THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR is an improvement over books 7 and 8. Jessie is on equal footing with her peers for once, and she suffers a major loss that alters the trajectory of her life. That alteration is probably temporary, but it affects the characters, and it affected me as a reader. It’s not that Jessie’s previous losses, such as her foster parents, were insignificant. As readers, we simply didn’t know them that well. We know this character, and the ripple effect news of their death causes is well done.
I liked Jessie’s short- and long-term adversaries in this book, even though the confrontation with the long-term villain went in a direction I didn’t expect. I believe there was more story that could have been mined, but the ending is a good thing. As enjoyable as these books are, they were becoming predictable. I think I know where the story is headed going into book 10, but maybe not. Either way, I’m more invested than I have been for several books.
