A Deadly Obsession

Rate this book
He's no prince charming. This isn't a fairy tale.

ELLA
I’ve been groomed my whole life to become his wife.

A man I have never met.

I won’t be alone, there are seven of us and he will only choose one.

When I arrive at his mansion, I’m excited until I realize my prince charming is a brute.

A man without feelings.

A man who has no interest in the parties that are thrown, so he can get to know us.

He’s angry and brutal.

He has us all terrified.

Until that one night. The night I stand up to him and become his obsession.

It’s a deadly obsession, that I fear I won’t survive.

LUCAS
I want to be left alone, but my time has come to pick a wife.

A wife from seven potential women.

I have an empire to rule.

I will not allow anything to get in the way of that.

Most certainly not any of these women.

That is, until that one night.

She stands out of formation and stops me from killing an enemy.

No one has ever stood up to me before.

Now she has my attention, whether she wants it or not.

This book reminded me of a darker and adult version of The Selection series.

The h along with 6 other girls arrive at the H’s mansion to be selected to be his bride. But its all a ruse, the H’s father has already selected the richest girl out of the lot and so the H has no say.

The H initially disliked the h and the h, who was starry eyed, began to realise how cruel the H was and so she disliked him at the beginning.

However, they were sexually attracted and soon met in secret and also had sex which was against the rules.

The h is pretty stupid to be honest, she blurts out things that are not supposed to be said and gets herself and the H in big trouble.

She doesn’t understand a lot of things which makes her look more stupid than naive.

The H is intelligent and knows exactly what he is dealing with in their world especially in regards to his evil father (Andrew).
I really liked the H (Lucas). His personality and his behaviour made sense. He obviously loved the h (Ella) to death. But Ella was so stupid that at some point I really thought she wanted to get herself killed, I started getting a headache from rolling my eyes every time she got in trouble.

We don’t really get a lot of info and I am not sure what kind of committee or cult they are in. Seems like a futuristic government organisation. How the girls were selected and how come the h was raised from birth to be the H’s bride and how come she didn’t go to school while some of the other girls like Hannah (h’s friend) went to school—- are all questions that were not answered.

We don’t get a lot of info regarding this world. We don’t get many answers either even in the second book.

It was an interesting read but I wish it had more depth and more information regarding their whole process and committee and what not.

Trigger for me: One thing I really didn’t understand was how did Henry, the H’s older brother become an evil person ? He was also described to be mentally unstable but also had great love for his lovers, it was a bit weird. At the end, I felt sorry for Henry because maybe he was just always misunderstood. It didn’t sit well with me that Henry was to be punished for being gay. Henry was a very strange character, he was described to be a very mean guy, who got off by hurting people. So he had all the “ill qualities” — he hunched, he had a cruel face, he was “addle brained”, he understood yet he was “mentally unstable”, and then he was gay (this is not an ill quality but the book made it sound that way). The author made it sound like a bad thing and that made me feel really uncomfortable. Anyways, its fiction and he is one of the evil characters, however maybe he should have just been described as a guy and then evil. It left a bad taste with how prejudiced all his characteristics were. Mental health and things dealing with minority and race are triggers for me, but if we remove such triggers, I would have rated it higher.
Throughout the book, so many of the characters were surprised or shocked to realise that Henry was gay, it made it really hard for me to read and remember it as fiction, already the LGBTQ comminity is facing so much discrimination and hate that we don’t need that in fictional novels.

Safety: H is h’s only lover, no cheating.

3 solid ⭐️ for the suspense and the H, he was marvelous. This means it was an okay read but not something I would go back to again and again.

DNF @ 50%I have tried for days to get through this book but I just can't do it. I am finding that I have a hard time with the fully grown, adult Alpha MC when he is controlled by his father. I just hate that trope. I can't get past it. There are other things going on that don't make it better. I do like the writing style though. I just can't get past how weak Lucas seems.

I'm moving on.

This story of arranged marriage entangled me with mystery and plot twists. I needed to know where or when this story takes place with all these barbaric rules for disobedience? I felt so many emotions reading through this book, mostly suspense to the end. The second book of this duet will get added to my TBR.

Okay so the book started out really nice and I was getting into the gist of it only to get irritated in the middle and it went downhill from there. The heroin/lead female character was annoying for no reason. Stayed putting everyone in danger and acting clueless. Honestly, she really annoyed me. If you can get past the frustration of having to read how annoying and silly she is then you'll love the book. Hopefully she's less annoying in book 2 🙃

I read way too many romance books and therefore tend to get bored easily as many romances seem the same. However this book started in a different way and had an typical premise and so that helped keep my interest. I liked the heroine. The hero was a jerk but I didn't dislike him.

