Adolescent wounds vs very grown-up attraction. Toss in a small boy and mix well
My name is Margaret Fisher. I agreed to be the guardian of my best friend’s little boy should anything happen to her and her husband. Charlie is my godson and I love him to pieces.
When I was called into the attorney’s office after their tragic deaths, I thought I knew what to expect. Then Cole Lassiter walked in like he owned the place. My first thought was how amazing he looked after all these years. My second was shock. What was he doing here? I hadn’t seen him since high school when he’d broken my heart.
What is the attorney saying? We’re to be co-guardians of Charlie?

I may do a more detailed review, but I don't think so. I just want to forget this book completely and erase it from my mind.
So, I found out about this book today. The blurb was interesting and I made sure to check the reviews for anything I might not like. I guess, I didn't do a good job.
I couldn't delete this book from my phone fast enough. I skimmed the book because I wanted to learn about what the secret was that caused Meg and Cole's break up back in high school.
It was so stupid. Cole thought she told some people his secret, that he was dyslexic. The truth was, she asked her father how to help someone with dyslexia, not mentioning her boyfriend, Cole's name. A classmate who has a crush on her, Ed, overhears and correctly guess it is Cole who is dyslexic. Ed lies to Cole that Meg told him and they laugh about how stupid he is. Cole gets angry and without giving any explanation, he breaks up with her. This whole time, he stays angry with her.
Janae is Meg's best friend. She and her husband Ty dies in an accident and leaves guardianship over their son, Charlie, to both Meg and Cole. Here is the twist, Cole believes Charlie is his son. Apparently, before Janae married Ty, they had an argument because Ty wasn't sure if he wanted to get married. Janae runs off to Texas where she meets up with Cole, unplanned. They have sex a couple of times when they realized they shouldn't have sex when they love somebody else. Ty chases after her to Texas and they elope to Las Vegas.
Here is why I regret reading this book: 1. Cole and Janae are shit and trash people. Janae slept with the guy that her best friend was in love with. Their supposed love for their significant others didn't stop them from having sex with each other and have any remorse. 2. Janae never tells her husband that she slept with Cole even after marriage and suspecting that Charlie is Cole's. Charlie is righthanded, dyslexic and has hair like Cole. 3. Cole's original plan was to take a secret DNA test and petition for sole custody of Charlie without telling Meg. He was never going to tell Meg about sleeping with Janae because she wouldn't understand. He said "women are silly like that with their friends". Even after they had a heart to heart about what broke them up in high school and never lying and keeping secrets again, Cole decides to never tell her about sleeping with Janae. 4. When Meg finds out, her pain was so devastating. She can't get over the image of her best friend and Cole having sex. I wouldn't either. Then him trying to take Charlie away from her, whom she already considers a son. Time and time again, she gives Cole chances to explain which he never did to her. She apologizes more than he ever did, which was weird. Meg actually blames herself for everything. He never even groveled. Ugh, I wouldn't take him back.

Good book. I really liked the way that both Meg and Cole stepped up to take care of Charlie, even with the way they felt about each other. Neither of them wanted to be around the other, but they put it aside for Charlie. As they spent time together, it became obvious that they were still attracted. They also learned to communicate with each other because of what they had to do for Charlie. As they did so, more of their past issues came to light and were resolved. There were a couple of surprises at the end that helped put everything to rest and made their HEA possible.
Second Chance Family is the fifth in the Jackson Hole series but can be read as a stand alone. This is a story of a second chance at a first love in which miscommunications are explained, misconceptions are corrected and hearts are healed. Cole and Meg fell in love in high school but outside influences and family tragedies caused the two to go their separate ways. Now years later, they are both named co-guardian of their best friend's little boy after the parents are killed in an accident. Meg and Cole must learn to put their attitudes and past behind them in order to help Charlie and grow as a family. This is a wonderfully written story filled with laughs, tears, a little bit of anger and a lot of heart. The characters and story are realistic, engaging and entertaining with a natural flow to the conclusion.
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.
This is a heartwarming second chance romance with engaging characters and a satisfying plot. The little boy is delightful and added to my enjoyment of the story. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. Happy ☺reading 📚!
