Thoughts with side commentary (as all the books in this series are novella length and therefore short, it is hard for me to take a lot of notes)
⛩️ Firstly, I'd like to thank the author for providing me with a free ebook copy. This in no way effects my opinions ⛩️ Wasn't expecting that first chapter 😧 ⛩️ I never thought I'd see the day that I say I miss Aadan and his stupid goatee ⛩️ Oh, wait, there he is.. ⛩️Don't you love it when a book kind of ends on a cliffhanger?
This is another excellent addition to The Elements of Kamdaria series. Talise’s story continues as she travels closer to obtaining the elusive and mysterious amulet and tries to evade the Kessoku while journeying to and helping different parts of the kingdom.
I like that the character development and world-building grow with each book. In Smoke Gate, for example, we are introduced to Wendy’s family. Her parents, grandmother, aunt, and uncle are extended versions of Wendy, and it’s clear where she gets her charm, beliefs, and morals. We also read and learn more about Claye and his devotion to Talise (though I still question his motives and sincerity).
Talise’s journey takes a more emotional/spiritual turn in this story. Though there is still a significant amount of action, the story focuses equally on Talise’s inner conflicts. Talise struggles with trusting people, letting people in, knowing what kind of ruler she wants to be, learning how to balance, and more. She suffered and continues to suffer from loss and rejection. Eben, a new mentor-like character and guardian of the amulet, teaches Talise about the amulet and the untold history of Kamdaria which, in turn, helps Talise on her journey toward ruling Kamdaria.
Then there’s Aaden’s reappearance!!! As Aaden was absent in the previous book, I was impatiently curious to find out what happened to him. Smoke Gate fills in the gaps (a little), and we get a small glimpse of what he’s been up to. Without giving too much away, it was interesting to see him try to balance his orders from the Kessoku and his obvious protective feelings toward Talise and her friends. Hopefully, in the next book, Moody will explore Aaden’s story further.
This is a quick and well-paced story that I enjoyed as much as the others in the series. I’m excited for the next book, Vine Gate, which comes out on May 12th!
Kay L Moody keeps impressing with this series , and the covers are great . The main characters have grown before your eyes as you've read this series and they keep getting better and better . Her writing has you vested in the characters early on and you have to know what's going to happen to them when they do something good or bad lol you can't go to sleep until you know and by then no way your putting this book down until it's finished and you have no choice . Don't take my word for it . But don't miss out on a fantastic series and a author who from now you will keep up with her books lol. So go get this series and by the time you get here you will be so glad you did . So buy it , read and enjoy it then come back and leave reviews , your review might be the reason someone else buys it . Stop reading this and go get this series you will not be disappointed .
Smoke Gate is the sixth book in this series and it picks up right where the last book left off. We follow Talise as she goes to meet the guardian of the amulet. There she not only learns facts about herself and who she is going to be but also if the original ruler and “father” of shaping.
We have a couple scenes with Aaron and we are left unsure of his loyalties. I personally hope it’s all a ruse and he comes back to Talise’s side but who knows!
The characters are growing and becoming more responsible and aware of their own selves as well as their role in this battle. From book 1 you get a sense of who you’re going to grow attached to and it does not waver.
Kay L Moody does a fantastic job creating a world where you can escape to and bringing to life some extraordinary characters. This is a 4.5 book
This is another exciting instalment in this series! It’s action packed as we follow Talise and the choices that have to be made. The storyline continues to grow and develop as does the amazing world building and there are some awesome characters, some old, some new. A highly addictive series, can’t wait for the next instalment!
I received an eARC of this book via the author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.
Smoke Gate by Kay L. Moody is the sixth installment of the novella series The Elements of Kamdaria. After finishing the previous novella, I knew that this installment would be action packed and break my heart. Y’all Kay L. Moody delivered! The book opens with a chapter from Aaden’s point of view. We haven’t heard from him since Flame Crown, and it was a relief to know he wasn’t dead. But I may have chose death over his betrayal 😭
Talise is still adjusting to her new normal as princess. She isn’t used to making decisions for other people. She sees her soldiers, the ones that have willingly followed her, as something else for her to protect. It isn’t easy for her to relinquish that and allow them to do their job of protecting her. But this isn’t the only new normal for her, Talise is also dealing with Aaden’s disappearance. He didn’t return when he promised, and now she questions if she can trust him and mourns that betrayal.