There are hot sexy times. Heroine was a virgin. I liked that the hero was not a manhoe and that there is no sex with OP after meeting each other and none in this book. The story includes family some drama and politics. The story had a cliffhanger ending. I prefer that a couple's story gets concluded in one book, HEA ending but I could handle it.

This is the best book!! It’s kind of creepy at times and sad but I could not put it down! Lucas is so entrenched in what his father makes him do and Ella is just trying to be with the man she loves, but doesn’t like at times. This is definitely a must read! Can’t wait for Book 2 of this series!
Definitely recommend!

This is a very twisted story with very twisted and cruel men. Even most women is not really sympathique either. And there is Ella; beautiful, young, fierce but also quite naive and not aware of all the rules (which seems kind of strange since she was groomed her whole life for this). She is constantly falling out of line. But she captured her beast’s, Lucas’, attention fully. But even his life is not his to decide. Unluckily there are even worst beasts in proximity. Beasts and dark secrets. They might just get her killed and maybe not only her.

Lucas must pick a wife and he has seven women to choose from and doesn’t want any of them. When Ella stands out by standing up to him, sparks begin to fly. Fast-paced read with loads of drama, steam and suspense. Looking forward to more in the series. I loved it!

In the beginning, it seemed to start off a little rocky, starting with the two different beginnings of Ella and Lucas. It was hard to tell which time period or where this was taking place (based on the descriptions of what they wore, how they interacted etc.) This made it hard for me to engross myself in the book right away because i was trying to piece together their age, where this took place, what time period and much more, it felt a little lacking and dry but I carried on and don't regret a second of it!
The story quickly warmed up when Ella first met Lucas, greeted with nothing but an icy heart and exterior despite being raised to possible become his future wife along with the other girls competing for his attraction and hand in marriage. The fire Ella has is too much and too new to Lucas, not knowing how to accept someone challenging his authority for once

'“I want to put out that fire that burns too brightly inside her. She is young and naïve and doesn’t seem to know her place.
“If you keep looking at me like that, Ella, I’ll take it as an invitation.” I glance at her in the mirror.”

The curious and rebellious personality of Ella has caught the eye of dark, brooding and Intense Lucas whose father has now begun enforcing his duty of finding a wife and becoming the leader. Lucas' temper demands obedience but Ella is something he can't shake despite the other girls who fawn and fall to his feet instantly within the 'competition' in his hand.

The book will have you turning the pages and losing track of time, wanting to follow the story between these two opposites. The heartache, struggles, and lust these characters will have for each other keeps you rooting for them.
Prepare yourself for wanting more from this author, it ends on a cliff-hanger. Cant wait to see what is in store in the next book!

From almost the beginning, there was a slight buzz flowing through my body! This was a dark and definitely twisted read. Things are not at all as they appear, and the devil you know is better than the one you don’t!
Cruelty, brutality, secrets, lies, mystery, suspense, and a forbidden desire! What more could a reader ask for?!?
I noticed that my heart was pounding a bit harder and faster while reading this.
I liked Ella, but her mother definitely did her a disservice by keeping her so sheltered and not properly preparing her. I wasn’t sure of what to make of Lucas at first, but he grew on me the more I read. Henry just left me feeling on edge the whole time. And let’s not forget Master Andrew, just pure evil!
This book ends in a major cliffhanger! I’m desperate to find out what happens!!!!

What a gripping read from the incredible mind of Vi Cater! This story has an element of beauty and the beast mixed with dark, psychological, suspense, romance and lust. Part of a series so there is a heart stopping cliff hanger! There is so much i want to say about this book but don't like giving out spoilers, but this book transports you into this dark world of rules, traditions and punishments unlike no other. You feel every emotion, every word the characters portray and your left needing more! Well written and paced through out, this is a real page turner that you cant put down. Cant wait for part 2!

Oh my goodness. This dark and gripping of a story. It has us addicted to it to see what is going to happen next. Ella is so strong at times and so weak at other times. She tends to get herself into a mix. Lucas is dark and strong. He is one that has you second guessing yourself. It is extremely well written and the flow of the story is superb. The descriptions are vivid and easy able to be pictured. This story has you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. Yes, it does end in a cliffhanger and lord knows it is an excellent story. It is a must read and doesn’t disappoint!!!!!!

In a wold with powerful families girls are groomed to be presented as as brides for the next head of the society, Master Lucas. Ella finds herself as one of the girls and is befriend by sweet Hannah and Jessie, two other girls presented as a possible bride. This is not a fairy as Ella always dreamed of, but it has become a nightmare. There is danger at every turn, but one thing is true is the way Lucas and Ella feel about each other. To be continued...

I'm not one to tell the story so will just mention that I haven't experienced such gut wrenching roller coaster feelings from the lowest low to a sense of love, caring & tenderness but is it enough for this couple? The odds are stacked against it but I live in hope for part 2 of this compelling page turner. I received an arc & this is my honest & voluntary review.

