In 1941, Estherly Krauss, a seventeen-year-old Jewish girl, documents her struggles during the Holocaust. With Hitler’s reign coming down on Estherly and her family, her days of being a typical teen are over. While fighting for a forbidden love, the atrocities and horrors Estherly endures force her to grow up in an uncertain and dangerous time.
Estherly’s voice echoes through time when Ferrin Frazier discovers her diaries. Without realizing the effect these small books will have, a door opens for Ferrin to explore her own life and love. Consumed by Estherly’s story of survival, the secrets she kept, and the desire to know what became of her, Ferrin embarks on an adventure of discovery. Will she find the answers she’s looking for? Or will it end up leading her down a path she never predicted?

Though I received an advanced copy of this book for review, that in no way affects my thoughts displayed below.
Where do I even begin with Remember the Stars? With a book that truly makes your heart ache in a thousand different ways, but brings you to the other side with a deeper love and understanding for people in general, well, how can you even put a star rating on that? Stars, for this book, have a bit of a different meaning, too.
From the very beginning, I was swept up, just as our modern day protagonists were, in Estherly’s story. In her struggle. Her strength, it gave me strength during our own uncertain times. I’m not downplaying anyone’s personal battles and I’m never one to tell people they shouldn’t complain just because others have it worse, but in seeing the world through the eyes of this remarkable young Jewish girl it made my own problems seem so small. I’ve always both loved and hated reading about this time in history. Loved because I’m of the belief that if we don’t embrace and study history, we’re doomed to repeat it. Hate because it completely tears me up inside. The fact that we as a people allowed, and to many extents still allow, this type of treatment is horrific. Marisa Oldham and Carraine Oldham were able to display those atrocious themes while still, above all else, breathing hope and love and courage into every single page. I could not stop reading. This book will take you to the very edges of despair, your very soul will shake, but it’s a journey that is beyond worth it. One of the most beautiful stories I’ve read in a long time, and in a time where it’s feeling painfully relevant again, one I feel that everyone should read. I really don't think I can write a review that really does justice to this masterpiece. The current parts of the book are the sweetest romance, but the Holocaust story told through the diary of a young girl living it are brutally beautiful. This is nothing like Anne Frank but everything our modern society needs to read. As the time since WWII increases, people stop having first hand connections, but we cannot forget or minimize simply because we can't imagine it happening again. This is a refreshing, touching, powerful connection in such unexpected ways. This books gets my very highest recommendations without any caveats. Everyone needs to read this one. Only a few months into 2020 and it's got my vote for book of the decade, which are not words I throw around lightly.
I received this book as an ARC from the author for an honest review. I have been waiting months(honestly years) for this book. I've always been intrigued with the Holocaust and Marisa is one of my "always buy" Authors. Let me tell you this book did not disappoint.
Marisa and carraine did such and amazing job weaving estherly and ferrins' stories together. Both characters have strong voices. Estherlys story of survival through the Holocaust is one of my favorites to date now. It's so we'll written and researched it felt as if I was really there with her experiencing all the heart ache, pain, and trials during that time period. And ferrins' story was one of promise and believing in yourself to make the impossible possible. She really spoke to me as a human to always follow my dreams and life your life for you. Both women showed me that love will conquer everything and life does get better. Dark times will happen In life and in the world, but as long as you believe, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Holy cow!!! This book is incredible. With everything happening in the world, this story is such an incredible reminder of the beauty that can come from even a tragedy and that we can all do better in this world. The concept of getting insight into the Holocaust from someone’s journal helps bring this period to life. I’ll definitely be recommending this one to friends and family.
I was given an ARC from the authors for my honest review.
It took me a week to try to come up with the right words to write since this book affected me in more ways then one. REMEMBER THE STARS was a MAGNIFICENT read. If there were more stars to hit I would of gone up to the highest star for a book review.
Remember the Stars has ALL of my emotions on edge. I read this book within 6 hours. I couldn’t put it down. I cried, laughed, was angered, and heartbroken. I have been thinking about this book for over a week and it still gives my heart a major tug.
Reading this book will take you to the Holocaust and back to current day. You will read about the conditions, the pain, and the pain that the main character Estherly and her family go through. I know the book is fiction but the accounts of what happened are true. If you have read anything about the holocaust you will know that most of what you read in this book are true.
I do not like to give out any spoilers but if there is only one book you read this year please make it REMEMBER THE STARS!
Thank you Marisa & Carraine Oldham for a wonderful book that I will read over and over.
I absolutely loved this story. It has history. It has present. And when the two come together, it's wonderful and amazing. Yes, there's sadness. There's heartache. But love is more powerful.
Not many books make me cry, but this one did. It was an incredible telling of the Holocaust and one young woman's fight to survive, and another woman's quest to locate her years later. Each of the characters is well-developed, unique, and lovable. The story has so many twists, so many ways of stealing your tears. The story guts me every time I read it. I can't recommend this book enough!
If I hadn't been reading a Kindle edition, I would have stayed up all night to finish this book! The nice thing about a paper book is it doesn't run out of battery halfway through. I was really intrigued by the subject - the diaries of a Jewish girl during the Holocaust. I was a little meh about the modern day story line at first, but only because I'm not into the Romance genre. But I grew to love the characters & it wasn't trashy or campy at all. Plus, I liked the character ark as Ferrin worked her way through the diaries. The actual story of Estherly was what really drew me in. I don't want to give anything away, but it was gripping. Recommend!
