Complicate Me is book one of Reid and Sienna’s duet and book one in the Hawthorn Hills Duet Series. A two-part, angst-filled, slow-burn, epic love story. Complicate Me must be read before Complete Me in order to enjoy the full story.
Life at its simplest is still complicated.
Reid Bowen is her brother’s best friend and the biggest womanizer on campus. She has no business wanting him.
Sienna Parker is forbidden and the sweetest fruit he can never taste. But if he can’t have her, no one can.
Forced together by a road trip home, it will not only test their patience, but also their resolve to stay away from each other.
Bound by their past, it’s the complicated that changes their lives.
The Hawthorn Hills Duet Series follows eight couples. Each two-book duet must be read in order to enjoy the couple’s full story, but the series can be read in any order. You’ll find angst-filled, slow-burn, epic love stories along with topical storylines and some amazingly real and raw characters.
Complicate Me is book one in the first Hawthorn Hills Duet. This books can NOT be read as a standalone and ends on a cliff hanger.
Complicate Me follows Reid & Sienna in a new adult, brother's best friend, epic road trip romance. Its got angst, drama, emotion but its also incredibly sweet, fun & flirty and has enough 90's grunge/punk music references to keep my 90's loving heart happy. I may or may not still have Alanis Morissettes 'Head Over Feet' stuck in my head. This book had such a great feel and aesthetic to it.
Sienna had always envisioned going away to college with her brother Caleb and their best friend Reid having all bonded at a young age through destructive and toxic childhoods growing up. She never expected for Caleb to stay behind to deal with family matters. 2 years into her college experience she still feels guilt over Caleb being left behind as well as dealing with a changed Reid who tends to be more of a nuisance than the boy she grew up secretly wanting, then one day she gets news that requires her to reluctantly return home which Reid volunteers to escort her, que the epic road trip. A few days on the road to a place she never thought she would return to with a boy who drives her crazy yet she can't stay away from. What could possibly happen.
Sienna is such a feisty, funny, bold and sassy girl and I absolutely loved her. She didn't have the best childhood growing up but she is definitely a fighter and stronger because of it she even if she doesn't always see it.
Reid is a bit of a playboy and doesn't feel like he is a good enough guy for Sienna but he is also very sweet, caring, empathetic and very protective of her even if that means protecting her from him. I wanted to throttle him a lot in the beginning and tell him to kindly wake up so getting to see his progression was my favourite part of the story.
Their story had a lot of ups and downs, some very frustrating moments, some compassionate moments and I loved watching how these two broken yet beautiful souls understood each other and were constantly drawn to each other even when trying to avoid their chemistry and connection.
I did slowly and correctly figure out how this story might end. Certain circumstances and situations that I just new would be involved but I still loved how it played out and can not wait to see how their story concludes and how the set up for the 2nd couple (just seeing their book titles listed had me all giddy) in the series comes about because I'm just sitting here going GIVE ME ALL THE STORIES NOW please and thank you.
《book aesthetic made by me. I do not own the pictures, all found via pinterest》
Uhh, ok. I had to think on how to rate and review this novel for a few days and to be honest, I’m still on the fence.
Sienna and Reid have been best friends since childhood, along with Sienna’s twin brother Caleb. They both have been crushing on each other but have never acted on their feelings, even when Caleb stays behind in their hometown while they head off to college together. Things change and the two drift apart in a drastic way, until they are called home and embark on a road trip across the country together.
I know it was said that this was a super slow burn romance, but to be honest it took a lot for me to fully immerse myself into the story and the characters. I didn’t truly begin to enjoy the book until at least 30%, and I think that had a lot to do with that fact that I just couldn’t connect with Sienna. I couldn’t relate to her at all, and whilst I understood why she acted the way she did, I just found her irritating and frustrating and her mood swings gave me whiplash. The saving grace was Reid. God, I LOVED Reid. He has some seriously swoon worthy lines that had my heart fluttering, is caring and thoughtful and his whole world revolves around Sienna.
But I hung in there and Sienna seemed to relax and become more easy going the further the book went on. I loved the changing dynamic of their friendship. It started volatile and filled with anger, longing and defensiveness, but progressed to innocent touches, playful banter and a comfortable peace surrounding them. It was adorable and I couldn’t keep the smile off my face.
