part didn't suit Xan'tor in my opinion. I kept hearing the soundtrack to Radiohead's "Creep" playing in my head & he sure didn't fit that IMO. The end felt rushed and there were a lot of loose ends that had me puzzled at why they weren't wrapped up. I won't want to read more in the series as I didn't like the secondary characters enough to want to read about them.

I wanted to love it

This one just felt a bit slow and bland to me. I finished it and the story is good - this is nothing against the author - this was just my personal feel of the book. For some reason I couldn't sink into it and the H sarcasm always went right over the h head. Plus she was all about her trauma & blowing herself up for her cause (brainwashing much?), no matter what anyone else had to say or who was catching feels. She was judgy and spoiled in a way. I wanted this to be a little more my style. The H was hot, flawed and loving, but a bit slow to find his conscience & be honest. I guess I just didn't feel the spark between them. On the PLUS side, there was a "villain" twist that was only slightly suspected, so it catches you off guard in a "no way!" kind of way. I love writing like that!

The story was very compelling and I had to know what happened next. My problem and the reason I only gave the story 2 stars was the hero made some really bad decisions.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

The hero was the general who led the invasion that led to Earth being conquered and enslaved. The heroine's brother, Evan, was a Marine who died in that invasion. We don't know if the hero killed him himself or if his troops did. Either way, the hero is the reason her brother is dead.

She forgives him. He helps her rescue her sister and takes over his Clan so now he is the head of his Clan. He joins the heroine's resistance of the invaders against the Bulugl.

So the hero redeems himself sort of. He knew what he was doing when he invaded their planet. He knew Earth had done nothing wrong and he did it anyway.

Unique story in the genre

There’s more sci-fi plot than usual and although it seems too big for the story it might make the series really interesting.
I enjoyed the characters and it was mostly a fun read. The steam factor was a bit low and could have used a little more sensuality and better descriptives.
Overall the polar was good and on par for the genre. The underlying secrets that the reader knows but the heroine doesn’t was too much, too big and made it hard to wait for resolution. Other than that it was an easy read with some good story and decent romance.
As a stand alone I wouldn’t rate it as high but I like the series arc that’s being built and look forward to the next book. If the kinks are worked out in the next relationship then the series will be great.

The plot is actually really interesting it’s just that I’m not sure it was done very well. The story will remind you that human women are being abducted and sold as breeders against their will and it’s a dark subject but the book kinda glances at it so it feels awkward. There was also an attempted assault but all these serious topics are made lighthearted or casual so it’s uncomfortable for me.
The book lacks emotion.
The characters are super cool… except for the main couple which sucks since the whole story is from both their povs.
It got better at the end but I’m not sure if the writing style just didn’t vibe well with me because it was a struggle to read majority of this.
Was gonna give this book 1star but I really did like a few things and basic idea was cool.

Earth has been taken over by an alien race. Sisters, Emma and Mila, are part of the Resistance. They enter an enemy facility in order to gain insight on them. Mila is caught, capture and sold to the enemy. She is recused by Xan’tor, a massive blue alien warrior. Mila wonders if she will ever find her sister and get back to Earth.

A totally new series by Calista and I love it. It is different from her other series. Yes the woman are still strong. But their purpose is defined from the very beginning of the story. There is humor and of course great Inter-relationship scenes. Looking forward to the next chapter.

interesting start to series

Pulled me in on the 1st chapter, which means keep reading till finished. The story starts off with sisters who are separated running from aliens, one sister is caught Mila and is taken to be auctioned and that’s where it takes off. Xantor an alien mercenary kidnaps Mila after she is sold to one of his clients. Mila is a resistant fighter, pretty much open minded, but with staunch views in saving earth, Xantor an alien warrior and mercenary, loyal to his clan, and takes jobs that is not noble to provide financial aid to his clan. I found the story intriguing, the main couple adorable and Xantor crew a hoot.