I do not like Cole. Not a big fan of Margaret either,
Charlie parents died, and these two have been tasked with raising him. It's been just a few weeks since his parents died and both of these adults are already calling him their son and figuring out how to get sole custody and cut the other out completely.
In this fifth novel in the Jackson Hole sequence, the focus is on Margaret (Meg) Fisher and Cole Lassiter, who were high school sweethearts who broke up. Meg, who currently lives in Nebraska and works as a physical therapist, returns to Jackson Hole to take over guardianship of Charlie, the six-year-old son of her friends Janae and Ty, both killed in an auto accident. But Janae and Ty also named Cole as a guardian, and neither Meg nor Cole knew about the other. Both are shocked by the shared custody, which also requires living in Jackson Hole (Cole lives in Texas) until the school year is over. While Cole is wealthy and can easily afford to relocate, Meg cannot afford to move to Jackson Hole. The temporary solution is for Cole to buy a large house and Meg and Charlie move in.
Complications abound. Meg and Cole blame the other person for their high school breakup. Cole just had knee surgery and needs Meg’s help with his rehabilitation. And most ominously, Cole had an affair with Janae while she and Ty had broken up, and Cole suspects he is Charlie’s genetic father. If he can get proof, Cole plans to file for sole custody, leaving Meg out of the picture. Can Meg and Cole work through their issues?
As in the previous novels, Mary Karen and Travis (Meg’s older brother) are presented here again as a married couple, although they were not married in books 1 and 2, and their wedding is skipped over. More disconcerting, in the current book (#5), Kate and Joel are not dating nor married, but their relationship was the focus of the previous novel, (#4). If Second Chance Family is read as a standalone novel, these inconsistencies wouldn’t affect the reader but may bother a reader of the Jackson Hole series.
I enjoyed this novel, as it is written in the typical engaging Cindy Kirk style. However, the out of order sequencing bothered me, dropping my rating to a 4.5. But 4.5 rounds up to a 5-star review.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing the book.
Margaret Fisher arrives at attorney Ryan Harcourt’s office believing she needs to sign guardianship paperwork. Her child hood friend Janae and her husband Ty had named her to take care of their son Charlie in their will. Margaret is surprised when Cole Lassiter joins the meeting and shocked when she learns she must share custody of Charlie with Cole—the man who broke her heart in high school. Second Chance Family is a story of new beginnings. Both Cole and Margaret are challenged to put aside their feelings to do what’s right for Charlie. They dated secretly in high school and both of them still held bad feelings over their breakup. Even though there was chemistry between Cole and Margaret--each believed the worst about each other. Margaret and Cole are strong characters—but they are not perfect which makes them relatable. Both of them had difficult childhoods; Margaret’s parents died in a car crash and Cole’s father died and his mother left him and his brother. Loved the conversations—some were emotionally charges and others were brutally honest-- between the couple as they figured out how to put aside their feelings and co-parent six year old Charlie. Trust is an important issue between the couple. Margaret and Cole view the reasons behind their breakup very differently. Cindy Kirk does a fabulous job adding pieces to this puzzle bit by bit to allow the couple to understand what really happened. Loved that Margaret and Cole learned to listen and rely on each other as the novel progressed. The author did not make it easy for Margaret, Cole and Charlie; as there are several emotional roadblocks that need to be resolved before they could truly become a family. .Second Chance Family has all the feels—it’s an emotional story of loss, grief, love , forgiveness and new beginnings. I highly recommend this feel good story which tugs at your heartstrings!
I am admittedly partial to books with kids or babies in them. There is just something that draws me to the idea of a new family being formed, regardless of the circumstances.
I am also a huge fan of series set in particular areas (Jackson Hole is now a bucket list place for me to visit!) ... because I love revisiting characters i have previously met in the past and finding out how they are doing; OR, diving deeper into characters I may have already come across but had not had a chance to "meet" yet.
This book definitely ticks both those boxes for me! High school sweethearts who have not had the best of partings plus a child dealing with the loss of his parents equates to a story of how Meg and Cole learned to put aside their animosity to become a family. Of course, there were sparks and spats along the way. But there was also undeniable chemistry, a true concern for Charlie and his feelings and future, and a letting go of past hurts in order to fully move on and be a family.
