The Oracles

Rate this book
Plagued by vivid, incessant dreams about a woman whose face he’s never seen, Kurt Ambers lives a lonely, dreary life in the bustling city of Detroit. With a horrid job and no family or friends to seek solace in, his only happiness comes from the brief moments spent with a woman that he has grown desperately attached to, whom he knows only in his dreams. As the months drag on and he becomes more and more detached from reality, he realizes that his only option is to find out whether or not she truly exists and, if she does, where to find her.
Fighting a fairly severe anxiety disorder and raising her two-year-old brother with her older sister, Claire Stellar struggles to live a normal life in the small town of Ouray, Colorado. Her only escape is found in her childhood best friend, who tries his best to help her cope with her difficult life. When she begins having strange, hyper-realistic dreams about a man that she’s never met, she begins to question her mental stability. As her health deteriorates, she is left fighting an internal battle of hoping that he is real, and she will find him, or that he will disappear altogether.

I’m so sorry for what I’m about to say because I love you and I love your content but I want to deliver a swift kick to your shin for putting me through that emotional TRAUMA YOU JUST UNLEASHED ON MY FRIKIN BRAIN. I went into this thinking “oh what a lovely read to take a break from all the dark I read everyday” and then you threw me for a loop over and over and over again. You might as well have ripped my heart from my chest and stomped on it and then dusted it off and handed it back to me. THAT WOULD HAVE HURT LESS. So thanks for making me happy and then worried and then angry and then sobbing uncontrollably and finally satisfied but still reeling by the end. If I could give this 6 stars I would. “Claire’s Thailand fund” made me sob amongst other parts like chapter fucking 40! The audacity. Overall, I’d read this book again and again but I’m still reeling from the emotional whirlwind you just put me through so I need a second to collect my damn self, you beautiful magical writing witch

4.5 rounded up to 5! The emotional journey this book takes you on puts you through the wringer — but I mean that in the best way. I felt every single emotion reading this: happy, sad, frustrated, angry, anxious — Christy did it all! This was such an enjoyable read packed with romance, soul mates, self discovery, conflict resolution, action, adventure and twists and turns! Some parts moved a bit slower but this was well written and I love when a book can make me feel. Christy is a true talent!

A wonderful written book and one of my favorites that I’ve read this year. It is a chunky book but it written in a masterful way that you will have read 50 pages and not even realized it. Looking forward to getting to read volume 2.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful

I can't even count the number of times I cried reading this book. If you have ever experienced obstacles in any type of relationship you will relate to this book. The author writes in a way that speaks to your heart and soul.

This was the best 4 days I have ever spent inside a book.
WOW is the word to describe this story.
Kurt and Claire have never met but they both have very vivid dreams of eachother.

Claire’s mother left her and her sister, Grace, to take care of their baby brother, Ian. Their mother was an alcoholic.

Ben, is Claire’s bestfriend since childhood. They love eachother, as bestfriends..do they feel more?…

Kurt shows up at the house across the street from Claire’s. Ben sees him and has an idea who he is, Claire has shared her dreams with Ben.

It is love at 1st site, the events that take place once they’re together. The trials they go through in their relationship…

This book will have you feeling all the emotions.

Just finished reading "The Oracle's" by Christy Skidmore, and wow! The world-building was absolutely fantastic, with such a rich and detailed setting that really pulled me in. I loved the main characters, especially how complex and flawed they were, making them super relatable. The plot kept me guessing until the very end. Honestly, I can't recommend this book enough!

As clever as it is haunting.

I have to say, I was genuinely shocked by how much this book resonated with me. It’s not something I’d usually pick up; I mean, I don’t even really have a go-to genre. I tend to lean more towards realistic contemporary romance or thrillers rather than sci-fi or fantasy. But after chatting with the author on social media and discovering how lovely she is, I felt motivated to give it a chance.

This book is such a fantastic choice for anyone who loves action-packed adventures mixed with some thought-provoking romance—without getting too steamy. There are a few sweet moments and one intimate scene that stays behind closed doors, but overall, it keeps things pretty clean and the language is mild. What really blew me away was how deep the story goes. It dives into the philosophical and psychological aspects of love and humanity, encouraging you to reflect on your own relationships and experiences.

Now, while there are definitely parts of the book that have a faster pace, a lot of it unfolds at a slower, more informative pace. I’d really encourage anyone to read it cover to cover and give it a fair shot. It’s one of those books that will truly change the way you think about storytelling and writing. I can honestly say it’s one of the most interesting and clever reads I’ve encountered this year.