Meh

I liked the book. It kept me intrigued. But it felt incomplete. I understand it is a cliffhanger, but some things could/should have been explained in more depth. I felt confused a lot of times. I don’t understand what the dynamic is of the community/elites. It is bizarre. And yet it kept me intrigued and reading.

Hmmm

This is supposed to be a dark romance but I don't really feel like it is actually.
I'm not sure how I feel about Lucas either
I do like Ella
There are a lot of secrets to keep you reading though and I basically want to know how this ends

Choppy storyline. Unrealistic actions. STUPID CHARACTERS.

This whole book is based on Ella (the female MC) competing with other girls to be chosen as the future wife of Lucas (the male MC), whom is the son of a mafia boss? I don’t even know if it was the mafia, or some rich idiots playing at criminals. I don’t even care anymore 😊

All her life, Ella had been groomed for this competition. It was literally pitiful and sickening how, at the beginning of the book, she only cared about being chosen as basically a trophy wife:

The horrible thought of not becoming Lucas’s wife has everything in me freezing. I wouldn’t know what to do. He has been everything my entire life. I push the thought away like it is a dirty thing.

She’s never met him before. It was really, really ridiculous reading her thoughts. Ella’s type is not really a heroine that I could grow to like and respect.

And, even after they finally meet, and Lucas doesn’t end up meeting her expectations:

“I had thought one look at me and it would be love at first sight.”

*FACEPALM* This is the real world sweetheart, you’re not 5 years old 🙂

So it’s safe to say Lucas acts like an old bear with a stick up his arse thorn in his paw throughout the story. For being a ‘dark romance’, he was a pretty tame hero in my opinion. Topping that, he was also pretty boring.
For whatever reason, he becomes ‘obsessed’ with Ella. I had no idea why. She was painfully dumb, with a stale personality, acting stupidly, and ‘excusing herself’ from rooms to go cry prettily in her bedroom whenever a situation wasn’t to her liking every other chapter.

The choppy storyline also victimises other characters. As an example, this other girl in the competition (for mysterious reasons) automatically likes Ella on sight. They speak for barely 10 minutes together. And this is what she says:
“I’m here if you need to talk.” She smiles softly. “We are sisters now.” She sounds so sincere.

SISTERS??!! I was laughing my arse off.

Like I’ve said already, this is ridiculous.

Another girl called Vicky, on the other hand, is a carbon-copy-jealous-other-woman that hates Ella on sight instead. In a scene, Vicky physically hurts Ella, and as a result she ‘disappears’. The other girls are told Vicky had been returned home as being violent is against the rules. Some of the other girls are worried Vicky got ‘punished’ or even killed. For whatever reason, Ella decides she just HAS to know what happened to Vicky!
“It didn’t matter, what mattered right now is finding out what happened to Vicky, and I will find out even if that meant playing nice with Master Lucas.”

I really couldn’t understand her reasoning. I wasn’t sure if that was yet another stupid action of Ella, or the writer trying to string along the storyline

But I digress. After... what? Three days? Both Lucas and Ella are pretty chummy with each other and having deeeeep feelings:
“She swallows as she stares up at me. Her wide green eyes are still brimming with pain. Pain I have caused. My father had humiliated her and I had sat stiff and shut off all my emotions. I couldn’t interject, if he knew how I felt about her, what would he do? I couldn’t have Ella hurt. So I needed to make the pain a bit less for her.
I close the distance and place a kiss on her forehead. I linger longer than I should. It’s on my lips to apologize again, but I don’t.

*YAWN*

Goodbye.

Genre: Dark Romance
Book Length: Novel
POV: Alternating Dual
Setting: A fictitious community of Elites who rule over their people (like a Kingdom of sorts)
Hero: Lucas is the son of a very powerful Elite ruler. His age isn’t revealed but I would guess he’s in his twenties. He has black hair and black eyes.
Heroine: Ella is a young girl that has been groomed to become Lucas’s wife via a competition. She’s 19, has black hair and emerald green eyes.
Heat Level: Low
Frequency of Sex: Low
Angst Level: Medium
Standalone or Series: Series
Cliffhanger: Yes
Would I Recommend? Yes
My Review: I really enjoyed this first book in the Obsessed Duet. It’s a relatively slow burn romance with dark overtures. Lucas starts off so arrogant and entitled. He’s mean, dismissive and violent and you don’t like him at first. When he meets Ella and realizes she’s more than a vapid girl vying to be his wife, his demeanor matures to a more protective, possessive and caring man. Ella is sweet and kind and was raised her whole life thinking she would become Lucas’s wife, so finding out he’s a complete jerk is quite a shock to her. There is a lot of drama and danger in this book with bad intentioned people around every corner, including Lucas’s father who is a deadly and cruel terror to everyone. There wasn’t a lot of detail about this community they all live in, it’s very unusual. It’s set in modern times but the way these Elites exert control is very barbaric and almost medieval. I liked the progression of Lucas and Ella’s romance, they are facing challenges that will be difficult to get through which makes it a very interesting read. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

