Ingman is tevens hoofd van de masteropleiding Children’s Book Illustration aan Goldsmiths, University of London. Ramona Reihill heeft jarenlang gewerkt als kinderboekenredacteur, onder andere bij de Engelse uitgever van de nijntje-boeken. Samen schreven zij een boek waarin alle facetten van Dick Bruna’s leven en werk aan bod komen. Aan de hand van uniek materiaal uit Bruna’s privé-archief werpt het nieuw licht op een leven dat geheel in het teken stond van kunst, van zijn veelgeprezen ontwerpen voor posters en boekomslagen tot zijn geliefde creatie nijntje.

About the author

Born in 1963, Bruce Ingman is a British picture-book author and illustrator. He was born in Liverpool, and studied fine art at Nottingham Trent University and illustration at the Royal College of Art, London. He has taught at a number of art colleges and has illustrated for magazines, including British Vogue and The Sunday Times. He published his first book, When Martha's Away, in 1995, and has gone on to illustrate a number of other authors' books, including multiple titles from the celebrated Allan Ahlberg. Ingman regularly gives talks and workshops in schools, theatres and at literary festivals, including Cheltenham, Edinburgh and Oxford, and he is a founding Ambassador for the House of Illustration, the world’s first dedicated home for the art of illustration.

Wat een fantastisch boek was dit! Echt prachtig geschreven over het leven van Bruna, over alles wat hij heeft gemaakt en gedaan, tot zijn dood in 2017. Ik heb ontzettend genoten en al wist ik al wat dingen ik heb ook nieuwe dingen geleerd (en zo vond ik het enorm schattig dat hij een hond had alleen maar om met zijn overbuurmeisje te kunnen wandelen als zij haar hond uitliet). Er waren mooie tekeningen, schetsen, ontwerpen, omslagen van boeken te vinden en ik vond het allemaal geweldig om te zien. Hij heeft echt van alles geprobeerd in termen van stijlen, op zoek naar zijn eigen stijl, erg leuk om te zien. En natuurlijk is er ook Nijntje. Want dat is natuurlijk een belangrijk deel van zijn leven.
Bruna is een van mijn favoriete tekenaars/artiesten en ik ben nog steeds verdrietig dat hij in 2017 is overleden. :(
Ik vind het ook erg prachtig dat dit boek, passend bij Nijntje/Dick Bruna, knalgeel is.
Echt een aanrader als je een fan bent van Dick Bruna en zijn tekeningen en als je meer wilt weten over zijn leven.

I have a life-long love of the work of Dick Bruna though I knew nothing about him or his working style. After reading “Dick Bruna: The Illustrators” my understanding of him, his art, and other artists like him has been broadened. I am able to better appreciate what I see while retaining the sense of awe and delight I have always had for Bruna’s work. Bruce Ingman’s book has taken me deeper into a world I did not really know existed. And I am so glad I did. I look forward to learning more about Bruna’s work and visiting his museum in The Netherlands, hopefully sometime soon. If you like learning about artists, graphic designers, or the working methods of artists you will enjoy the informative, but quick read. I recommend it.

The Illustartors is een Engelse boekenreeks uitgegeven om het werk en leven van een belangrijke illustrator uit te lichten. In deze vertaling komen we meer te weten over de geweldige Dick Bruna. Geboren als Hendrik Magdalenus Bruna. Omdat hij een mollige baby was werd hij door zijn moeder algauw Dik of Dikkie genoemd wat dus later geleid heeft tot Dick. Als kleinzoon van de oprichter van uitgeverij A.W. Bruna & Zoon stond het al voor zijn geboorte vast dat hij zijn vader zou opvolgen. Maar dat draaide toch even anders uit, tegen de zin van zijn vader.

Dick was een stille, dromerige jongen die er van droomde om te gaan tekenen. Hij was gefascineerd door kunst en had geen zakelijk instinct (gelukkig kwam hij al snel in contact met mensen die dat wel hadden en samen met hem de eerste stappen legden voor zijn latere boeken). Dick begon met het illustreren van de covers van de Zwarte beertjes pocketreeks, uitgegeven door zijn vader. Mede door die covers werd die reeks een enorm succes. Later kwamen daar eigen boeken bij, kinderboeken, die in feite begonnen als ode aan de kunst. Zoals zijn eerste boek De appel, verschenen in 1953.