I found it to be a refreshingly unique read that totally captured my attention, especially towards the end when the pace picked up. I was left in shock and emotionally overwhelmed—something that doesn’t happen to me often.

The way Claire and Kurt connect through their dreams is such an intelligent narrative tactic. It creates this urgency for them to find each other that had me full of anxiety.

What I found interesting is that even though they felt this instant connection through their dreams, they took their time letting their relationship develop naturally. When they finally met, they were swept away to Brazil, where more revelations came to light. It really digs into what it means to love someone and how to sustain that love. The layers of meaning in this book are remarkable. I’m still processing it all—it really left an impression on me.

From Kurt, the dream-haunted loner trapped in Detroit, to Claire, who’s balancing anxiety, a toddler sibling, and her increasingly strange dreams in small-town Colorado, these characters are so fully realized they practically leap off the page (though hopefully not through a portal into your dreams).

Skidmore’s knack for weaving so much raw emotion into every interaction is impressive. Kurt’s struggle with loneliness and Claire’s fraught battle with her own mind make them utterly human. I found myself rooting for them, crying with them, and maybe yelled at them a few times as well.

I was fascinated how the the book explores the liminal spaces between dreams and reality, and really brings them to life. Additionally, the settings chosen are incredibly well written and described - I thought I was for sure sitting in a rainforest in more than one moment (and being from Colorado I was also partial to hearing about it too!).

I am finding that dual POV narratives are definitely my favorite now. And here, it offers fascinating contrasts, much like two opposing mirrors reflecting infinite possibilities, which ties perfectly into the metaphysical questions the book raises. Is destiny real? Are our dreams just internal monologues, or are they maps to something greater? (Cue existential crisis.)

Yes, it’s long—borderline epic—but the length works to its advantage, giving the story room to breathe. By the end, you’ll realize that you won’t want to wake up from the beautiful dreamscape and time with these amazing characters.

A beautiful blend of the surreal and the grounded, The Oracles is for anyone who loves character-driven stories that dig deep into the human condition…or just anyone who wonders what their dreams are really trying to tell them.

I was given a copy to read by the beautifully talented Ms Skidmore herself - but now I have to buy a copy to sit on my shelf. I cannot wait for the next book!!!!

This book had a unique premise, and I was excited to dive into something different with some meat to it.
But unfortunately, the delivery made it a tough, and very long read.
The story starts with a lot of unnecessary exposition. There’s a lot of telling instead of showing, especially when it comes to the character’s emotions. For example, with the anxiety disorder where the reader is told “my anxiety is bad.” A few times is fine, but it was an annoying constant throughout the book. The first person, past tense narrative made it difficult to stay immersed, and felt unnatural.
The relationship between the main characters, we’re told they love each other instantly on meeting, but we don’t get to see them growing together. Instead of meaningful conversations, or shared experiences to deepen their connection, they spend a lot of time doing mundane things like watching TV with the kid. Maybe have one scene where they take her little brother to the park, and they have a meaningful conversation? There was a lot of information dumping, instead of it flowing naturally through dialog.
The book is over 600 pages and many of the scenes and sections that don’t move the plot forward should have been cut. The author repeats herself a lot, and I found myself skimming through many of the pages just to get to something meaningful.
The focus on elaborate world building, where much of it didn’t matter to the actual plot, took attention away from the emotional core of the story. You don’t need 10 chapters to build tension if you know how to do it correctly.
I really wanted to love this book because the core idea is creative, and the connection between the characters had potential. But the writing made it hard to enjoy.
If you’re okay with slow pace, heavy on unnecessary details with some pay off at the end, and are willing to push through, you might still find something in this book to enjoy. But for me, it was a struggle.

With "The Oracles," Christy weaves a tale of soulmates from far flung backgrounds who find each other through abnormal circumstances in order to save the world. The way she introduces each gives us a distinct understanding of where each of the main characters are in their lives and how their love and friendship grows together. I appreciated getting to know each of the characters before their lives were irrevocably changed by the trials fate puts them through. It tormented me to no end watching what had grown between them get challenged by each new circumstance, and once you think it's all over and everything is good, the rug gets pulled out from beneath everyone with the most horrific trial of all. Christy wraps the story up in ways I didn't expect, and that in itself was wonderful.

I'm personally not often a fan of stories told from the first-person perspective, especially when there are multiple characters we experience the story through, but she keeps each character distinct (and makes sure you know who "we" as readers are every time it shifts. I'll be honest it kind of grew on me and definitely makes me want to give it a shot in my own writing. Making me love the story despite an unfavored delivery choice means she did her job well!