Overall, I rated Complicate Me 4 stars. Simply for the fact that the writing was exceptional, I loved the concept of the plot and I absolutely adored Reid. Of course, Claire Raye dropped a huge bombshell for the cliff hanger and I am chomping at the bit to read the conclusion in Complete Me. There are so many questions flying around in my head and I NEED THE SECOND BOOK NOW!!!
ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
The moment I started reading this book I was completed sucked in to the story and falling in love with Reid and Sienna. Complicate Me takes you on an adventure that you’ll never want to end.
Reid and Sienna grew up together, along with Sienna’s twin brother Caleb. They come from different backgrounds, yet the three of them were the best of friends. Due to family life Caleb stays in Rhode Island and Reid and Sienna head to California for college. Two years have gone by and now they have to return back home. A cross country road trip will change their relationship, but will everything be okay once the trip is over?
The chemistry between Reid and Sienna is amazing. I loved the banter they had throughout the story. There is an easy going feeling when it comes to their relationship from the years of knowing each other. Reid is protective of Sienna because her brother asked him to watch over her, but also because of his feelings for her. I love that Sienna isn’t afraid to make a move. Throughout their road trip you can feel their tension in the beginning, the emotions were palpable and you could feel that tension shift and the heat pick up.
One thing I wasn’t expecting with the story was how emotional it made me. Sienna and Caleb’s past broke my heart. Yet, they still manage to make it work. They formed their own little family with Reid. The emotions continued all the way to end of this book. The last 15% of the story I felt like my jaw was hanging open and my heart rate was spiking. I wasn’t ready for any of that and I can’t wait to see how Reid and Sienna’s story continues in Complete Me!
Complicate Me is an emotional, steamy, angsty road trip romance and a MUST READ!
This is my first read of this set of authors. It's always fun to jump into something new. This is a best friends sister romance. It is a college age, new adult trope. Reid and Sie are really best friends as well since they all grew up together.
They head out on a road trip from California to the east coast to help out Sienna's brother with the family business. That is honestly the best part of the book. The road trip is sweet and thoughtful and steamy. Great humor between these two forever friends. They may have started the trip as frenimies but spending all that time together, they were able to get to the source of their discord and reconnect as friends again.
The road trip is the book. There is a huge cliffie and part two of the duet hopefully resolves some things. I am not always a fan of characters who jump to outlandish conclusions and just react in an awful kneejerk way. We will see how this plays out.
I enjoyed getting to know these two. I am hoping they get the HEA they deserve.

4 stars!! This was my first book by Claire Raye and I fell in love with Reid and Sienna’s story!! What I loved most about this book was the road trip aspect!! I’m always looking for a good road trip romance and this was it!! Their story was filled with just the right amount of angst and that forbidden brothers best friend aspect!! Book one does end on a cliffhanger and it leaves you with a lot of questions but I’m looking forward to part two!! Thank you Claire Raye for the ARC!! I can’t wait to read more of your writing!!
Complicate Me is book One of the Hawthorn Duet. It was my first read of author Claire Raye. I honestly had this book pegged as a typical Best friend’s sister but really it was an enemy to lovers. And Sienna pushes back and holds a grudge like a boss! It took a lot for her to move past her dislike of Reid and see him. Reid actually really cares about Sienna but had a hard time showing it in a healthy manner. I am not usually a fan of New Adult sub genre. I feel like the characters lack wisdom and thought in their action. Complicate Me is an awesome example of a New Adult Romance. I really liked Reid. He is so torn over his attraction to Sienna and his loyalty to Caleb, Sienna’s twin brother. He is very careful in his interactions with Sienna once they start their road trip. In the beginning of the book I don’t think he really sees beyond himself but as the road trip goes, he just wants to care and comfort Sienna. He is crazy protective of her while they are still on campus. He seems to do a lot to ruin any relationship she might have with a guy. Justin is a total Dbag but we needed him in order to appreciate how much Reid really cares. All the friends in Reid’s life know that he has a great affection for Sienna but refuses to act on it. Instead he is very much the man whore on campus. One-night stands and interactions that have little meaning to him.
A Family emergency at home leads to Sienna needing to go back to Rhode Island even though it is the last place on Earth she wants to go. Sienna doesn’t really have the money to go home and refuses to take money from Reid. Reid decides to take charge and decides to drive her home to be with her brother Caleb. Their Road trip is anything but easy. No one wants to drive from California to Rhode Island. You get some great insight as to who Reid is and how he cares by the little things he does for Sienna on the Road Trip. He knows she loves Ding Dongs. He makes extra stops to bring her some joy she desperately needs on this trek home.