This book was a sweet read. I cannot stress enough how well Cindy's books are written with enough heat, enough heart and enough hullaballoo! I am so glad I met this new family, and that now, they are part of the virtual friends I have made in Jackson Hole. I cannot wait to catch up with them the next time I am in Jackson Hole, that is for sure.
*I was sent an ARC of this book but this review and all opinions herein are my own, and this review is submitted voluntarily.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. Cindy Kirk does it again. Margaret Fisher, Travis’ sister, and Cole Lassiter came back to town thinking they would each get custody of Charlie. Janae, Margaret’s best friend, and Ty left Charlie orphaned after a horrible car wreck. They forgot to mention that they would share custody of Charlie and would need to stay in Jackson Hole for at least 6 months or forfeit their custody.
This plan came with a plethora of hitches. The biggest hitch is that Cole and Margaret know each other. They tried to make a go of a relationship in high school but it ended terribly due to mistakes on both their parts. Despite being separated for so long, there is still a connection between the two. They both also notice that Charlie needs both of them to start heading towards his new normal. Another hitch is a secret that Cole is hiding that could tear this new family apart before it gels.
You’ll throughly enjoy this up and down rollercoaster ride. Will these to get it together for Charlie’s sake? It’s worth the read to find out. As always, all the a Jackson Hole characters are around throwing parties and gossiping. I always love that part the best. The good thing about a series, you get to hear from characters you already know. Cindy is one of the best with making you love a little town and everyone in it.
Margaret Fisher (Meg) had grown up in Jackson Hole; however, she moved away after high school. Although she moved away, she remained close to her best friend, Janae. When Janae and her husband, Ty, are tragically killed in a car crash, their son, Charlie, was left parentless. Luckily, Janae and Ty had thought ahead and had had their lawyer, Ryan Harcourt, draw up guardianship paperwork listing both Meg and her high school sweetheart Cole Lassiter to take custody of Charlie in the event of their demise. Unfortunately, Cole broke Meg’s heart in high school, and now they have to figure out how to share custody without killing one another. Will they figure out how to put their past hurts and anger behind them so they can take care of Charlie properly? Or will the secret that Cole is hiding destroy them? Second Chance Family by Cindy Kirk is an absolutely phenomenal read! I love Cindy’s unique writing style that quickly draws you into the lives of her characters. Once you have read a few pages, you won’t be able to put it down until you finish it.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. Meg and Cole have had a relationship in the past, but miscommunication causes them to break up. Fast forward many years and their paths cross again, only this time they're both fighting for Charlie, their best friends' son. Meg and Cole learn to trust each other again, but there are still secrets that jeopardize their relationship. I love that Cindy Kirk shares what seem to be true feelings a child may have when losing his parents, and how she portrays Meg and Cole navigating how to raise and guide Charlie during his time of loss. I also appreciate how Cindy Kirk shows a slow building of Meg's and Cole's relationship since the title of the book is Second Chance Family.

Another sweet, small town romance that is a pretty quick read. Once I picked it up, I read straight through until I reached the last page. This one concentrates on Cole and Meg's second chance at romance.
I am always a sucker for a book with a sweet kid, and single parents. I thought Charlie's scenes added a lot to the book. The sadness, trauma, and other difficulties he experienced tied into a number of similar issues that both Cole and Meg had experienced.
I also liked that the hostility between Cole and Meg did not last for the majority of the book. I dislike those books were the couple is angry with one another until the very last chapter and then everything becomes suddenly perfect.
We got to follow the path as Cole and Meg started to unwind the mistakes of the past. I just wish there had been a bit more dialogue in the scene Meg had with Ed.
Another enjoyable visit to Jackson Hole with a couple of twists and turns before Cole and Meg get to their HEA.

This is another great small-town story. I am coming to love stories with a child involved and while I felt the grief and sadness at the beginning with Charlie's loss of his parents, I am glad that the mood improved fairly quickly. The author shows yet another angle on how past assumptions can have an effect for years and how secrets tend to come out before you come clean but love ends up prevailing.
This is a great standalone story but as someone that has read the series, I had a couple of "wait, what?!" moments when it came to secondary characters as I felt like I missed stuff in between installments, this happened with the last book too which may be why it bugged me so much this time. This is not something that I had experienced with the Good Hope series. It's nothing that affects the enjoyment of the primary storyline but it's distracting to me as I have to fight the urge to stop reading and go back and check stuff.