This took a while to get through (I don't read as fast as I used to, and I'm actively writing my own book so that carves out time from my schedule) but once I hit around the 70% mark I was so invested I read the remainder of it in one go. I wish I'd gotten through it faster, because now I've got to hit up Soul Ties to see what happens next. This was a harrowing, wonderful book and I can't wait to see where Christy takes me next!

The plot twists got me!

This book took me on a hell of an emotional roller coaster!

First you're drawn in by the two main characters Claire and Kurt as you dive into their struggles in life. Kurt is extremely lonely with no family and no "real" friends. While Claire's character really emphasizes the struggle of pure anxiety, while dealing with other health issues.

They are both just barely existing through life until an outside force brings them together. The romance between them is a slow considering the circumstances, and it is so pure that you cant help but fall in love with them both.

Well when the outside forces, or the spiritual beings, reveal themselves, Claire and Kurt find themselves thrown into this trial with other Oracle couples. A trial that is emotional and brutal and designed to test them beyond imagine. All to save the future generations of earth.

I usually am able to guess the plot line in books, but I was NOT prepared for this plot twist. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I was thrown through a loop, just for it to loop back around to exactly what I had originally thought.

What I loved the most about this book was that it addressed the different love relationships one person could feel. For Claire she held a caring love for her siblings Ian and Grace, a STONG platonic love for her best friend Ben, and then the romantic soul bounding love for Kurt.

I can not wait to dive into Soul Ties and see where this series is heading.

I received a copy of the book from Voracious Readers Only. Claire is a young woman who’s responsible for raising her two year old brother, after their mom abandons the family. Her older sister Grace works to provide financial support so they can continue to live in their home. Claire suffers from anxiety but it’s kept under control with the support from her best friend Ben. Claire and Ben have been inseparable since they were young children. Claire starts dreaming about a young man she’s never met, yet she’s convinced he’s her soulmate. Kurt, a young man living in Detroit has the same dreams and feelings for a woman he’s never met. His dreams finally tell him where his soulmate lives. Of course, it’s Claire who he travels across the country to meet. After they meet and realize that they truly love each other, they receive a mysterious invitation to Brazil. They are provided with passports, air tickets, rides and accommodations. It’s the start of an adventure where they, and several other couples must face ten trials. They are all considered to be oracles and they must successfully pass the trials in order to ensure humanities future survival. It is an excellent read and each oracle is unique in their own way. I won’t divulge any of the story because it’s easier to read, than it is to explain. I gave the book a 4* rating because we never learn why/how the oracles are necessary and we don’t learn what happens with the oracles once their trials are completed.

I could talk about this book and Christy herself for a very long time! I was lucky enough to come across Christy on TikTok where I learned about her books and her story as an author. After getting to know her from afar and then having a few conversations with her I decided to read her book. My only regret is that I didn't read it earlier.

The characters in this book don't feel like they exist because we decided to open the book, they feel like they have always existed. They feel like I may run into them some day out and about. They are well rounded and relatable.

The book is over 600 pages and that is a long book for most people, myself included, but it didn't feel like a 600+ page book. The flow was immaculate and Christy either had tension building or created curiosity that kept me reading.

One of the things that Christy does so well is play with the
perception of reality. She led me down the exact path that she wanted me to take and made me feel comfortable thinking that I knew what was going to happen and in a lot of cases I was wrong.

In my opinion the only difference between Christy Skidmore and another big name author is the eyes that have been on the book and her work definitely deserves all the attention in the world.

If you're a fan of magic, mystery, thrills, love, loss, heartbreak, hero's journeys, quests, and redemption there isn't a doubt in my mind you'll enjoy this book.

I can't wait to read the second book "Soul Ties"!

P.S. My dog, Bear, liked it too!

This book is absolutely wild and I loved it (while being simultaneously heartbroken in some of the best ways). I had no clue what was going to happen next and that was beyond exciting. It is such a unique story that is incredibly compelling and it would be worth reading just for the movement of the plot alone. But there is so much more and that is where the true heart of the book comes out. Wrapped in this incredibly original story, full of action and intrigue and mystery, is a story about love in its starkest, rawest but also most beautiful form. And it's more than just romantic love, though that is a major component. It is about the love of friendship, family and the prevailing nature of that love in the midst of the great pain and strife. The realness of the characters and the realness of their pain and anxiety will speak powerfully to readers, and I truly hope people will grab hold of that beautiful lifeline that runs throughout all of the twists and turns this book presents. And its also just entertaining as heck and you can't wait to see what happens next, so definitely check it out and I'm looking forward to book two immensely!