The last half of the book deals with Sienna not sure how to come clean with her brother on the change of their relationship status. I was not prepared for what would meet them once they were back in Rhode Island. The twist at the end that ultimately pushes them apart is huge and I am not sure how they will overcome it to be together.
This was a 4/5 read for me. I really liked it overall. I am intrigued to see how Sienna and Reid can move past the divide and be together. If you like friends to enemies or New Adult I highly recommend this duet. It is a really great example of both. We will be talking about these books with the Authors on an upcoming Drinks with the Bees Podcast.
"I've spent so much time avoiding him, avoiding his efforts to control my life, but behind it all, I've missed him."
Reid Bowen and Sienna Parker have been best friends since childhood, along with Sienna's twin brother, Caleb. Two years earlier, Caleb gave up their joint dream of going away to college all together, on the opposite of the country, to shoulder the family responsibility. He extracted a promise from Reid to look out for Sienna, including keeping guys away from her. Little did he suspect that Reid very much wanted to be one of those guys. However, a promise is a promise and, unfortunately, it drove a wedge between Reid and Sienna.
"I've wanted you, only you, for so long. Anyone who came before you means nothing to me."
When Sienna has to go back home, Reid finds himself committed to a road trip to get her back to her brother. This road trip will be the turning point in their friendship - a new chapter full of possibilities.
This was a fab read. Reid and Sienna were really fiery - their exchanges were charged with mutual attraction as well as animosity. Both had huge barriers in place that completely changed their friendship but you know that once their on the road together, things were bound to change between them. Their chemistry was scorching and their connection was natural. Obviously, this is a duet so you know that no matter how good things seem to be between them, something is going to happen to break them. Really looking forward to the conclusion.
This was my first book by this author and it did not disappoint. Reid’s character I fell in love with him. I freakin love his cockiness, but yet softness towards her. I love how he doesn’t ask, he demands from her. Sienna’s character grew on me as the story unfold. I love the person she was with Reid, but that ending has me questioning her. I’m still in the iffy zone with her. Hopefully that changes with the last book.
I truly love when books take me on a journey and the fact that this book had a road trip, made me enjoy it even more. There were moments where I felt like I was traveling and that’s truly the best. The whole Reid having a big truck and all the things they did in it *wink wink* just added to their chemistry.
I really hope we learn more about Caleb in the next book. He intrigued me a lot. And my heart broke for him that he wasn’t going to college and staying behind. I wanted to know more about him. His friendship with Reid is endearing.
It was a nice summer read filled with steamy moments. Adoring, adventurous moments that led to childhood crushes falling even more in love.
5 COMPLICATE ME STARS!! I was consumed by Reid and Sie's story....I read this book in one sitting. Their story had all the feels, friendship, road trip and some mystery. I can't wait for the next book....I am dying right now. This is my first book by Claire Raye and I can't wait to read more.
When Reid's best friend, Caleb, makes Reid promise to protect and watch over Caleb's sister Sienna when the two of them go away to college, Reid goes to such an extreme, it strains their relationship to the point of dissolving. Can a road trip back bring them closer again? Will they finally give into their unacknowledged feelings for each other?
I was so not expecting the intensity of Complicate Me. Nor was I expecting the awful cliffhanger! Yep, that's right, cliffhanger. A truly gut-wrenching one at that. But the story itself is pretty great - so emotionally significant and entertaining, the sexual tension is so thick, and Reid and Sienna's chemistry is absolutely fire. If it weren't for that shitty cliffhanger, this would have been a 5 star read for sure. But the cliffhanger did serve its purpose because now I'm very anxiously waiting for Complete Me!
ARC via Wildfire Marketing Solutions for an honest review.
Reid & Sienna are slow burn goodness. The push and pull, the tension between them, the forbidden aspect, it was all too good to pass up. I’m really glad that I don’t have too long to wait before the next book. The only thing that kept this from being 5⭐️ for me was that it took me awhile to connect with any of the characters in the beginning.