At her side and having never left it are Wendy and Claye. During River Gate, Talise and her friends realize that there is a spy among them, feeding information about their location and Talise’s security to Kessouku. The question is who. Talise doesn’t want to suspect her friends, but all fingers point to it being Wendy or Claye. Wanting and needing to believe in them, Talise pushes aside her doubt and doesn’t trust her gut. Bad move in my opinion! Wendy works with the head general of Talise’s soldiers and knows everything. Claye is there as her friend and support, but in truth I can’t help but question his motives. During River Gate, he made it quite clear he has feelings that go beyond friendship for Talise, feelings she doesn’t return. These feelings feel forced and unnatural to the character that was portrayed in the first part of the series. While Talise is questioning Wendy, I question Claye’s true intentions.
Smoke Gate delves deeper into the world of Kamdaria than the previous books. As Talise has been touring the kingdom as the long lost princess, she learns some interesting things about Kamdaria’s history, things that contradict what she was taught. Not only that but we get to meet the mysterious cloaked stranger from the last book who offered Talise knowledge about Kamdar’s amulet, the powerful artifact the Kessouku are searching for. I love the world-building here, but I love Talise’s reaction to it even more. It’s raw, heart-breaking and real. As she’s already begun to question her father’s motives, the things she learns from the protector of the amulet break her heart. What will she do going forward? This question plagues Talise.
Overall, I really enjoyed Smoke Gate. I think this is my favorite installment of the series to date. If you enjoy YA fantasy, political intrigue, and rebellions, I highly recommend it!
Aaden's back! I won't lie, the last book felt like something was missing because he wasn't in it. At all.
Smoke Gate begins with Aaden trying to gain the trust of the Kessoku...who want to take down the royal family which means capturing and killing the princess. Aaden is assigned that particular duty. Does he finally see things their way and will he follow through? And if he doesn't, what will that mean for the trust he is trying to gain?
In the meantime, Talise is still trying to find the amulet before the Kessoku, as well as fix things for her people in the Gate. She is nearly captured several times and has to make some crucial decisions. Would she take a weapon of power that has the potential of turning her evil? What if hiding it only ensured that the enemy would use it instead? And as she becomes increasingly convinced that there is a spy on the inside, will she be able to trust anyone? If so, who will she choose to trust?
Despite all the action, this book felt a little slower and more introspective than the previous books in the series, but it also gave us a glimpse of Talise's developing character and morals, as well as a greater insight into the motivations of Wendy and Claye. It also filled in a lot of backstory on the founding of Kamdaria in a way that was intriguing, but utterly surprising. This book was a fantastic new chapter of the Kamdaria series and I can't wait for book seven!
I received a free ARC of Smoke Gate from the author and have reviewed it willingly.

Initial Thoughts
I was super excited to read this installment of The Elements of Kamdaria. It’s been so long since we’ve heard from Aedan and I saw on Instagram that “a certain character” was going to make an appearance” in this book.
Some Things I Liked
THAT 👏 AEDAN 👏 CHAPTER 👏 I loved it. I was so excited to see him back. It was short lived but it gave me hope that he’ll be back with my favorites soon enough. Avatar the Last Airbender vibes. I loved the scenes with Talise and her mentor. They reminded me of the scenes when Aang went to the various Air Temples. I loved the hidden kernels of wisdom in everything Talise saw. Talise’s journey. This segment of the story was primarily about Talise and her journey as a shaper and the potential savior her people need. I loved seeing how she went from still somewhat unsure of herself to deciding exactly what she needs to do. Moral grey-ness. The scene with the fight with the Kessoku, in particular. I love morally grey situations and characters. Talise saw first hand how difficult war can be and how it can devastate families.
Series Value
I can’t wait to keep reading this series. I love that this series comes out in novella “episodes” that always leave me wanting more.
Final Thoughts
I loved this installment in Talise’s story. I can’t wait to keep reading and this story really got the gears turning in my head about what other characters I’d like to see more of in future installments.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Recommendations for Further Reading
Vine Gate by Kay L. Moody – I haven’t read the next installment of this series, but I definitely will once it’s available. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – if you enjoyed the competition component, the class and economic issues, and the moral grey-ness in the conflicts, try this series by Suzanne Collins.
Book Title: Smoke Gate (The Elements of Kamdaria Book 6)
Author: Kay L Moody
My rating 1-5
Edit quality:5 World Building:4 Characters : Main character 5 ; Supporting Characters 4
My attempt at a summary:
This is the 6th book in the series. Talise, poor Talise is afraid to trust anyone. Or believe in anyone, including her friends. We do have a few glimpses of Aaden, but unless his character shapes up, I'm not expecting much.
