Useful tips and beautifully illustrated and laid out. Has definitely made me think. However, the tips don't always apply 100% and I would have liked advice on more diverse scenarios (e.g. there's lots of info on how to buy a great energy efficient washing machine, but none on what you can do if you're stuck with a shitty old one). I also didn't particularly care about the tips from bloggers and fashion people.
It reads almost more like a magazine than a book - each page only has a couple of paragraphs at most, hitting the practical essentials of each point without digressing into narration. The design is stunning - beautiful illustrations on every page.
The organizational is also really logical. There are four sections - how to buy, wear, care, and dispose. Each section starts with an overview of the problem, with statistics for how our society's current habits for the given activity are unsustainable. In the wrong hands these stats could easily be accusatory, but they take a very neutral and empathetic tone. They also don't dwell on the problems - it's only a page or two spread for each of the four sections. The dominant tone of the book is one of positivity and empowerment - focusing on how we can be the solution rather than panicking about the problems.
After the introduction, they alternate between listing tips (any list-lovers will adore this book!) for specific activities (e.g. how to be smarter about drying your clothes to maximize their lifespan while minimizing energy consumption), separated by sections on specific people in the conscious-wardrobe movement. These give a brief bio, then the guest has the opportunity to share a few of their favorite tips. Then there's a page of pictures, then they move onto the next subject with another list. It gives it a great pace - I would read about one activity each night before bed (a list, guest tips, and the pictures).
I really enjoyed this book. It's a fun and gorgeous read, yet incredibly practical! And it's one of the rare eco-friendly books that really strikes a positive tone focusing on solutions. Highly recommend.
2.5/5 - i agree with other readers. this book lacks alternatives and examples. while the first half was educational, inspiring, the second half of Dress [with] Sense didn't have the "exciting" writing, so ready it wasn't as fun.
I picked up this book randomly from my local library and it's actually an interesting book—full of diagrams, illustrations and easy-to-read paragraphs. Actually, I really like how the material is presented in this book, it's really pretty.
I've never been a fashionista but I do admit that I'm one of those women who has a wardrobe that's full of clothes and still sometimes says "I don't have anything to wear!" There are clothes that I've hold on to forever even though they no longer fit. There are clothes that I buy on impulse and never wear. There are clothes that I couldn't bear to donate because they have been gifts.
...And all the way I'm contributing towards climate change.
Anyways, it's refreshing to read this book and learn more about the fashion industry. It's quite a recommended read for those who are environmental and fashion conscious.
About a quarter of the book is just repeating the few key ideas that was mentioned earlier on. I also expected a short conclusion at the end to wrap things up, but there was none of that. Could have had a more satisfying way of ending the book (like a summary or list of ways to become a more conscious fashionista or something).
I did like the tips and illustrations. Well-organised book that was easy to read and offered a lot of insights into the fashion and retail industry in a palatable manner. Real-life examples were also good.
A brief but jam-packed summary of how to be a more conscientious fashionista over the entirety of your clothes' lives. From buying to recycling, Redress (an NGO based here in HK!) has compiled an enlightening introduction for the environmentally-conscious.
The illustrations and photos were nice but did not personally add much for me. I feel like the chapters were a bit short yet repetitive at times, so I didn't leave feeling entirely satisfied. Still, I learned a lot - particularly about how to care for clothes better - and am more motivated to curate an eco-conscious wardrobe, so this is a major win for me.
I'll definitely be recommending, and loaning, this book out!
Inspiration for rethinking the choices I make in purchasing clothes—new vs. used? sustainable fibers vs. manmade?—and also for what I choose to keep in my closet. I'm not a minimalist by any means, but I'm coming to believe there must be a better way to dress than the constant pursuit of "new" urged on us by retailers (a new collection every month? really, do we need that much?). Also loved the tips on caring for clothes.
Very clearly lays out tips for decreasing the amount of pollution that goes into clothing - and surprised me in explaining how the fashion industry is the world's second most polluting industry, right behind oil. I wish this book had more specific information in regards to sewing and creating your own wardrobe, not just buying more ethically, or practical tips on making clothing last longer by repairing seams, etc. It gave a good overview, but it wasn't as specific as I would've liked.
For me this one was mid. Some useful tips but a lot were impractical (use soap nuts in the washing machine like where would I even buy those lol?). The chapters were sprinkled with random, unhelpful advice from models and influencers, and sometimes the tone veered toward shaming consumers when I feel the majority of the blame lays with brands. My main takeaway though was to wash your clothes less!!!
This book didn't really tell me anything new but was a good reminder of what we can all do to dress well without causing further damage to the environment (or our wallets!). The refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle message is consistent - sometimes to the point of being repetitive in some of the 'tips' - but reinforced that I'm heading in the right direction.
Muchos datos, a veces repetidos.
Agree with review before - first half was interesting, second half - too obvious info. How to wash clothes, choose a recycling ♻, try to fix, try to sell... I do it already several years, I didn't find something new for me, but maybe who just start to change their way of shopping/using clothing it will be more interesting. But thanks for photo and new interesting people.
I expect more from it. I found some new ideas about how to approach getting new clothes, however - not buying fast fashion, donating old clothes, not using fabric softeners - sorry, we’ve heard it a hundred times already.
Mostly common sense/knowledge information and impractical advice on how to be more green when shopping, repairing, and disposing clothes. Because the few bits of useful information was worth reading through the useless things, I'm giving this three stars.
An interesting read on how to look at your wardrobe and the clothing cycle differently. It was quick and easy, but I found some of the points to be very repetitive. However, I feel like I am more mindful now when thinking of my wardrobe and shopping habits.