Where to start?! Christy has written a most masterful story with raw, real emotional conflict and deeply, deeply moving complex relationships filled with love. Love is the theme, love is the driving force behind every step, and it's glorious!
This story will break you -- multiple times -- patch you back together and then shatter you again... But it's all worth it, it's so, so worth it.
Pour yourself a pot of tea and pull over the box of tissues, cuddle into a fluffy blanket and open a box of chocolates; you'll need it. Then dive in, buckle your seatbelt and enjoy this ride. The Oracles is bound to be the best thing you'll read in 2025.
Christy puts her characters through their paces! Together you'll spin through a flurry of feelings leaving your entire soul a tingle with awe, hope, despair, excitement and lots of nail biting fear!
The ending is well worth the turmoil you'll experience -- this is a story that will never leave you. If you've been waiting for something to capture your heart, tear it open and make you feel like you haven't felt in years... This is it. You need this read. You need these characters and the astonishing road they must travel to get to where they are supposed to be.

Well, what can I say about this novel without giving away any spoilers?

Christy Skidmore has crafted an absolutely epic story of trials, hardship and love in The Oracles.
This story is mostly written in the POV's of Claire and Kurt, you you really get to understand their characters, their motivations and thoughts so intimately. You almost feel like you are the characters.

The story moves along at a nice pace. There is a lot of back story at the beginning, but it really sets up the characters and it never holds the story back - it only adds to the complexity of emotion and plotting throughout the book.

The twists and turns just keep coming throughout the story and I thoroughly loved the book!
I highly recommend this gem of a story. It is a contemporary fantasy, with a unique take, a dreamlike quality and the emotional ups and downs of a savage rollercoaster ride. It also handles issues around trauma and mental health in a sensitive, but beautifully written way.

All I need now is to recharge my emotions before I dare enter book two!

An emotional roller coaster

This is a story about lonely, damaged people finding each other - and then the real story begins. In Claire and Kurt you'll find people to invest your emotions in. You find yourself believing in them, rooting for them. Christy Skidmore writes in the conventional world everyday people who are vital and normal, living humdrum lives of dreary workdays in the concrete jungle and health issues that drag them to the doctor's office. Once they meet, it's as if worlds collided and the supernatural side of the story begins. Following these two young lovers as they experience one of the most unique journeys I've read in a long time was both terrifying and heartrending. Skidmore has a gift in describing the details of a torturous experience in agonizing detail. I found myself cringing at times; at others I could feel the characters' fear and frustration. I was devastated at one point and deeply saddened at another. By the end I truly felt I had been on a long journey of my own. This is a book not to be missed!

This story was incredible! I've never encountered anything quite like it. The growth of the female main character is genuinely inspiring, especially for young women who can relate to her journey. The male main character also evolves throughout the story, which I always appreciate in character development. They felt like real, relatable people.

The plot is filled with engaging twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Christy's writing is immersive and beautifully descriptive, making every scene come alive. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, adding depth to their interactions and making their romance feel authentic.

If you're looking for a mix of action and romance, this book is a must-read! I can't wait to dive into more of her work. This was my first experience with Christy's writing, and it certainly won't be my last! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a compelling story with well-developed characters.

I couldn’t put down “The Oracles” by Christy Skidmore. From the very first page, I was drawn into a mesmerizing fantasy world that feels both enchanting and familiar. The characters are incredibly grounded. Their struggles and triumphs resonate with authenticity, making it easy to form deep emotional connections with them.

I found myself completely engrossed, finishing the book in less than 48 hours. Skidmore’s pacing is impeccable. Every twist and turn caught me by surprise, yet they fit seamlessly into the story. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another revelation would turn everything on its head, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

By the end, I finished with tears on my cheeks and a huge smile on my face. “The Oracles” isn't just a fantastic read; it’s an emotional journey that lingers long after the last page. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an unforgettable adventure!

Review: The Oracles by Christy Skidmore

The Oracles surprised me in the best way. I expected something heavy on romance or spice, but what I got was something even more refreshing—a deep, character-driven journey rooted in growth, strength, and fate.

The trials were the true heartbeat of the book. Each one felt purposeful, not just as a plot point, but as a lesson the characters—and readers—could take something from. The way each Oracle had to confront personal challenges, evolve, and rise to meet the moment kept me intrigued the entire time. The final trial especially caught me off guard with its twist, but it tied everything together beautifully.

Skidmore’s writing is smooth, engaging, and layered with just enough mystery to keep you turning pages late into the night. If you enjoy fantasy with substance, emotional stakes, and a journey that sticks with you, The Oracles is absolutely worth the read.

This is a truly great debut novel!