Talise finds and discovers a way to fix everything but it comes at a high cost. The book delves into her character and her worthiness to be able to pay the price and sacrifice who she is to finally heal her kingdom.
Spoilers/ Suggestions. Another reviewer/reader warned me about this book. I said to myself : I'll be prepared, Its fine, I'm fine. IM NOT FINE. I am so frustrated beyond belief. If anyone has any delusions of grandeur about royalty and how amazing life would be, they need to read this series.
I know its not the end of the series, I know this. I just have persevere.

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. As much as Aaden has aligned himself with Kessoku, he is nowhere comfortable with their actions towards the citizens of Kamdaria; especially what is planned for the ruling members of the empire. As Talise and her company makes their way to the Smoke Gate, she is seeking the Guardian of the Amulet and prove that she can be the defender of Kamdaria. Finally meeting the Guardian will become a strange journey to prove herself to him. But it goes beyond the cryptic test he sets but the history of Kamdaria itself that will be the most shocking to Talise; questioning if anyone should posses the immensely powerful amulet. Stark choices faces both of them as the war between Kamdaria and Kessoku gets closer still. Epic, intense and brilliantly written- highly recommended.
After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story. What an amazing continuation to the series! I must commend the author for her great work in creating a series comprising of short books, each of which keep you actively engaged and intrigues. Ms Moody proves to us with this that it is not the quantity of the pages that is important, but the quality. And she has continuously proved this with all the books in this series, book 6 definitely being no exception. Here, the stakes are higher than ever before and there is a lot more for Talise to lose. A gripping and magical read, Smoke Gate is clearly a riveting read that will keep you hooked until the very last page, and make you desperate for more once it is finished. I simply cannot wait until the next book is released.
This story is truly amazing. I'm at a lost for words. If you haven't started it yet, start from the bonus short story "Ice and Fire" if you can get your hands on it. This is my review for the fisrt boxset: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
In this book our heroine comes to some pretty hard decisions. I would hate to be on her shoes, but the story is really worth told and I'm loving following along her struggles to do good by her kingdom and all its citizens. The other characters are not forgotten and our improvised spy makes a few breath stealing appearances (even with a chapter of it's own - I love those too!). Things are getting really complicated but none the less, I thing her true friends are finally showing. I can't wait for the next book to come out. This is the next epic story of our generation! Go grab it!
✏️ i was given a review of this book in an exchange for an honest review but all thoughts and opinions are mine !
✏ So the journey continues and our dear princess has to make wise choices. And it has become apparent that she has too much too battle even her own self. She must conquer her fears. This series is so good not only the story but also the way it is written. The writer has put work to it and you easily can tell. Note though (more to the writer) because they are small books maybe it would be better to connect the river gate and this one or even the other books that will come together to be mote complete , as it has already been done with the elements of the crown. Despite that it is a great boom series i highly recommend 😍
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This series is fast becoming a favourite of mine. I couldn’t put this book down, I read it in a couple hours, and was so sad when I realised I’d finished it already. I’m unsure what to think of Aaden right now. I don’t know if he can be trusted or not, but I want to hope that he can be! While he only made a short appearance in this book, I am hoping we see more of him, and hope that his betrayals will be redeemable. Talise is a real warrior, and she knows how to hold her own. She’s growing more and more powerful and resourceful as the series goes, and I love her character development.
Bring on the next book. I’m dying to know what happens!
This one kinda confused me a bit. Talise is still amazing but she regressed quite a bit. Then developed well and stronger than before. I just don't see where exactly Talise is going to go from here. There is so much to be done. Betrayal at every turn, though she did start truly trusting Wendy and Claye. That's a huge bit of progress. Aaden's POV really helped this story, but there wasn't much going on with him. Obviously the Kessoku wouldn't trust him. Don't know why he thought they would. It was very naive of him. Wondering what he will do next. Talise has so much work ahead of her, but the bonds she's building with her soldiers and the people will only help her. The test for the amulet was perfect. And I really wish Eben had been a more prominent character.