A beautifully written and well researched piece of historical/modern fiction, Remember the Stars moves from present to past as Ferrin, having uncovered the diaries of a girl during the time of Nazi Occupation, works to unravel the mystery behind their author, Estherly, and what happened to her after the war.
Heart-breaking but hopeful, the resounding message that those who have been persecuted by great evil should not be forgotten resounds throughout the novel, very apt for these trying times today. The past should always be remembered and learned from, so as not to repeat it in the future. As a reader of many Holocaust memoirs and novels, I can say with certainty that the authors have done this time period justice and created an engaging novel for readers of historical/modern fiction.
If I could give this 10 stars, I would. It’s worth every single on of them. The characters are so real you feel like you’re in the book with them. You feel every part of this book from the smiles to the tears and then some. I highly recommend this book.
This book hit me in the gut. I've sat through class learning about WWII and It made my heartbreak for what these families have gone through. But this book follows a journey of a young girl in 1941 until pretty much the end of her life. The twist with this book is it has a focus on a few characters in the here and now looking for love and happiness. This journey opened their eyes and mine as well. I cannot recommend this book enough. This is a long review I wish I could rate it more, I believe it deserves more.
Ferrin Frazier glides through life. She lets the sadness consume her life. Ferrin lives for her starring at her handsome next-door neighbor Sam. Sam is getting ready to throw away some things in his attic and Ferrin notices the boxes and asks what he's throwing out. He said it was just things sitting in the attic since he moved in Ferrin asks to take it off his hands. What Ferrin finds in this box is world tilting and life-changing for everyone involved. It's a diary, not just any diary a diary from 1941.
Estherly, 16 lives with her family in 1941 there are Nazi soldiers all around It's her they follow her to school they follow them home, they harass and torture you. Estherly had a rough life but she had her best friend Mae, her sisters and brother, and her secret boyfriend Henry. Estherly suffers from the heartbreaking loss at such as young age and throughout her life. Her family struggles to stay alive and well during these times.
Ferrin and Sam go on a journey reading each of Estherly's diaries and tries to track down Estherly, as she's made such a huge impact on their life. What will they find when everything is said and done?
This book was a recommendation and I wasn't sure what to expect. Reading the synopsis, I was hesitant to start reading. With Covid19 and social distancing, delving into a new book about the Holocaust didn't seem like a good way to escape and lift my spirits. But, I did and am I ever glad I did. I would've missed this beautiful treasure of a story. Chapter 1 begins slowly and I found myself wondering if it was worth the read. It is the only reason I give it 4 stars. My advice, hold on until Chapter 2. This is where the rollercoaster ride begins with love, adventure, excitement, sadness, relief and anger. It reminds us of the horror of the holocaust and how those struggled to survive. I found myself falling in love with Estherly, and understood why other characters in her life did as well. I could feel her pain and found myself taking deep breaths for her on every page turn. I was wrong, it was a great book to read during this pandemic, as it reminded me that everyday is a gift and we are fortunate to be surrounded by people who love us. I would not let the word "Holocaust" deter you from picking up this book, as it is truly a real gem in disguise.
This is a Holocaust story written through the diary of a young teenage young woman, Estherly Krauss. She has suffered more than anyone ever should. But, she has also had many blessings.
We have Ferrin Frazier who lives next door to Sam. She’s always longed for Sam, but is afraid he doesn’t notice her.
Sam has been cleaning up the attic in his house and Ferrin notices in the trash all the boxes. After rifling through a bit of the discarded items, Ferrin realizes these are all from WWII if not older. She knows someone must be missing these items and asks Sam if she can keep them.
Ferrin starts reading the journal - which is hand written in German since she took high school and college level German she can read the entries. Sam and Ferrin begin to connect over the journals and items in the boxes. They begin a nice friendship with each other.
The journals belong to a 17 year old girl, Estherly Krauss, who survived being a Jew in 1940’s in Germany. The entrees are about what happened to her and her family before being captive and while in a camp.
Ferrin and Sam embark on a road of discovery through the journals and pictures. Will Sam and Ferrin be able to connect and build a relationship together? Will Ferrin be able to break out of her shell and stand up for herself? Will Ferrin be able to get her questions answered?
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book from the author. I am freely leaving an honest review.
‘Remember the Stars’ – What can I say? I am not much of a reader, but I could not put it down. I just had to find out how the main characters did both in the present and the past. How they survived the Holocaust, how their lives were affected by it and who did not survive. It is a must-read book. Marisa and Carraine’s story is filled with emotions and details of the horror that people went thru during the Holocaust. They must have done an enormous about of research. The story takes you to through all the horror of that time but has a up lifted message of survival and overcoming evil. I can not recommend this book strongly enough.
I know Remember the Stars is a work of fiction (with historical facts) , but it was an emotional journey. It read so true to life. I felt as if I could have been reading someone’s actual diary. My heart broke as I read Estherly’s story. It was one of heartbreak, courage, and happiness. This book makes you take a step back and reevaluate your life. Is it fulfilling, all you want it to be? If not grab life by the horns and take a leap!!! I highly recommend this beautifully written story.
This is my first historical fiction read. I was pleased with this book but not up to the point where I would recommend it to anyone. It's just okay. Nothing special among the characters.