**SPOILERS**

My only complaints are that the relationships between the main characters were too underdeveloped (they never really got to know each other at all and didn’t spend any time together besides in front of a tv for the most part) which made them seem like a high school relationship instead of adults, and the only conversations they had were about work and her being a SAM. It lacked the nuances and depth of relationships. Also, the thing between Ben and Claire was never truly resolved. He should have been dating someone at the end or something along those lines. It was almost made to seem like he was just waiting around to see if she’d choose him. He deserved better.

Other than that the story was truly original and very well written! I definitely recommend it.

✨ "Fate, Love, and the Battle Within" ✨

The Oracles by Christy Skidmore is a story of two broken souls, coming together to face the evils of this world while navigating a relationship mapped out for them by a divine being. The fated bond between Claire and Kurt felt both intriguing and unsettling, making me question what it truly means to be "meant" for someone.

This book weaves love, loss, hardship, and friendship into a powerful narrative about finding strength together, even when individual imperfections make the characters feel powerless. The discussion of mental health—ADHD, anxiety, depression, and autism—is beautifully integrated, making Claire especially relatable. While Kurt wasn’t my favorite (Ben, anyone? 👀), this book left a lasting impression and is definitely worth the read!

I read this book in January while two separate fires licked at the edges of my neighborhood in California. I intended to write a review about this stellar novel then, but between evacuations and life stresses, I forgot to do it. This story is woven into a traumatic time for me and kept me grounded. Claire and Kurt live in my mind. They are so well-written and layered that they feel like real people to me to this day. The love they develop for each other is so deeply satisfying. It is everything. I actually miss them like dear friends with whom I have shared tears, joy, and adventures. And what amazing adventures they are. The paranormal dreams of each other pull you in, and the trials they endure will take you on a thrill ride you never expected.

I wish I could give this novel 10 stars; it's that good, and it will never disappoint.

This was a unique book with relatable issues. The author does a great job of portraying the characters’ mental health and emotional turmoil as the relationships among the characters progresses. I felt the tension in the relationships and the love interests are what had me invested in the storyline. Given the blurb the author wrote, this was totally to be expected. The author has a unique outlook on soulmates and how they come together.

I was torn between four and five stars because the subplot mentioned high stakes, the fate of the world. However, the trials the soul mates had to endure didn’t really seem to have the tension to match the stakes. But considering the author’s blurb focused on the relationships, and thus it was the main plot, I gave it the five stars because the tension among the characters was thoroughly present. I did go on to read book 2 “Soul Ties.”

It was long but cute. My ship didn't sail (big sad), but that happens, and there's a chance for it to happen in the sequel. (And if it doesn't happen... when I catch you, Christy... Christy, when I catch you >:[ jk )

As far as the story:
Two fated lovers follow a divine calling to face trials that will test them as individuals and as a couple. It explores common things couples may go through, as well as situations no one wants to imagine themselves in. It touches on the bond of found family and the jealousy of those who don't understand those relationships. I don't want to put spoilers, but if you are the type of person who wants to watch love face a challenge and fight to win, then this may be the book for you.

A beautiful exploration of love, loyalty, and devotion. We (well most of us probably) all have this dream of finding our Universe-approved soul mate. And most of us probably assume that when we do things will be sunshine and roses. The Oracles dives into the reality of what it means to love somebody with your entire soul.

Watching Claire and Kurt go through their trials was nothing short of heartbreaking. But even through the darkest, lowest times, their love for each other was radiant and beautiful.

This book was brilliantly written and doesn't shy away from the realities of pain, heartbreak, depression, anxiety, but most of all love.

What a ride!

I went into this book completely blind. Literally, I knew the bare minimum of what this book was about. Let me tell you. This story is unlike anything I've ever read. The way Kurt and Claire come together was crazy, though my heart did hurt many times for Ben. I was so heartbroken I was silently sobbing next to my husband, trying not to wake him at 3 a.m. Then that twist...my goodness, so good and slightly caught me off guard. If you're looking for something new or something different from your usual reads, The Oracles by Christy Skidmore is a great place to start. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I definitely would.

At its core, The Oracles is a romance that dives deep into the conflicts of the heart. But what makes this story stand out is the way the author weaves elements of adventure, family saga, and the paranormal into a highly descriptive world. The characters are so developed, by the time you finish reading you feel like you know each one intimately…what they would say, or how they would react in any given circumstance. I especially liked the conflicts each character had within themselves, and how each trusted the other to help them through their journeys. If you like stories about regular people who are thrust into situations that border on the unexplained, this story is sure to leave you with that ever-elusive book hanger every reader craves.