I received an advanced review copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
: “I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it.” Second Chance Family is the fifth book in Cindy Kirk's Jackson Hole series. It can be read as a stand alone story or as the next in the series. This story focuses on Cole Lassiter and Margaret Fisher. Both are locals of Jackson Hole that left to pursue their careers away from the small town. Margaret and Cole have returned to Jackson Hole both thinking that they are signing paperwork to take sole custody of Charlie, their mutual friends Ty and Janae's son who have recently died in a car accident. Their friends had other ideas and have granted both custody. Cole and Margaret used to date in high school but then circumstances got in the way and they parted ways. Is Janae playing matchmaker from beyond the grave by granting the two of them custody? This book is an easy read and once started, couldn't put it down. Does true love conquer all? Can hearts heal? Can Cole and Margaret live happily together for Charlie's sake? Read on to find out. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
WOW – this story was something else – second chance to forgiveness.
WOW – this story was something else – second chance to forgiveness. This story is about Cole, Margaret, and Charlie. It starts of by being at Jackson Holes attorney’s office and Charlie with Lexi, the social worker. Margaret is there to meet with Ryan for the reading of the will that Janae, her best friend, and Charlies mom, had left behind. She knew that she was going to be the guardian to Charlie but didn’t understand why they were waiting for another person to come. Well that other person was someone who broke her heart 15 years ago, Cole. He had just had surgery when Janae and her husband Ty had been in the accident that took their lives, but spared Charlie. Although the story is somewhat sad because of a child being left alone, it also brings a lot of forgiveness and understanding of one couple toward a deceased friend. I loved it. Cindy never disappoints with her small-town stories, and I can’t wait to read the next one!
Meg and Cole are shocked to learn that they have joint custody of their friends' little boy, whose parents died in an accident. The problem is, after a brief relationship in high school, Meg and Cole bitterly parted ways, each blaming the other. Bur for little Charlie's sake, they will try to put their differences aside.
This was another heartfelt entry in the Jackson Hole series - Charlie was adorable, and I REALLY liked how the couple put him and his needs first. There were some sweet, tender moments all round, and the last paragraph of the book made me laugh :)
This can be read as a stand alone or as part of the Jackson Hole series. We see some characters from previous books, but there are no spoilers for those books and nothing we needed to know from those books for this one.
My thanks to the author and publisher for the chance to read and review Second Chance Family. I enjoyed it!

After the loss of his parents Janae and Ty, Charlie was set to live with his parent's friends, Cole and Margaret "Meg". Cole and Meg dated in high school but broke up when Cole felt he could not trust Meg. Cole is now CEO of a coffee company and Meg works in PT. Cole moves to Jackson Hole which is part of the requirements of Janae and Ty's will. Meg and Charlie move in with Cole, and they must learn to trust each other, rely on one another and parent Charlie together. Cole breaks the trust when he attempts to get full custody of Charlie, who is actually his son from an affair with Janae. Can Meg trust Cole? They must learn to trust each other again to make a second chance family for Charlie.
Cole and Meg are a couple of wonderful characters who inherit Charlie, a six year old boy. Their challenge is not only to recover from losing best friends and raising the surviving child but also overcoming a hate for each other. It is a wonderful story of love, loss, understanding and forgiveness. This book comes at an opportune time as the world feels loss and despair so it is nice to be reminded that hope is around every corner if you are willing to open your heart and forgive. I was given an advance readers copy to review. I highly recommend this book because it is medicine for the soul. I have a son with dyslexia so I also thank the author for shining a light on this issue. Take a break from the madness, read this book and let your heart smile.
Second Chance Family : "I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it” Cole Lassiter and Meg Fisher had a relationship in high school, unfortunately through a mis-understanding, their relationship paid the price and years went by before they saw each other again. An emotional ride of love, grief, and healing with the help of small-town friends…what Kirk does best.