I loved to Complicate Me by Claire Raye. Reid is the typical college guy who gave his word to his best friend that he'll protect his sister. Sienna had had an awful past and tried to leave it behind when she went off to school with Reid. Since the beginning of college, Reid and Sienna's relationship becomes strained. So, what happens when they have to go back to their hometown - the place that holds bad memories for both of them? Will it bring them together or entirely tear them apart. I loved this best friend's sister romance, and I loved how the characters felt so real. Clair Raye does a fantastic job of holding the reader's attention, and I can't wait for the second book to come out!!
*Provided as an ARC, this is my honest review* Who doesn’t like a frenemies-to-lovers book?! Reid and Sienna share a lot of history. Throughout their road trip we start to unravel the dynamics of their friendship, childhood traumas, and their fears as adults. This book is quite the slow burn but once things heat up, there’s no stopping Reid and Sienna. However, with the cliff hanger we’re left on, we can only hope the intensity of their love can give us a HEA in the conclusion! So fingers crossed, here’s to anticipating their HEA in the duet concluding July 22, 2020!🤞🏼
Complicate Me by Claire Raye ⭐⭐⭐⭐ . I was rooting for Sienna and Reid so HARD through this book! Reid is best friend's with Sienna and her twin brother Caleb, they all have troubled childhoods which bonded them from a young age, but when Reid promises to look out for Sienna at college, things get.....well complicated! 😉 . '𝙸 𝚠𝚊𝚝𝚌𝚑 𝚊𝚜 𝚜𝚑𝚎 𝚝𝚊𝚔𝚎𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚟𝚒𝚎𝚠 𝚠𝚎'𝚟𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚎 𝚞𝚙 𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛. "𝙸𝚝'𝚜 𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚢 𝚋𝚎𝚊𝚞𝚝𝚒𝚏𝚞𝚕," 𝚜𝚑𝚎 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚜𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚜. "𝚈𝚎𝚊𝚑," 𝙸 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚜𝚙𝚎𝚛, 𝚖𝚢 𝚎𝚢𝚎𝚜 𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚕𝚕 𝚘𝚗 𝚑𝚎𝚛. "𝙸𝚝 𝚒𝚜".' . Sie and Reid become frenemies as they struggle with this new life and their hidden feelings for one another, but when life throws hurdles which force them together they start riding the thin line between hate and love. I was frustrated with these two in the earlier parts of the book, dying for one of them to be brave enough to be honest, but that's what I love, good books make you invested, and I am invested in Reid & Sie. . I found this book to be an easy read, it has lighter relief and sweet as hell moments which kept me turning pages, but also has a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions, and just when you think the ride is ending, it drops you in a black hole and leaves you there for the next instalment (which luckily isn't too long to wait!) 🥳 . There's just the right amount of steam and as I've said in reviews before, I like when it is there for a reason and not just thrown in for the sake of it, which I feel like the authors have a good balance of in Complicate Me. The ONLY reason for a 4 instead of a 5 star from me, is that I crave more of a backstory to the three best friend's as children, I would have loved to see some POV's as kids or a couple of chapters at the beginning covering some of how Reid and Sienna drifted at college even. BUT that being said this is a duet, and based on the end of the book, I just know there are some skeletons in the closet waiting to be released in the next instalment, so bring it on! 😬 . This is my first book by Claire Raye, and I will be sure to look out for more in future. But for now I will wait for Complete Me to release ❤ . 𝑰 𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌.
Reid, Caleb and Sienna grew up together. When it's time to leave for college, Caleb decided not to walk their dreams together but babysit his and Sienna's father. Sienna left and never look back with Reid. However, Reid started acting like a dick to her. All because Caleb asked him to protect her on behalf of him.
Unknown to Caleb, there hasn't been a time Reid had remembered since he wanted Sienna as more than friends or his best friend's sister. But seeing Sienna with those guys had made him into such a player and push Sienna further away from him. This carried on the first 2 years of their college and it definitely sucked for the both of them.
When a call back from home demanded them to come back, Reid took it upon himself to bring Sienna home. Even if they would end up killing one another.
Reid and Sienna's story is definitely angsty as they had feelings for each other since they were teenagers and never act on their feelings. This one definitely captivate me, especially their road trip. And towards the end, oh my, I can't wait for the continuation. It ended on such a cliffhanger!
