Aadhi (आधि ) by Usha Sherchan is an enticing peek into the indescribable tales of harrowing suuferage and re-discovery of a woman ; who was scarred for life after she was sexually abused, harassed and silenced by her uncle . To avoid further sexual abuses and to escape from the prying eyes of her monster uncle; she elopes to the capital Kathmandu after receiving romantic proposal by her close friend`s elder brother ; wherein she ties the nuptial knot in secret .
Few yrs down the marital life; as she slowly opens up to the love and affection; her hubby abuses her sexually against her will; and even begins affairs with office boss . This particular case revokes harsh memories of reports circulating about forceful, lustful molestation and sexual exploitation against wife`s wills by vile hubby. Social media commentary on such news were pretty divided ; with majority laying a claim that women reporting such abused were tarrying off with extramarital partners , and some daring to put the entire blame on womenfolk. The ensuing conflicts and marital rape force her to separate from her hubby; and take charge of her own life and kid. After all; why should husband treat their wife contradictory to the promises of staying faithful , true and shower unwavering love and support to women ?
Upon deciding to commit suicide , the thought of her only child compels her to set life anew , and seek psychiatric help. The psychiatrist nudges her to keep herself busy and engage in social service ; and live for the sake of her offspring . The climax in indeed wonderful and proves that there is a certain light at the end of each and every darkness.
The novel is a micocosm of those womenfolk , who suffer in marriage due to the male ego, those who are scarred for life following sexual harassment and abuses at the hand of known people than strangers , those who decide to survive for their offspring and doesn't want to see others suffer the same fate ; and those womenfolk who seek to begin life anew with a set purpose and direction.
Truly enjoyed reading the novel; and also get a glimpse into what hurried marital life , sans clear thinking and analysis might lead one to.
Also, as the name Aadhi suggests; the book is heavily centred around the emotional turbulence of the lead character. Though I didn`t feel that all males are vile, deceptive and lust after women (for bodily pleasure and so on) and even disrupt the holiness of marital ties; I am certain characters of male depicted here can be found in our society. After all; humans are not necessarily devoid of flaws, insanity and obscure , deceptive - exploitative persona.