The next instalment of Elements of Kandaria - action-packed
This novella brings Aaden back into the story and continues the confrontation between the Kessuko and Talise. It also involves the search for the amulet. The plot moves along well and the story remains interesting. I'd like to think that this series will reach a conclusion soon but the author seems to prefer to issue these novellas to build up the story slowly. As a fantasy fan but no longer classified as a YA, I'd prefer a longer novel. However it is certainly engaging. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Smoke Gate is the sixth book in series The Elements of Kamdaria. In this book, Talise meets the guardian of the amulet of Kamdar. He teaches her things about the history of Kamdaria and gives her a few lessons about herself. She has to make some important and difficult decisions. Just like the previous books, I absolutely loved it again! The author keeps surprising me with the story. There are so many twists and turns. The story is very unpredictable, which I really like. There's also a good amount of action and some fun and sweet moments. I can't wait to see how the story continues in the next book.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Smoke Gate, the sixth book in the Elements if Kamdaria Series by Kay L Moody, is as great as the other ones. The series seems to get better and especially more suspenseful with every book! So continue reading! We continue to accompany Talise and her group during their trip through the Gate. Most of the book plays at Smoke Gate this time, the place where Talise has the chance to get the Amulet of Kamdar and learn more about the history of Kamdaria. But Kessoku is hard on her heels and with them Aaden. On which side is he really?
This is the 6th book in the Elements of Kamdaria series and it’s just as good as the first 5! Talise meets the keeper of the amulet who teaches her about the history of Kamdaria. Talise has grown a lot already, but she still has more to do. As for Aaden, I’m not sure what I think of him. He seems to still care for Talise but his actions leave a lot to be desired. This book is well written and the plot is superb! I can’t wait to continue the series and find out what happens!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Kay L Moody continues to soar with Smoke Gate (The Elements of Kamdaria #6). In this book, Talise sets out to train with the guardian of the amulet that she met at the end of book five. The journey is full of peril and conspiracy. Talise is not sure who she can trust. She does a lot of soul-searching and evaluation.
Aaden is still with the Kessoku. No one is certain of his loyalty. Kay L Moody does a fantastic job with this story. It is full of action and suspense. The characters are complicated and well developed. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy fantasies. I also recommend reading the books in order. I would love to see this series turned into a movie or television series. It would be visually appealing and exciting. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Talise is back and dealing with the usual things her life has become. This mixed the usual mystery of what will happen with some history , and action to give an amazing book where Talise must face some decisions again. The characters were amazing and I loved seeing more of the her friends this time around. And do not forget the threat of the Kessoku always in the background no matter what. The story was fun and addicting as usual for this series.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Talise is truly becoming a princess worth fighting for. Not only amongst her soldiers, but the people as well.
There was a lot of action throughout. Ms. Moody did a good job really developed Talise's character. I felt the inner struggle, the turmoil that she battled as she working on becoming the princess that her country needed.
I enjoyed this story very much so. It had a well-thought out premise with plenty of extremely interesting characters. The main character was increasingly fascinating and I never found myself wanting to quit reading the story. I finished it all rather quickly and would definitely recommend this book to others wanting to try this author out.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lots more action in this book, with some interesting back story on Kamdar and Talise finally makes some grounding choices and learns to try trust her friends. Finally!! The lines between good and bad are so blurred in this book that I feel so bad for Talise and the responsibilities that she has sitting on her shoulders. There is no big cliffhanger in this book, but there's definitely an immediate urgency to start the next book anyway! I hope to see more Aaden too!
Amazing as always. Kay’s strong characters and plot make one amazing book and series. Tough decisions have to be made by Talise and will she be able to make the best ones for Kamdaria? I really enjoyed this book and series and I can’t wait for the next book. I received a arc from the author for a honest review and I highly recommend this book.
It’s getting soooo crazy in Kamdaria. There are so many moving pieces and it’s hard to tell friend from foe. I just love Talise and how true to herself she is written. I can’t believe you what happened I was so sad for her. On to the next cause I need to know what’s going to happen.
Once again Kay L Moody has made me fall in love with this story. Talise continues to grow as a princess making difficult decisions. Now, she is learning to trust her Frineds.
This is such a fun series to read. Looking forward to the next book!

I know every time I saw the episode I read is my favorite, but it’s true that they keep getting better. Talise and Wendy were great here, I seriously hate a certain person and I enjoyed the guardians character. Can hardly wait for the next installment!
This is a fantastic series that I definitely recommend. Its has twisted and turns that I don't see coming. It also grabbed me right from the beginning to the end of this read. It's definitely a page Turner that has you definitely looking forward to the next book. Shauna Joesten