As children Reid, Sienna and Caleb were as close as the Three Musketeers as Caleb was her twin brother and Reid was her brother’s best friend. Years later Reid and Sienna are about to leave for college so since Caleb won’t be there to protect Sienna, he wants Reid to act in his stead. The only problem with that plan is that Reid’s feelings for Sienna are not sisterly so he is determined to keep every other guy at a safe distance while never claiming her as his own.
When Sienna has to return to her hometown it is Reed who becomes her travel companion on a road trip that will either allow them to work through their misunderstanding or create a bigger distance between them that many be impossible to overcome.
There was no denying the chemistry and connection between Sienna and Reid as this story takes you on emotional journey that leads up to a cliffhanger that leaves you wondering what the future has in store for this couple.
This is my first time reading anything from this author, and I can't wait to read the next book in this duet. This is the first book in the Hawthorn Hills Duet, and the story of Reid, and Sienna. When an urgent matter calls Sienna, and Reid across the country, they end up on a road trip of home, but also to each other. This was a beautifully written story, the characters had great chemistry, and their story kept me engaged. This was emotional, raw, gritty, intense, dramatic, passionate, and sexy.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Easy-to-read Entertaining Page-turner Steamy Wonderful characters
Great start to this duet. Reid and Sienna have been close since kids along with her twin which is Reid’s best friend Caleb but now that they are in college without Caleb, Reid has taken over as her protective brother even though both want so much more but no one talks about it until a road trip makes it unavoidable. Looking forward to second part!
Wow! What a read!!!! It’s one of my favorite kinds of books, one that grabs me heart and soul from the very beginning.
I always enjoy a good enemies-to-lovers story, but this one was unique for me. Reid and Sienna didn’t always hate one another. In fact, they were once best friends. Sienna has a twin brother, Caleb. All three of them grew up together, and they had very dysfunctional families, particularly their fathers. This bonded them deeply as young children. As time has passed, Caleb and Reid stayed close, but the relationship between Reid and Sienna changed because of the attraction they felt toward one another. Not knowing what to do about it, they pulled away from one another and grew apart.
Now, Reid and Sienna are at the same college. Caleb stayed home to attempt to salvage his family’s business. Reid promised to keep an eye on Sienna which is complicated because of his feelings for her. She can’t stand to be around him because of his revolving door of women. Little does she know, she is the only woman he wants, but he knows he can’t have her. Her feelings are complicated too as she doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss him or slap him. So, watching these two succumb to their feelings was indeed a pleasure!
I was expecting the chemistry to sizzle, but the emotions their story brought out in me was a great unexpected surprise. Because it is told in both of their voices, I got to see the feelings they were fighting even though they couldn’t see it. The banter between them is at times hilarious, but there are some really tender moments between them too!
I haven’t read anything from this talented team of writers, but I am so glad I found this little gem of a book! To say the ending was a bit of a shocker is an understatement. I cannot WAIT to read the sequel!!!!
The easy way of writing from this amazing duo of authors reaches its point with this book. I was super engaged with Reid and Sienna story, this friends to enemies to lovers is so wonderful and what a rollercoaster of a story. Full with banter, teasing, friendship, mystery and an epic slow-burn to their amazing love.
It was a lot of fun reading how they had an attraction for each other since forever, but their willing to keep each other at arm’s length and to do not show their feelings, drove them crazy for a whole two years! However everything changed with Sienna’s father death. As they are forced to go on a road trip from California to Rhode Island for her father’s funeral and help out Sienna’s twin brother.
I loved everything about their road trip! I wish I could do one myself, specially with Reid by my side. Is it possible? Everything from their stop locations, their interactions, how they rediscover their missing friendship, the playlist and their amazing love story, is amazing! They are truly soulmates, apart they struggle but together? They are a force to be reckoned with, unstoppable!
I was utterly shocked with the cliffhanger and I knew it was coming! I didn’t see it coming and it left devastated, heart broken and everything you could imagine. Although I felt a little disappointed with Sienna and her reaction. But now I feel like there is so much more from their family and personal backgrounds that I don’t know and I’m glad there is a second book coming so soon to answer them all! Can’t wait! This book is a must read you can’t miss it!