I couldn’t stop reading, I had tears through most of it. Ella has lost her dad, groomed to marry Lucas one day but when the selection process starts she realised this isn’t the fairy tale she has imagined her whole life, this is a horror story. I don’t know what’s going to happen to her but the cliffhanger this book left off on I don’t think it’s going to be glitter sparkles and unicorn poop

So many questions left unanswered. I really want to know more about this place they live in and the history of the rules and whatnot. Why was she one of the chosen one and how is it determined. Where are they that they can’t leave? Why does his dad keep bringing people to Lucas?

So many questions

🖤LUCAS-

🖤ELLA

✅A LIL OVERVIEW--

Ella, an 18 year old girl participates in a sorta-ball where Lucas will pick his new wife. Ella's dad committed su*c*de few years ago due to debt and her mother wants her to be the dutiful wife to the son of Mafia, Lucas. For her better future yk?

Many women participate in the ball and by the end of the Book 1, Lucas falls in love with Ella but Lucas's dad(the villain of our story) wants him to marry OW.

Mainly both books focus on the tension b/w Lucas and his Dad. (what a mfing asshole his dad was)

✅RAAAAANT-

Okay so I would say that this book is for those people who can't handle Celia Aaron level of Mafia Romance.

This is the candy stuff, the less gory stuff you know? So if you can't handle heavy stuff but still wanna enjoy mafia romance, then this is the place for you.

The first book was kinda slow, there were lot of mystries. And the story picked up speed in the second book.

In first book, I think it would have been better had the author not added such a lengthy OW drama. It should have been one and done in 4-5 chapters, but it went on for like......80% of the first book.

Now for people who often read Duet's or Triologies, they might disagree, i dont read that many duets cause Im always like 😣LETS JUST GET THIS OVER WITH!!---im very impatient with romance novels.

Another VERY important thing that Id like to adress is the Character Arc of Ella. The top reviewer of this book says that she was stupid and immature and a people-pleaser-idiot.

I respectfully disagree.

If you've read the whole book you'll realise that Ella is raised to be Lucas's wife since she was born. She was never sent to school, was taught to be obedient, be a good cook ,nod and smile at everything and never raise her voice or question Lucas.

With that level of Brainwashing Im not suprised that she has a hard time taking wise decisions for herself because she has always been under her mother's command.

But still I will say that there were many good people in this book who helped Lucas, Id say Ella was the most compassionate and soft and sweetest woman that Lucas could ask for.

The reviewers overlooked the risks she took for people she loved. The whole time Lucas's dad wanted to kill her but she disobeyed every rule in their family to be with Lucas.

I say it's harder to be a kind person in a cruel world rather than being cruel just like everyone else. (does that make sense?) I will defend Ella to the end of Earth.

Lucas was a VERY TOUGH guy, cruel, obsessive and unforgiving. By the end of Book 2 he is

😫WHAT WAS ABSOLUTELY STUPID, about this duet was the wierd 'Rule-Book' that this family had.

Like, there was this book which had a list of rules and punishments for people who were part of mafia and disobeyed the leader in some way.

The rule book applied to the leader as well. (Lucas's dad) but the bonkers thing was, he had broken SEVERAL rules and had never been punished for any of them.

Mafia DO NOT follow any kind of books. Thats why its the skin mafia!!!!

Everytime Lucas or his brother(more on this dude later) or even Ella did something wrong. Dear daddy used to say 'The book lists these rules and you'll be punished in the following way'.

It was so stupid and embarrasing to read it like....holy shit. VERY poorly done.

✅Another person Id like to talk about is the brother, Henry. Lucas's older brother was..... not okay. He was I gues.......Autistic? Or a psychopath?

He showed signs of varied emotions. He was too sweet sometimes, sometimes he was almost evil to the point he almost killed Ella.

I actually rooted for him to get better, but sadly their dad the asshole didnt get him any help. In the end he does become a psychopath. And evil.

I feel like I have revealed the whole story, But i havent there are SO MANY mysteries in this duet.

Best thing was the character Arc of both the MCs, the way they were with each other was like......so NOT mafia-like. Whenever they were around each other it almost felt like a bubble of love had formed around them, isolating them from the entire world.

🟥SPOILERS-

▶Dual virgins.
▶No-cheating.
OW drama- The OW, Sabrina who is chosen by the dad for Lucas tries to kiss Lucas but he evades.
OM drama- A guard at Hs house tries to assualt Ella before Lucas kills him.
▶HEA.
Smut-8/10.
▶Chemistry- J/P hero. Honestly suprised by how emotional it got in Book2. Kudos to Vi Carter.
Epilogue-Married with kids.
