A deadly viral pandemic sweeps the globe, sowing chaos and destruction in its wake. Residents of a rural neighborhood struggle to survive as they are forced to fend for themselves in the midst of the outbreak.
Mike Dunham is a loner who prides himself on self-reliance and believes he is prepared for any disaster. A twist of fate will force him to take a course of action he has never before considered.
Jen Pruitt is a fourth year med student with a secret. Stuck at her parents' house during the outbreak, her medical knowledge could mean the difference between life and death for those around her, but only if she can conquer her inner demons first.
Good news! Launched the first novel in a new series - Outbreak - Surviving the Pandemic. You can read it on Amazon Kindle here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088HKJYVW
Most prepper books feature a prepper who has all his/her stuff together; years' worth of food, weapons, a safe haven, etc. And Mike is that stereotypical prepper. Where this book is different is that all his best-laid plans fail and he is forced to survive with all his neighbors.
Jen is not a prepper but is a 4th-year medical student who can't stand the sight of blood and has OCD related to handwashing because of her fear of germs. The only relationship she has with Mike is that they are neighbors in a small clutch of rural homes. The people in the neighborhood decide to ban together to try and ride out the pandemic.
This book is more about human interactions than surviving on stone soup. The neighbors need to face the dangers of the pandemic, both from external influences (like the army) and from within. You have your typical asshole who serves to disrupt the small community stretching tensions to the breaking point.
The book does have a satisfactory ending and did not end on a cliffhanger. There certainly is room for another book (big hint that is #1) but so far no sign of that book. If/when it comes out I will read it.
I enjoyed this book. The main thing I look for is a beginning and end and this book delivered. It fit in with today’s environment. I liked the characters and how you found out where they ended up. There were typos but they mostly seemed to be left out words and didn’t affect your ability to follow the story.
Solid first book in this new series by John Winchester. Loner Mike is ready to bug out when a pandemic hits the states, but no plan goes untested and Mike quickly learns that he needs help from others. Can’t wait for the next book, now that we have been introduced to the main characters, I can’t wait to see how they grow and change.
I really enjoyed this book. I couldn’t put it down. There was plenty of action as well as twists and turns in the plot. Great read. I’m looking forward to reading the next instalment.
What a timely book. It touches very very close to home! Grab this book and read it. I read it til dawn, one-sitting. Congrats Mr. John Winchester. Thank you
This is an easy to read and follow a group of diverse strangers in a plausible story line. I would love to see a second book following their progress during a coming year. How does Aaron fare. Do Jen's parents get back. I just happened to follow Amazon's recommendation and loved this book. I was sorry it ended. Since this book, I have read all of the John Winchester stories happily. My only suggestion would be to follow up this story with one more!
