Dernier été

Rate this book

The novel takes place ten years into the future, in Marseille during the summer canicules when record temperatures stifle the city due to accelerated climate change, a new coronavirus is killing thousands every day and the world has become so politically correct that cancel culture befalls everyone with a slightly different opinion. The story follows a younger woman who spends her days at the Cercle des Nageurs in Marseille where she meets an 80-something writer who used to be celebrated for his books but was canceled out by society for numerous reasons. They promptly decide to spend the remaining days of his life (he suffers from cancer) together and spend their time discussing politics, literature, religion and economics whilst cooking and taking long walks together. Well written, mysterious at times, a satire on modern society but ultimately a great love story about “un dernier grand amour”.

I found the title of this book interesting. “Dernier été” The Last summer. But this is where the interest died. I am a sucker for books about Summer or Summer reading and I must say they more than often disappoint. “Dernier Été “such beautiful evoking words for such a despicable book. I did not find much humor in it and neither did it express love as promised by the critics. I gave it a very generous 3 stars probably should have been one.
