Scott was embroiled in a new war, one against an empire that had near parity with weapons and shields. The first battle had been a draw, he’d managed to get the enemy to retreat, and now it was an arm’s race of sorts.
If that wasn’t bad enough, he had to deal with the political fallout of being manipulated by the eight, and blaze his own trail, which would be both easier and harder. There was also some fallout with the allied trade races in the fifty galaxies, they weren’t happy with the status quo and being put under the debt of his protection.
He’ll need to work hard to survive, and he can’t do it alone.
Author’s note: This is primarily a space opera. The fantasy elements of the book are tangential at best, and I don’t believe that will change through the rest of the series. Oh, there’s mages, shifters, witches, and vampires in these pages, but that’s really not the focus.
I've been an avid book reader since I was a teenager in the 1980's. My preferred genre's are science fiction and fantasy.
I wrote some short stories and was encouraged to try writing and self publishing by some friends. I work in computers and writing is an obsessive hobby I have been trying to hone for a couple of years now. I'll let you judge if I have succeeded or not.
I was disappointed in the last book, but this one was more interesting. I still find the numbers of ships involved and the short time it takes to develop and implement new technology a bit ridiculous, but it is still an enjoyable, if short read.
This book is a fitting continuation in the series. The war progresses as new technologies are discovered. This is why we read the series. Harmony is hard to achieve and resisting impulses when your tech is superior are ideas pondered in this book. The numbers of ships is frankly mind boggling and beyond the scope of a normal person as it would take a huge administration to handle the vast fleets involved but his is fantasy. The love and romance is basically non existent which I find both disturbing and refreshing from other books in the genre. Looking forward to more though have no idea what's next.
A little different than the usual. As another said, "with great power, comes great responsibility" . He is trying to use it correctly and has death waiting for him if he screws this up. I do like how he handled the eight by telling the truth. Now, if only the good guys could expose the deep state.... And could get the rest of America to care.
I have been a reader of this author for awhile and I’m a big fan. the stories are well thought out and the world building is good. the characters are always very engaging and have interesting personalities.
The story continues in this volume 5 of 6. As before I would recommend reading the prior books if at all possible. Enjoyed this one more as there was less space battles and more diplomacy. Again read it pretty much straight through without stopping.
Somehow, if I was a hero in Harrison's book, I will not be so fast to say "Life is good", as he always use that exact word as the preface to a major explosion!