In 1955 verscheen het eerste (toen nog rechthoekige) boek over het witte konijn nijntje. Wat begon als een vakantie-voor-het-slapengaan-verhaaltje voor zijn zoontje, werd een wereldwijde hit. Iedereen kent nijntje, iedereen is fan. Het is heel tof om te zien en te lezen hoe nijntje ontstaan is en hoe ze langzaamaan de vorm kreeg die ze nu heeft. (In het begin had ze bijvoorbeeld schuine ogen en oren.)

Dick Bruna heeft heel zijn leven geprobeerd om met minder, mensen meer blij te maken. En dat is hem goed gelukt. Wereldwijd zijn er generaties mensen die opgroeien met zijn werk, zijn beelden zijn iconisch en herkenbaar. Dit boek is dan ook een prachtig eerbetoon aan de mens achter de trefzekere, rake lijnen en kleuren die hem kenmerken. Behalve een overzicht van alle soorten werk die hij maakte (naast boekomslagen en eigen boeken, posters, kattenbelletjes voor zijn vrouw en postzegels bijvoorbeeld) krijg je ook een inkijkje in het (gedisciplineerde) leven van een ware kunstenaar. Een prachtig (vormgeven) boek dat elke Bruna fan moet hebben.

This Thames and Hudson series delights me by being beautifully illustrated itself and informing the art work with some biography, bibliography, and most of all, the artists' working method & space. Bruna's studio especially appeals and I would enjoying seeing it in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, where it was reconstructed. I'd rather see it in situ, but I'm sure they describe the context. It seems it wasn't in his home, since he was a fixture riding his bike there almost daily. His decision to quit abruptly when his health started to fail startles, but everyone handles challenges and changes their own way. This brief overview makes me want to know more. I was vaguely aware of Miffy as a child but the bunny wasn't one of my beloved. I'm surprised to learn he had a character Snuffy the dog. The was a nickname the family had for me in the 70s. Did we get it from Bruna? I'll have to ask Mom. Either way, I must get myself a copy of Snuffy's adventures. And I eagerly await the upcoming volume on Tove Jansson.

Ik hebt het boek vandaag gekocht in het Centraal museum in Utrecht. Ik heb zijn atelier boven in het museum bezocht en was gelijk verkocht. Ik heb het boek daarom ook in een dag uitgelezen.

Zo lang als ik mij kan herinneren heb ik al Nijntje gekeken en gelezen. Nijntje is iets wat ik altijd leuk heb gevonden en waarschijnlijk ook altijd leuk zal vinden. Daarom was ik zo nieuwsgierig naar wie Dick Bruna nou precies was.

Dit boek vertelt van A tot Z zijn levensverhaal en carrière. Het begint met zijn geboorte en je leest hoe hij altijd al creatief is geweest. Het gaat over de band met zijn vader en dat dat vaak heeft gebotst. Maar dat hij uiteindelijk toch zijn eigen pad kiest en hoe het ontwikkeld als kunstenaar. In het boek staan ook veel illustraties, boek covers, schilderijen en schetsen van Bruna. Je ziet echt naarmate hij ouder wordt dat zijn stijl veranderd en met hem mee groeit.

Ik vond het een ontzettend mooi en interessant boek en heb heel veel geleerd over wie Dick Bruna precies is en hoe zijn stijl in de jaren is ontwikkeld.

Without knowing much about the artist himself, I have long been a fan of Dick Bruna's work and this beautiful book from The Illustrators series has ignited that all the more. I loved getting to know more about Bruna's childhood, background as an artist and his creative process (I particularly enjoyed discovering, as a fellow Matisse fan, that his books were in fact created with papercuts and not paints as I initially assumed) along with his influences. Reading books like these always make me return to my childhood dream of being an illustrator and fill me with such inspiration and admiration and I genuinely just didn't want the book to end! We're already thinking about when we will take our own holiday to Utrecht and see Bruna's artwork.

an absolutely lovely biography of this brilliant illustrator, who is mostly known for his children's work (MIFFY!) but also (before Miffy) created book covers for his father's Dutch publishing firm for greats such as Georges Simenon's Maigret series. this looks at his influences as well as his process, along with his great legacy, which truly cannot be overstated. lots of beautiful illustrations and photos of Bruna throughout his life accompany this text - with plenty of Miffy (and the evolution thereof) for us fans.

Particularly interesting is the development of Miffy's look over the years from creation in 1955 through to the 2000's - I had no idea that Miffy had changed look. Worth reading if you don't know much about Dick Bruna (which I didn't). Many full colour illustrations which clearly show some artists influence on his work. I particularly liked seeing examples of his working methods and the evolution of Miffy.