This is the first book in the Hawthorn Hills Duet series. Lord almighty hold on because you are going on quite the emotional rollercoaster with this one. It is engaging, has some suspense, twists, turns and mind blowing moments. I absolutely love the tension and chemistry between Reid and Sienna. You absolutely cannot put this one down once you start reading it. You dig deeper and deeper into their storyline and want to know what is going to happen. The ending had me throwing my kindle. It was heart wrenching. Reid and Sienna have been friends forever. Sienna, her brother and Reid all planned on going to college together. Getting out of the little town they live in and away from Sienna's dad. But her brother decides that he needs to stay and take care of things. So he asks Reid to keep an eye on Sienna. Which is easier said then does because he has feeling for her that he shouldn't. But it takes something happening and a road trip back home for these two to realize what is between them. But once they get back home will everything change between them? I absolutely loved this storyline. It was interesting, engaging, nail biting, a page turner from beginning to end. The characters draw you in and have you holding on to see what is going to happen between them. I cant wait to read the next one to see what is going on to happen. An absolute must read from Claire.
ARC was given by Author I gave this book 5 starts Complicate Me by Claire Raye is book 1 in the Hawthorn Hills Duet Complete Me is the 2nd.
This was my first book I read by these authors and I loved it!!! I want more from them 😁. I really enjoyed this college friends turned to lover's romance. Reid, Sienna and Caleb ( Sierra twin) are best friends since they were 5 years old. They've done everything together so going to college together was a given. Unfortunately that is not what happened. Only Reid and Sienna go to college, they all come from a broken disfunction household's and Caleb had to stay behind to take care of the business. I love Reid he is the best c@ck blocker ever....LOL. He is so Hot an alpha male that gets jealous easily. She is sexy, smart, fiesty and trying to get a serious boyfriend. They both have feelings for each other, but neither acted on them with fear of one thing or the other. It was driving me crazy how long it took for them to just do it!!! I enjoyed the bantering, the chemistry, the emotional pain, this book gave and it also had steamy sex which I like in my romance novels. Together they return home on a road trip, and things really take a turn for them.......this does end in a cliffhanger because it's part of a duet. I can't wait to jump on the next book to find out what happens to Reid, Sienna, Ruby and Caleb 😉💙
Not like I'm surprised, but this is yet another amazing read from Claire Raye. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the second book in this duet (but not too long, since the book is coming out soon!).
The angst and slow burn in this book is just about off the charts, and I was here for it. The way that Reid and Sienna wound around each other was a little frustrating, but that slow burn wound up igniting into an inferno that I couldn't get enough of. What I love about Claire Raye is that the men they write in their books are absolutely delectable - and Reid is no exception to that rule. His loyalty and determination made my heart swoon, and while he came off as a jerk at times, he really cared about those he loved (almost to a fault). Sienna is stubborn and thinks she knows it all, but you get to see a different side of her as the book progressed. Definitely note that the book ends on a cliffhanger - and it's one heck of a cliffhanger - so be sure to read this one first and then read the second book. You won't be disappointed.
I loved the road trip. I loved their passion. I loved the story line and cannot wait to see how this ends! Thanks to Claire Raye for an advanced copy of this awesome book!
**Note: this is book one of a duet and ends in a cliff-hanger, read Complete Me for the wonderful ending of Sienna and Reid’s story.**
I read a sample of this book (the first 2 chapters) and instantly pre-order both in the duet, counting down to release day. Siblings best friend is one of my favourite tropes and the history, chemistry, and banter Sienna and Reid share is perfect. Sienna and Reid (along with Sienna’s twin Caleb) have known each other since the were young kids; but over the years, these two have grown disconnected and Sienna hates Reid and how he treats her by ‘protecting’ her for Caleb. They have no choice but to share a road trip home from college to see Caleb and it forces them to open up to one another and discover things they chose to hide. There were some emotional points in this book, especially as the layers of the main characters begin to be pulled back.
Although cliff-hangers are difficult at times, I really enjoyed how this story left you with an ‘OMG’ moment and then a ‘no way’ and ‘what happens next?!?!?’. I could not wait to see where part two will go and how it will all unfold.
5 Stars – one of my favourite couples from this author.
When Claire Raye said this was a slow burn she meant S. L. O. W. As in, things don't start heating up until the last 75 % of the book and then its basically rated R until the end. So much so I found myself skimming through it because there was just... a lot. What kept me reading was wanting to know how Sienna's brother would react to Reid dating his best friend. Spoiler alert: I have no freaking clue. It ends on a cliff hanger with Sienna mad at Reid because of sins his father made. I understand the purpose, cliff hangers are great to keep readers interested in your story, but the ending felt unfinished. I gave it three stars because while I liked it, I'm not invested enough to read it again or the next one.