A heartwarming story of two people who don't care for each other finding a way to make a family for an orphaned little boy. Meg and Cole dated in high school and each blamed the other for their break-up. I liked how Cole was willing to work with Meg for the sake of Charlie, the 6-year-old they were given joint custody of, even though part of him is still hurt over what happened years ago. Their attraction is still there and it was fun watching them slowly work towards each other again. When Meg found out a secret Cole was keeping from her she thought she was done with Cole, but Cole persisted and eventually won the day. A satisfying story of love and family. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. Second Chance Family is the fifth book in the Jackson Hole series. This novel welcomes previous town favorites like Lexi, the social worker, and introduces Charlie. Charlie is a young boy who not only lost his parents in a accident but is being placed in the care of his godmother, Meg. However, to make the tragic situation worse, Meg learns she must share custody with Cole, her past flame. Awkward or a second chance for forgiveness and creating a loving family for Charlie? Ms. Kirk does a great job of showing how the characters must deal with their past to create their future. This is a story that will cause you to feel all the emotions and is a nice addition to the Jackson Hole series.
I enjoyed finding out how Clay and Meg were able to heal a miscommunication from when they were teenagers.
I was really glad that Janae and Ty had planned a home for Charlie in case something ever happened to them so he wouldn’t end up in foster care.
Seeing Meg and Clay come together to help Charlie through the loss of his mommy and daddy really helped them become a family.
I have read a lot of the Jackson Hole books but never knew how Meg and Clay became a couple. It is a great community for friends and family who support and encourage one another. I was blessed to receive an advanced copy.
This is the fourth book in the Jackson Hole series. Each book can be read as a stand alone but having read the prior books help give the reader a little more insight into the other characters. This book is a nice second chance romance with two likable main characters. It was a quick read which was nice but also felt that because it was a quick read there was much of the story left unsaid and many things just brushed over. Over all it was a very enjoyable story and I found myself smiling while reading it - and that is a sign of a good book!
I received an ARC of this book from the author for my honest review
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Second Chance Family from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. Margaret’s best friend Janea and husband Tyler were killed In a car accident. They left behind their son Charlie to their close friends Margaret(Meg) and Cole. Meg and Cole are both surprised by the news that they will be sharing custody. Many years ago Cole and Meg were friends but know one new. A misunderstanding has kept them from speaking for years. Making the most out of tough situation Meg moves in with Cole to make the transition easier on Charlie. Keep reading it’s a great story with e few surprises.
From the first page I could not put this sweet story down. Both Cole and Margaret have been mad at the other for many years since high school. Each feeling their heart was broken by the other. So when their friends died in a car accident and they were each named to have custody of Margaret’s godson neither of them were very happy. I loved reading how their story came together as they rekindled what was once lost. I highly recommend this sweet romance as two people are brought back together by fate and learn to find a love they never lost. “I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it.” Meg never thought in a million years she would have to make good on a promise to her best friend. When she hears new that stuns her, she is faced with having to make good on that promise. Never did she think that she would also run into her old flame Cole. Cole never though he would see Meg again, but here he sits in a Lawyers office hearing things he never thought he would. How can he make her go away, how can he do the things he needs with her beauty staring at him. True love does work it magic in this book. Great read, great characters, fun story. A true MUST read.
Neither gives the other a chance to explain they make assumptions and, then proceed as if they are facts. And they don't do it once when they are kids then learn their lesson as adults. No, they repeat patterns. He thinks she's ashamed of him even though he's a successful adult. She thinks he doesn't trust her and she's right. He doesn't tell her things until he has to. Heck, he could have set up a new pattern by blurting out his feelings and hopes for the future. Instead, he let her stew. He doesn't trust that she won't hurt him. And they will run into this pattern over and over again because it was never acknowledged or dealt with.
Margaret Fisher and Cole Lassiter are assigned guardians of six year old Charlie after his parents are killed in an auto accident. Unbeknownst to Margaret Cole thinks he might be Charlie’s biological father. Once his paternity is proven he plans to file for sole custody. In the meantime Cole is working with Margaret to provide a stable home for Charlie so soon after losing his parents. Will they be able to get past the hurts from their teenage years and become a true family?

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. I really enjoyed this book. Meg and Cole were great characters. Both never got over their teenage break up with each other and harboured a lot of resentment to each other. Along comes Charlie the adorable child that they both love who needs them both. They both have to examine their unresolved feelings for each other before they can move on with their life. Emotional up’s and downs throughout this book but I could not put it down. Another great book with a HEA
