My writing history: I’ve been involved with children’s publishing for the past 11 years now — I got my start right out of high school, just after turning 18. Since then I’ve published eight books for children and young adults, with six more currently scheduled for release and in various stages of being written and edited. I’ve also contributed material to ten or so other books by other authors and have put out a short story or two.

My most recent release was the debut of my original YA sci-fi series Deviants. The first book, Vesper, was released in stores everywhere in January 2011, with the next two books coming out in Jan. 2012 and Jan. 2013, respectively.

Some brief bio basics: I was born on a US military base in Nuremberg, Germany on July 15, 1982. Currently I live near Seattle, WA, where I am lucky enough to work as a full time writer. Much like the main character of the Deviants series, I’m a pop culture geek who loves to indulge in books, movies, TV, and video games when I’m not working on my own stories.

Agent: I am represented by Michael Stearns of Upstart Crow Literary.

This is the last book of a series that takes place in Dragonlance. This is the one where the final battle for the fate of Nearra happens between Asvoria and our group of companions.

Do you know how a television show has its finale and the last episode contains all of the minor characters in some appearance but the story suffers? That was this book. It seemed like everyone who crossed our path came for the final battle and they all made it within the same time frame. It was a nice attempt at nostalgia but it became groan worthy. The story was a letdown also. Asvoria was too powerful for this world. I have seen hints of this for awhile but this book took it too far. She made Raistlin look like a kitten. I did like the resolution between Nearra and Asvoria and I like where some of the characters are after this adventure. Some not so much as I felt they were left unresolved and I could say the same thing about a couple of different minor story arcs.

This was a disappointment for a conclusion. This series is meant for a YA but I never felt like it was exclusively for them. That changed in this book. I know some of these characters continue to have solo adventures in some more books and I am hoping that some of my issues are corrected.

It was nice to see a few things come together, but honestly the writing is still clumsy and clunky and I found the ending quite unsatisfying.

I think the biggest part of the problem with these books is that the author isn't consistent and several of them choose to completely ignore what the others had done.

In the end, as a soft introduction to the world for a young reader, our for a die hard fan of the series, these are definitely worth the read/listen.

Dragon Spell
(Dragonlance Chronicles The new adventures vol.8)
Jeff Sampson

This book Dragon Spell is about six teenagers and one old wizard in medieval times Nearra, Davyn, Catriona, Sindri, Maddoc, Jirah and Rina. They are all trying to kill an evil sorceress who has possessed Nearra. The evil sorceress also possessed a dragon and is planning to take over the world. After she possessed the dragon she also kidnapped Nearra and flew away to a cave. So the team gets to the cave and there is an entire army ready to help them fight.

I loved this book, but not just the book I loved the whole series. Some of the things that I loved about it are had EPIC battle scenes, the use of medieval weapons. The whole storyline is awesome. The characters acted as if they were in both modern times and medieval times behavior wise which is an aspect I liked. Overall this is the best series I’ve ever read and Im sad that its over.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 because it is, in my opinion the best book series ever. I love this book because it has just enough description, not to much description, not to little. Also the storyline has twists and things that you never would expect would happen.
And the characters showed emotion and feelings and are not soulless like some book characters. This book was the best book I’ve ever read and I recommend it to everyone.

he seven previous books in the DragonLance: The New Adventures series have been leading up to the conclusion in Dragon Spell by Jeff Sampson. I was quite happy to finally get his book in my hands and was very satisfied with the conclusion of this storyline.

Finally, all of the main characters are back together and facing off with Asvoria in the final battle. How can this strange mix of character ever defeat Asvoria in her now, powerful form of the Daystar Dragon? Jeff Sampson weaves a wonderfully magical tale in this conclusion to a story arc that we have all been waiting for.

For any fantasy lover, I highly recommend all eight books in this series (Temple of the Dragonslayer, The Dying Kingdom, The Dragon Well, Return of the Sorceress, Dragon Sword, Dragon Day, Dragon Knight, and Dragon Spell). I thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to more young adult books in the DragonLance world. Way to go Wizards of the Coast!

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.

It kinda irritated me how much emotional distress so many of the main characters went through the whole series, so much self-doubt and spiteful words at each other. Maybe it makes it a more accurate representation of what a quest would have been like, but I feel like the extent of their emotions would have done more permanent damage to their relationships than it did. I still quite enjoyed the series, I also just kept waiting for the characters to get over themselves and move on with life.