Claire Raye have kicked off a new series with a bang. This is the first book I’ve read by this author duo, however I have had one of their other novels in my TBR list for a bit. Based on this read, I’m sure that one will be amazing as well.
Complicate Me is a new duet and a new world for the pair. Reid and Sienna have been part of an inseparable trio since childhood. Their third partner in crime is Sienna’s twin Caleb.
Our story opens with Reid. He and Sienna are due to head off to college in California in a few weeks. Caleb was supposed to go with them, but at the last minute changed his mind due to reasons only he knows. Reid is still fuming and hurt with his best friend when Caleb makes Reid promise to look out for Sienna at school and keep her safe. Reid reluctantly agrees.
The story then takes us to present day. College in California. Sienna and Reid have moved on from the abandoned kids who had each other’s backs to raging enemies. Reid is taking his promise to Caleb seriously, even as it forces him to squash his own long time attraction to Sienna. This of course means that he’s sleeping his way through the football groupies while sabotaging any relationship that Sienna attempts to start up.
There are some very heated (angry) scenes between the two as a lead up to this book’s catalytic moment. Reid pulls some pretty low and devastating verbal punches due to his frustrations and pain. Reid, Caleb, and Sienna haven’t had the best of upbringings. It’s relieved that Caleb and Sienna’s father is a reckless drunkard, running a bar empire into the ground and ignoring his children. Caleb supposedly stayed behind to “clean up the mess” allowing Sienna a Chance at an education.
We gain glimpses of Reid’s parents scattered through the story. At the heart it appears he has an absentee dad who could care less about his wife and child coupled with a vacant mom who lives the life of “that lady who lunches” - with a constant bottle of booze.
The true start of this story is when Caleb calls Reid to tell him that Caleb’s dad has died and he needs Reid and Sienna to come home. This is easier said than done given Sienna’s feelings regarding both Reid and her father.
I loved the meat of this story. Reid decides to drive Sienna cross country to get her back home. It’s for selfish and selfless purposes. He knows she’s dreading going back, and he just wants her to himself. Over the cross country trip the former friends begin to open up to each other about the changes they’ve been through since starting college together. Sienna lets out her frustration and hurt at Reid for his behavior towards her. He slowly begins to show Sienna the side of himself he keeps hidden from everyone. Reid turns out to be a soft hearted romantic who has been tossed aside too many times by the people he cares about. He’s scared to admit his feelings to Sienna and frightened to death of Caleb’s possible reaction. Sienna feels the same. Eventually, these two figure out that they are fighting the same battle and just give in to their hearts.
Claire Raye write a wonderfully broken pair of people who want to be loved and needed so badly, but have been taught that they shouldn’t expect those things for themselves. The road trip is just one long winding way of Reid showing Sienna how much he loves her and sees her. The stops they make, the give and take in their fighting, the delaying their eventual arrival back home...it’s all Reid trying to give this woman as much love as he can before their world crashes.
Sadly for this book, their world crashes hard. Very very hard. Immediately upon their arrival the duo find Caleb in a life or death situation. As the quickly unfolding events of the final chapters bring us emotional and physical pain for the trio, it’s finally revealed to us exactly who and what Reid’s father is.
The story closes with an incredibly painful cliffhanger that has the reader wondering how this will ever be overcome. I’m anxiously awaiting the conclusion to this duet.
As with all the stories that I truly love, this one has a plot deeply embedded in the emotional portion of the characters’ lives. Even for being new adults, the trio is a complex mix of deep emotions, turmoil, and stories. The deeper Reid and Sienna get into their trip, the deeper the reader falls into both their back story as well as their now story. Sienna is one of my kick butt and take names female leads that I love to read. She has SUCH a deeply destroyed heart from her childhood, yet a capacity to love deeply and so loyally that I’m anxious to see what her final story will be. As it is, it looks like it’s going to emotionally destroy her based on the choices she’s left with at the conclusion to book one.
This book is a gripping read. I both eagerly devoured it, and anxiously feared what I knew would be an unresolved ending.
However, the authors tease us with a second duet for Caleb. So, bring it on ladies. I’m all in. I’m ready for the Reid Sienna conclusion, and becoming more and more curious about how complex and broken Caleb will be.
