This northwest spun tale will take you on a shaky journey of what ifs. What if the "Big-One" earthquake happened. Lisa Stowe's writing is evocative. As a resident of the area she writes of, I felt I had never seen it quite the way she has. It will make me more aware of my surroundings.
The story is full of diverse characters and mythologies. Her pulling in from ancient lore to present day seemed plausible if not down right possible. She pits the rational up against irrational thoughts. She lays bare human nature under extreme duress. If you need to escape from your day to day hum-drum there is no better place to do it then inside the pages of the misty damp forests of the small mountain town of Index Washington.
If I could have asked for more, it would have been to continue the story. A sequel maybe coming? The one weakness of the book, for me, was it encompasses so many characters that I was disappointed some received less attention or seemed left out of the unfolding tale. The over arching impression I had was that the book was written with movie rights in mind. It at times seemed to dominant scene settings and character development. However, it would make a great big screen movie project.

Very unique book, especially considering I'm very familiar with the small towns she is writing about! Would love to see a part two for this novel.

Scariest book I have ever read. It would make a great movie. It is set in the real town of Index, WA, incorporates local knowledge about the region, and fictionalizes some locals that live there. It is about the aftermath of THE BIG ONE (earthquake) that opens a fault line in the earth to release creatures only before known as myths. I read a little everyday and notice when I'm not reading I'm wondering how it end.
